Benue sliding into anarchy under Alia – PDP

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 29, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Benue, says the state is sliding into anarchy under the current dispensation of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The party in a statement by its spokesperson, Bemgba Iortyom condemned the indefinite suspension of Kwande LGA Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Terdoo Kenti, and other members of his Executive Committee.

He described the act as an aberration which exposes the disdain for democratic norms and leadership incompetence of Governor Hyacinth Alia under whose watch such absurdity is unraveling.

Mr Iortyom said the obnoxious act which has been appropriately dismissed by the state chapter of the APC is of no consequence.

He said the suspension of Mr Kenti is part of the dictatorial tendency of Alia to subvert constitutional order in the state.

Mr Iortyom said, “PDP observes that while the bizarre suspension order by Revd. Fr. Hule in Kwande is shocking, it apes precisely the lawless style of his master, the governor, in Makurdi, and the party regrets that this serves to fuel the growing impression that Catholic priests by their command and authoritarian orientation are unsuitable to political leadership under our liberal democratic setting”.

Iconic Nigerian Business Leader and Ex-ICAN President, Emmanuel Ijewere, Passes Away

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 29, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Lagos, Nigeria – In a somber announcement on Friday, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) confirmed the demise of Emmanuel Ijewere, a distinguished figure who had served as the 32nd president of the institute from 1996 to 1997. The news was verified by Dare Muyiwa, the senior manager of the corporate communications directorate of ICAN.

“Yes, he is late,” Muyiwa reportedly informed news correspondents , shedding light on the passing of Ijewere after a prolonged battle with a terminal illness.

Emmanuel Ijewere, born in 1946, was a luminary in the Nigerian business landscape, displaying expertise in banking, finance, and agriculture. His contributions extended beyond ICAN, as he held significant roles in prestigious organizations such as the Institute of Directors (IOD) and the Nigerian Red Cross.

Commencing his accounting career in 1965 at Coopers & Lybrand, Ijewere later founded Ijewere & Co., a chartered accountancy firm in Nigeria, in 1979. The firm earned a stellar reputation for its tax advisory services, solidifying its place among the country’s most esteemed indigenous accounting companies.

As a businessman, Ijewere chaired and directed several companies, including Best Foods Group, Emson, Nigeria Agribusiness Group, Drum Resources Nigeria Limited, Apel Capital & Trust Limited, Countrywide Direct Mortgage Company, Kerildbert Holdings, Computer Warehouse Group (CWG), Gemini Pharmaceuticals, among others.

On the national stage, he was a pioneer chairman of the Agriculture and Food Security Commission and served as a director on the defunct modified value-added tax committee in 1993. Emmanuel Ijewere’s influence reached beyond borders, with memberships in the National Economic Forum (NEF), the International Investment Council (HIIC), and the Agricultural Transformation Implementation Council (ATIC) under the chairmanship of ex-President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Notably, he played a vital role as the president of the Nigeria Agribusiness Group (NAGB), the umbrella organization for Nigerian agriculture, until his passing.

Emmanuel Ijewere’s commitment to the agricultural sector was evident through his role as a resource person for the transition committee of former President Muhammadu Buhari, providing insights into the agricultural landscape of the nation.

His demise marks the end of an era for the Nigerian business community, as Emmanuel Ijewere’s multifaceted contributions and leadership will be remembered and celebrated by those whose lives he touched

Outrage sparks as 54-year-old man weds four-year-old girl: Advocates demand justice

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 29, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A child rights advocacy group in Bayelsa, DO Foundation, on Thursday, kicked against the December 26, traditional marriage between a four-year-old and a 54-year-old man at Akeddei community in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state.

The foundation, in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Yenagoa, described the marriage as illegal, criminal, and a child marriage which is against the constitution and the Child Rights Act.

The statement was signed by the foundation’s chairperson, Mr Elvis Mannie.

The foundation condemned child marriage as horrendous, despicable, and a criminal activity

According to the civil society group, the act is capable of retarding the giant strides made by the government and people of Bayelsa in the area of protection of child rights.

The foundation noted that the Child’s Right Law was domesticated in the state in 2016 and is still in force in Bayelsa.

”This law criminalises child marriages and child betrothals prescribing various terms of imprisonment and heavy fines,” the foundation noted.

The foundation called on the state government, the Gender Response Initiative Team, and all stakeholders in the gender response system to immediately swing into action to respond appropriately.

It urged the security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident, with a view to the protection of the child from sexual exploitation.

The group also demanded the arrest and prosecution of all persons found culpable in this despicable act.

The foundation has launched an investigation into the development aimed at saving the child from the obnoxious situation.

Leading Reporters learnt that the marriage between the four-year-old ‘bride’ and the 54-year-old man, simply identified as Elder Akpos, was at the instance of the girl’s parents.

A source said, ”The little bride said if she was not allowed to marry her husband, she would have no other business in Akeddei community, and that she was going to die peacefully and go her way.

“In order to avoid losing the girl to death, the people of Akeddei decided to organise a glamorous wedding ceremony to mark the union.”

Benue: Gov Alia clears air on reported rift with SGF Akume

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 27, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has refuted the rumoured rift with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume.

Alia described Akume as a national pride and the father of Benue State.

He spoke at a symposium in Makurdi, the Benue State capital to mark his birthday.

According to Alia: “I want to unambiguously debunk the circulating rumours of discord between the SGF and myself. These speculations exist solely in the imaginative realm of opportunists, instigators of turmoil, and merchants of mischief who thrive on chaos. The said fracas is only a figment of the imagination crafted by those who seek to profit from the crisis.

“For pockets of disenchanted members of our party here in the state, we are already in talks to address various areas of discontent. However, while we try to do so, we shall ensure that the will of the masses who voted us into office, prevails.

“I therefore enjoin each and every one of us to dismiss such baseless notions and focus on the shared commitment to truth, unity, and progress that defines our collective journey.”
