No November salary for workers without valid residents registration number – Kwara govt

by Folarin Kehinde November 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kwara State Government has warned that workers without valid Kwara State Residents Registration number will not receive salary or bonuses from November 2024, LEADING REPORTERS gathered.

The state Commissioner for Finance, Dr Hauwa Nuru, disclosed this in a statement in Ilorin on Monday.

He recalled that the registration exercise started many months ago.

Kwara State Residents Registration Agency (KWSRRA) is empowered by law to have relevant data of everyone resident in the state and allocate unique identities to each person for effective planning, resource management, service delivery, and public safety, among others.

“In line with the administration’s commitment to accountability and transparency in resource administration, a directive had since been issued mandating all state employees, including those across the 16 local government areas, to complete their registration KWSRRA.

“Effective November 2024, workers who have not registered will not receive salary payments or bonuses.

The KWSRRA registration is a vital step toward establishing a comprehensive and accurate database that enables us to serve Kwara State residents more effectively.

“Ensuring that every state worker is registered strengthens our payroll system, enhances service delivery, and builds trust in our processes,” according to Nuru.

The statement explained that the initiative will play a key role in resource management and planning within the state.

The integrity of our data impacts all our financial and administrative systems. A complete database helps us make informed decisions, allocate resources efficiently, and ensure that every eligible worker is compensated fairly and accurately.

“All state employees who have not yet registered are urged to promptly visit the nearest KWSRRA registration centre to complete their enrollment.

“By following this directive, Kwara State is working to establish a more efficient and equitable system for its workforce and residents alike,” the statement added.

EFCC Takes Action on Suit Seeking to Prevent Arrest of Lagos State Governor Sanwo-Olu

by Folarin Kehinde November 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to dismiss a fundamental rights suit filed by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The suit aims to prevent the EFCC from arresting or prosecuting Sanwo-Olu after his tenure.

The anti-graft body had dismissed the suit as speculative and a mere conjecture.

Recall that the Lagos State Government had denied any involvement in the suit, stating that Sanwo-Olu never authorized any lawyer to file it. Lawal Pedro, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, emphasized that Sanwo-Olu has nearly three years left in office and enjoys constitutional immunity, making the lawsuit unnecessary.

“We need to clarify that Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at no time, sued or briefed any legal practitioner to file a suit on his behalf concerning the above subject matter,” the statement read in part.

The EFCC filed its counter-affidavit on October 31. Ufuoma Ezire, a superintendent and litigation secretary, swore to the counter-affidavit, denying claims of harassment, threats, or investigations against Sanwo-Olu or his staff.

“That I know as a fact that the defendant invites members of the public for interview, interrogation or any engagement vide a written invitation, phone calls or text messages by any of its officers who shall introduce himself or herself by name, rank, designation, and Section to enable the invitee to trace the officer easily.

“That no officer of the defendant could have invited the plaintiff or his aides without furnishing them with such detailed particulars of himself.

“That contrary to the depositions in paragraphs 5 of the plaintiff affidavit, the defendant did not intimidate, harass or threaten the plaintiff or subject him to any trauma,” he said.

He said the agency was unaware of any threat to arrest Mr Sanwo-Olu’s aides.

He also stated that the anti-graft agency was not aware of the “accusation of maladministration or diversion of Lagos State’s funds nor is it aware of any likelihood of a breach of the applicant’s right to liberty or right to own movable and immovable properties in this case.”

“That the action of the plaintiff,, in this case is mere conjecture and speculations as there is no petition or any intel gathered before the defendant to warrant the men and officers of same to invite, threaten to arrest the plaintiff at the moment.

“That the entirety of the dispositions contained in the plaintiffs’ affidavit are not true, as the application is misconceived and brought in bad faith to mislead this honourable court.

“That the defendant is not in a position to deny or confirm the depositions in paragraphs 4 and 4(iii) as the defendant is not a party to the conversation between deponent and the plaintiff.

