Kylian Mbappe to Miss Real Madrid Cup Tie After Injury Setback

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 4, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Kylian Mbappe will be unavailable for the club’s Copa del Rey quarter-final clash against Leganes due to a bruised calf.

Mbappe sustained the injury during Real Madrid’s 1-0 La Liga defeat to Espanyol on Saturday after a challenge from Carlos Romero. The Espanyol defender avoided a red card and later scored the winning goal against the league leaders.

On Monday, Real Madrid lodged a complaint with the Spanish football federation, describing refereeing in Spain as “rigged” and “completely discredited.”

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Ancelotti provided an update on Mbappe’s condition.

“Mbappe started training today. We gave him an extra day of recovery yesterday,” Ancelotti said. “He has a bruised calf, he trained normally, but he will not be available for the game tomorrow.”

Nigeria to Host Landmark International Wheelchair Softball Tournament

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 29, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Nigeria has been granted hosting rights for a six-nation wheelchair softball tournament by the International Wheelchair Softball Federation, marking the first time such an event will be held in Africa.

President of the Wheelchair Softball Federation of Nigeria (WSFN), Sunday Odion, confirmed the development, noting that interest from the United States, the Netherlands, and Japan could expand the tournament to nine participating nations.

“The international body has given us the hosting right for a six-nation tournament. However, the US, the Netherlands, and Japan have also expressed interest, which could bring the total to nine,” Odion stated.

He highlighted the significance of hosting the event, particularly in terms of technical assistance for Nigeria and other African nations. He emphasized the opportunity to train coaches and officials locally at a reduced cost compared to overseas training programs.

“This will come with technical support from the International Federation to train our coaches. Instead of sending two coaches to the US at a high cost, we can train 20 to 40 coaches here,” he explained.

Odion also noted that other African countries could benefit by sending their coaches and officials for training, enhancing the overall development of wheelchair softball on the continent.

Appealing for support, he called on Nigerians to invest in sports development, not just for wheelchair softball but for other disciplines as well.

“We are counting on Nigerians who have the means to support sports—not just softball but other sports as well,” he urged.

The tournament is expected to leave a lasting legacy for wheelchair softball in Africa, positioning Nigeria as a key player in adaptive sports development and fostering international collaboration in the field.

by Folarin Kehinde January 15, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigerian singer, Darlington Achakpo, popularly called Speed Darlington and Akpi, has been arraigned and subsequently granted bail, his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed on Wednesday.

Adeyanju disclosed this in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday morning.

Adeyanju wrote, “Police finally arraigns Speed Darlington in court.

“Bail application moved and granted. We are trying to perfect same.”

Leading reporters recalls that Speed Darlington petitioned the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) in Abuja, DIG Dasuki Galadanchi, seeking compliance with a court order against his continued detention.

His counsel, Rosemary E. Hamza, from the Chambers of Deji Adeyanju & Partners, had emphasised that the court order issued by Justice M.S. Liman on December 23, 2024, directed the police to charge Speed Darlington within 48 hours or release him unconditionally.

Speed Darlington was initially arrested in October 2024 over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking of Nigerian music sensation Damini Ogulu, popularly called Burna Boy.

Speed Darlington was arrested in Lagos and transferred to Abuja, where he was detained by the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team. He was later released and re-arrested in November 2024 while performing at a show in Owerri, Imo State.

Mohbad: My life got better after my Son’s death — Father

by Folarin Kehinde January 15, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Joseph Aloba, the father of the late singer, Ilerioluwa, aka Mohbad, has revealed that his life got better after the death of his son.

Aloba revealed this in an interview with a media personality, Akin Abolade, popularly known as Mrlilgaga, on Wednesday.

“Let me just say yes, my life got better after Mohbad’s death because he is my friend. He had it in plan to do many things for me but they didn’t allow him to do them. After his death, it was the spirit of Mohbad, and that of God combined together that began to send people to assist me.

“Even the car and everything I have now, it was people that gave them to me and it is beyond ordinary. So it is the spirit of Mohbad and God that led those people to give me all I have now.

“Those were the things he was meant to be doing for me, but they didn’t allow him to do them,” he added.

Clarifying insinuations towards those accused, Mohbad’s father noted that he was laying emphasis on his son’s wife (Wunmi) and her family, adding, “They did a lot concerning that boy (Mohbad). All his landed property is in their possession. Even the land he bought for me to build a church, I forced him to buy and mold the blocks on it, which was later used to bury him.

“Two weeks before his death, he took me to the house he wanted to buy and told me he was going to buy it after the completion of his tour, for which I know he had completely paid.”

He also said the birth of Mohbad led him to become a singer after the money from the naming ceremony was stolen, stressing that his late son became a backup singer for him at the age of one.

Aloba mentioned that he is a carpenter, singer, and pastor, although he does not have a church. He added that his son had promised to build one for him before his death.

The father toured his new block industry with the media personality, showing his new truck and Toyota Highlander vehicle gifted to him by Nigerians who were compassionate about his son’s death.

He also revealed that he has released about nine tracks since the death of his son.

On 11 September 2023, MohBad died in Lagos at the age of 26.

A nurse who was reported by his spouse to have administered a Tetanus vaccine to him was arrested and found to be an unlicensed nurse on 19 September 2023 by the Lagos State Police Command.
