Spanish clergy sexually abused over 200,000 children

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 27, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Over 200,000 minors are estimated to have been sexually abused in Spain by the Roman Catholic clergy since 1940, according to an independent commission published Friday.

The report did not give a specific figure but said a poll of over 8,000 people found that 0.6 percent of Spain’s adult population of around 39 million people said they had suffered sexual abuse by members of the clergy when they were still children.

The percentage rises to 1.13 percent — or over 400,000 people — when including abuse by lay members, Spain’s national ombudsman Angel Gabilondo told a news conference called to present the findings of the report.

The revelations in Spain are the latest to rock the Roman Catholic Church after a series of sexual abuse scandals around the world, often involving children, over the past 20 years.

But unlike in other nations, in Spain — a traditionally Catholic country that has become highly secular — clerical abuse allegations are only now gaining traction, leading to accusations by survivors of stonewalling.

“Unfortunately, for many years there has been a certain desire to deny abuses or a desire to conceal or protect the abusers,” said Gabilondo, a former education minister.

The report is critical of the attitude of the Catholic Church, calling its response to cases of child abuse involving the clergy “insufficient”. It recommended the creation of a state fund to pay reparations to victims.

Child protection offices

Just before the report was presented in parliament, the Spanish bishops conference said it would hold an extraordinary meeting on Monday to discuss its findings.

Spain’s parliament in March 2022 overwhelmingly approved the creation of an independent commission led by the country’s ombudsman to “shed light” on allegations of sexual abuse of “defenceless boys and girls” within the Catholic Church.

Spain’s Catholic Church, which for years flatly refused to carry out its own probe, declined to take part in the independent investigation, although it did cooperate by providing documents on cases of sexual abuse that had been collected by dioceses.

But as political pressure mounted, it tasked a private law firm in February 2022 with an “audit” into past and present sexual abuse by clergy, teachers and others associated with the Church, which should be completed by the end of the year.

The Spanish Church said in June it had discovered 927 cases of child abuse through a complaints procedure launched in 2020.

It argues it has set up protocols for dealing with sexual abuse and has set up “child protection” offices withing dioceses.

‘Tip of iceberg’

But a probe by top-selling daily newspaper El Pais which began in 2018 has since uncovered 2,206 victims and 1,036 alleged abusers dating back to 1927.

“According to experts, this is just the tip of the iceberg,” the newspaper wrote on Friday before the report was published.

The Church’s abuse crisis exploded onto the international stage in 2002 when the Boston Globe newspaper revealed priests had sexually abused children for decades and church leaders had covered it up.

Patterns of widespread abuse of children were later reported across the United States and Europe, in Chile and Australia, undercutting the moral authority of the 1.3 billion-member Church and taking a toll on its membership.

An independent commission in neighbouring France concluded in 2021 that some 216,000 children — mostly boys — had been sexually abused by clergy since 1950.

In Germany a study found 3,677 cases of abuse between 1946 and 2014 while in Ireland more than 14,500 people received compensation though a government scheme for those abused at juvenile facilities run by the Catholic Church.

BREAKING: EFCC detains Emefiele after DSS frees ex-CBN gov

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 27, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, is currently being detained in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Leading Reporters gathered that Emefiele, who is currently being interrogated at the National Headquarters of the anti-graft agency, Jabi, Abuja, was picked up by EFCC operatives Thursday night, less than an hour after he regained his freedom from the dungeon of the Department of State Services.

An impeccable source revealed the development to our correspondent Friday morning, noting that the EFCC is probing Emefiele over alleged impropriety during his term as the head of the apex bank.

“Yes, Emefiele is currently in our (EFCC) custody; he was arrested last night less than an hour after the DSS freed him. He’s currently being interrogated at the Headquarters, as he’s being investigated for alleged misappropriation of funds amongst other things during his term as CBN governor,” the source noted.

Our correspondent further gathered that fresh charges may be filed against Mr Emefiele by the EFCC.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, could not be reached for official confirmation when contacted by our correspondent on Friday.

Leading Reporters reports that Emefiele had been in the custody of the Department of State Services since June after President Bola Tinubu suspended him from office.

He was thereafter asked to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, then deputy governor, operations directorate at the apex bank.

A day after, the DSS announced that Emefiele was in its custody for ‘some investigative reasons’.

On July 25, he was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on “illegal possession” of firearms at a federal high court in Lagos and was granted bail in the sum of N20 million.

The two-count charge was later struck out on August 17 after the Federal Government withdrew the same.