Senate reveals date for Tinubu’s 2025 budget presentation to National Assembly

by Folarin Kehinde November 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s 2025 budget presentation to the National Assembly could be postponed until December 2024, with no clear timeline set by the executive.

As of early November, essential documents such as the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) have yet to be submitted, a significant delay compared to previous years when these documents were typically ready by October.

The budget estimates were presented in previous administrations by the first week of October, following the National Assembly’s review of the MTEF and FSP.

However, this year’s delay in submitting these key fiscal documents has raised concerns, with the process already running behind schedule.

Senator Sani Musa, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, clarified that President Bola Tinubu’s administration determines the timing of the 2025 budget presentation.

“The decision lies with the executive, not the National Assembly,” Musa said.

He explained that the National Assembly had recently engaged with figures like the Minister of Finance and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL) CEO to discuss the performance of the 2024 budget.

“They are working on the 2025 budget, and once completed, it will be forwarded to us,” he added.

While the delay in submitting the MTEF, which outlines critical fiscal parameters such as oil price benchmarks, exchange rates, and inflation projections, has raised concerns, Finance Minister Wale Edun remains optimistic.

“The economy is taking good shape, and we see positive indicators,” he remarked following a recent interactive session.

Senator Musa also noted a reduction in Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio as a sign of ongoing economic reforms. He assured the public that significant improvements would materialise within 16 to 18 months.

The delay in presenting the 2024 budget resulted in its late passage, and President Tinubu signed it into law on January 1, 2024. As the executive branch finalises the 2025 budget, the National Assembly will be ready to scrutinise the document once it is submitted.

2027: Calls for Goodluck Jonathan’s return gains momentum in the north

by Folarin Kehinde November 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Some northern leaders have continued the push for Dr Goodluck Jonathan’s return as Nigeria’s president in 2027.

A political group in the north, The Arewa Consensus for Jonathan, has joined the campaign and is urging the former president to enter the 2027 presidential race.

The group’s leader, Munir Musa, who made the appeal during a press conference in Bauchi over the weekend, stated that Jonathan’s return to office was crucial to addressing Nigeria’s pressing economic and security challenges.

He argued that Nigeria, grappling with severe economic downturns and rising security threats, needs a leader with Jonathan’s experience and competence to restore stability.

“The nation is at a crossroads, and we believe that Goodluck Jonathan is the right man to steer us out of the current malaise,” Musa said.

He expressed confidence that Jonathan’s leadership could heal the country’s deepening wounds and usher in a new era of progress.

Petrol landing cost drops in Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde November 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s landing cost of Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) dropped to N971 per litre in November 2024.

This is according to the latest data released by the Major Energies Marketers Association.

The figure represents a 20.23 percent drop in the landing cost of imported petrol, compared to N1,219 per litre recorded in August 2024.

The development is attributed to the fluctuations experienced in the Naira-dollar exchange rate and price of crude at the international market.

At the close of work on Friday, the Naira to Dollar exchange rate stood at N1678.87, while Brent crude was $73.63 per barrel, compared to $80.72 per barrel and an exchange rate of N1,611 per dollar in August 2024.

The drop in the landing cost of petrol comes despite the price of the product being sold at between N1060 per litre and N1,200 per litre in Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited retail outlets and other filling stations.

Recall that the price of fuel had increased from N617 per litre in August 2024 to over N1060 per litre as of November 11, 2024.

Dangote Refinery recently stated that its petrol is sold at ex-depot prices of N960 and N990 per litre for ships and trucks, respectively.

Meanwhile, in a communiqué released by the Nigeria Labour Congress on Sunday, the union said the country’s pump price of petrol is higher than the market value.

Obaseki has escaped – Edo Gov-elect, Okpebholo allege

by Folarin Kehinde November 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Edo State Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo has expressed concern over what he described as Godwin Obaseki’s bizarre public displays.

He claimed that Obaseki has disappeared from the state.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday and signed by Godspower Inegbe, Okpebholo said Edo people are worried by Obaseki’s reckless statements and urged him to evaluate his state of mind.

