BREAKING: New Prices Emerge as FG Increases Petrol Pump Rates

by Folarin Kehinde October 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The administration of President Bola Tinubu has again increased the pump price of petrol.

The increase, which was made through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), now mean residents in Lagos will pay N1,025 per litre, while those in Abuja will pay N1,060 per litre.

This development comes after petrol prices were previously set at N1,030 in Abuja and N998 in Lagos at NNPCL stations in October, with other stations charging between N1,150 and N1,200 per litre.

As of Tuesday morning, NNPCL stations in Lagos and Abuja displayed the updated prices.

Since President Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, and announced the end of the fuel subsidy, petrol prices have skyrocketed from N145 to over N1,000.

FG reveals timeline to restore electricity in Northern Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde October 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has said within five days, electricity will be restored to the 17 northern states that have suffered blackout due vandalisation of the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line.

Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, said this while briefing State House correspondents after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, on Monday.

He said the disruption of electricity supply to the northern part of the country was due to vandalisation of Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, the major line that supplied electricity to the north.

He, however, said the transmission line would be repaired within three to five days.

Mr President has instructed the National Security Adviser (NSA), the chief of defense staff, the chief of Army staff, Chief of Air Staff, to provide the required security for the people that will fix the demolished line.”

“With the provision of full security, the TCN staff will have the confidence, together with the contractors, to go to the field and fix it.

So, I’m just appealing to our northern brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers, to bear with us that very soon, light will be restored, and we must all collectively protect our national grid to avoid further vandalisation,” said the minister.

He added that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had earlier given approval for the ministry of power to upgrade the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, one of the oldest transmission lines in Nigeria.

He said once the upgrade was done, the north would enjoy more stable electricity than what was being experienced now.

He promised to convene a meeting with the chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and all the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to ensure that customers in the north were not billed during the period they suffered blackout.

Adelabu explained that the national grid collapsed twice in recent times due to explosion of the transformer at Jeba plant.

He said before the explosion, the last disturbance on the grid was about four months ago.

“Let me tell you the truth of the matter is we have old infrastructure. We have a national grid that is more than 50 years old.

“We have national grid whose transmission lines are weak, the towers are falling, and the substations, the transformers are old.

“We have national grid whose transmission lines are weak, the towers are falling, and the substations, the transformers are old.

“In fact, the transformer that actually exploded in Jeba was 47 years old. We’ve been trying to revamp this, to change them, but they cannot all be changed overnight,” he said.

He said the ministry would continue to manage the grid to prevent frequent disturbances, until it was completely overhauled.

Details Emerge as Tinubu’s Redeployed Chief Security Officer Shuns Directive, Refuses to Leave Aso Rock Villa

by Folarin Kehinde October 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Adegboyega Fasasi, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to President Bola Tinubu, has refused to leave the Aso Rock Villa despite being redeployed by the Department of State Services (DSS) Director General, Tosin Ajayi, since October 20.

Sources within the Presidency revealed that Fasasi has the backing of influential people and state governors who allegedly paid him to ensure regular access to Tinubu.

However, other officials in the Villa accuse Fasasi of receiving bribes to control access to the President.

Fasasi was replaced by Rasheed Atanda Lawal, a deputy director of the SSS, who is currently enrolled in a fellowship course at the National Institute for Security Studies.

“There is a lot of pressure by governors and influential people from whom he has collected money to keep him, saying that he has to be there. We can confirm from Villa that the CSO refused to leave,” Sahara Reporters quoted one of the sources as saying.

“He’s accused of shaking down people to visit Tinubu. The logic of those supporting his stay is weird. They claim that if he leaves, they will have to bribe the new person afresh to have access to Tinubu,” the source further revealed.

“Some powerful people are backing Fasasi and are negotiating to let him leave in December,” another source corroborated.

Leading reporters reports that President Tinubu approved Fasasi’s removal, citing the need for him to attend a “strategic course”, which is a common pretext for replacing top security officials close to the president.

Lawal was reportedly due for promotion to Director in July 2023. However, his advancement was delayed by the former administration, allegedly because he was not favoured by the previous Director General.

In March 2019 a similar scenario happened when the then-President Muhammadu Buhari approved the redeployment of his Chief Security Officer, Bashir Abubakar, replacing him with Idris Ahmed.

It is reported that the Director General of the SSS at the time, Yusuf Bichi, convinced the president that Mr. Bashir should attend a “strategic course” at a university in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which led to his replacement.

JUST IN: Attempt to Remove Fubara Will Lead to Consequences – Dokubo Sends Warning to Tinubu, Wike

by Folarin Kehinde October 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A chieftain in the Niger Delta region and former President of Ijaw Youth Worldwide, Asari Dokubo, has warned President Bola Tinubu and Minister Nyesom Wike, that any attempt to remove Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office will have severe consequences.

Dokubo made the disclosure in an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday morning.

“President Tinubu becoming President, I should be able to tell him the truth and what is happening in Rivers State where Tinubu is supporting Nyesom Wike to destabilize Rivers State to disturb the peace of Rivers State,” Dokunbo said.

“As a stakeholder in Rivers State, I feel disappointed, totally disappointed for the president to allow his Minister to procure judgment of all sorts and threaten the people of Rivers State.”

“Because what they are trying to do is remove Fubara and nothing will happen. And I am saying that if you remove Fubara, something will happen. If you try to remove Fubara, something will happen.”

