“Three Kaduna senators are my husbands” – Supreme Court justice nominee

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 21, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

One of the 11 nominees screened by the Senate for appointment as justice of the Supreme Court, Jummai Sankey, has described the three senators from Kaduna State as her “husbands”.

Sankey, who is the presiding justice of the Court of Appeal, Owerri division, said this when she appeared before lawmakers on Wednesday.

According to a video seen by Politics Nigeria, the senior lawyer had expressed worry that there was not a single lawmaker from her state of origin, Plateau, among the committee members.

She, however, took solace in the fact that there was a senator from Kaduna State in the team.

Justice Sankey went on to say that her husband hailed from Kaduna State and according to her, the Kaduna lawmakers were also her husbands.

“I come from Plateau State. I have noticed that I don’t have any representative backing me here. But, my state by marriage is Kaduna State,” she said.

“I’m very happy to see that I have representative, my husband, Senator Sunday Marshal here; he’s from Kaduna State and I consider them my husbands.”

BREAKING: Supreme Court Reserves Judgment In Kano Guber Dispute

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 21, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in the appeal over the Kano State governorship election.

A five-member panel of justices presided by Justice Inyang Okoro on Thursday reserved the judgment after listening to lawyers in the matter.

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State and the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) had filed the appeal challenging the November 17 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which nullified their victory in the March 19 governorship election.

The party are also notifying the apex court of the contradictions in the CTC of the judgment which upheld the governor’s election and awarded him the sum of N1 million in damages.

A three-member panel of justices led by Justice Moore A. Adumein upheld the appeal of Nasir Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The panel held that Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) was not a registered member of the party and, therefore, not qualified to contest the election.

However, in the long argument before the apex court on Thursday, parties raised issues concerning the jurisdiction of the court in political party membership of a candidate.

The lawyers also argued over whether the court could “visit the sin” of INEC’ failure to sign over 160,000 ballot papers on the voters in Kano State.

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 21, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the reintroduction of the popular school feeding program.

The program, previously suspended by the Muhammadu Buhari administration after years of operation, will now fall under the Ministry of Education, a shift from its previous placement under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

Minister of Education Prof Tahir Mamman, who revealed the president’s directive during a recent retreat, said if the learning crisis is not tackled, it will be difficult to address the challenges of out-of-school children.

He added that the retreat served as a brainstorming session to map out concrete steps for implementing existing policies and clearly assigning responsibilities to different agencies, all in the fight against the out-of-school children crisis.

Pull down all political billboards – Abia Gov Otti orders LG chairmen

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 21, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Ahead of the Christmas festivities, the Abia State Government has directed all local government council chairmen to dismantle all political billboards from the recent general elections.

Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, announced the order following this week’s state executive council meeting, presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

He also expressed regret that street trading in the state has become a menace and is adversely impacting the newly constructed roads by the government.

According to him, “Despite spirited efforts by the government to arrest the menace, it continues unabated,” warning that the government will not fold its arms and watch the anomaly continue.

“With all the efforts the government has made, this menace (street trading) keeps rearing its ugly head, particularly in Aba. Incidentally, most of the new roads that the government has constructed, people use them to trade, and this will not augur well for these new roads.

“There has been a lot of interface between government officials and the market authorities, and in other instances, the culprits as it were; everything has been done, but to no avail. Despite the fact that this government puts a human face on its activities, by the New Year, the government will go all out to enforce the law.”

The first group of Sri Lankans selected for jobs in the agricultural sector left for Israel last night (Dec 18).

According to the Foreign Employment Ministry, thirty (30) people were included in this group that left from the Katunayake Airport.

Another group of twenty (20) people will leave for Israel this morning (Dec 19), with another group of thirty (30) people is scheduled to be sent to Israel tonight.

Air tickets for the first batch of workers were handed over by the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara at a ceremony held yesterday to mark International Migrant’s Day.

During the event, the Minister stated that, according to a bilateral agreement between the two countries, 10,000 workers will be able to fly to Israel in the next few weeks.

Emphasizing that there is no need to give money to any party for these jobs, he said if it is discovered after going abroad that someone has paid money to obtain these job opportunities, they will be brought back, as both governments have reached an agreement on repatriating those who have paid money.

