Europe Trails China, U.S. in AI Innovation – Macron

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that Europe is falling behind in artificial intelligence (AI) development and must take urgent steps to compete with the United States and China.

In an interview with CNN, Macron acknowledged that Europe is “not in the race today” and stressed the need for a clear AI agenda to bridge the gap.

“We are not in the race today, we are lagging behind,” he said. “We need an AI agenda because we have to bridge the gap with the United States and China on AI.”

He highlighted funding and computing power as major challenges, noting that Europe controls only three to five percent of global computing capacity. Macron emphasized the need to increase this share to at least 20 percent.

His remarks come ahead of the Paris AI Summit, which begins on Monday and will bring together global tech leaders to discuss AI innovation, investment, and regulation.

According to French publication TF1, France is set to announce €109 billion in AI investments at the summit’s opening session. This includes €20 billion from Canadian investment firm Brookfield for AI projects in France, with an additional €50 billion expected from the UAE in the coming years.

Macron’s call for AI advancement follows major developments in the sector, including China’s DeepSeek making significant breakthroughs and the United States launching its $500 billion Stargate project to expand data centers and strengthen AI dominance.

France is also making strides in AI through Mistral AI, a Paris-based startup specializing in open-weight large language models (LLMs), which officially launched on February 6, 2025.

JAMB Registrar Advocates Sharia Law for Southwest Muslims

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, has called for the establishment of Sharia panels in the Southwest to serve the interests of Muslims in the region.

Oloyede, who also serves as the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), urged leaders in the six states of the geopolitical zone to support the initiative, emphasizing that it would help foster sustainable peace.

Speaking on the Sunday edition of Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a socio-political programme aired on Channels Television, Oloyede said there was nothing wrong with Muslims having Sharia courts in the Southwest.

“Recently, people are talking about Sharia Panels in the Southwest, and I was just smiling. I had never seen such a level of ignorance being displayed,” he said.

He noted that Sharia panels, which primarily handle marriage and inheritance disputes, have existed in the region for years. Citing Oyo State as an example, he referenced a PhD thesis on the subject written in 2007 by Prof. Makinde, now a professor at the University of Ibadan.

Oloyede dismissed concerns that the proposal could cause religious tension, stressing that Muslims, Christians, and traditional institutions in the Southwest have co-existed peacefully for generations.

“The matter is trivial, and unnecessary tension should not be built around it. However, Southwest Muslims bear a psychological burden for the peace and harmony in the region,” he added.

The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin emphasized the need for continuous monitoring of religious coexistence to sustain peace, warning that failing to do so would mean living in the past.

Nigeria Mourns Namibia’s Founding President Sam Nujoma

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Nigerian government has extended its condolences to Namibia over the passing of Dr. Sam Nujoma, the country’s founding President and a key figure in its liberation struggle.

Nujoma, who led Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990 and served as its first president for 15 years, passed away on Saturday at the age of 95.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, in a statement on Sunday, described Nujoma as a towering figure in Africa’s fight for liberation and unity.

“The revolutionary leader who guided Namibia to independence and became its first president reportedly passed away peacefully in Windhoek,” the statement, signed by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, read.

Tuggar hailed Nujoma as a visionary leader, Pan-Africanist, and relentless freedom fighter who dedicated his life to the emancipation of Namibia from colonial rule.

“His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and self-determination shaped Namibia’s destiny and inspired generations of Africans in the fight against oppression and injustice,” he said.

The minister also noted Nujoma’s role in laying the foundation for democracy, reconciliation, and development in Namibia, earning him global respect.

Nigeria, he added, shares in Namibia’s grief and remembers Nujoma as a true friend and steadfast ally in African solidarity.

“In this time of mourning, Nigeria stands in solidarity with the people of Namibia and reaffirms our commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship and partnership between our two nations. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Tuggar said.

