written by Folarin Kehinde

The Director General of the National Teachers Institute (NTI), Professor Garba Maitafsir, has said that as a lecturer at the University, he came across a PhD Student who could not write his name properly.

He said that the falling standard of education was not as a result of systemic failure, but as a result of teaching, insisting that teachers’ quality must be properly checked if Nigeria must get its education system right.

He said that the falling standard of education was not as a result of systemic failure, but as a result of teaching, insisting that teachers’ quality must be properly checked if Nigeria must get its education system right.

Also, the Chairman of Teachers Service Board (TSB), in Kaduna State, Adamu Makadi said that teachers earn about 27% higher than their peers in the other sectors of the state government civil service.

The NTI boss and Adamu Makadi spoke at a One-Day Workshop on Teachers Issues In Conflict and Protracted Crisis Settings: Documenting the Effectiveness of the Kaduna Teacher Reforms.

According to Makadi, before the education reforms in Kaduna, it was discovered that. nothing really was wrong with the education system, but with the teachers, hence the need for the reform to check the recruitment, deployment and retention of teachers in the state.

“There is nothing wrong with our system of education, the problem is the quality of teachers, so Kaduna State Government took the bull by the horns by initiating a reform in the educational sector, particularly in the areas of recruitment, deployment and retention of teachers.”

“The recruitment exercise has been digitalised and adverts are open to all able and qualified candidates to apply, which has been working for us perfectly. The reform has enabled us to recruit and deploy based on their qualifications and competencies to see where they can best fit in. We also deploy teachers based on proximity to their places of residence.”

EFCC arrests ex-NCDMB boss Wabote over $35m Brass project fraud scandal

by Folarin Kehinde November 13, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Timber Kesiye Wabote, the former Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), over allegations of a $35 million fraud linked to the failed Brass Project in Bayelsa State.

The investigation ties Wabote to a misappropriation scandal involving public funds allocated for a refinery and infrastructure project intended to boost local energy capabilities.

Wabote’s arrest follows the earlier detention of Akintoye Adeoye Akindele, the Managing Director of Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited, who is facing charges of money laundering, misappropriation, and diversion of public funds.

Under Wabote’s leadership, the NCDMB reportedly provided counterpart funding of $35 million to support the development of an Energy Infrastructure Park in the Okpoama Community, Brass Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

According to sources, the project was meant to include a refinery, jetty, gas plant, power plant, data center, and tank farm, designed to process 2,000 barrels of oil per day.

However, investigations reveal that the project was abandoned in December 2020 with minimal progress made, despite the significant funds allocated.

The source said, “NCDMB under the watch of Wabote allegedly paid the $35 million to Akindele to build a 2000 barrel per day, BPD, Refinery, Jetty, Gas Plant, Power Plant, Data Centre and Tank Farm at Brass Free Trade Zone, FTZ, Okpoama Community in Brass LGA of Bayelsa State.

“Since December 2020 when the payments were made, Akindele allegedly abandoned the project with little or nothing to show for the huge sum paid to him.

“Preliminary investigations showed that Wabote’s NCDMB financed 17 different projects, including the 2000 barrel per day, BPD, Refinery, Jetty, Gas Plant, Power Plant, Data Centre and Tank Farm at Brass Free Trade Zone, FTZ, Okpoama Community in Brass LGA of Bayelsa State.

“His arrest on Tuesday is in connection with the botched refinery for which $35 million was paid.

“He was picked up following the arrest of the Managing Director of Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited, Mr. Akintoye Adeoye Akindele for alleged misappropriation, money laundering and diversion of $35 million public funds.”

Wabote’s tenure as NCDMB Executive Secretary, from 2016 to 2023, saw multiple such investments, including the $35 million allocated for the Brass Free Trade Zone initiative.

The EFCC is currently detaining him at its Abuja facility, and they are pursuing other suspects involved in the case.

Contacted, EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, on Wednesday, confirmed Wabote’s arrest and detention, but declined further comments.

written by Folarin Kehinde

A fuel tanker explosion at the Jigawa-Kano border on Tuesday, November 12, sparked panic as fire erupted along Maiduri Road, according to the Federal Fire Service (FFS) Jigawa Command.

Aliyu M. A., the FFS’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, revealing swift action by emergency responders.

At approximately 10:43 hours on November 12, 2024, we received a distress call from Kuho Village Head, Zubairu Ahmad, reporting a tanker accident at Tsaida, Kwanar Kalle, near Gamoji village,” Aliyu stated.

He added, “The FFS responded promptly, arriving at the scene by 10:50 hours. The fire was contained and brought under control.”

The incident follows a deadly tanker explosion in October that claimed over 170 lives in Majia, Taura Local Government Area. In that instance, a petrol-laden truck travelling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State exploded, causing widespread casualties.

Though no casualties were reported in the latest fire, the recurrence of such incidents has raised public concerns over fuel transportation safety in Jigawa.

FG Targets $10 Billion Power Investment with Private Sector Collaboration

by Folarin Kehinde November 13, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian government has announced plans to partner with the private sector to address the $10 billion funding gap required to overhaul the country’s power sector in the next five to ten years.

This move was confirmed after a meeting between the Director General of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), Dr. Jobson Oseodion Ewalefoh, and the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo A. Adelabu, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Dr Ewalefoh stressed the critical role of the private sector in revitalising the power sector. “The investment required in power is very huge and government cannot fund it alone, so we have to leverage the financing capacity of the private sector. That is why the ICRC was set up to regulate this leverage,” he said.

He highlighted that while the government has a vital role, only private-sector collaboration can bring the required capital and expertise.

The Minister of Power echoed these concerns, underscoring the immense investment needed for a stable electricity supply.

