Maiduguri Flood: United Nations Warn Against Cholera Outbreak in IDP Camps

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 11, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The United Nations has issued a warning over a potential cholera outbreak in Internally Displaced Person (IDP) camps in Maiduguri, Borno State, following recent flooding in the area.

The UN is concerned that the floodwaters may contaminate water sources, leading to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, in the already vulnerable IDP camps.

A report released by the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said the immediate needs are food, protection, shelter and clean water, adding that some water sources are contaminated, and could lead to outbreaks of diseases such as Cholera.

It wrote, “The immediate needs are food, shelter and clean water, with some water sources contaminated. Protection remains a major concern, especially among unaccompanied and separated children, older persons and people living with disabilities.

Intermediate needs include non-food items and interventions to prevent the outbreak of diseases such as cholera in congested sites. The floods have also affected nutrition stabilization centres treating severely malnourished children in MMC and Jere LGAs.

“Beyond MMC and Jere LGAs in Borno State, the Dalwa community in Damboa LGA is also affected, with Bama and Gwoza LGAs similarly reporting flooding. Before the recent flash floods, almost 123,000 people in Borno State were affected by floods and windstorms since August. The floods have destroyed critical infrastructure and heightened the risk of disease outbreaks especially in overcrowded IDP camps.

“Edo Will Burn if Asue is Not Declared Governor” – NLC Chairman

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 11, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Edo State chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Odion Olaye, has declared that Edo state will born if the People’s Democratic Party Governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo is not declared winner ahead of the September 21 governorship election in the state.

In a video circulating online, Olaye threatened that Edo State would face dire consequences if his preferred candidate is not declared the winner.

While campaigning for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, in Egor, Benin City, Olaye expressed confidence in his candidate’s victory. He predicted that the PDP would win Egor City by a landslide, securing 80% of the votes.

Olaye also stated that if the electoral body fails to declare Asue Ighodalo the winner, Edo State would erupt into chaos. “If they refuse to do that, Edo state will burn,” he threatened in the video.

Olaye’s incendiary statement has sparked concern, as it appears to incite violence and unrest if the election outcome does not favor his preferred candidate.

His words have been met with widespread criticism, with many calling for him to retract his statement and promote peaceful electoral processes.

Edo2024: Again, Court Affirms Akpata As LP’s Governorship Candidate

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 11, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed an appeal filed by Kenneth Imansuangbon, seeking to disqualify Olumide Akpata as the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the September 21 election in Edo State.

In the lead judgment delivered by Justice Okon Abang, the appellate court held that Imansuangbon failed to explore the Labour Party’s internal conflict resolution mechanism before taking the matter to court.

The court also ruled that Imansuangbon’s case was premature and couldn’t be entertained because the conditions precedent had not been met.

Furthermore, the unanimous judgment of the three-man panel of justices stated that Imansuangbon failed to tender the disputed results of the February 23 primary election, which he claimed to have won.

This development comes after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court Abuja dismissed a similar suit in June, seeking to void Akpata’s nomination as the Labour Party’s candidate in the September 21 election.

Controversial Nigerian musician, Portable, has been entangled in a fresh scandal after he was caught on camera slapping a pastor for preaching at his bar.

The shocking incident was captured on Instagram Live, allowing viewers to witness the altercation unfold in real-time.

According to reports, the pastor had visited Portable’s bar to spread the word of God, but the musician took exception to the preacher’s presence, deeming it a disruption to his business. This initiative is led by Finance Minister Wale Edun and is part of the One Million Homes Presidential Initiative.

The fund, called the Ministry of Finance Incorporated Real Estate Investment Fund, will provide low-cost mortgage options, particularly for pension account holders, enabling a broader segment of the population to own homes.

Flooding: VP Shettima To Visit Borno

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 10, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Bola Tinubu has instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima to embark on an urgent visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, following the severe flooding that has ravaged the city. This directive is aimed at evaluating the situation, offering assistance, and overseeing relief efforts for those impacted by the disaster.

The visit was made known by the Vice President while speaking on Tuesday at the 17th Annual Banking and Finance Conference (CIBN), which was centred around the theme “Accelerated Economic Growth and Development: Current Status and Future Directions.”

Shettima said, based on the consent of the President, he would travel to Maiduguri immediately after leaving the meeting as the whole city has been overtaken by flood.

After this meeting with the consent of the President, I will rush to Maiduguri. The whole city has been overtaken by flood.

“It is not peculiar to one part of the country. We are facing this challenges right from Bayelsa to Sokoto.

“Be rest assured that the President has the nation at heart and will do whatever it takes to salvage the state of affairs,”

“I want to use this forum to commiserate with the people of our great nation over the flood disasters we are recording all across the length and breath of this nation,” Shettima said.

Recall that several parts of Maiduguri have witnessed massive flooding, which has been linked to the overflowing of Alau Dam.

Many residents have been sacked from their residences due to the catastrophic impact of the flood, affecting various areas of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

Several video clips on social media show how residents were moving away from their different locations, seeking where to stay until the flooding event subsides.

In response to the situation, the Borno State government previously mandated the closure of schools amid concerns that the flooding could intensify within the next 48 hours.

Reports revealed that the flooding, which commenced a week ago, reached its most critical point during the early hours of Tuesday.

Governor Zulum Orders Evacuation As Flood Submerges Maiduguri

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 10, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Excess water from the failed Alau Dam in Borno State has overflowed into parts of Maiduguri, the state capital in North-East Nigeria, causing widespread flooding.

According to eyewitnesses, the worst-hit areas include Bulabulin Ward, Monday Market, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate on Bama Road, where floodwaters have inundated homes and businesses.

Residents of Maiduguri and Jere are on high alert as the flood continues to spread, submerging many properties and displacing families. The flooding is attributed to the alleged partial breakdown of Alau Dam, which has been filled to capacity for the past week.

In response to the crisis, Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Ta, has issued a statement urging immediate evacuation of affected areas to prevent further loss of life and property.

The commissioner’s call for evacuation comes as the floodwaters continue to rise, threatening to engulf more parts of the city and surrounding areas, leaving residents in a state of panic and uncertainty..

He said, “Due to the unusually high volume of water this year, the Borno State Government is urging the residents living along the river bank to take immediate action to protect themselves and their properties”.

Tar also urged the residents to follow evacuation routes to ensure safe passage.

The last time the dam had a similar challenge was in 1994, when almost half of the town was flooded, killing many people.
