Abia APC Disowns Orji Kalu’s Endorsement of Governor Otti

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has distanced itself from Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s recent visit to Governor Alex Otti, stating that the engagement was carried out in the senator’s personal capacity and not on behalf of the party.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s Acting Publicity Secretary, Sterling Urakpa, the APC strongly disapproved of Kalu’s commendation of the Labour Party-led administration in the state.

“Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s visit to Governor Alex Otti was a personal engagement. It does not reflect the position or endorsement of the Abia State APC,” the statement read.

The party maintained that Kalu’s actions and remarks were inconsistent with its official stance on governance in Abia.

“The party remains firm in its position that the Labour Party government in Abia is fraught with unresolved conflicts of interest, a troubling lack of transparency, and the concealment of project costs and contract details,” the statement added.

Wike Urges PDP to Zone 2027 Presidential Ticket to South

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to zone its presidential ticket to the southern region of Nigeria for the 2027 general elections.

Wike made the call on Monday while reading a communiqué issued after a meeting of party stakeholders under the banner of the “Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP.”

“In the spirit of fairness, inclusion, federal character principles, and respect for our party constitution, the party must make an unequivocal pronouncement zoning its presidential candidate to the South in the 2027 elections, after the unbroken years of Northern presidency under President Muhammadu Buhari,” the communiqué stated.

The document also emphasized that only the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, is constitutionally empowered to issue notices for meetings of the National Convention, National Executive Committee (NEC), National Caucus, and the National Working Committee (NWC).

It further declared that any notices or actions not issued by the National Secretary, including correspondences with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), are “null and void and of no effect whatsoever.”

Nigerian Pilgrims Begin Return Journey After Successful 2025 Hajj in Saudi Arabia

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Nigerian pilgrims who participated in the 2025 Hajj are set to begin their return journey as Saudi Arabia on Monday officially declared the successful and peaceful completion of this year’s pilgrimage for the Islamic year 1446.

According to Saudi authorities, over 1.67 million pilgrims took part in the sacred rites, including thousands of Nigerians.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has announced that return flights for Nigerian pilgrims will commence on June 9. The Commission confirmed that all pilgrimage activities had concluded smoothly.

While many pilgrims expressed gratitude for the opportunity to fulfill the religious obligation, NAHCON reported that seven Nigerian pilgrims died during the exercise. The deceased, who were from Oyo, Abia, Edo, Plateau, and Kano States, were said to have suffered cardiac arrest and heart failure. They were buried in Saudi Arabia in accordance with Islamic rites.

Despite the loss, the number of recorded deaths in 2025 is significantly lower than that of the previous year, when no fewer than 30 Nigerian pilgrims died during the Hajj.

APC Warns Ndume Over Comments Comparing Tinubu’s Future to Jonathan’s 2015 Defeat

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a warning to former Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume, following his recent remarks suggesting that President Bola Tinubu could suffer the same fate as former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 general election.

Ndume, in an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, warned that unless President Tinubu draws lessons from Jonathan’s 2015 loss, he could face an electoral upset in the next presidential poll. Jonathan, who contested under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), lost the 2015 election to APC candidate Muhammadu Buhari, who polled 15,424,921 votes against Jonathan’s 12,853,162.

Reacting to the statement, the APC’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, told The PUNCH on Monday that while the party respects divergent opinions, it maintains disciplinary mechanisms for members who go against the party’s code of conduct.

“The APC is a large and tolerant party that accommodates different views. However, that does not mean there are no limits. There are laid-down procedures for addressing any act considered as misconduct,” Ibrahim stated.

16-Year-Old Scores 351 in UTME Resit After Initial 158

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A 16-year-old student, Oyindamola Apampa, has recorded an impressive aggregate score of 351 in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), following a resit prompted by technical issues during her initial attempt.

Apampa, a student of Lagoon Secondary School in Lagos, scored 65 in English Language, 98 in Mathematics, 98 in Physics, and 90 in Chemistry.

In a statement on Tuesday, Apampa attributed her success to determination, strategic preparation, and divine favour. She explained that her first UTME attempt yielded a score of 158, but the result was later invalidated by the examination body due to technical disruptions at her centre.

“In my first UTME attempt, I scored 158. However, the results were widely criticised and later acknowledged by the authorities as inaccurate due to technical glitches affecting several examination centres, including mine,” she said.

Apampa noted that a resit was authorised to address the irregularities, during which she secured the score of 351.

She also acknowledged the role of her parents in creating a supportive academic environment at home, which she said contributed significantly to her performance.