It can be recalled that Fubara and his former godfather, Nyesom Wike are at odds with each other over the control of the political structure in the state.

Tinubu not aware he is nicknamed T-Pain – Onanuga

by Folarin Kehinde October 28, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has described as mischievous the nickname ascribed to his principal over the economic hardship in the country.

Leading Reporters reports that Nigerians, who are angered by the ravaging economic downturn, coined the term T-Pain to describe President Tinubu.

According to them, the president, through his unfavourable policies, imposed hardship on the citizens.

Addressing the matter on Sunday, in an interview with Channels TV, Onanuga said Tinubu has not come to inflict pain on Nigerians but to “repair the economy.”

According to him, “the President is aware that the citizens are going through some difficulties,” but he is not aware that some persons have labelled him T-Pain on social media as “the President does not read what is on social media.”

He said: “Some people have also responded and called the president a different name. So, as far as I am concerned, it is a non-issue. Some people, out of mischief, just say somebody is a T-Pain. He (Tinubu) is not T-Pain.”

Libya rejects CAF’s verdict, files appeal

by Folarin Kehinde October 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Libya Football Federation (LFF) has launched an appeal to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the punishment meted out to them on the botched 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Nigeria.

Daily Trust had reported how the Super Eagles of Nigeria faced significant challenges, including a redirected flight, over 18 hours of delays, and logistical issue during a trip for return leg of the 1-0 match in favour of Nigeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

As a result, CAF canceled the match, awarding three goals and three points to the Super Eagles while slamming a $50,000 fine on the Libyans.

A statement by CAF Disciplinary Board in its ruling on Saturday, signed by the chairman, Ousmane Kane, said the Disciplinary Board ruled met and decided as follows:

The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

“The match No. 87 Libya v. Nigeria of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October in Benghazi) declared lost by forfeit by Libya (by a score of 3-0).

“The Libya Football Federation is ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000. The fine is to be paid within 60 days of notification of the present decision. All other and further motions or prayers for relief are dismissed.”

However, according to Libyan outlet alwasat.ly, the LFF considers as unfair the decision that has placed them at the bottom of Group D in the AFCON qualifiers.

The Libyan authorities have therefore engaged the services of a Tunisian lawyer, Ali Abbas, to defend their position.

The outcome of this appeal could have significant implications for the ongoing qualification process, particularly for Nigeria, who currently needs only one more point to secure their place in the competition in Morocco.

Self Help Africa, UK Govt leverages on Youth inclusion for Hand Washing Hygiene in Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde October 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

In a deliberate effort to enhance hand washing with soap and water, the government of the United Kingdom in partnership with Self Help Africa (SHA), Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Sports Development and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has leveraged on youth inclusion to drive hand hygiene in Nigeria.

The Country Director of Self Help Africa (SHA) Joy Aderele while speaking during the flag off of the campaign in Abuja said that SHA will be focusing on the inclusion of Nigeria’s youth, particularly corp members in driving hand hygiene awareness across grassroots communities, with the goal to empower young people to become champions of hand hygiene in their communities, in tandem with the National Youth WASH Strategy.

“Nigeria has one of the largest youth populations in the world, with 63% of the population under the age of 25. This demographic, while vulnerable to hygiene-related problems, represents a significant opportunity as advocates for change. This is why we will be engaging Nigerian youths through the NYSC scheme to inspire behaviour change among Nigerians and reinforce the importance of proper hygiene in public health,” .

Aderele said research has shown that 80 percent of germs are transmitted by unclean hands touching contaminated surfaces, which makes hand hygiene essential in preventing communicable diseases, saying in Nigeria, the significance of hand hygiene is even more important due to high incidences of hygiene-related diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, and respiratory infections.

She said that with less than one-third of Nigerians demonstrating proper handwashing techniques with soap according to the 2021 WASHNORM report, hand washing practices still need to improve.

Adele noted that the campaign was launched digitally on 15 October through an Instagram Live session with Aproko Doctor (Dr. Chinonso Egemba), a popular Nigerian health influencer, and Shadrack Shaaperaga Guusu, Head of WASH Programmes at SHA, has already reached thousands of young Nigerians.

Adele explained that the campaign is a month -long series of engagement aimed at raising awareness about the importance of hand hygiene under the theme of the 2024 Global Hand Washing Day “why are clean hands still important”.

Also speaking, the Health Adviser at Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) Dr Chidera Chukwu said the UK government is supporting the initiative following the 2021 Water, Sanitation and Hygiene National Outcome Routine Mapping WASHNORM survey which indicates that despite 99% of Nigerians knowing when to wash their hands only 8% practice proper hand hygiene.

He said the campaign is a call on the Nigerian youths , most especially members of corp members to become hygiene champions and advocate for sustainable health practices.

He stressed that the campaign aligns with FCDO’s goal of working closely with the Nigerian government and partners to build stronger and resilient systems through youth leadership and community involvement, saying they are excited to see how the Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Systems for Health Programme will drive the operationalisation of the Nation Youth Strategy.”

The Director Water Supply, Resources Federal Ministry of Water Resources Mr Babarinde Olusegun commended SHA for the effort in scaling up hand washing practices to the grass root.

He said the youth WASH program was launched in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Sports Development,as well as Water Resources and implemented by the NYSC, saying the ministry is focused on improving WASH infrastructures and policy implementation.
