by Folarin Kehinde January 1, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali is bereaved, yet again.

Nwabali had in November 2024 announced the passing of his father, and barely two months later, he has announced that his mother is also no more.

A devastated Nwabali took to social media to announce the sad development writing, “A very very crazy world indeed, Rip mom, worst year of my life already”

The 28-year-old shot stopper was excused from the Super Eagles camp for the game against Rwanda last year when his father passed, to allow him mourn.

Manchester City Will Hit Top Form Again – Pep Guardiola

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 3, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola remains optimistic that his team can return to their dominant form once key players recover, despite their current struggles.

The reigning Premier League champions have lost six of their past seven matches across all competitions, leaving them 11 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool. This downturn is a stark contrast for a team that has won six of the last seven Premier League titles, including the past four consecutively.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s home match against Nottingham Forest, Pep Guardiola expressed confidence in City’s ability to recover. “With all the squad this season, we’ll be close to the level that we reached last season,” he said during Tuesday’s pre-match press conference.

City’s season has been marred by injuries, including the long-term absence of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri. Other key players, such as Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne, Mateo Kovacic, and Ruben Dias, have also faced time on the sidelines.

Despite a 2-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday, Guardiola described the team’s performance as “magnificent.” He noted that City are just two points behind second-placed Arsenal and insisted the team is not far from regaining its consistency.

Guardiola hinted at potential reinforcements in the January transfer window, stating the club would discuss the matter internally.

Addressing the goalkeeper situation, Guardiola confirmed Ederson remains the first-choice keeper despite being benched for the Liverpool game in favor of Stefan Ortega. The Brazilian was dropped following an error in last week’s 3-3 draw against Feyenoord. “Ederson number one, Stefan number two. But maybe Stefan continues. We’ll see tomorrow and the next games,” he said.

Guardiola also appealed to City’s fans to rally behind the team. “Many, many good moments we’ve lived together,” he said. “They know that we need absolute support because all of us, the players especially, are human beings.”

Nottingham Forest, currently sixth in the league and one point behind City, will visit the Etihad on Wednesday in a critical fixture for Guardiola’s side.

Super Eagles Fall 8th Places in Latest FIFA Ranking

by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 29, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have fallen eight places in the latest FIFA rankings, moving from 36th to 44th globally. The rankings, released on Thursday by FIFA, also show that Nigeria has dropped to fifth in Africa, losing a spot to Algeria.

This marks one of the biggest declines for any team in the rankings, with Congo Brazzaville and Sierra Leone also recording significant drops.

The slide follows a poor performance by the Super Eagles in their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Despite securing qualification before their match against Benin Republic, courtesy of Rwanda’s victory over Libya, Nigeria managed only a late 1-1 draw against the Gernot Rohr-led Beninese.

Four days later, the team suffered a shocking home defeat to Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, compounding their underwhelming performance.

On the continental stage, Morocco and Senegal retained their positions as the best African teams, followed by Egypt in third and Algeria in fourth.

Globally, Argentina continues to lead the rankings, with France and Spain in second and third, respectively. England and Brazil complete the top five teams in the world.

The latest FIFA rankings reflect a challenging period for the Super Eagles, who will look to regain form ahead of the 2025 AFCON tournament.

Peak Celebrates Super Eagles AFCON Qualification with Team Breakfast

by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 25, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC, producers of Peak Milk and the official dairy partner of the Super Eagles, marked the national team’s qualification for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a special breakfast event in their camp on Sunday.

The Super Eagles secured their spot in the tournament following a 1-1 draw against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in Abidjan last Thursday. The result saw Nigeria top their group with 11 points from five matches, ahead of Rwanda and Libya, earning an early ticket to the 37th AFCON scheduled to take place in Morocco.

In a statement on Monday, Ore Famurewa, Executive Director of Corporate Affairs at FrieslandCampina WAMCO, highlighted the company’s long-standing partnership with the Super Eagles, which dates back to 1998. Famurewa noted that Peak Milk presented its nourishing dairy products to the players and officials during the event, aiming to boost morale and provide high-quality nourishment.