“My parents made our home a positive place for studying. We have a full library in the family living room, in addition to a separate multimedia study room where the whole family often gets together to talk about different topics and help each other learn,” she said.

Apampa further credited a learning centre in Lekki, Lagos, for providing her with additional academic support through UTME preparation classes and regular mock examinations.

Nigerian Govt to Forfeit $4m World Bank Loan Over Audit Failures

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Government is set to forfeit $4 million from a World Bank loan due to its inability to meet auditing standards tied to a key revenue reform involving the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

The forfeited fund is part of the $103 million Fiscal Governance and Institutions Project, a public financial management initiative financed through a credit facility from the International Development Association (IDA).

According to a World Bank restructuring paper dated June 2025, the revenue assurance audit for the FIRS and Customs, covering the 2018 to 2021 financial years, was deemed unsatisfactory. The report submitted by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation failed to meet international auditing standards and was therefore assessed as “not achieved” by the Independent Verification Agent.

“These Intermediate Results to be implemented by the Office of Auditor-General of the Federation were assessed as not achieved by the Independent Verification Agent because the reports submitted for verification did not meet the requisite international auditing standards,” the document stated.

The failed audit is one of ten performance-based conditions that the Federal Government was required to meet under the project. However, with the project scheduled to close on June 30, 2025, those conditions remain unmet.

As a result, the Federal Ministry of Finance has formally requested the cancellation of $10.4 million in project funds—$0.9 million in unused technical assistance funds and $9.5 million allocated to the unfulfilled performance-based conditions.

PDP Stakeholders Reaffirm Sam Anyanwu as National Secretary

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Eminent stakeholders and concerned leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reaffirmed Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of the party.

The resolution was part of a communiqué issued on Monday in Abuja following a closed-door meeting aimed at resolving the lingering crisis within the party. Participants at the meeting were drawn from across various states of the federation.

Reading the communiqué, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, said the reaffirmation of Anyanwu’s position was based on the stakeholders’ consensus and in accordance with a judgment of the Supreme Court.

Wike stated that the meeting reviewed the current state of the party and emphasized the need to uphold internal democracy, equity, and justice within its ranks.

He attributed the ongoing crisis in the PDP to the refusal of some individuals to adhere to the party’s constitution. He specifically cited provisions in Section 36(1)(a)(b)(c), Sections 47(3)(5), and Section 48(1)(i), along with the Supreme Court’s definitive ruling on the office of the National Secretary.

The minister expressed concern that the party risked collapse if urgent action was not taken to address what he described as divisive, desperate, and selfish tendencies that undermined the PDP ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Tinubu, Akpabio, Governors Urge Unity, Hope as Nigerians Celebrate Eid-el-Kabir

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 6, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Bola Tinubu, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, his deputy Senator Barau Jibrin, and several state governors have joined millions of Muslim faithful across the country in celebrating this year’s Eid-el-Kabir.

In separate messages, the leaders emphasised the importance of unity, sacrifice, and compassion, calling on Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to national progress.

Eid-el-Kabir, also known as Eid al-Adha, is a major Islamic festival commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail, in obedience to Allah. The occasion is marked by prayers and the slaughter of rams and other animals as a symbol of devotion and generosity.

President Tinubu, in his statement, described the celebration as “a time for gratitude to Almighty Allah for His countless mercies upon us as individuals and a nation.”

He urged Nigerians to reflect on the values of sacrifice, devotion, and selflessness that define the season, while also embracing resilience, tolerance, and a shared commitment to national development.

“Though the journey has not been easy, and some doubted our direction, the resilience of public and private sector leaders, along with the steadfast support of most Nigerians, is yielding results. I assure you that the toughest days are behind us,” he said.

The president added that recent reforms are beginning to show positive outcomes, and called on citizens to remain patient and hopeful.

“We may not yet be where we aspire to be, but I urge all Nigerians not to lose hope. Let us hold on to our faith and persevere. Our reforms are gaining traction, with key economic indicators now moving in a positive direction. Soon, all will feel the benefits,” Tinubu said.

He also called for prayers for Nigeria’s frontline security personnel, who he said continue to make sacrifices for the safety of the nation.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in her goodwill message, congratulated Muslims on the occasion and encouraged acts of kindness and charity.

“This is a time of deep reflection on the values of sacrifice, obedience, compassion, and faith,” she said. “It is also a time to show kindness and generosity. I urge you to remember your neighbours and extend a hand of love and support, especially to the less privileged.”

Other political leaders echoed similar sentiments, urging Nigerians to use the festive period to promote peace, love, and national unity.

