Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno Dumps PDP, Joins APC

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 6, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made on Friday during a press briefing at the Government House in Uyo, the state capital.

Eno said the decision to switch parties followed three months of consultations with key stakeholders across the state. He expressed appreciation to the PDP for the support extended to him during his time in the party but noted that it was time to make what he described as a “progressive move.”

According to the governor, his defection was motivated by his admiration for President Bola Tinubu and the desire to align Akwa Ibom State with the federal government in order to secure continued developmental benefits.

“After completing the rounds of my consultation as your servant whom you have elected to serve, I have therefore decided to progressively move to the APC,” Eno stated.

“We are joining the APC today in the state’s interest and because of our critical admiration and respect for President Tinubu and to provide the needed support for Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.”

He added that the move was not from a position of weakness but of strength, and reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Akwa Ibom irrespective of party affiliations.

The event was attended by several APC governors, including the Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma; Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos); Governor Dapo Abiodun (Ogun); Governor Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta); Governor Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi); Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo); and Governor Bassey Otu (Cross River), among others.

Pottery, capable of restoring wellness, economic development- Tade Craft

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 6, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

As part of efforts aimed at reviving Nigeria’s culture through pottery, the founder, Tade Craft, Bamikole Blessing has spotlighted the essence of culture and restoration of Nigeria’s heritage, exploring
pottery not just as art, but a tool for mental wellness, and economic development.

Blessing while speaking at the National Pottery Conference 2025 in Abuja noted that the conference was born out of personal healing journey using pottery, explaining that the clay does much than its general use but restores wellness.

“This conference was born out of my own personal healing journey,”
“I discovered that clay does more than create — it restores. And we need more spaces like this that celebrate our cultural identity while offering therapeutic and economic value.”

The Minister of Arts, Culture & Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, applauded the conference as “a national necessity,” reinforcing the government’s support for reimagining indigenous culture as a driver of wellness and economic value.

Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Mr. Obi Asika, in his goodwill message emphasized that
Every pot holds a story. And every story, a nation’s heritage.”

Leading scholar and culture advocate, Prof. Farida Garkida, spoke on the role of women and science in indigenous craft
noted that “Pottery is not just creative — it is scientific. It connects chemistry, material science, and tradition. And women, historically, have been at the center of that innovation.”

She called for stronger research, investment in tools, and the need to document traditional knowledge for future generations.

Founder of Arewa Pottery, who shared a raw and moving story of how clay helped her process grief, illness, and infertility said “Pottery gave me space to feel without explanation. In our studio, we don’t just mold clay — we mold hope.”

Guests participated in an immersive potter’s wheel experience, viewed curated ceramic exhibitions, and explored conversations around self-expression, climate-conscious alternatives to plastic, and the future of handmade African design.

The tour offered a powerful reflection on leadership, legacy, and the role of civic memory in shaping national identity. For many attendees, it deepened the emotional resonance of the day connecting the creative future of Nigeria to the values and vision of its past.

Ronaldo’s Goal Secures Nations League Final Spot Amidst Record-Breaking Run

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 5, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Cristiano Ronaldo’s second-half strike was enough to hand Portugal a narrow victory over Germany in the first UEFA Nations League semi-final at the Munich Football Arena on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old forward once again demonstrated his enduring class, showing no signs of slowing down as he continues to set remarkable records both for his country and club side, Al Nassr.

Below are some of the milestones the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has achieved in recent months:

All-Time Highest Scorer in a Saudi Pro League Season
Ronaldo set a new record in the 2023–24 Saudi Pro League season by scoring 35 goals, surpassing the previous record of 34 set by Abderrazak Hamdallah in the 2018–19 campaign. His tally was achieved in 31 matches, averaging a goal every 75.6 minutes.

First Player to Score Against 200 Different Opponents
In November 2024, Ronaldo became the first footballer in history to score against 200 different opponents—comprising 152 club sides and 48 national teams—after netting against Al Qadisiyah. The feat further underscores his consistent scoring record over a two-decade career across various leagues and international tournaments.

Most Hat-Tricks for Al Nassr
Since joining the Saudi Arabian side in 2023, Ronaldo has scored six hat-tricks in 111 appearances for Al Nassr, bringing his career total to 66—the most among active players.