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong expressed gratitude on behalf of the team for Peak Milk’s continued support.

“We are especially grateful to Peak Milk for hosting us today and for standing by the team for decades. Their support is invaluable, and I believe it will inspire us to achieve even greater success, especially at next year’s AFCON in Morocco,” Troost-Ekong said.

Olumide Olaokun, Brand Manager for Peak, underscored the importance of the event, stating:

“Peak has been nourishing Nigeria’s number one football brand as the Official Milk of the Super Eagles since 1998. Today’s presentation of our nourishing products will definitely spur the team to victory as we all look forward to a greater performance at next year’s AFCON and earning the ticket to the World Cup to be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.”

The breakfast event further strengthened Peak Milk’s bond with the Super Eagles as both look ahead to a successful campaign in Morocco.

Manchester United Sacks Manager Eric Ten Hag

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 28, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Manchester United has parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following a dismal start to the season.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed interim head coach, tasked with guiding the team until a permanent replacement is found.

The decision to sack Ten Hag came as a surprise, given his contract extension in July. He had also invested heavily in the squad, spending over £600m in transfer fees during his tenure.

Manchester United’s hierarchy described the decision as “difficult and finely balanced,” but ultimately unanimous.

Ten Hag was reportedly caught off guard by the timing of his dismissal, which came less than 24 hours after Sunday’s contentious 2-1 loss at West Ham.

Libya rejects CAF’s verdict, files appeal

by Folarin Kehinde October 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Libya Football Federation (LFF) has launched an appeal to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the punishment meted out to them on the botched 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Nigeria.

Daily Trust had reported how the Super Eagles of Nigeria faced significant challenges, including a redirected flight, over 18 hours of delays, and logistical issue during a trip for return leg of the 1-0 match in favour of Nigeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

As a result, CAF canceled the match, awarding three goals and three points to the Super Eagles while slamming a $50,000 fine on the Libyans.

A statement by CAF Disciplinary Board in its ruling on Saturday, signed by the chairman, Ousmane Kane, said the Disciplinary Board ruled met and decided as follows:

The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

“The match No. 87 Libya v. Nigeria of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October in Benghazi) declared lost by forfeit by Libya (by a score of 3-0).

“The Libya Football Federation is ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000. The fine is to be paid within 60 days of notification of the present decision. All other and further motions or prayers for relief are dismissed.”

However, according to Libyan outlet alwasat.ly, the LFF considers as unfair the decision that has placed them at the bottom of Group D in the AFCON qualifiers.

The Libyan authorities have therefore engaged the services of a Tunisian lawyer, Ali Abbas, to defend their position.

The outcome of this appeal could have significant implications for the ongoing qualification process, particularly for Nigeria, who currently needs only one more point to secure their place in the competition in Morocco.

BREAKING: CAF fines Libya $50,000, awards victory to Super Eagles over maltreatment

by Folarin Kehinde October 26, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Nigeria a 3-0 win and full three points in the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier with Libya.

The governing body announced the verdict in a statement on Saturday.

Daily Trust had reported how the Super Eagles faced significant challenges, including a redirected flight, over 18 hours of delays, and logistical issue during a trip for return leg of the 1-0 match in favour of Nigeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

After the 46th Ordinary General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, had vowed that appropriate action would be taken on the issue.

During his address, Motsepe who refrained from any detailed explanation on the incident, said CAF will no longer tolerate such instances across the continent.

But he assured that “the process has been properly investigated and appropriate action will be taken”.

He said “When there was this problem with the Nigerian national team in Libya, and I will not comment on that, because there’s a proper investigation.

“But I want to emphasise a principle that we will not tolerate, because this is something that has been going on for quite some time.

Your national team, let me emphasise, forget about the Nigeria and Libya situation, because that process has been properly investigated, and appropriate action will be taken.”

The South African highlighted recurring instances in African football where visiting teams are sometimes treated poorly.

“Too many stories have been told of national teams or football clubs going to a country, and they spend hours at the airport, being asked about documents that don’t exist,” Motsepe said.