Anambra’s Battle Against Erosion: 169 Communities Struggle, Residents Seek Urgent Solutions

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 21, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Leading Reporters learnt that the several buildings, structures and roads have been destroyed, while over 100,000 persons have been displaced by the menace of gully erosion ravaging communities in Anambra State, South-East.
Leading Reporters also gathered that some of the communities mostly ravaged by the disaster include: Oba community in Idemili South Local Government Area, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Onitsha Inland in Onitsha North Local Government Area, Awada, Nkpor and Obosi communities in Idemili North Local Government Area, as well as Atani and Okpoko communities in Ogbaru Local Government Area, among several others.

One of the roads currently being ravaged by the disaster is the Onitsha-Owerri Road, which has become a nightmare to road users, because the erosion devastation has completely cut off one lane of the ever busy road.

The Onitsha-Owerri Expressway connects other South-East states and some parts of the South-South and recently, a devastating erosion cut off one lane of the busy expressway at Oba community, and since the incident happened in July, 2023, it has become a nightmare for road users.

The Agulu-Nanka Road axis and Alor-Nnobi Road have also been badly affected by the disaster, a situation that has attracted both national and international visitors and several others to the plight of road users.

Among the structures under serious erosion threat are the popular Rojeeny Games Village, Tansian University, and a multi-million naira plastics company located in Oba, near the Onitsha-Owerri Road.

Already, churches, schools, shops and several residential buildings worth billions of naira, including several failed roads in the inner communities, have been destroyed completely by the erosion menace.

However, both the federal and state governments are tackling few of the erosion menace in the state, such as the one along the Onitsha-Owerri road and some other major roads in the state.

This is just as the state Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odimegwu, has disclosed that no fewer than 160 out of 179 communities in Anambra State are currently grappling with the imminent threat posed by erosion gullies.

Odimegwu disclosed this while speaking at an award night organised by the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Awka branch, recently.

Odimegwu averred that the ravaging erosion menace across the state is caused by actions and inactions of the residents, which he said require collective efforts and expertise to control.

Emphasising the urgent need for collective action and expertise to mitigate the impact of the erosion menace, the commissioner added that negligence would undoubtedly continue exacerbating the environmental vulnerabilities.

He, however, applauded the ongoing rehabilitation works going on at some of the erosion sites, facilitated by the governor of the state, Chukwuma Soludo,  and emphasised the positive strides made in the ministry.

He said, “No fewer than 160 out of 179 communities in Anambra State are currently grappling with the imminent threat posed by erosion gullies.

“Environment is everybody’s business. Looking at what is happening in the state today, the ecological problems we are facing, it is high time we all took responsibility for our actions and our inactions.

“And the engineers must play their roles and ensure the right thing is done at every point in time, especially in the areas of the design and construction of buildings, because unsustainable designs and unprofessional construction are parts of the major causes of these environmental challenges.”

South-East PUNCH correspondent, who visited various erosion sites on Tuesday and Wednesday, gathered that a three-storey building and a school constructed close to the gully at Nkisi-Aroli Street at Onitsha Inland community, a highly populated area, recently caved in as the erosion had continued to expand.

Following the development, residents who spoke to our correspondent in separate interviews, said more buildings have been submerged while many occupants have been displaced and their belongings destroyed.

A septuagenarian and retired educationist, Onwa Chukwudili, told South-East PUNCH correspondent that he had suffered serious hardship in the past three years due to the erosion.

Chukwudili stated, “I thank God that I am still surviving, and I thank the state government for the much it has done, but as you can see, the calamity is not over yet, as it is rapidly ravaging properties.

“I thank our monarch and the town union’s leadership for the relief items they have so far provided for the victims. The state government has diverted the water channel from the main erosion gully site, but it has yet to be sealed. That is our concern now.”

Another resident of the area, Amechi Emenike, urged the state government to rescue them from the area, adding, “We want a proactive measure, not political promises made by past administrations.”

A community leader and President-General, Onitsha Development Union, Chikwuma Ugwu, told our correspondent that since the erosion started in late 2019 and became severe in 2020, they had approached the various arms of the government to no avail.

He added, “Our monarch has done a lot too, by using his influence at a time when the then Minister of State for Environment, as well as officials of Anambra State government visited the site.

“Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project officials and even government officials were here to look at it. The governor had some compassion and he started a palliative measure.”

He, however, appealed to Governor Soludo to complete the work and desilt the Nkisi River for the stream to flow freely, while tasking the Federal Government for support.

It was tales of woes of devastation caused by the erosion from farmers and residents of other communities visited by South-East PUNCH in Atani and Okpoko communities in Ogbaru Local Government Area.