Nujoma, Namibia’s first democratically elected president, prioritized national unity and implemented reconciliation policies that encouraged white Namibians to remain and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Zamfara Governor Offers Conditional Dialogue With Bandits

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has expressed willingness to negotiate with bandits on the condition that they cease attacks and surrender their weapons.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Lawal said his administration was open to dialogue, provided it was based on truth and sincerity. This marks a shift from his government’s earlier stance against any negotiations with criminal groups.

“Dialogue is not entirely off the table, but it must be anchored on truth and honesty,” Lawal said. “Many people have suffered losses, including their parents and spouses. It is essential to address their plight rather than solely focusing on the bandits.”

The governor’s statement contrasts with the firm position taken in July 2024 by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Mobilisation, Alhaji Faruk Ahmad, who had ruled out reconciliation with any bandit leader.

“We will not reconcile with any bandit leader. We will continue fighting them. Those willing to surrender should do so, and those who are not will be fought,” Ahmad had said.

Governor Lawal also highlighted recent successes in the state’s security operations, stating that over 50 terrorists were killed on Friday in Tungar Fulani, along the Zurmi/Shinkafi axis. He added that several notorious bandit leaders linked to Bello Turji, including Sani Mainasara, Sani Black, and Kachallah Auta, had been eliminated.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining the fight against criminal elements. “They should either lay down their weapons or we continue with our decisive action against them,” he said.

Protest in Rivers Community After Police Officer Shoots Man Dead

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A protest broke out in the Omagwa community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, following the alleged extra-judicial killing of a youth by a police officer.

The incident occurred when a policeman attached to the Omagwa Division of the Rivers State Police Command reportedly shot and killed Chikuma Egbule, a native of the community.

The killing sparked immediate outrage, with protesters initially attempting to deposit Egbule’s body at the Omagwa Divisional Police Station. However, they were resisted by officers at the station. The demonstrators then blocked the highway leading to the Port Harcourt International Airport and Owerri, Imo State, causing heavy gridlock.

Reacting to the development, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the officer involved had been arrested, and the deceased’s body had been taken to the morgue.

“The command is aware, and the Commissioner of Police is on top of the situation. Normalcy has now been restored, and adequate security is in place to prevent any breach of peace,” she said in a WhatsApp message.

She added that the officer responsible had been detained while an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

IPOB: Judge Postpones Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial Indefinitely

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), indefinitely.

Justice Binta Nyako adjourned the case on Monday following Kanu’s insistence that she could not preside over the matter, citing her previous recusal.

Kanu, who arrived at the court premises under the escort of operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) at about 8:30 a.m., objected to the trial proceeding under Justice Nyako.

His lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, told the court that Kanu maintained his position that Justice Nyako should recuse herself from the case. He noted that the IPOB leader had earlier requested the judge’s withdrawal on September 24, 2024, leading to her initial recusal.

However, the prosecuting counsel, led by Adegboyega Awomolo, informed the court that the prosecution was ready to proceed with its witnesses.

Justice Nyako responded that the Chief Judge had not accepted her recusal and had referred the case back to her for trial. She directed the defence team to submit a formal application if they wished to pursue the request for recusal.

Kanu has been in SSS custody since 2021 and is facing charges of terrorism and treasonable felony linked to his separatist activities.

IPOB, which advocates for the secession of the southeastern region from Nigeria, was proscribed and designated a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government in 2017. The group recently challenged its proscription at the Supreme Court.

U.S. Slaps Sanctions on ICC Under Donald Trump’s Order

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 7, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

U.S. President Donald Trump has authorized economic and travel sanctions against individuals involved in International Criminal Court (ICC) investigations targeting U.S. citizens and allies, including Israel.

The move, announced Thursday, comes amid Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington. Netanyahu, along with Israel’s former defense minister and a Hamas leader, is facing ICC warrants over the ongoing war in Gaza.

It remains unclear when the U.S. will release the names of sanctioned individuals. This action mirrors measures taken by the Trump administration in 2020 when Washington imposed sanctions on then-ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and a senior aide over the court’s probe into alleged war crimes by U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

The ICC has yet to respond to the latest sanctions, which include freezing U.S.-based assets of targeted individuals and barring them and their families from entering the country.

