Delta Senator Takes Aim Against Violence: New Bill Targets Firearms and Self-Defense

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 5, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Ned Nwoko has said civilians in Nigeria should be allowed to bear arms in self-defence in the wave of endless attacks by bandits and terrorists across the country.

He said the endless massacre of innocent and vulnerable persons encouraged him to introduce a bill to amend the existing law on civilian ownership of firearms purposely for defending themselves in time of unprovoked attack by criminal elements.

Speaking on Friday in Abuja, the lawmaker expressed optimism that the bill will sail through when Senators resume legislative business after a new year break.

He said massacre, abduction and killing of vulnerable persons have not abated despite the government’s effort at tackling insecurity, pointing out that the bill to own and bear weapons will empower civilians against criminals.

He described it as a ‘disturbing moment,’ the violent attacks in some Plateau communities leading to the killing of over 200 people with several others injured on the eve of Christmas by terrorists.

Nwoko said: “Considering these dire circumstances, there’s a growing call for responsible firearm ownership as a means of self-defence.”

Speaking on the stage of the bill, he said, the bill has been laid and will be read for the first time, when Senators resume from new year recess, insisting that it’s a pressing issue that must be given due attention.

“I am pleased that the topic has gained national significance, sparking diverse opinions and discussions that predominantly fall into two camps – one in opposition and the other in support.

“It’s evident that the existing security measures have not been sufficient in safeguarding our communities. Allowing law-abiding citizens to possess firearms could potentially provide a sense of security and a means to protect themselves and their families from immediate threats.”

He emphasized that the move to allow civilians to bear firearms comes with responsibility and stringent regulations with comprehensive training on how to use them.

JSM clarifies restructuring plans in Nigeria, assures continued operations

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 4, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing Limited (“JSM”) located in Awa, Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state, has clarified that it has not ended its operations in Nigeria.

JSM, which was inaugurated on September 23rd, 2017, by the former Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has become the market leader with its top-quality syringes in the country, in addition to creating  employment opportunities for Akwa Ibom people and other Nigerians.

However, despite the huge sum invested in the syringe factory, the management staff have been unable to meet up with its expected target, hence, the decision of the investors to restructure and reorganise the management team and the entire structures of the production lines for better profitability and sustainability.

A statement by JSM investors through the Managing Director of VKS Group of Companies, Mr. Onur Kumral,  dismissed the reports that JSM was ending its operations in the country completely.

He explained that contrary to reports, the company is only undergoing a restructuring phase, which will only make the company experience a brief break within this period.

Kumral noted that the reorganisation of JSM is a decision of the investors, following the inability of the management to meet up with its expected targets for several years, stressing that the shake-up only affects management staff and the entire structures of the production line, which is geared towards better productivity of the company.

He assured that the company will return to full operations soon.

The statement reads in part: “JSM is simply undertaking temporary measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of its operations. Restructuring is not new in any given business environment and sometimes you undertake reviews with sustainability in mind.

“When you set up a multimillion-dollar factory such as JSM, it is important to take a critical review of its operations and that of the management staff. JSM is a for-profit business and when expected targets are not met year after year, a shake-up is inevitable,  which is what we have decided to do.

“We want to assure our esteemed customers that there is no need to panic. We are still in business as Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing Limited and we are poised to keep to our commitment to remain as the producer of the highest quality syringes in Nigeria.

“We call on the general public and our esteemed customers to disregard insinuations in certain media outlets reporting a total shut down of JSM operations in Nigeria, we remain in business, and we will come back stronger than before.”

US Imam Shot Outside New Jersey Mosque Dies

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 4, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

An imam who was shot Wednesday outside a mosque in New Jersey has died, the US state’s attorney general said, adding that the killing did not initially appear to be driven by “bias” or domestic terrorism.

Hassan Sharif was shot multiple times near a mosque in Newark, just west of New York, before being taken to hospital where he later died, New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin said.

“We do not yet know the motivation for this crime (but) the evidence collected thus far does not indicate that this was an act motivated by bias, or an act of domestic terrorism,” said Platkin.

He added that “in light of global events, and with a rise in bias that many communities are experiencing across our state — particularly the Muslim community — there are many in New Jersey right now who are feeling a heightened sense of fear.”

The state is home to 300,000 Muslim Americans, he said.

Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, there has been an increase in Islamophobic and anti-Semitic attacks across the United States.

The Essex County prosecutor, Ted Stephens, confirmed Sharif was shot more than once, and that “it does not appear the imam was the victim of a bias crime or that this is related to terrorism.”

“We are dedicated to bringing justice for the imam’s family,” said Stephens, who called it a “dastardly crime.”

The United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) earlier confirmed that Sharif had worked as a security screener at Newark airport since 2016.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of his passing and send our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues,” said Lisa Farbstein, a TSA spokeswoman.

Images published by the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) showed police vehicles deployed outside the Masjid Muhammad-Newark, a two-story yellow and green complex.

In a statement, CAIR described Sharif as “a beacon of leadership and excellence.”

“As always, and irrespective of this specific incident, we advise all mosques to keep their doors open but remain cautious especially given the recent spike in anti-Muslim bigotry,” the organization said.

EFCC Assumes Control of NSIPA Abuja Premises, Detains CEO and Employees

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 3, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Men of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), Tuesday flooded the Maitama office of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, (NSIPA), shortly after reports of the suspension of the Chief Executive Officer, (CEO), and National Coordinator, NSIPA, Halima Shehu on allege financial malfeasance.

The Guardian observed a heavy presence of EFCC officials dressed in black suits, red ties, and red outfits with the EFCC insignia positioned outside and inside the office.

Access to the office located at Taraba Close, off Limpopo Street, Maitama, was also restricted as no one was allowed in or out of the building.

In what appears to be a mild phase-off between suspected Department of State Services, (DSS), officials, the EFCC personnel later took over the compound while Shehu alongside her Key officers, including media aides were not allowed to leave their offices.

LeadingReporters gathered that after hours of being kept locked in the office, observed that the EFCC personnel left followed shortly by Shehu’s convoy.

A source in the agency explained that the NSIPA national coordinator will issue a statement as soon as the situation is clear and that she is not allowed to comment on the development at the moment.

Meanwhile, the alleged suspension has led to the cancellation of an event the agency was set to hold Tuesday morning in Karu where she was to distribute cash grants and starter packs to vulnerable groups and also reach out to some victims of organ trade black market, in Abuja.

Shehu reportedly rushed to the Presidential villa to confirm the authenticity of the news since she was yet to be serve any letter at the time, leaving journalists waiting at the venue.

News of Shehu’s suspension filtered Tuesday morning in the media claiming that President Bola Tinubu has suspended her and has appointed the Renewed Hope Job Creation Programme, (RHJCP), formerly, N-Power boss, Dr. Akindele Egbuwale as the acting NSIPA national coordinator pending outcome of investigations.
