Vatican Prepares To Select New Pope

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 22, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Pope Francis, who died Monday at age 88, will be succeeded following a papal conclave in the Sistine Chapel.

After nine days of official mourning, cardinals from around the world will assemble in the Chapel to cast secret ballots.

The election process typically lasts two to three weeks; all ballots are burned after each round of voting.

Once a new pope is elected, white smoke will signal the result from the Chapel’s chimney. A Mass celebrating the inauguration of the 267th pope is scheduled for a few days thereafter.

In the interim, Cardinal Kevin Farrell an Irish‑born prelate who holds U.S. citizenship will serve as camerlengo.

He will oversee day‑to‑day Vatican administration and manage all preparations for the conclave.

Protests in Jos over Plateau killings

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Fresh protests broke out on Monday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, in response to the continued killings of indigenous residents by suspected Fulani militants.

Led by Christian leaders, including the Plateau State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Polycarp Lubo, demonstrators gathered at the Fawvwei Junction community road, resulting in major traffic congestion and leaving many commuters stranded.

The protest follows a surge in violent attacks across Plateau communities, particularly in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas, where over 100 people have reportedly been killed in the past two weeks.

“We are not happy over the continuous attacks and killings by gunmen in our communities. That’s why we have come out again to protest these happenings,” said one of the protesters, Gyang Dalyop.

Another demonstrator, Hannatu Philip, urged the government to act urgently, warning that the situation could worsen if not addressed promptly.

The protesters, carrying placards with various messages, marched toward the Rayfield Government House to demand immediate security intervention.

Trump Orders American Flags Flown At Half-Mast to Honour Pope Francis

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday directed that American flags be flown at half-staff nationwide in honour of Pope Francis.

The order follows a post on Trump’s Truth Social account in which he wrote: “Rest in Peace, Pope Francis! May God bless him and all who loved him!”

In a formal statement, Trump announced that he had signed an executive order mandating that all U.S. flags—federal, state, and military—be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for the late pontiff.

“As a mark of respect for the memory of His Holiness Pope Francis, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on the day of interment,” the statement read.

The directive also extends to all U.S. embassies, consular offices, and military installations abroad for the same duration.

Trump described Pope Francis as a “good man” who “worked so hard and loved the world.”

No Deal Yet on Enugu Airport Concession – Keyamo

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has dismissed reports claiming that a lengthy concession period had been agreed upon for the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, the minister described the report as “utterly baseless and untrue.”

Keyamo clarified that while the federal government is exploring concession options and has received proposals from interested companies, no final decision has been made regarding the Enugu airport.

The development comes amid heightened attention on the airport, following Air Peace’s recent suspension of flight operations due to infrastructural issues. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) subsequently closed the airport to commence emergency rehabilitation of the runway.

Moshood added that several airports across the country are currently operating at a loss and require monthly subsidies from the government, a situation that underscores the need to consider concession arrangements.

President Tinubu To Return Today – Bayo Onanuga

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria today following official visits to France and the United Kingdom.

The announcement was made on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, via a post on his X handle.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will return home today,” Onanuga stated.

President Tinubu departed Nigeria on April 2 for a short working visit to Paris, France. According to earlier statements from the Presidency, the trip was intended for the President to assess the midterm performance of his administration and evaluate key milestones.

During the visit, the President was also expected to review the progress of ongoing reforms and engage in strategic planning ahead of his administration’s second anniversary. Onanuga noted that the trip served as a period of reflection to inform future plans aimed at deepening reforms and accelerating national development.

Despite being abroad, the Presidency maintained that the President remained actively engaged in governance. Onanuga previously stated that President Tinubu would return in “about a fortnight.”

Amid criticism over the President’s extended absence, especially in light of ongoing security challenges in the country, the Presidency on April 17 reiterated that President Tinubu was still overseeing affairs of state from abroad.

“His absence remains temporary and in line with the communicated timeframe of approximately two weeks,” the Presidency said, adding that the President would return to Abuja following the conclusion of the Easter holiday.

The Presidency also acknowledged the concerns of Nigerians and assured the public of the President’s continued dedication to his responsibilities.

Pope Francis Dies At 88

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, has died. The Vatican announced his passing in a statement released on Easter Monday.

According to the statement, the pope died at 7:35 a.m. local time at his residence in Casa Santa Marta within the Vatican.

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” the statement read. “His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”

The Vatican noted his commitment to the Gospel and his advocacy for the poor and marginalized, commending his soul to “the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere, and the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years.