The Governor-Elect in the statement raised the alarm regarding the whereabouts of Obaseki, who he claimed reportedly fled Benin City, the Edo State capital, using a disguised bus.

The statement revealed that Obaseki chased out everyone from the Government House on Friday before escaping to a yet-to-be known location more than 72 hours before his official departure from office.

The statement further noted that Obaseki is making the false claims to shift attention away from his sinister plans to leave the country through the land borders.

“As of Friday, 8th of November, the whereabouts of Obaseki is unknown. He has chased everyone out of Edo State Government House. He has abandoned governance in the State, and he is on the run.

“He has escaped through the road out of Benin. He did not pass through the airport. If he is as popular as he claims, why did he not use the airport to escape? Instead, he hired a bus and disguised while escaping from Edo State.

Obaseki is trying to push out these narratives in order to distract the public. His antics will not work. We know his plans, and we will continue to expose his shenanigans to Edo people,” the statement read.

VIDEO “I am not gay” Desmond Elliot denies widespread allegation

by Folarin Kehinde November 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Desmond Elliot, a prominent Nigerian actor and politician, has dismissed claims that he is gay, describing them as a publicity stunt.

The rumours emerged after a blog post named several Nigerian celebrities as being gay.

The list, which included high-profile figures from the country, sparked a strong backlash from netizens.

In an interview with TVC, which went viral on Friday, Elliot addressed the claims, noting that he would not dignify unfounded accusations with a response.

He said, “Why would I respond to allegations made against me when it does not affect my life either way?

“Secondly, it is an opinion that has been conceived, and I do not think it is necessary for me to confirm whether it is true or not; as long as I’m affecting people positively, I’m good.”

Elliot stressed that individuals’ personal choices are their own, as long as they remain within the law.

“If you feel you identify as something, as long as it is within the law, that is your choice. People do not have to accept it, but do what you wish.”

“So let me say right here, I am straight. You could not find anyone straighter than me.”

“If some people want to enjoy themselves through publicity, that is up to them, but I do not care. Do what you wish and enjoy yourself, but do it within the law and with consideration for your neighbours.”

Despite Hardship FG spent N5bn to renovate Vice President’s residence in Lagos

by Folarin Kehinde November 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Despite widespread economic hardship and soaring inflation across the country, the Federal Government has allocated N5bn towards the renovation of the vice president’s official residence in Lagos State.

In the N2.17tn supplementary budget passed in November 2023, the Federal Government had budgeted N3bn for the renovation of the vice president’s official residence in Lagos State and another N2.5bn for the renovation of his official residence located within the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

However, checks by our correspondent using GovSpend, a civic tech platform that tracks and analyses the Federal Government’s spending, showed that a total of N5,034,077,063 was spent in May and September this year for the renovation of the VP’s Lagos residence.

A monthly breakdown of the amount showed that on May 31, 2024, the State House paid N2,827,119,051 to an engineering firm, Denderi Investment Limited, for the renovation of the official quarters of the vice president in Lagos.

Similarly, on September 5, 2024, the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President paid the same firm N726,748,686 for additional renovation work on the VP’s Lagos home.

On the same day, the Chief of Staff’s office paid N1,480,209,326 to the same firm for Phase 2 renovations of the VP’s Lagos residence.

Recall that in November 2023, the Federal Capital Territory Administration said it would spend N15bn to build a “befitting” official residence for the Vice President in Abuja.

The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, disclosed this while appearing before the House of Representatives committee to defend the FCT’s N61.5bn 2023 supplementary budget.

But an advocacy group, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, objected to the expenditure, describing it as a fundamental breach of the Nigerian Constitution and the country’s international anti-corruption and human rights obligations.

“It will be a grave violation of the public trust and constitutional oath of office for the Senate to approve the plan to spend N15bn on ‘a befitting residence’ for the Vice President at a time when the Federal Government is set to spend 30 per cent (that is, N8.25tn) of the country’s 2024 budget of N27.5tn on debt service costs,” SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, stated.