The 125-member ICC prosecutes individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression within its jurisdiction. However, the United States, China, Russia, and Israel are not members.

Trump’s executive order follows last week’s failed attempt by U.S. Senate Republicans to pass legislation imposing similar sanctions on the ICC.

Anticipating financial restrictions, the ICC has taken precautionary measures, including paying staff salaries three months in advance, sources told Reuters. In December, ICC President Judge Tomoko Akane warned that such sanctions could severely disrupt the court’s operations and threaten its existence.

Russia has also taken action against the ICC. In 2023, the court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin over the alleged illegal deportation of Ukrainian children. Moscow retaliated by banning ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan and placing him and two ICC judges on its wanted list.

Nigerians To Experience Price Hike As NPA Increase Charges by 15%

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 7, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced a 15% increase in port charges, marking the first tariff adjustment since 1993. The agency attributed the review to the need for improved infrastructure and global competitiveness.

NPA Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, disclosed this during a maritime stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos on Thursday. Represented by the Executive Director of Marine and Operations, Olalekan Badmus, he explained that although the Federal Government had already approved the adjustment, the NPA sought to engage stakeholders before implementation.

“The 15% upward review, which applies across all NPA rates and dues, is necessary to address the challenge of aging and weak port infrastructure,” Badmus stated.

While some stakeholders raised concerns over the increase, they acknowledged that inflation—currently around 35%—had significantly eroded the value of NPA’s tariff structure over the past three decades.

Maritime expert Joshua Asanga noted that port management costs, including wages and fuel, had risen without a corresponding adjustment in charges. He emphasized the need for improved port infrastructure, a stronger Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system, and enhanced operational platforms such as tugboats.

Similarly, another stakeholder, Demian Ukagu, urged the NPA to allocate more funds to outer port facilities and jetties, including the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal, to boost efficiency and trade sustainability.

The new tariff is expected to enhance port operations while ensuring a minimum return on investment.

Bolt Faces Backlash Over Alleged 50% Fare Cut in Lagos, Drivers Threaten Protests

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 7, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Lagos ride-hailing sector is facing renewed scrutiny following claims by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) that Bolt has implemented a 50% fare reduction, significantly affecting drivers’ earnings.

AUATON’s Lagos State Public Relations Officer, Steven Iwindoye, warned that a mass protest could be imminent if the alleged fare adjustment is not reversed.

However, in exclusive interviews with Nairametrics, some Bolt drivers refuted the claim. Drivers Christian and Evans Nwokoro stated they had not transported any passengers who received a 50% discount, adding that Bolt’s discounts are part of a targeted loyalty program rather than a uniform fare reduction.

With rising fuel prices and increasing operational costs, fare adjustments remain a contentious issue for ride-hailing drivers in Nigeria. The latest dispute highlights ongoing concerns over pricing transparency, fair compensation, and the balance between customer incentives and driver earnings.

While fare disputes are common in the industry, the drivers maintained that Bolt’s pricing model does not impose a blanket fare slash but instead applies structured incentives based on customer history.

INEC Proposes Special Tribunal for Election-Related Crimes

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 7, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has renewed its call for the establishment of a special tribunal to handle electoral offences, citing delays in the prosecution of cases.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, made the appeal on Friday in Abuja during the commission’s first regular quarterly consultative meeting with the media.

“A major obstacle to the speedy dispensation of justice in this regard is that electoral offences are not time-bound as is the case with post-election offences handled by tribunals,” Yakubu stated.

He noted that electoral offences are currently prosecuted by Magistrate and State High Courts within the jurisdiction where they occur, without priority attention, as courts handle various other cases.

“Consequently, electoral offences are carried over from one general election to another, which may sometimes affect diligent prosecution. It is therefore imperative to renew our call for the creation of the Electoral Offences Tribunal, which will have a specific jurisdiction and limited timeframe for the speedy dispensation of cases,” he added.
