JUST IN: Hoodlums set National Open University Imo Centre on Fire

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A destructive arson attack has struck the National Open University (NOUN) centre in Ezeoke Nsu, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, just two days after rumours circulated that the facility might be converted into an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) centre.

The unknown assailants responsible for the fire also targeted the home of former Okigwe North Senator, Frank Ibezim.

The attack, which occurred around 9 p.m. on Monday, has sent shockwaves through the community, causing residents to flee for safety.

Reacting to the incident on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, strongly condemned the attack which he described as senseless.

“The senseless and unwarranted attack, which occurred on September 30, 2024, at about 2100hrs, also targeted the residence of Senator Frank Ibezim, a former senator representing Okigwe North.

“This unfortunate incident reflects a disturbing trend of violence that undermines the safety and security of our communities,” CP Danjuma stated.

He added: “The Command stands firmly against such acts and will take all necessary measures in synergy with other security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

Danjuma described the incident as a “senseless and unwarranted arson” and assured that the police will leave no stone unturned in investigating the attack.

“We will uphold the rule of law and ensure justice is served,” he emphasized. “No individual involved in this attack will escape the full legal consequences.”

According to him, the Command’s Tactical Unit has been deployed to identify and apprehend those responsible, adding that a thorough investigation is underway, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation.

Danjuma urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and making inciting statements that could destabilize the peace in Imo State.

“I warn that anyone found guilty of perpetuating false information will face strict consequences,” he cautioned. “Let us work together to maintain peace and order in our communities.”

Emirates return to Nigeria two years after

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

After two years of pulling out of Nigeria, the Emirates Airlines flight has returned to the country.

The airline’s aircraft landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Tuesday.

Emirate stopped coming to Nigeria after its revenues totalled $85m in August 2022 was blocked by the Nigerian government over lack of forex.

At the time of filing this report, the funds have successfully been repatriated.

Following several diplomatic meetings between the Nigerian and the United Arab Emirates governments, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, also led a high-level Nigerian delegation to UAE on Friday to finalise negotiations ahead of the resumption of the airline’s operations in Nigeria.

The meeting also settled a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement between both nations to ensure stronger and mutually beneficial aviation ties.

PUNCH Online correspondent who visited the airport on Tuesday, saw arriving passengers being processed at the old terminal of MMIA.

Arriving passengers are currently using the old terminal while departing passengers will be processed at the new terminal.

This medium gathered that although scanty passengers flew the airline, passengers commended the airline services.

Leading reporters earlier reported that the airline had announced its resumption to Nigeria from October 1, 2024.

The relaunch flight with the number EK 783 was welcomed by a water cannon salute.

Commenting on the development, President of the Association of Foreign Airlines and Representatives in Nigeria, Kingsley Nwokoma, expressed joy with the return of the airline saying the development will be a win-win for both Nigerian and the UAE.

“We are happy with their return and we believe that with the return of their operations now, Air Peace too will be able to fly to the UAE because I understand they stopped because of the UAE visa ban on Nigerians.

“The more, the merrier and with this, they have also given more options to the flying public, Emirate is welcome back,” Nwokoma stated.

We’re fully ready for war– Iran to Israel

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Iran has said that it was fully ready for whatever Israel may come up with.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, gave the order to launch missiles against Israel.

Daily post reported that Iran launched over 180 ballistic missiles into Israel early Tuesday.

The Israeli military said it has received no reports of injuries from the Iranian missile attack.

The Israeli military spokesperson, Rear Adm Daniel Hagari, said the country’s air defenses intercepted many of the incoming missiles, though some landed in central and southern Israel.

However, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran “is fully ready for any retaliation”.

Meanwhile, the Iranian mission to the United Nations has defended the country’s missile launches against Israel, calling it a response to “terrorist acts” by Israel.

“I’m still in politics, I’d be back 2027 – El-Rufai

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has vehemently denied allegations of corruption during his tenure, saying he is willing to swear by the Holy Quran to prove his innocence.

He also described politics as a lifelong venture, saying he would return to politics in 2027.

“I intend to return to politics in 2027 after completing my studies. There is no retirement in politics. By the will of Allah, we will return and continue serving the people,” El-Rufai declared in an interview on Freedom Radio Kaduna on Tuesday.

Insisting that he was not corrupt, El-Rufai said he was willing to swear by the Quaran and challenged his predecessors and current leaders to do the same.

“I didn’t join politics to steal money or enrich myself. I was satisfied with what I had before becoming governor,” El-Rufai said.

The former governor emphasised that his administration had been accused without concrete evidence, and his allies were being targeted by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

“I have left everything to Allah’s judgment. I have prayed and will remain silent on the issue,” El-Rufai stated, adding that he had instructed his lawyers to take legal action against those tarnishing his name.