“For us to achieve 24-hour power supply across Nigeria in the next 5 to 10 years, there is a minimum funding requirement of about $10 billion. The government cannot afford that, when there are other critical sectors in need of funding. We need to do this in collaboration with the private sector, and the best way is through concession,” Adelabu explained.

Both officials agreed that optimising current infrastructure performance and financing new projects would necessitate close collaboration between public and private entities.

To facilitate this, the ICRC, responsible for regulating public-private partnerships (PPP), is set to streamline the processes involved.

Dr Ewalefoh outlined a six-point policy to accelerate project delivery and prevent delays caused by underprepared companies.

To reassure stakeholders about the integrity of the process, Dr Ewalefoh also discussed the commission’s measures to ensure accountability.

“We are insisting on inserting conditions precedent to all PPP agreements so that any preferred bidder that defaults will have their agreement automatically nullified,” he affirmed.

This initiative marks a significant step toward revitalising Nigeria’s power sector and improving electricity supply nationwide.

The government hopes to unlock foreign direct investment by leveraging private sector investment, stimulating economic growth, and providing Nigerians with consistent, reliable power in the coming years.

Insecurity: Over 971 Nigerians kidnapped in October 2024 – Report

by Folarin Kehinde November 13, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

No fewer than 971 Nigerians were abducted across the country in October 2024, LEADING REPORTERS gathered.

The revelation is coming amid the emergence of a new terror group, ‘Lakurawa’ in the northwestern part of the country.

The data is contained in the ‘October 2024 Nigeria Security Report’ by Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, BSIL, a security risk management and intelligence consulting company, and made available to DAILY POST on Tuesday.

The report said there’s a deterioration of security metrics of incidents, abductions and fatalities in the country, warning that the rising numbers suggested that 2024 was likely to be the worst year in security performance in about a decade.

It explained that the month under review was marked mainly by developments associated with violent activities, including killings and kidnapping for ransom mainly by non-state armed groups (NSAGs), criminal gangs, cult groups, and armed ethnic militias, and social unrest in the form of protests and labour action triggered by the harsh socio-economic circumstances in the country and political activities.

The security firm revealed that data collected indicated that the country recorded a 51% rise in fatalities and 24.42% increase in abductions.

A breakdown of the report according to BEACON INTEL showed Nigeria recorded 861 security incidents, of which 64.92% (559) were attributed to security threats, 24.79% (215) consisted of security forces operations, and 4.99% (43) were attributed to safety incidents from October 1-31, 2024.

In the month under review, the country also recorded 1545 fatalities, with 67.70% attributed to civilian deaths, 25.89% to criminals/non-state armed groups (NSAGs), and 6.40% attributed to security forces and 971 individuals abducted.

In terms of distribution across the country, the North East and North West regions were the most affected by security incidents, which account for 52.03% of the total incidents, respectively, whereas the South East reported the fewest incidents at 7.78%.

The number of individuals abducted increased from 807 in September 2024 to 971 in October 2024, marking a 20.32% increase and a shift from the 11.03% decline recorded in September 2024.

“The North West was the hardest hit, with 83.83% of all abductions occurring in this region, while the South West region experienced the least number of abductions with 0.21%.

“Of the total number of abducted individuals, Northern Nigeria accounted for 954 (98.25%), while Southern Nigeria accounted for 17 (1.75%),” the report added.

Trump Appoints Elon Musk to Key Administrative Role

by Folarin Kehinde November 13, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President-elect Donald Trump has appointed billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to head the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Their mission is clear: reduce bureaucracy, eliminate waste, and streamline federal agencies to enhance economic growth and accountability in Washington.

Trump described DOGE as a potential “Manhattan Project” for the 21st century, aiming to overhaul a government budget that exceeds $6.5 trillion annually.

He emphasised that Musk and Ramaswamy, both known for their outsider perspectives and business expertise, would bring fresh, entrepreneurial ideas to Washington.

“Musk and Ramaswamy will provide advice and guidance from outside the government, working alongside the White House and Office of Management and Budget,” Trump said. “They will create an entrepreneurial approach to government that has never been seen before.”

The president-elect stressed that the initiative’s primary goal is to reduce government spending while increasing operational efficiency.

“They will work together to liberate our economy and make the U.S. government accountable to ‘We The People,’” Trump added.

The new department is set to reshape Washington by focusing on cutting unnecessary regulations and driving large-scale reforms.

The success of the DOGE will have significant implications for U.S. politics and public policy, marking a bold step toward a more efficient federal government.

2027: How Opposition Can Unseat Tinubu – Primate Ayodele Reveals

by Folarin Kehinde November 13, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Primate Elijah Ayodele, the leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has warned opposition political parties about the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ayodele emphasized that a united opposition front is the only way to unseat President Bola Tinubu.

He advised major opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to form a coalition, or their efforts would be in vain.

Ayodele explained that without a collective strategy and a strong, capable candidate, the opposition would face certain defeat.

He remarked, “If PDP, Labour, NNPP don’t unite to form a coalition and propose one rugged and solid candidate for the 2027 presidential election, they won’t be able to unseat President Tinubu.”

Further criticizing the PDP’s internal dynamics, Ayodele warned that if the party fielded former Vice President Atiku Abubakar again, it would result in a “disaster.”

He added that no current PDP governor had the necessary strength to challenge Tinubu’s presidency.

“If PDP decides to field Atiku, it will be a disaster, they will lose the election,” Ayodele said. “There is no sitting governor in the PDP who has the capacity to become president in 2027. They are not strong enough.”

As the 2027 election approaches, Ayodele’s remarks highlight the growing pressure for opposition unity if the opposition is to have a fighting chance against the incumbent president.