However, a fresh 20-count charge was instituted against him over an alleged conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud, among others.

The arraignment has been stalled twice, and Emefiele was reported to have proposed a plea bargain agreement with the Federal Government.

The proposed agreement required Emefiele to resign as CBN governor and ‘disgorge’ some assets.

However, on September 22, the CBN officially confirmed Emefiele’s resignation after Olayemi Cardoso was appointed as substantive governor of the apex bank.

Supreme Court judgement: ‘Fight has just begun’ – Oby Ezekwesili

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 27, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Oby Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education, has declared that the fight has just begun following the Supreme Court judgement that upheld President Bola Tinubu’s election in the February 25 presidential election.

Leading Reporters reports that the judgement followed appeals filed against Tinubu’s election by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP.

Atiku and Obi approached the apex court to appeal the ruling of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal which dismissed their petitions against Tinubu.

“The fight for a Good Society has only now started and we know that nothing can defeat a People who have had enough of the invasive Cancer of Corruption and Criminality,” Oby Ezekwesili wrote on X.

“Read the story of the 70s Hong Kong to learn that in the quest for a Good Society, ‘it is never over until a people say it is over’.”

Akwa Ibom Govt Seals Two Banks Over Alleged Tax Evasion

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 27, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

“If, after 14 days, they do not comply, we have the mandate of the court to sell the property and recover the tax owed the state,” he said.

The Akwa Ibom State Government through its Internal Revenue Service has sealed three banks for their alleged failure to remit outstanding tax liabilities of N228m to the state government.

The banks were shut down on Thursday during an exercise conducted by the revenue board’s Enforcement and Recovery Department, following an order of Notice of Distrain from the Akwa Ibom State High Court, Eket Judicial Division.

The affected banks included two Keystone Bank branches, at Abak Road and Ikot Ekpene Road, Uyo, and Heritage Bank, located at Aka Road, Uyo.

Briefing journalists in Uyo, the board’s Executive Director, Enforcement and Recovery, Leo Umana, said Heritage Bank failed to remit its N100,270,910 tax liabilities to the state while Keystone Bank refused to pay N128,413,882 owed to the state government as tax liabilities.

“If, after 14 days, they do not comply, we have the mandate of the court to sell the property and recover the tax owed the state,” he said.

Umana said the banks were given warning notices but failed to comply after several months, adding that the AKIRS had exhausted reconciliation and negotiation opportunities with the financial organisations before resorting to court action.

According to him, under the law, the banks that are served the notice to distrain have 14 days to negotiate with AKIRS and vacate the order.

Supreme Court Verdict: We Now Know The Deeper Meaning Of INEC’s ‘Go-To-Court’ Mantra — Group

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 27, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Supreme Court’s validation of President Bola Tinubu as the winner of the 25th Feb. 2023 presidential election is in line with the ‘go-to-court’ mantra of the Prof Mahmoud Yakub-led Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Recall that the apex court dismissed the petitions of Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, and affirmed that APC’s Tinubu won the polls.

Hon Charles Anike, national president of the Eastern Union, told THE WHISTLER on Friday that the judgement would remain a testimony for years to come.

According to him, “We accept the decision of the justices of the apex court in good faith. We’re learning a lot about the operators of our institutions.

“We can now understand the deeper meaning of the ‘Go-to-Court’ mantra of INEC and APC. However, both the justices of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal and those of the Supreme Court must bear in their minds that the judgements they have declared will remain a testimony and references to their names, as they have laid precedents that will continue to be referenced for posterity.

“We encourage Nigerians to remain peaceful, focused and go about their lawful businesses. We continue to look forward to the grand finale of the judgments from the Supreme Court of Heaven because all power belongs to God.”

Police arrest 80-year-old man for attempting to defile minor in Jos

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 26, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Plateau State Police Command on Thursday paraded an 80-year-old man, identified as Peter Ashom, for allegedly attempting to defile an eleven-year-old girl in Jos.

The Command also paraded one Elijah Anthony and his mother for allegedly kidnapping and killing a five-year-old boy, Dawon Pam, in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area of the state.

The Police also paraded two women, daughter in-law and her mother in-law, for being in possession of seven bags of cannabis in Bokkos LGA of the state.

Parading the suspects alongside 34 others for different crimes ranging from culpable homicide, armed robbery, among others, Commissioner of Police, CP, Okoro Alawari, said the Command has succeeded in putting an end to the activities of some criminal minded individuals.

