Edo election:”I hope you have learnt your lesson now” Philip shaibu taunts Obaseki

by Folarin Kehinde September 23, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu says the outcome of the just concluded governorship election in the state justified his claims that the incumbent Governor, Goodwin Obaseki was unpopular.

Shaibu, who spoke on Monday during a program on Arise TV, claimed that Obaseki has never won any election by himself, stressing that the governor was always helped to victory.

LEADING REPORTERS reports that the Deputy governor, who fell out with his boss following his ambition to contest for the 2024 gubernatorial election supported the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC on Sunday declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of APC winner of the Saturday election.

Okpebholo garnered 291,667 votes to defeat Obaseki’s anointed candidate, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who also got 247,274 votes.

Reacting to the election, Shaibu said he feels “vindicated”, stating that Obaseki ought to have learnt his lessons from the events.

He urged the governor to apologize to the people of the state, particularly those he kicked out of his government.

Shaibu said “I thank God for it. I am water and I don’t have an enemy. Those who unfortunately decided that I am their enemy, I have always prayed for them to live long and see how God’s miracles continue to work in my life.

“I am a team player and somebody that likes to do my work the way it is and if I make a mistake, it is a human mistake and not out of envy or wickedness.

Yesterday, I was so excited and I am happy that I’m counted among the numbers that helped the APC to regain the seat.

“I have also been able to cancel that negative impression that Shaibu does not win his ward. It is a lie because I have never lost my ward or unit. The highest votes came from my unit.

“Even the governor could not win his Local Government. I won, I won my unit, which is number one now, and I won my ward and LG which is also number one. I took first from unit to LG.

“Where are the governor’s results? He has never won, we only assist him but unfortunately, he got the power and started kicking us out.

“It is very unfortunate and I hope he learns his lessons. What is less for him now is to go back and apologize to the people of Edo State and there are a lot of them that he needs to apologize to”.

Fresh electricity tariff hike looms as Nigeria’s monthly power subsidy hits N181.63bn

by Folarin Kehinde September 23, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Another electricity tariff hike may be introduced in October 2024 by the Nigerian Government as the country’s monthly power subsidy rose to N181,63 billion in September.

This comes as the electricity subsidy by the Federal Government rose to N181,63 billion in September from N102.30 billion in May.

In the last three months, the government paid N163.87 billion in July, N173.88bn in August, and N181.63bn in September 2024.

This comes after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission announced the removal of subsidies in areas categorized as Band A feeders on April 3, 2024.

NERC had revealed that the monthly electricity subsidy at that time stood at N140.7 billion.

Consequently, NERC approved an electricity tariff hike for electricity consumers enjoying at least 20 hours of electricity daily, raising their tariff to N225 per kilowatt-hour.

However, the decision generated serious outcries among Nigerians, including labour unions, educational and health institutions, whose electricity bills tripled following the removal of the subsidy.

In May when the subsidy figure dropped to N102.30 billion, the government slashed the Band A tariff to N206.80/kWh.

NERC said the reason for the reduction was due to a fall in the exchange rate of the Dollar to the Naira.

However, the tariff was jerked to N209/kWh in early July as the subsidy rose again to N158 billion in June.

Accordingly, in the period under review, the NERC put the dollar exchange rate at N1,494.1 in July; 1,564.3 in August; and N1601.5 in September.

As of September, the NERC maintains the benchmark gas-to-power price of $2.42/Million British Thermal Units based on the established benchmark price of gas-to-power by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority in line with Section 167 of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021.

This indicates the rising cost of power generation in Nigeria.

The development coupled with the country’s inflation rate which stood at 32.15 percent in August 2024 had fueled speculations that there may be another tariff increase in the October Multi-Year Tariff Order unless the cost of power generation drops.

We are not comfortable with the little shenanigans that is going on particularly from the APC guys. This is a single state election and INEC has all the time to prepare, so there was no need for the delay.

“There are rumours that they are trying to undermine the election process. Many of them have been caught with ballot papers, PVC’s.

“The worst is that they go round trying to buy votes. They buy votes for N15,000 to N20,000. They are trying everything to subvert the process.”

He noted that the Nigerian military has take charge and shown that they can protect the people.

He said are not worried about the election because they have spent 10 months talking to people, telling them what we will do for them if they elect us.

“The people believed us and have accepted us all over the state. I don’t know the magic anybody will perform. The kind of numbers I am hearing from Edo North, Edo Central, Edo South, overwhelms me. You know in Nigeria, funny things happen. I don’t know the magic anybody wants to perform.

“I believe INEC will deliver a free and fair election until they prove otherwise. We will win hands down in this election.

“We are not happy about a few ongoing in some places but we will remain confident. One of our supporters was arrested at Uromi by some people with security outfit,” he said.

Edo election: Only poor network ‘ll hinder electronic transmission of results – REC Onuoah

by Folarin Kehinde September 21, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The INEC’s resident electoral commissioner (REC) in Edo, Anugbum Onuoha has revealed that ongoing governorship election results will be transmitted electronically, saying only a poor network can stop the electronic transmission of results.

Onuoha made this known in an interview with Arise Television on Saturday, where he also disclosed that INEC has implemented contingency plans of 660 BVAS as a backup.

“You know that we have 4,519 pulling units across the 18 local governments, and so far we have deployed 4,622 BVAS to the various local governments. And we also have a backup of 660 BVAS,” he said.

“We have trained the operators for the BVAS. They are set. BVAS is to accredit the voters, to know the total number of voters that will vote at that level, that pulling unit.

“After that, then the voters will now start voting. At the end of the day, they will count the results, and it will be uploaded to our IReV.

“That is the state we are now. To be rest assured that we’ll conduct an election that we can call our own.
“I just want you to confirm. So are you saying that this election is going to be, the results will all be transmitted electronically? Is that what you’re saying? Yes. Thank you.

“Yes, unless there is no network in that place. If not, it will. We will transmit it.”