A resident and a farmer in the community, who gave her name as Chinwe Ozor, said the area is presently battling the existential threat from the menace, adding that a torrential rain some months ago, caused the collapse of a two-storey building there; another two-storey building caved in at the peak of the 2022 rainy season

Ozor said, “This erosion started about four years ago, and the community has done everything humanly possible to checkmate it. We have spent several millions of naira with the collaborative efforts of people in the Diaspora and some of our members in the House of Assembly, but up till now, there is no hope to the end yet as there still more work to be done.

“No intervention whatsoever has come to us either from the Federal or state government. Although, recently, the state government has started some rehabilitation works, but it is still a far cry to the devastation caused by the menace.

“Year 2024 is around the corner and every efforts should be intensified to ensure this menace is tackled head-on. Our farmlands have also been destroyed by this erosion and as it is now, we don’t know where we are going to farm during the 2024 farming season.”

Another farmer from Atani in Ogbaru LGA, Marcel Okonkwo, who conducted our correspondent around the erosion site in the community, said, “Ogbaru is an agrarian community, and it is a major farm settlement in Anambra State, and also famous in fish production.

“The menace of erosion has made life unbearable for us. Many buildings as well as Atani Community Primary School have almost been cut off from the community due to the disaster.

“We have seen hell because of gully erosion, and we can no longer control it. Some government officials have been here in the past but after visiting us, they never did anything.

“We are begging Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the Federal Government to please save us from this impending disaster. We have serious ecological challenge that demands urgent intervention. Since 51 years ago when I was born, my community has been under threat of erosion. We also produce cassava and palm oil in large quantities, but erosion menace is not allowing us meet our full potential.

“Teachers and health workers reject postings to the community due to bad road, and it has serious implications on our people. On our own, we have done our best with the support of our people in the Diaspora. We are now overwhelmed. This is ecological disaster.”

The monarch of the community, Igwe Joseph Nwafor described the situation as very worrisome, while decrying the ripple effects of erosion menace and bad road on the community.

Meanwhile, the Senator representing Anambra Central zone, Chief Victor Umeh, after visiting the erosion sites recently, tabled the matter at plenary in the Senate under matters of urgent national importance.

Lamenting the plight of people of the South East, Umeh said, “There is no guarantee that the other lane on the Onitsha-Owerri road will survive the pressure. Many factories and houses are already collapsing and people working in those companies will suddenly lose their jobs unless emergency work is done to the erosion scourge in the area.

“This is a major gateway to the Eastern part of Nigeria. The second Niger Bridge is not far from here and all the vehicles coming from the Western part of the country into the South-East and South-South states pass through this road. This is why urgent action is needed.

“Almost every community in the state is threatened by erosion. The South-East is small in size and, regrettably, we are losing even

FRSC Clears Path for Smooth Travel on Enugu-Onitsha Highway this Yuletide

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 21, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Ahead of the festive period, MTN Nigeria is partnering the Federal Road Safety Corps to temporarily open the Amawbia, Anambra State sections of the partially completed Enugu-Onitsha Dual Carriage Way.

Leading Reporters gathered that MTN is the financier of the dual carriageway that connects Anambra and other South-East states.

The Coordinator, MTN Community Liaison Initiative, Dr Reginald Facah, during a press conference in Amawbia, near Awka, Anambra State, said the road was opened to ease traffic flow for South-East commuters travelling during the Yuletide.

Facah noted that there has been a high influx of traffic along the Onitsha carriageway resulting in gridlock because of the Yuletide season, adding that the essence of opening the road is to decongest the traffic to make travelling seamless for road users.

He said, “Today, we are gathered to temporarily open the partially completed sections of the Enugu-Onitsha Dual Carriage Way, not because the entire project is ready, but because December and Christmas have seen unimaginable suffering on the parts of commuters and drivers on this same road.

“However, with today’s opening of the Amawbia section and the opening of Amawbia flyover, an untrammeled driving experience is once again here for human and vehicular traffic which are usually heat during this period.”

On his part, the Senior Manager Sales, MTN, Emmanuel Okereke, said the organisation is excited to partner with the Federal Government on a road infrastructure tax credit scheme to complete the rehabilitation of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

Okereke said, “This road does not only connect Enugu and Anambra states; it is a gateway to the rest of the country and Africa. Our commitment is to deliver an expressway that will be the pride of the South-East people and Nigerians in general.”

In his remarks, Sector Commander FRSC, Anambra State, Adeoye Irelewuyi, said, “At festive periods like this, this section of the road always experienced very serious traffic jam at the slightest obstruction to traffic flow usually causes a pile-up in both directions.