Alawari said, “On the 9th October, 2023, we received information that one Peter Ashom, an 80 year old man, lured an eleven year old girl into his room and attempted to have carnal knowledge of her under the pretense of sending her on errands anytime she goes to sell groundnuts.

“He threatened to kill her if she told anyone.

“The case is still under investigation and will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.”

He added, “On 13th October, 2023, at about 09:00 hours, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Jos, received a phone call that one Dawon Pam, five years old, is missing and that all search throughout the night proved abortive.

“But in the morning of 14th October, 2023, at about 05:40 hours, a pair of shoes belonging to the victim was found close to a handwritten note stating that if the father wants his child, he should give N5 million and that he should not call them but he
should send a text message through a phone number. The below GSM phone number was attached: 08186135490.

“Upon receipt of the report, a team of Police operatives led by SP Okala Ugbede swung into action and was able to trace the kidnappers on 23rd October, 2023, and arrested one of the culprits, Elijah Anthony, aged 17 years, of same address.

“Upon interrogation, he admitted and confessed to have conspired with one aka Malic of no fixed address and kidnapped the victim from his father’s compound to an uncompleted building in the community where they kept him and tied his mouth with elastic dural cloth to stop him from shouting.

“He also confessed that after collecting the sum of N400,000 from the victim’s parents, his accomplice, the said Malic who is now at large, strangled the victim, while he held his hands and legs.

“Thereafter, they took the body and dumped it in a swampy place close to the uncompleted building.”

“Based on the confession, a team of operatives visited the
scene, the corpse was recovered and taken to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital for confirmation and necessary action after which it was released to the parents for burial.

“Investigation is still ongoing with a view to arresting the fleeing suspect and any other accomplice”, he assured.

Also paraded were two women suspected to be cannabis dealers.

According to the CP, “On 25th October, 2023, at about 05:30 hours, SWAT operatives of the Command led by the DPO Bokkos Division, raided the residential premises of one Gabriel Dare of Kungul village, Richa District, Bokkos where the following suspects, one Mary Gabriel and one Briskilla Dare both of same address were arrested.

“The following items were found in their possession; seven 750kg bags containing dry leaves suspected to be cannabis, and three dane guns.

“The suspects were immediately arrested and taken to the Police station.

He added that investigation is still ongoing.

Alawari said the 39 suspects paraded for the aforementioned crimes were all arrested in October.

Breaking: Supreme Court upholds President Tinubu’s election, dismisses Atiku’s appeal

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 26, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

ABUJA– The Supreme Court, on Thursday, affirmed President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the valid winner of the presidential election that held in the country on February 25.

The apex court, in its lead judgement that was prepared and read by Justice Inyang Okoro, held that there was no merit in the petition that a former President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, filed to nullify the outcome of the election.

It held that Atiku did not prove that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, did not substantially comply with provisions of the Electoral Act, in the conduct of the election.

The apex court held that section 185(1) of the Evidence Act provided that an election should not be liable to be invalidated, when alleged non compliance did not substantially affect the outcome of an election.

It held that evidence contained in the record of the appeal showed that the Appellants abandoned the duty imposed on them by the law to not only prove the alleged non compliance, but to establish that failure of INEC to transmit results of the election through its IReV portal, influenced the outcome of the presidential poll.

The Supreme Court said it had in past judgements, made it clear that there was a difference between election result collation system and the IReV portal.

“Where the IReV portal fails, it does not stop the collation which up till the last election was manually done,” the court held.

Nevertheless, it stressed that INEC’s failure to electronically transmit results of the election, denied the electorates the opportunity to follow and cross-check results that were eventually uploaded.

“Truth must be told, the non transmission of results to the IReV portal may also reduce the confidence of the voting population in the electoral process,” the Supreme Court warned.

It held that the unavailability of results on INEC’s IReV portal “for whatever reason, could not be the reason for an election to be nullified.

Presidential tussle: 7 Supreme Court Justices to determine Tinubu, Atiku, Obi’s fate

Supreme Court delivers judgment on Atiku, Obi’s appeals against Tinubu tomorrow

The apex court held that Atiku and PDP did not prove that they suffered any miscarriage of justice as a result of the dismissal of their petition by the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC.

It described as misconceived and misplaced, Atiku’s contention that Tinubu ought not have been declared winner of the presidential election, having failed to secure 25% votes in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

The apex court affirmed the position of the PEPC that the FCT does not have a status that is more special than that of the 36 States of the federation.

