“Edo election is a do or die affair” Obaseki insists

by Folarin Kehinde September 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State says he does not regret saying that the September 21 Edo governorship election is a do-or-die affair.

LEADING REPORTERS recalls that the governor had recently made the statement, which has made him come under heavy criticism, especially from members of the opposition party a few days ago.

Obaseki, while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, maintained that the election is a do-or-die affair because the Edo people will be doomed if the All Progressives Congress, APC takes over the state.

According to him, the opposition party has perfected plans to rig the election in their favour on Saturday, warning that the state’s people would resist them.

Obaseki also expressed his lack of confidence in the police before the election, accusing them of bias.

“It’s a do-or-die affair because if they do, we die, the level of impunity, the level of recklessness we see in the opposition party if they take over Edo state, is finished – that is the end.

“If you see the evidence of what they have done, the blatant way they have gone about it. It is like they forget that the police are being funded by taxpayers’ money, Nigerians taxpayers’ money. They should just be a bit more professional and unbiased,” he said.

NCC Eyes 6GHz Spectrum to enhance connectivity across Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde September 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Communications Commission is set to unlock the 6GHz frequency band for unlicensed Wi-Fi use, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s push to enhance connectivity across the country.

By opening this spectrum, the commission says it is empowering faster, more reliable wireless internet access, paving the way for innovations in smart technologies, improved digital experiences, and bridging the digital divide.

The commission stated that the strategic move promises to boost network capacity, lower latency, and fuel Nigeria’s digital economy, fostering greater internet access for businesses, homes, and public spaces across the country.

Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida while speaking at the Annual Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies in Lagos, highlighted the growing strain on current Wi-Fi frequencies due to rising demand
emphasizing that the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands, commonly used for Wi-Fi 5, are becoming overwhelmed.

Maida represented by represented by Engr. Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner of Technical Services, stated that operators are pushing for public-private partnerships (PPPs) to capitalize on this moment, aiming to expand their networks into underserved and vulnerable regions. They see it as an opportunity to bridge gaps in connectivity and provide crucial services where they’re most needed.

He noted that as internet usage surges, the need for additional frequency bands to ease the burden on existing ones is becoming increasingly urgent, emphasizing the importance of exploring new spectrum options for future connectivity needs.

Nigeria is set to join a growing number of countries leveraging the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 technology, according to Maida. She highlighted that the 6GHz band, spanning from 5925 MHz to 7125 MHz, will unlock a vast new spectrum.

This expansion is crucial for accommodating the increasing demand for high-speed internet and advanced applications, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s digital evolution.

Civil servants lament tough process accessing FG’s N40,000 50kg rice

by Folarin Kehinde September 19, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A cross-section of civil servants at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday appealed to the President Bola Tinubu administration to create more platforms to ease the collection of its subsidised rice for workers.

The 50kg bags of rice are being sold at a flat rate of N40,000 each in furtherance of the Federal Government’s intervention to ameliorate the prevailing food crises in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview, the workers said that the process of accessing the product had become cumbersome due to inadequate distribution points owing to the huge number of people turning out to benefit from the scheme.

One of them, Alex Luke, stated that the special intervention by the Federal Government was a welcome development as it’s aimed at easing the burden on Nigerians.

Mr Luke said that he was number 500 on the registration list as of Thursday morning and it took him two days to be able to write down his name on the lists.

He said, “The challenge here is that the registration and the collection points are not enough, compared to the number of workers here at the Secretariat and those who are coming from other government establishments.

“It would be brilliant if the organisers could create other platforms or different points for other MDAs to get the rice. I think it will make the process organised and coordinated.”

Also speaking, another civil servant, Eunice Linus, described the special intervention of providing rice at the rate of N40, 000 per bag as a good omen for the people as many of them would love to have them.

She, however, said it was unfortunate that the process of accessing the product “has become a big challenge as it is wasting the time workers are supposed to be using to work in their offices.”

She noted, “When I got to the office this morning, I went straight to this place to write my name, and I saw many people there and it has been like that since we started the scheme.

“You know, because rice is expensive at the market, workers in particular would not want to miss the opportunity to buy a bag at N40,000 here. But the process is time-wasting. I believe there is an easier way to organise this than this chaotic process.”

In her contribution, Aisha Umaru, who lauded the Federal Government for the initiative, suggested that admin officers from different ministries should be assigned to write the names of interested workers and submit the lists at points designated for the distribution or sale of the product.

She said, “I think it is a welcome idea, but we have not been finding it easy even to write our names, let alone collect the bags of rice. As you can see, the place is crowded, and it will get worse as more people are still coming to work. It will be very easy if different MDAs can assign officers from their offices to write the names of people and take them to collection points.”

On her part, Patience Yakubu, said the scheme might end up making many people commit their money only to end up not getting the products.

She stated, “You can imagine all of us that are working at the Federal Secretariat coming here and people from other places coming to queue up at the Head of Service for the collection of the rice.

“When would people finish writing their names and go back to work? It means we would use the whole day for this process which we are not even sure will succeed at the end of the day. There is a more organised way of making this a success if the government means well for us.”