First Player to Win Golden Boot in Four Top-Flight Leagues
Ronaldo capped off the 2023–24 season by emerging as the top scorer in the Saudi Pro League, becoming the first player to win the golden boot in four different top-tier leagues: England (Premier League), Spain (La Liga), Italy (Serie A), and Saudi Arabia (Saudi Pro League).

Ronaldo’s recent performances continue to defy age, reinforcing his legacy as one of football’s most prolific and enduring goal scorers.

Ram Sellers Decry Low Patronage Ahead of Eid-el-Kabir Celebration

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 5, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

As preparations for the Eid-el-Kabir festival intensify, ram sellers at major markets in Ogun and Lagos states have expressed concerns over low patronage, attributing it to the rising cost of rams and the prevailing economic challenges.

Traders at the Ibafo, Kara, and Agege markets, who spoke with our correspondents on Wednesday, said the high cost of transporting rams from Northern Nigeria had significantly affected their selling prices, resulting in reduced customer turnout compared to the same period last year.

At the Ibafo market, a trader, Rabiu Abubakar, lamented the poor sales, noting a sharp contrast to the previous year’s performance.

“If you were here at this time last year, you wouldn’t see people sitting idle. Sales were very impressive then, but this year, things have been slow,” he said.

According to him, rams that sold for between N150,000 and N180,000 last year now cost between N250,000 and N280,000—an increase of over 55 percent.

“We cannot sell at a loss. We are pricing based on our cost, which is much higher this year due to the increase in prices from the North,” he added.

Another trader, Sabo Sheu, echoed Rabiu’s sentiments, highlighting transportation costs as a major factor contributing to the hike in prices.

He explained that the cost of moving livestock from the North to the Southwest had significantly increased, further compounding the pricing challenges and discouraging buyers.

EFCC Arraigns Two Chineese Illegal Miners for Unlawful Exportation of Minerals

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 4, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday arraigned two suspected illegal miners before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The suspects were brought before the court by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the EFCC on a five-count charge bordering on unlawful possession and exportation of mineral resources.

One of the charges read: “That you, Zhang Hong Lin, Gao Pei Hai, and Gao Pei Yu (at large), sometime in 2025 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, conspired between yourselves and with intent to defraud the Federal Government of Nigeria of the revenue accruing therefrom and without the permission of the appropriate authority, engaged in the exportation of ‘Mica products, copper bearing and lithium bearing mineral resources’ out of Nigeria, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 8 (a) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, 1983 and punishable under Section 8 of the same Act.”

The defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Following their plea, prosecution counsel Bilkisu Buhari requested a trial date and urged the court to remand the defendants in a correctional facility.

Defence counsel Jeremiah Okoro, however, asked the court to allow his clients remain in EFCC custody pending the determination of their bail application.

Justice Aneke declined the request and ordered that the defendants be remanded in a correctional centre. The case was adjourned to July 4, 2025, for trial.

The EFCC had arrested the two Chinese nationals on May 9, 2025, along with six Nigerians, over the alleged illegal mining activities in the Ogere area of Ogun State.

DSS Tasks Court to Stop Pat Utomi Shadow Government Rallies

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 4, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Department of State Services (DSS) has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Professor Pat Utomi, from organizing rallies in relation to a pending suit over his alleged plan to establish a shadow government.

In a fresh application filed on Wednesday, the DSS, through its counsel Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN), asked the court to restrain Utomi and his associates from making public statements or staging rallies concerning the proposed shadow government.

The agency stated that intelligence reports indicate Utomi, who is currently outside the country, intends to return on June 6 to embark on roadshows and rallies under the pretext of exercising freedom of speech and association.

The DSS alleged that the planned activities are aimed at inciting public unrest in pursuit of the formation of an alternative government or cabinet.

The development is connected to an earlier suit instituted by the DSS against Utomi, challenging the legality of his purported plans. The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/937/2025, seeks a declaration that the move is unconstitutional and represents an attempt to usurp the powers of the current administration.

Justice James Omotosho has scheduled the matter for hearing on June 25.
