Singer, Esegine Allen, aka Orezi has asserted that afrobeats music without him is “not worth listening to”.

Speaking in an interview with Gehn Gehn TV, Orezi who has been quiet for some years, vowed to make a comeback and “dominate” the Nigerian music industry.

Describing himself as a lion, the ‘Shoki’ crooner boasted that his next single would be a hit.

He said, “Afrobeats without me are not worth listening to. A lion cannot miss the hunt. On my shoulders I would carry afrobeats to the next level and I will dominate.

“The difference between me and other artistes is that I am different. I don’t follow rules. Rules are for regular artistes. I am Orezi.”

Traders fear disease outbreak over refuse in Ogun market

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 6, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Traders in Agunloye Market in Ado, the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State have appealed to relevant government agencies to clear the heap of refuse in the market.

They said if left unattended to, the situation may lead to an outbreak of diseases in the market.

When our correspondent visited the market on Thursday, it was observed that the heap of refuse was located at the centre of the market with stench oozing from it.

The market leader of Ado-Odo, Babatunde Bakare, noted that the stench coming from the refuse heap has deterred customers from patronising the market while residents in the area have also complained of health issues occasioned by the refuse.

Inside Kwara Community, Ijara-Isin, Where Residents Have Own ‘Currency’

Bakare said, “We have made efforts to call on the government, most especially those in the area office close to us, to see ways they can help us to evacuate the refuse because it has deterred people from patronising the market because it is closer to the foodstuffs stand.

“Also, the refuse heap is about 20 metres away from houses across the market. If you get to our health centre, there are several reports of health issues, which have been linked to the refuse dump. Although the market activities come up every five days, the dangers of the odour coming from the market has put residents at health risks.”

Bakare appealed to the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, and the local government authorities to come to their rescue by evacuating the refuse to save the community from airborne diseases and food poisoning.

A community leader who identified herself simply as Mrs Amoleogun said that whenever it rains, the odour becomes unbearable for residents of the area.

“We are appealing to the government to come and help us to clear this refuse. We are at risk of diseases because of the odour that comes from the refuse heap especially when it rains. We have reached out to local authorities but nothing has been done,” She said.

The community youth leader, Adelaja Adeyinka, urged the government to come to the community’s rescue to avert the outbreak of diseases.

“The government should come and help us to evacuate this refuse so that cases of disease spread can be averted,” Adeyinka said.

The local government chairman, Sheriff Musa, did not respond to calls made to his line while the mobile of the Press Officer, Ogun State Ministry of Environment, Rotimi Oduniyi, was switched off as of the time of filing this report.

Kwara Varsity Trains Women Farmers On Climate Change Mitigations

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 5, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has organised a training programme for women farmers on how to mitigate the effects of climate change on agricultural practice.

The university also provided non- cash revolving facilities for the 90 women farmers that participated in the programme, held at the institution’s International Conference Centre in Ilorin, the state capital.

The institution organised the training programme in collaboration with Olayinka Yusuf of the Gender and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Network (GRAIN).

One of the resource persons at the training programme tagged, “Artificial Intelligence For Women In Agriculture (AI4WIA),” Dr Olatunji Yusuf of the Agricultural Economy Department of KWASU, said the university organised the programme to train the women farmers on artificial intelligence needed to mitigate the effects of climate change on agricultural production.

“Agriculture in Africa is rain- dependent and rain has become erratic because of change in weather. Therefore, there is the need for adequate planning to mitigate the effects of erratic rainfall due to climate change on agricultural production.

“This is the main reason why our university deemed it fit to inculcate artificial intelligence in our women farmers to enable them farm effectively. Our focus is on women farmers because of the role they play in the family and community,” Yusuf explained.

Teachers’ Day: Addressing Nigeria’s teacher shortage

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 5, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

THE celebration today of World Teachers’ Day reminds everyone that teachers are the bedrock of any modern society. Apart from shaping the future of generations, they serve as role models for the youth. Beyond speeches, President Bola Tinubu and his education ministers, and the state governments should undertake a critical review of Nigeria’s education system, including how the Nigerian teacher has fared, as a prelude to sweeping reforms.