David Beckham to Receive Knighthood from King Charles III

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 6, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Former England football captain David Beckham is set to be awarded a knighthood by King Charles III next week in recognition of his contributions to football and charity, according to reports on Friday.

Beckham, 50, is expected to be named in the King’s Birthday Honours List, the BBC and other outlets reported. The honour will see him take the title of “Sir David,” while his wife, Victoria Beckham, will become “Lady Beckham.”

The football icon joins a list of celebrated British sports figures who have received knighthoods, including former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and tennis star Sir Andy Murray.

Beckham earned 115 caps for England and enjoyed a distinguished club career with Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain. He currently serves as president and co-owner of Major League Soccer side Inter Miami and co-owns English League Two club Salford City.

Previously, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003, a lower-ranking honour in the UK honours system. Victoria Beckham later received the same title for her contributions to the fashion industry.

Last month, Beckham was named among Time magazine’s 100 most influential figures in philanthropy. He serves as an official ambassador for The King’s Foundation, focusing on youth education and environmental awareness, and has been a UNICEF goodwill ambassador since 2005.

Beckham was previously considered for a knighthood after his role in London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. However, reports indicated his nomination was delayed due to concerns over his involvement in a tax avoidance scheme, from which he was later cleared.

Musk vs. Trump: Billionaire and President Clash Over “Big Beautiful Bill”

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 6, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Donald Trump and billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk are locked in a bitter public feud that has gripped Washington and beyond. What began as a policy disagreement over Trump’s sweeping domestic legislation has spiraled into a war of words, with personal insults, explosive accusations, and threats of economic retaliation dominating headlines.

The conflict ignited when Musk, former head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), publicly denounced Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” a landmark legislative package that narrowly passed the House last month.

The bill, championed by Trump, promises massive tax cuts, significant reductions in federal spending, and strengthened border security.

Musk, however, slammed it on X as a “disgusting abomination,” warning that its projected $2.4 trillion to $5 trillion deficit increase would undermine his efforts to curb government waste.

His posts urging lawmakers to “KILL the BILL” put him at odds with Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, who defended the legislation as a cornerstone of a broader fiscal strategy.

Tensions had been simmering long before the public clash. Musk’s 130-day tenure at DOGE, ending on May 30, 2025, was marked by bold moves—slashing federal jobs and disrupting agency operations—but also friction with White House insiders.

Chief of Staff Susie Wiles reportedly grew frustrated with Musk’s unilateral actions, such as issuing directives to federal workers via X without consulting senior staff.

Earlier in the year, Musk’s push to dissuade Trump from imposing widespread tariffs, citing risks to Tesla’s global sales and broader economic stability, further highlighted their diverging priorities.

Trump’s refusal to relent, coupled with Musk’s public spats with trade adviser Peter Navarro, laid the groundwork for the current conflict.

The feud exploded on June 5, 2025, when Musk and Trump traded barbs on X and Truth Social. Trump accused Musk of opposing the bill to protect Tesla’s interests, particularly as the legislation eliminates electric vehicle tax credits.

He escalated the attack by mocking Musk’s loyalty, suggesting he suffered from “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” and threatening to cancel billions in federal contracts with Musk’s companies, including SpaceX, a vital NASA partner.

Musk fired back with unprecedented ferocity, claiming on X that Trump’s 2024 election victory relied on his $270 million in campaign support, decrying the president’s “ingratitude.”

He endorsed a post calling for Trump’s impeachment and replacement by Vice President JD Vance, and in a stunning escalation, alleged that Trump’s name appears in the unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files, writing, “That is the real reason they have not been made public.

Have a nice day, DJT!” Trump retaliated by pulling the nomination of Musk’s preferred NASA chief and renewing threats against SpaceX contracts.

Musk briefly announced plans to decommission the Dragon spacecraft, critical for NASA’s space station missions, before backtracking to avoid crippling U.S. space operations.

The feud’s repercussions are far-reaching. Tesla’s stock plunged 14.3% on June 5, erasing roughly $150 billion in market value, as investors braced for potential fallout from Trump’s tariff policies and contract threats.

The rift has also strained Republican unity, with House members caught between loyalty to Trump and Musk’s financial influence through his super PAC.

Representative Troy Nehls called Musk’s attacks “irresponsible,” while others, like Representative Gabe Evans, expressed hope for reconciliation.

In the Senate, Musk’s opposition could tip the scales against the bill, already facing skepticism from fiscal hawks like Senators Rand Paul and Mike Lee.

Nonpartisan analyses warn that the bill’s deficit expansion, combined with Trump’s tariffs, risks economic turmoil, potentially triggering a recession by late 2025, as Musk has cautioned.
