“Spend your resources judiciously, Nigeria is poor” – Tinubu’s minister warns Nigerians

by Folarin Kehinde October 17, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, has urged Nigerian families to have frank discussions about managing their resources carefully, advising them to prioritize basic needs.

The minister stated that Nigeria is not as wealthy as many believe, even as he called for more prudent financial management at both the national and household levels.

Bagudu made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja, following a meeting between Federal Government officials and representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The meeting comes in the wake of widespread economic hardship, worsened by the soaring costs of energy and food.

“The Bola Tinubu administration has made bold choices that, while challenging, are necessary for long-term growth,” Bagudu said.

He defended the government’s policies, noting that state and local governments are now better funded and that reforms are already yielding positive results in terms of investment.

“Tough decisions might come with some challenges, but we are dealing with them. Most of the measures taken have begun to yield a greater level of investment.

“We believe we have stopped the decline. We are not where we want to be yet, but let us confront our realities. We must tell ourselves that we are not as rich as we thought we were,” he stated.

Bagudu stressed the need for collective action, both at the family level and the national level, to mobilize resources effectively in response to the country’s economic challenges.

Nigerians are grappling with one of the worst economic crises in decades, as inflation surges, driven by skyrocketing energy and food costs.

Critics have pointed to President Bola Tinubu’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and the unification of foreign exchange rates as major contributors to the current economic instability.

Many believe these policies have led to unbearable inflation and an unprecedented rise in living costs.

“If Nnamdi Kanu is free, security situation in southeast would improve” – Bianca Ojukwu

by Folarin Kehinde October 17, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s former ambassador to Spain, Mrs Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu has renewed her call for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB is currently being detained by the Department of State Security.

Bianca, wife of late Biafra leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu made the appeal in the United States during the annual convention of the American Veterans of Igbo Descent, AVID.

AVID is composed of American citizens of Igbo parentage who are currently serving or who served in various branches of the United States military.

She said: “The state of insecurity in Igboland is posing an existential threat to life as we know it in our communities.

“The incessant killings and kidnappings, the increasing rate of annexation and takeover of community farmlands by armed herdsmen and other dangerous invaders have taken their toll on Agro and economic prospects, as well as social activities in most Igbo communities.”

She lamented the fact that many people were leaving their villages out of fear and once thriving communities had become depleted, devitalized and in some cases assuming the status and appearance of ghost towns.

She called on the governors of the South East who are the chief security officers of their states to intensify their individual and collective efforts towards bringing the alarming situation under control.

Bianca, however, stressed that once Nnamdi Kanu is set free, the security situation in the South East would greatly improve.

BREAKING: Reversing Tinubu’s reforms will wreck Nigeria’s economy – World Bank warns

by Folarin Kehinde October 17, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The World Bank has issued a stern warning that reversing the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration could have severe consequences for Nigeria’s economic future.

The warning was issued by Ndiame Diop, the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, during the launch of the Nigeria Development Update (NDU) report in Abuja.

According to Diop, the reforms implemented by the Tinubu administration, despite short-term challenges, are critical for Nigeria’s long-term economic stability.

He stated that any attempt to roll them back could lead to significant economic setbacks.

The Tinubu administration’s reforms, which have included fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange market liberalization, are intended to address structural issues in Nigeria’s economy, promote fiscal sustainability, and create an environment conducive to investment and economic development.

However, they have also led to immediate impacts, such as rising inflation and cost of living pressures, prompting debate on their implications for ordinary Nigerians.

The World Bank emphasized the importance of staying the course of the reforms, noting that while the changes are difficult, they are essential for achieving sustained economic recovery.

BREAKING: Nigeria’s aviation rating climbs to 75.5%, removed from global watchlist

by Folarin Kehinde October 17, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s aviation sector’s rating has improved to 75.5%, with the country officially removed from the global aviation watchlist.

This was revealed by Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, during the commissioning of the Juhi-2 Aviation Fuel Depot at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on Thursday.

The minister lauded the recent progress, crediting the improvement to steps taken by the government, including the signing of the Cape Town Convention Practice Direction, which propelled Nigeria’s rating from 49% to 70.5% in just a month.

He noted that with the removal from the watchlist, Nigeria’s airlines now have the opportunity to access dry lease aircraft, a development that is expected to bolster the industry.

Keyamo expressed optimism about the future of the country’s aviation sector.

“Very soon, we will see more aircraft in Nigeria, and this will necessitate an increase in Juhi-2’s capacity to meet the rising demand for aviation fuel,” he stated.

During the event, Patience Dappa, Chairman of Juhi-2 Limited, described the new facility as “the largest airside jet fuel depot in Nigeria.”

BREAKING: CNG-Powered Vehicles Explodes in Benin

by Folarin Kehinde October 17, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered vehicle exploded in Benin City, Edo State at the NIPCO filling station located at Ikpoba Hill, along the Benin-Auchi expressway, on Wednesday, injuring many people.

A viral video circulating on social media shows the vehicle scattered.

According to reports, three persons sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to a private hospital for medical attention.

This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of converting petrol-powered vehicles to CNG, a move advocated by the Nigerian government.

The Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), an arm of the government saddled with advocating for the conversion of petrol-run vehicles to CNG has responded to the incident.

The initiate expressed condolences to the victims, revealing that the vehicle involved in the explosion was illegally modified,

The statement reads, “The PCNGI commiserate with those injured in this avoidable incident, and thankful that no lives were lost.

“The PCNGI also note that safe handling of all hydrocarbon is critical to their safe use. A close examination of the cylinder in question in Benin City shows it was welded and modified and not an approved for use for CNG.

“The police, regulatory authorities and management of NIPCO are undertaking a painstaking investigation of the incident and we are coordinating with them.

“This incident reiterates the impetus of the PCNGI and our partners on the soon to be launched Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System at SON, NMDPRA, NADDC and FRSC to tackle any bad actors in the ecosystem that seeks to make this safer, cheaper, cleaner and more reliable source of fueling risky for all.

“We also call on all stakeholders to cooperate with the new system of regulation and ensure full compliance.

“Only accredited conversion centers must be patronized and safe handling of CNG just like petrol ensures safety of all.”

Presidency Reveals Stance Amid ‘Impeachment Plans’ for Senate President Akpabio

by Folarin Kehinde October 17, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian presidency has revealed its stance on an alleged impeachment of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The announcement was made by Senator Basheer Lado, President Bola Tinubu’s Adviser on National Assembly Matters (Senate).

Lado said claims of such impeachment are baseless.

According to him, the Executive and Legislature enjoy a healthy relationship, rendering any impeachment plans impossible.

It can be recalled that there were reports alleging that security agents had been deployed to prevent senators from carrying out their legislative duties over a potential impeachment.

However, Lado, in a statement, countered the claims.

He said, “I wish to categorically state that these reports are baseless and should be disregarded as there is no discord within the rank and file of the senators.

“The legislative body remains united in its commitment to the advancement of Nigeria’s democracy.

“The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in line with his dedication to a harmonious working relationship among the senators, recognises the critical role of the senate in driving legislative progress.

“His Excellency remains committed to ensuring that this collaboration is based on mutual respect, dialogue, and shared goals for peace, progress and prosperity of all Nigerians.

“I therefore urge the public to disregard such unfounded publications which could undermine the integrity of the legislature.”

JUST IN: Be Prepared for Libya Rematch – Peter Obi Tells Super Eagles

by Folarin Kehinde October 17, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the Super Eagles to gear up for a rematch against Libya, following the team’s harrowing experience at a Libyan airport last Sunday.

The Nigerian players and officials were stranded for hours, denied food and internet access, ahead of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match against Libya’s Mediterranean Knights.

In a statement on his X handle, Obi expressed sympathy for the team’s ordeal and commended their patriotism and patience in the face of unfair treatment.

He encouraged the players not to let the experience dampen their spirits, but rather recharge their determination to win the match and qualify for the Morocco 2025 AFCON.

The statement reads: Like every other patriotic Nigerian, I sincerely sympathize with our dear Super Eagles over their ordeal in Libya on their way to play the Morocco 2025 AFCON Qualifier return leg match, which was later delisted by CAF following the players’ decision not to play the match.

The neglect and abandonment they and their officials suffered at a remote Libyan airport is highly regrettable and justifies their alternative decision of returning home.

While we await the outcome of an investigation ordered by CAF, I wish to use this opportunity to commend the players for their patriotism, patience, and forbearance in the face of the unfair treatment by our Libyan brothers.

I appeal to them not to allow this sad experience dampen their zeal or break their spirit.

On the other hand, it should recharge their determination to fight to win the match whenever it takes place, to qualify for the Morocco 2025 AFCON, and, to win the championship.

In times like this, when Nigerians are left dejected by the sorry state of affairs in the country, every victory by the Super Eagles would not only serve to unite the country but also give Nigerians something to celebrate.

The sad experience of our national team in Libya should encourage all of us to work hard to bring more respect and dignity to our nation.

With the right leadership in place, Nigeria surely will rise again. Indeed, a new Nigeria is POssible.

by Folarin Kehinde October 16, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Sweden on a 2-day visit, representing Nigeria in bilateral engagements with the Scandinavian nation.

This trip comes two weeks after President Bola Tinubu departed Nigeria on October 2 for a two-week working vacation in the UK, where he later embarked on an “important engagement” in Paris, France.

During his working visit, Shettima will engage in bilateral talks with key Swedish government officials, including a meeting with Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden as well as another with the Swedish Prime Minister.

Shettima will also meet with Norrsken, a Stockholm-based venture capital impact investor, which recently launched Norrsken22, a $205 million tech investment fund for Africa.

This meeting will provide insights into how Nigerian entrepreneurs can benefit from this fund and further strengthen the technology ecosystem in Nigeria.

A statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to The President on Media & Communications reads:

At the instance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Vice President, during the working visit, will engage in high-level bilateral talks with key government officials, including a meeting with Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and the Swedish Prime Minister.

Senator Shettima will use the visit to explore opportunities for strengthened collaboration between Nigeria and Sweden in areas such as ICT, innovation, education, digitalisation, sustainable transport, mining, and agriculture.