This year’s theme, “The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse Teacher Shortage,” speaks to a major gap in Nigeria’s education sector; the shortage of qualified teachers and should serve as another wake-up call.

October 5 every year is set aside, explained UNESCO, to celebrate the resilience of teachers all around the world. It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1996 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions.

Being a teacher, according to UNESCO, provides the unique opportunity to make a transformative and lasting impact on the lives of others, contributing to shaping sustainable futures and offering personal fulfilment.

However, the world faces an unprecedented global teacher shortage exacerbated by a decline in their working conditions and status, said the UN.

Nigeria’s case is troubling. There are not enough teachers for the teeming student population. One reason cited is the poor welfare of teachers in the country, which has driven very bright minds away from the profession into more lucrative vocations.

According to the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, the country has only 2.3 million registered teachers on its database as of 2023. This is barely enough to cater to the over 20.1 million out-of-school children (per UNESCO).

There are multiple challenges. UNICEF noted that in the North-East, the teacher-to-student ratio is 1:124. Little wonder the region hosts the highest population of out-of-school children

Teachers in Togo can earn as much as $111 monthly, according to official figures. This is higher than the country’s minimum wage of $64 per month.

Today’s world is knowledge-driven. Competing requires acquisition of cutting-edge skills and information. Constantly, there should be better welfare package for the teachers.

The National Union of Teachers complains that teachers leaving the service in many states were not being replaced, while the quality of teaching is fast declining. The NUT’s calls for urgent and creative action by the state governments to accord priority to the education should resonate with the governors.

The Universal Basic Education Commission said there were 354,651 teachers for 7.2 million students in pre-primary schools; 915,593 teachers for 32 million students in primary schools; and 416,291 teachers for eight million students in junior secondary schools.

Over the years, the federal and various state governments have tried to address the problems; but the policies have proved to be inadequate. More should be done.

Recently, Nigeria saw a mass migration of teachers when the United Kingdom commenced a teacher’s recruitment, which will prioritise applicants from Nigeria and other developing countries. They will be paid thousands of pounds to teach 11-16 year-old children mathematics, languages and science.

To improve quality and avoid losing more competent ones, therefore, Nigeria’s governments should improve their training, welfare, and career progression.

Senate probes maltreatment of Nigerians in Ethiopia

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 5, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Senate has moved to investigate the alleged killings and imprisonment of over 250 Nigerians in Ethiopia.

This followed a motion, titled: “Urgent need to investigate the unlawful killings and incarceration of over 250 Nigerians in Ethiopia,” sponsored by the Minority Leader, Senator Simon Mwadkwon, (PDP Plateau North), and Senator Victor Umeh (YPP Anambra Central).

Presenting the motion, Mwadkwon urged the Senate to direct the Committees on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs to work with the Federal Government to immediately constitute a committee to visit the Republic of Ethiopia with a view to investigating what is happening to Nigerians in the foreign land.

He also called on the Federal Government to immediately direct the Ethiopian Embassy to collaborate with the delegation of the Senate Committees on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs to find a lasting solution to problems being faced by Nigerians held in Ethiopia.

Mwadkwon said, “The video clip being circulated in the social media indicates that Nigerians are held captives in the maximum prison of Ethiopia  and are in serious peril, which calls for an urgent intervention and thorough probe.”

He lamented that this was happening despite the clarion call for unity among nations of the world.

The Senate Leader said, “There is widespread information currently being circulated by Dr. Paul Ezike calling on the Nigerian Government to intervene on the inhumanity and torture that Nigerians are receiving in Ethiopia without evidence of the commission of any crime.

“Based on the widespread information being circulated, over 250 Nigerians who have continued to face this maltreatment and inhumanity have not committed any crime known to any law and there is no evidence of any court proceedings stating the categories of crimes they have committed or any court conviction in that regard.

“It is pathetic that a nation as populous as Nigeria, the giant of Africa, our citizens are being held in captivity in the 21st century where the call is for unity among nation-states but quite lugubriously that Ethiopia has chosen shallow path to maltreat and mistreat the citizens of Nigeria without any justification as shown in a video by Dr. Paul Ezike.