It further upheld the striking out the evidence of some of the witnesses that testified for Atiku at the PEPC hearing, adding that most of the witnesses gave “inadmissible hearsay” evidence.

“The Appellants did not present any evidence to warrant the interference of the findings of the lower court,” head of the apex court panel, Justice Okoro, added.

On the issue that President Tinubu was involved in a drug related case in the USA that led to the forfeiture of $460, 000, the Supreme Court held that Tinubu raised the issue when the Respondents had already filed their process.

It held that the action denied the Respondents the right to fair hearing.

“The ruling of the lower court is unassailable and this court will not interfere,” it held.

The court held that whereas Atiku alleged that the result that was declared by INEC was not accurate, he, however, failed to put forward their perceived rightful result.

It held that the result announced by INEC was presumed as correct in the absence of “any rival or alternative result.”

“The figure before us shows that the 2nd Respondent won the highest number of votes and was duly declared winner.”

Consequently, the court, resolved all the issues that Atiku raised in his petition, against him.

“On the whole, having resolved all the issues against the Appellants, it is my view that there is no merit in this appeal and it is hereby dismissed.

“Judgement of the lower court delivered on September 6 is hereby affirmed. I shall make no order as to cost,” the Supreme Court held.

It will be recalled that INEC had on March 1, announced that Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, won the presidential contest, ahead of 17 other candidates that participated in the poll.

It declared that he garnered a total of 8,794,726 votes to defeat his two major rivals, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who came second with a total of 6,984,520 votes, and Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who came third with a total of 6,101,533 votes.

Lagos Impounds 100 Vehicles Picking Passengers On Bridges

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 26, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have impounded over 100 private and commercial vehicles operating illegal parking/garages on across the state.

The state government had last week given a 7-day vacation order to drivers operating on bridges across the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, who led the enforcement operations, said the exercise was carried out following the expiration of the vacation order.

According to Giwa, the enforcement operation was aimed at removing every infraction impeding the free flow of traffic on bridges in the state.

He said the vehicles were impounded at Ejalonibu, Obalende, Apongbon Ebute-Ero, and Idumota (Cater) bridges on Lagos Island.

Giwa described the activities of the drivers as nauseating, adding that they constitute a public nuisance by operating illegal parking/garages on bridges, thereby causing avoidable traffic gridlock and inconveniencing other road users.

“The enforcement operations would be a continuous exercise until zero tolerance on activities of these commercial bus drivers operating illegal parking/garages on top bridges is achieved in line with the ‘Theme+’ agenda of the present administration,” a statement by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, on Thursday, quoted him as saying.

“We would continue to ensure free flow of traffic movement by scaling up our enforcement and clampdown operations on these stubborn private/commercial bus drivers.”

The special adviser maintained that the activities of the bus drivers are contrary to provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

He, however, informed that the drivers of impounded vehicles would be prosecuted.

TASUED student protest serial rape and insecurity in hostels.

Students of Tai Solarin University Of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, have taken to the streets to protest the rising case of insecurity ravaging the student communities in the early hours of Thursday.

Leading Reporters reports that some suspected burglars went to a hostel, carted away valuables, transferred money from the occupants’ bank accounts, and allegedly raped four students on Tuesday. This caused pandemonium in the students’ community, and the government promised to apprehend the culprits.

The Students’ Union led the ‘walk against insecurity and rape’ to lend their voices to the security situation, create awareness about the dangers of rape, and show solidarity with the victims of the unfortunate event.

During the peaceful walk, students bore placards with inscriptions such as ‘Ijagun needs security,’ ‘Students’ lives matter,’ ‘Don’t molest girls,’ ‘Say No To Rape,’ ‘Please save us from rapists,’ ‘Stop gender violence,’ among others.

Leading Reporters gathered that the security situation had subjected the students to fear as they now have to sleep and walk in groups to forestall any attack.

The Students’ Union President, Akinjetan Emmanuel, said the stand of the leadership of the Union is to have a secured students’ community and that “We want security personnel deployed to the University community, and we also plead for the resuscitation of the deserted police station at Abapawa for the purpose of safety.”

He stated, “Hopefully, the deputy governor helps us achieve everything tabled to her on Tuesday at the meeting.”

“We are no longer safe; even in my hostel, we are always vigilant. The nearest police station is at Igbeba, which is far from the school. There can’t be an emergency; you expect the cops to arrest the situation in a few minutes.

A student who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Cultism leads to various menaces in our environment. The state government should deploy men of the Nigeria Police Force and other necessary security agencies to our institutions in Ogun State.”
