FG budgets N31bn to renovate Abuja Stadium, others

by Folarin Kehinde January 11, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

In a bid to improve the fortunes of Nigerian football and sports at all levels, the federal government has earmarked over N31.4 billion for the renovation and upgrade of critical sports facilities across the country.

This initiative, under the National Sports Infrastructure Development Plan, is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate the country’s sports sector, elevate athletic performance and restore Nigeria’s capacity to host international sporting events.

At the heart of this ambitious project lies the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, alongside other iconic sports facilities, such as the National Stadium in Surulere in Lagos, Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu and Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt. These historic sports arenas are slated for substantial upgrades that promise to restore their statuses as world-class facilities.

According to the leadership of the reinstated National Sports Commission (NSC), the initiative reflects government’s commitment to addressing longstanding issues that have plagued Nigerian sports infrastructure for decades, including aging facilities, insufficient maintenance and outdated systems.

Renovations will elevate these stadiums up to international standard, positioning Nigeria to host global competitions while fostering the growth of local talents.

As part of President Bola Tinubu’s N47.90 trillion “Budget of Restoration,” the NSC has allocated over N28 billion to upgrade stadiums nationwide. Specifically, N12.7 billion has been designated for the rehabilitation of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium’s main bowl (Phase I), while an additional N4 billion is earmarked for completing a high-performance centre for athletes at the same venue. A further N4.5 billion will fund the construction of a sports secretariat within the stadium.

The construction/completion of mini sports centres across the six geopolitical zones is expected to gulp N4.4 billion while N12 million was allocated for the provision of internet band with connectivity via optic fiber and LAN/WAN at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja and other critical national sporting infrastructure for the commission.

The budget also includes N5.8 billion for general upgrade and maintenance of other sports infrastructure across the country. This is where some of the iconic facilities like the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu and Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, which have been handed over to the respective state government, will benefit as they would also enjoy some intervention.

Barcelona Eye Marcus Rashford in January Transfer Deal

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

England and Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has emerged as a transfer target for Barcelona, with the Catalan giants reportedly making moves to secure his services on a loan deal during the January transfer window.

Football journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed the development in a post on X on Friday, noting that the 27-year-old forward has fallen out of favor at Manchester United under manager Ruben Amorim. Rashford recently hinted at his desire for a fresh challenge, further fueling speculation about his potential departure.

Reports indicate that Barcelona has initiated contact with Rashford’s representatives to express their interest in the forward.

Rashford, who has also been linked to other top European clubs, including AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Arsenal, and West Ham, faces a significant stumbling block in his hefty wages. The England international reportedly earns over €350,000 per week at Manchester United, posing a financial challenge for potential suitors.

Despite the wage hurdle, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is reportedly keen on strengthening Hansi Flick’s squad this winter. Laporta views Rashford as a valuable addition who could enhance the team’s attacking options.

‘I cried first time in 4 years after seeing God’ — Ruger shares testimony in church

by Folarin Kehinde January 2, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

“I thank God. I have not cried in like four years. Today, I saw God again, and I cried. I thank God for my life. I thank God for everybody here. I thank God for everybody who has nurtured me since I started in this church,”

Michael Adebayo, the Nigerian singer popularly known as Ruger, has shared a testimony about his spiritual encounter at the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Lagos, his childhood place of worship.

The ‘Asiwaju’ hitmaker attended the church’s crossover service this year, a tradition he had missed for the past two years due to being abroad.

Determined not to miss it again, Ruger instructed his manager to cancel any scheduled shows that could interfere with the service.

Ruger, visibly moved during the service, revealed that he experienced an emotional breakthrough, shedding tears for the first time in four years as he felt God’s presence.

“Happy New Year to everybody. Today, I am so happy to be here. Today, my manager texted me and told me that I have one show tonight. And I told him to cancel it that I did not care,” Ruger said during his testimony.

“I have to be in church because in 2021, I was in church here. I missed the crossover service for 2022 and 2023 because I was outside the country. I told my manager to close all shows before the crossover service because I would not miss it. Whatever it is, we are not taking it,” he added.

Expressing his gratitude, Ruger thanked God, the congregation, and the church leadership for their role in his spiritual journey and personal development.

“I thank God. I have not cried in like four years. Today, I saw God again, and I cried. I thank God for my life. I thank God for everybody here. I thank God for everybody who has nurtured me since I started in this church,” he said.

“This is a very caring church. Because, if this church is not great, great people would not come out of this church.”

2025: Delta Musician To Marry 3 Wives on Same Day

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 1, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Dr. Arube Otor, a 55-year-old highlife musician from Delta State, popularly known as Isoko Fela One, is set to marry three women on the same day.

The wedding is scheduled to take place on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the Anglican Church Field in London Base, Uzere Kingdom, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.

A viral wedding flier shows Arube dressed in matching outfits with his three brides-to-be, Oghenekome, Ewoma, and Oghenekaro, all from Delta State.

Confirming the development in a telephone interview on Wednesday, Arube’s foster son and one of the event’s coordinators, Emperor Efih (Oscar), said the ceremony would proceed as planned. He explained that the initial plan was for Arube to marry four women, but one of the brides withdrew for personal reasons.

Efih revealed that the decision to marry multiple women at once was driven by cost-cutting considerations. “Arube married two women about 20 years ago. One divorced him, leaving him with one wife. To save costs, he decided to marry four women this year. Along the way, one pulled out,” he said.

A veteran of the Isoko highlife music scene, Arube has been performing for over 30 years. According to Efih, Arube began his career as a driver while pursuing music on the side. He later formed his own dance band, named Arube, about 12 years ago after his previous group disbanded. Since then, he has released more than 10 albums, solidifying his status as a music legend in Delta State.

Netizens React As VeryDarkMan Claim N180 Million Was Hacked From His NGO Website

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 27, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Martins Otse, known online as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has reported a loss of approximately ₦180 million from his NGO’s account due to a cyberattack. In an Instagram video posted on Friday, Otse stated that the funds were diverted to an unknown account following a breach of the NGO’s website.

“I’ve not been myself these past few days. Somebody hacked into the NGO website, and N180 million is missing,” Otse lamented. He further revealed that one suspect has been apprehended, and the account has been placed on Post No Debit (PND) status, with ₦20 million remaining while ₦160 million was diverted. Otse mentioned plans to travel to Jos to recover the funds.

To prevent further breaches, Otse disclosed that the NGO’s app has been temporarily shut down for maintenance and assured his followers of ongoing updates regarding the recovery efforts.

The Martins Vincent Osei Initiative, launched by Otse in October, garnered significant attention, amassing over ₦30 million in donations within hours. Notably, music executive Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, contributed ₦100 million to the cause.

However, the recent announcement has been met with skepticism on social media platforms. Many users question the possibility of such a substantial sum being stolen through a website hack, given that websites typically do not store funds. Some critics have accused Otse of misappropriating the funds, citing unverified claims of him acquiring a new Mercedes-Benz AMG.

As the situation unfolds, Otse has committed to providing further updates on the investigation and recovery of the missing funds.