“It is therefore with great joy and relief that the Anambra State Command of the FRSC is marking this occasion of the temporary opening of this section.

“We surely believe that it will ease the traffic jam usually experienced at the Amawbia flyover and underpass, as well as reduce road traffic crashes on the stretch.

The Sector Commander appealed to the people of the state and indeed all road users travelling during and after this Yuletide period to always exercise patience.

Earlier, the Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Patricia Igwebuike, lauded MTN for their timely intervention and encouraged road users to use the road with caution, especially the Yuletide.

Chibok town, Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, is in the news again following a fierce attack by Boko Haram insurgents, on Tuesday evening, killing two persons and injuring scores.

Chibok was for the first time in the global news in April 2014, when the insurgents stormed the Government Girls Secondary School there and abducted over 300 students.

The fierce Tuesday attack took place, according to locals, around 7 pm, when the insurgents suddenly pounced on the community shooting rampantly, sending the residents into a stampede.

Residents, according to a local, Moses Adamu, took to their heels in all directions into the surrounding bushes, as the insurgents, going on a shooting spree, burnt down homes and looted food items.

Adamu said the majority of the fleeing residents passed the night in the bushes while some might have found refuge in neighbouring communities.

Reps Move To Adopt Chinese Yuan As Official Foreign Exchange Currency

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 20, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The House of Representatives at plenary moved to adopt the 2018 policy that will recognise the Chinese Yuan as an official foreign currency for conducting business transactions in Nigeria to curb the continuous depreciation of the naira.

The House also mandated its committees on Banking Regulations, Banking, and Other Ancillary Institutions to liaise with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to explore the appropriate mechanisms, policies, and partnerships required for giving effect to the policy.

Adopting a motion sponsored by Hon. Jafaru Leko, the house said considering the volume of trade between Nigeria and China, the Chinese currency should serve as an official foreign exchange reserve currency alongside other major international currencies.

According to him, the International Monetary Fund proposed diversification of foreign exchange reserves for central banks of developing countries, including Nigeria.

Hon. Leko said the global economic landscape is evolving and international trade dynamics are shifting, with China assuming a leading role in global trade.

He said the People’s Republic of China has a stable and globally recognized currency, the Chinese Yuan (CNY), which is gaining recognition in international trade.

He said adopting the Chinese Yuan as an additional foreign exchange reserve currency might mitigate the adverse effects of Naira depreciation, reduce the risks associated with exchange rate fluctuations, and enhance Nigeria’s economic stability.

He argued that doing so would enhance Nigeria’s trade and economic ties with China, a crucial trading partner.

Hon. Julius Ihonvbare, the House Leader informed the house that the use of the Yuan was adopted as a policy by the government after the collapse of the price of crude oil in the international market, pointing out that what should be done is to implement the policy.

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Interior, Hon. Ahmed Abdullahi, has pledged the Committee’s support to boosting the country’s internal security, through robust legislation and oversight mechanisms.

Hon. Aliyu Abdullahi gave the assurance on Wednesday at the National Assembly, during the Committee’s Inaugural Meeting.

The House’s Interior Committee, established by Order 20(B) Rule 63 of the House’s Standing Orders, is mandated to oversee certain Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, in accordance with Section 62 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as altered).

According to Abdullahi, the committee, composed of accomplished professionals and public servants, is well poised to fulfil its mandate, thanks to the trust bestowed upon us by our esteemed Speaker, Hon. Tajudeen Abass.

Hon. Abdullahi explained that the focus of their Committee lies in addressing the nation’s security challenges, with oversight responsibilities covering the Ministry of Interior, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS), and the Federal Fire Service.

He said: “To enhance internal security, we pledge unwavering legislative support, emphasising the deployment of technology and robust hardware.

“Our oversight activities will be comprehensive, ensuring value for allocated resources to the MDAs. Priority will be given to the welfare and provision of adequate equipment for our personnel, enabling swift responses to distress calls”.

Hon. Aliyu Abdullahi called on his colleagues to contribute their ideas towards shaping the Committee’s future activities, in line with the mandate of the 10th House of Representatives and the Federal Government’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda.

“Let us collectively commit to positively contributing to the Committee’s activities, justifying the confidence placed in us by the entire House.

Concluding, he expressed gratitude to the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Principal Officers of the 10th House of Representatives for entrusting us with this responsibility.

“We anticipate tapping into your wealth of experience.”