El-Rufai’s denial comes amidst allegations by the Kaduna State House of Assembly that N423bn was stolen or misappropriated under El-Rufai’s watch as the governor of the state.

The former governor expressed his commitment to serving the people, even outside of government.

“You don’t need to hold a position in government to serve. We are still working with like-minded individuals who genuinely want to serve the people, not those seeking to enrich themselves.”

The Punch reports that the court adjourned to July 17 for hearing in a suit instituted by the former governor against the State House of Assembly and the Attorney General of the State.

El-Rufai had in June 2024 urged the court to quash the report of the state House of Assembly indicting him of N423bn theft.

The ad hoc committee set up by the Kaduna State House of Assembly to investigate all finances, loans and contracts awarded under El-Rufai had on June 5, 2024, indicting the ex-governor and some of his appointees of siphoning N423bn state funds.

The Assembly, while adopting the report of the 13-man panel, asked the incumbent Governor, Uba Sani, to refer El-Rufai, his Commissioner of Finance and other aides to relevant security agencies for investigation.

Hisbah bans sports betting in Kano

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Kano State Hisbah Board has banned all forms of sports betting in the state.

The Deputy Commander-General of the board, Dr Mujaheed Aminuddeen, made this known when he briefed journalists on the Hisbah’s renewed effort to fight immorality.

He said the Hisbah has re-launched ‘operation flush out immorality’ and its operatives would soon clampdown on individuals and groups bent on violating social order in the state.

He said in its efforts to restore sanity and discipline in the state, the Hisbah would arrest any landlord who rented out an apartment to unknown person(s) in view of the increasing cases of residential houses being used as lodges and motels in the city.

He stated that the board had further issued new rules regarding courtship, as henceforth, no prospective couples would be allowed to sit in tinted vehicles during courtship particularly in the night.

He pointed out that while street begging is prohibited by the law, female beggars who stayed outdoors late into the night would also be arrested.

Dr Mujaheed also announced that the Hisbah is disturbed by the increasing rate of prostitution among young girls and therefore warned that any woman seen in a tricycle after 10pm would also be apprehended.

He warned the public against violating any of the rules, which he said would attract stiff penalty.

He called on parents to be vigilant on their children, especially the females, and stop them from any misconduct capable of breaking any of the rules as stipulated across the state.

Nigerian Police and the Judges: A context to prioritize welfarism

by Folarin Kehinde October 1, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Over the years the Nigerian Police has been the vanguard of protection of lives and properties, duties which they have been doing despite many daunting challenges facing them, though many will neglect their role in the country due to ‘bribe mantra’ which is being associated with their profession, nonetheless a country without the police is living in the shadow of itself.

From the indepth investigation of crimes and arrest of hardened criminals to solving civil matters which some would say does not matter, and standing day and night under the sun and rain at designated check points, and to many who lost their lives in the line of duty, all in a bid to have a safer country, there is no gainsaying that the police deserve better treatment.

Unlike the military, judges and other law enforcement agents that have quarters and lodges well furnished and equipped, the tale of some police barracks is an eyesore, a testament was recently seen on the social media where their barracks were tagged showing the dilapidated structure and the bad state of their facility.

Coincidentally, one of such is the Falomo Ikoyi Barracks, Lagos which has been a sorry sight came under criticism and unfounded report of sale, and demolition. Meanwhile, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, dismissed the claim of sale but disclosed that the barracks will be redeveloped into a more befitting and modern barracks, with complementary facilities and modern infrastructure.

The PRO noted that the redevelopment of the barracks (including Falomo barracks) is set to be speedily completed after which the occupants will be duly offered fresh accommodation in the redeveloped sites but what is more worrisome is the paltry amount of N2 million that is given to the occupants of Falomo Barracks Blocks A and B as temporary relocation allowance.

The payment which has been made to 347 families after a validation process to facilitate their temporary relocation is not limited to Falomo barracks alone but such will be duplicated in other barracks.

“Similar redevelopment projects will be implemented across all police barracks nationwide over time. This is a strategic effort to improve the living conditions of our officers and their families, which is a key focus of the current police administration.” Adejobi said.

An X user, chude recently posted the demolition of Falomo Police Barracks https://x.com/chude__/status/1840386820107850065?s=48&t=rzMb5VUzn2LYbvfqGl-1fQ but what comes to mind is are the judges better of in terms of maintaining law and order who often times enjoy benefits from government and notable individuals?

Recently, President Bola Tinubu approved a 300% salary increase for the judges a move making the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) to earn #64 million annually including other benefits, barely a week ago, the president also directed the FCT minister to build forty judges quarters in Abuja among many other benefits.

From all indication however, the police need better lives to cater for their families and also for some of them who left wives and children at the mercy of the government, without mining words a nation cannot stand without an improved police system else the continued ‘means’ to survive will continue unabated.