He joined the Society of Jesus in 1958 after recovering from a serious illness and was ordained a priest in 1969. He served as Jesuit provincial superior in Argentina from 1973 to 1979.

In 1998, he became Archbishop of Buenos Aires and was appointed a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001. He played a key role during Argentina’s 2001 economic crisis and was seen as a political rival by former presidents Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

Following Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation in 2013, a papal conclave elected Bergoglio as pope on March 13 of that year. He chose the name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Pope Francis was widely recognized for his humility, emphasis on mercy, and dedication to interfaith dialogue and social justice throughout his papacy.

Tensions Behind Closed Doors: What Really Happened Between Foreign Minister Tuggar and Governor Bala Mohammed

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

In the wake of conflicting reports surrounding a heated exchange between Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Governor Bala Mohammed, fresh accounts are emerging that cast doubt on the narrative being pushed by loyalists of the Bauchi State governor.

According to a credible source present at the meeting—who spoke under condition of anonymity—claims that the Minister was physically assaulted are “entirely fabricated and implausible.” The source stated, “You know that’s not true. The Minister is an athlete and is more physically fit. If it came to a fight, it’s impossible for him to be slapped without a corresponding action. So it’s totally untrue and impossible. It is just the machinations of traducers loyal to the government.”

Eyewitness accounts indicate that tensions began when members of Governor Bala Mohammed’s entourage reportedly made snide remarks directed at the Foreign Minister. Matters escalated when Governor Mohammed allegedly insulted the Minister’s father—a respected elder statesman of both the First and Second Republics.

This provocation led Minister Tuggar to confront the governor directly, challenging him to repeat the insult and warning that such disrespect would not go unanswered. The confrontation reportedly caused the Governor to retreat, at which point the Deputy Governor attempted to intervene. Tuggar firmly warned him off, signaling that the matter did not concern him.

Contrary to reports circulated by supporters of the Governor, no physical altercation took place, and suggestions that the Minister was humiliated are categorically false. The incident occurred in the presence of Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, who, recognizing the rising tension, asked former Governor Adamu Mu’azu to step in and calm the situation.

Observers see the spread of misinformation as a coordinated attempt to discredit Minister Tuggar, a diplomat known for his measured temperament and national service. Those familiar with the dynamics say the campaign of falsehood reflects growing unease within certain political circles over the Minister’s rising profile.

As facts continue to emerge, the incident underscores the deepening rivalries within the political elite and the importance of verifying narratives before accepting them as truth.

Frozen Fish, Pepper, and Tomatoes Price Increase over 100% in Lagos

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 17, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Residents of Lagos experienced sharp fluctuations in food prices in April 2025, with increases in the cost of essential items reflecting the broader inflationary pressures across Nigeria.

According to the latest Nairametrics Food Price Survey conducted across four major markets—Mile 12, Mushin, Daleko, and Oyingbo—prices of key staples such as frozen fish, pepper, and tomatoes surged by over 100%, compounding the strain on household budgets.

In contrast, the survey recorded price declines in both local and foreign rice varieties, offering slight relief to consumers. However, the overall market landscape remained volatile, with several items registering double-digit price hikes.

The report attributes the rising food costs to multiple factors, including disruptions in supply chains, increased transportation expenses, adverse weather affecting harvests, and insecurity in major food-producing regions.

The April 2025 snapshot of the Lagos food market underscored a climate of extremes, as residents navigated unpredictable price movements across critical commodities.

Trump To Shut Down US Embassies in Africa

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 17, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

he administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering the closure of nearly 30 American embassies and consulates across the globe, including several in Africa, as part of a broad plan to scale back the country’s diplomatic footprint.

According to a CNN report on Wednesday, which cited an internal U.S. State Department document, embassies in the Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Lesotho, and South Sudan are among those proposed for closure. A U.S. consulate in South Africa is also reportedly on the list.

The document reportedly recommends the closure of 10 embassies and 17 consulates. The targeted posts span across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, with embassies in Malta, Luxembourg, Lesotho, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan specifically mentioned.

The proposal is said to be part of a broader initiative by the Trump administration—allegedly influenced by the Elon Musk-backed Department of Government Efficiency—to significantly reduce the size and expenditure of federal agencies, including the State Department.

The document also suggests a reduction in U.S. diplomatic presence in countries such as Somalia and Iraq, both of which have played key roles in America’s counterterrorism strategy.
