2027: Lagos Speaker, Obasa joins governorship race, set to battle Seyi Tinubu, others

by Folarin Kehinde November 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Lagos political scene is buzzing as talks about Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s successor begin to surface.

With 2027 still a few years away, names like deputy governor; Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos East senator; Tokunbo Abiru, and Chief of Staff to the president, Femi Gbajabiamila and the President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi, are quietly entering discussions.

ThisDay reports that the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa has also joined the fray.

Then there is Obasa, the longest-serving Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. He commands immense grassroots support and is known for his resilience in overcoming political challenges.

“Obasa’s strong ties to local communities particularly make him a force to reckon with, not to mention his alignment with the Mandate Group further strengthens his position,” a report by the newspaper noted.

Making reference to Obasda’s strong political standing in the state, the report added: “Abiru’s corporate ties and Gbajabiamila’s national profile add intrigue to the mix. But neither’s grassroots influence seems solid enough for them to contest against Hamzat or Obasa.”

Seyi Tinubu: “Lagos won’t serve father and son – Lagos PDP

by Folarin Kehinde November 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has opposed the idea of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, succeeding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the state’s governor in 2027.

This follows endorsements by groups like the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, which suggested Seyi Tinubu could run for governor in Lagos. Another group, Friends of Seyi Tinubu, described him as a visionary leader with exceptional qualities.

Responding, Lagos PDP spokesperson Hakeem Amode rejected the proposition, saying, “Lagos will not serve him.”

He argued that governance should not become a family inheritance, warning that any attempt to impose Seyi would meet strong resistance.

“Governorship is not a gift,” Amode told Punch, adding that the people of Lagos showed their disapproval of the Tinubu political dynasty during the last presidential election by voting against the president.

BREAKING: Edo Governor Okpebholo Moves to Investigate Obaseki Administration

by Folarin Kehinde November 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has approved the formation of a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to investigate the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

This decision comes despite a previous plea from the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje to refrain from probing the previous administration.

According to a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, the committee’s primary task is to verify the state’s assets and liabilities under the previous administration.

The committee, which is scheduled to be inaugurated on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the Government House in Benin City, comprises respected sons and daughters from Edo State.

The members of the committee include Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe as Chairman, Anslem Ojezua as Deputy Chairman, and Prince Kassim Afegbua, Hon. Patrick Ikhariale, Mr. Taiwo Akerele, Hon. Patrick Idiake, and Hon. Rasaq Bello-Osagie as members. Other members are Mr. Fredrick Unopah, Frank Osumuede Edebor Esq who will serve as Secretary, Mrs. Abdallah Eugenia, Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon, Pharm. Kenny Okojie, Mrs. Lyndsey Tes-Sorae, and Hon. Abass Braimoh.

The statement from the governor’s office added, “In furtherance of the Governor’s initiative to set the State on the path of development and accountable leadership, the need to set up a State Assets Verification Committee becomes very imperative.

“Despite repeated calls for a more holistic database of the Assets and Liabilities of the previous administration, the Godwin Obaseki-led Government came up with very scanty and limited Assets and Liabilities of the State.

“In line with the Governor’s campaign promise to ensure probity, accountability and transparency in Government, and to deepen the governance process, a Committee made up of respected sons and daughters from Edo State has to be constituted.

“The committee will be inaugurated at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, on Tuesday, 26th November, 2024, by 1 pm prompt.”

BREAKING: FCT Minister Wike Reportedly Dissolves Appeal Court Panel Over Rivers LG Election Ruling

by Folarin Kehinde November 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nyesom Wike, has reportedly ordered the secret dissolution of the Special Court of Appeal in the FCT that gave a favourable ruling on the Rivers State Local Government Elections.

The panel was “quietly disbanded” after it upheld the Rivers State Local Government elections conducted by the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The controversy surrounding the Rivers State Local Government Elections has been ongoing, with the Court of Appeal in Abuja nullifying a judgement of the Federal High Court that barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the voters register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for the conduct of local elections in the state.

The appellate court panel, led by Onyekachi Otisi, had held that the lower court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit, citing Section 28 of the Electoral Act, which does not accommodate elections conducted by state governments.

The court had held that “The Electoral Act does not apply to local government elections and the lower court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the appeal.”

According to sources, Mr. Wike is not happy with the development.

The FCT minister has reportedly reached out to Senior Judicial officers and fixers, secretly disbanding the first panel that gave the favourable ruling.

The new panel approved by Wike is litigating on the matter from Abuja, where Wike’s wife is also a senior judge. Wike is also enraged over the decision of the accountant general to pay Rivers allocation based on what he claimed was a mere “stay of execution.”

“The panel that sat to hear the new appeal was headed by Justice Hamah Barka and it also has Justice Adebukola Banjoko and Justice Peter C. Obiora. Wike got upset and reached out to Senior Judicial officers and fixers. He secretly disbanded the first panel that gave the favourable ruling,” SaharaReporters quoted a source as saying.

“Ironically, Justice Barka had recused himself from the Rivers State issue in the panel earlier set for the same purpose, saying he was under attack by some forces claiming he was compromised,” the source further revealed.

“The new panel approved by Wike is litigating on the matter from Abuja Where Wike’s wife is also a senior judge,” the source added.

“Wike is also enraged over the decision of the accountant general to pay Rivers allocation based on what he claimed was a mere “stay of execution.”

The federal government had initially said it would halt the October monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenue payment to Rivers State, citing a court order as the reason. However, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) later cited a subsisting appeal, saying that the allocation could not be stopped.

Thieves invade Celestial Church, steal harvest cows

by Folarin Kehinde November 23, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

LESS than seven days to the ninth “Adult Harvest Thanksgiving Service” of the Celestial Church of Christ, Testimony Parish, Elerumoke, Egbeda, Iyana Ajia in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State, suspected thieves desecrated the temple of God and made away with two large cows meant for the celebration of the thanksgiving. The animals were worth about N2 million.

The thieves had struck last Saturday after the shepherd-in-charge of the parish and other notable leaders of the church had gone to bed.

Members of the various committees set up by the church were taken by surprise when they learnt of the theft.

A leader of the church identified as Oluso Ayo confirmed the incident to Saturday Tribune on Thursday.

He said: “The incident really happened. Suspected thieves invaded our church premises and made away with two cows meant for the harvest celebration. The cows, which were tethered, were untied by the suspected thieves.

“We saw the footprints of the thieves and the cows but we cannot say the exact place the animals were taken to.

“We learnt that such an incident had happened in the neighbourhood before, but not in our church.”

One of the church members who preferred anonymity said: “If this thing could happen in a church environment, where else is safe in this country?

“I have never heard before that thieves invaded a church and stole cows, not minding the sizes. The incident is a further confirmation that things have gone awry in this country.”

The church had earlier posted on its X account: “Hallelujah. Two missing Cows: Dear Celestials and the general public, these two huge cows were stolen where they were tied in the church premises at CCC, Testimony Parish, Elerumoke area, Egbeda, Iyana Ajia, Ibadan, Oyo State.

JUST IN: PDP Governors Storm Jos for Meeting

by Folarin Kehinde November 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governors under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have arrived in Jos, Plateau State, for a key meeting on Saturday.

The meeting, which comes ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for next Thursday in Abuja, is aimed at addressing the ongoing leadership tussle within the party.

Although the specific agenda of the meeting has not been officially disclosed, sources within the party indicate that the gathering of the PDP governors in Jos is aimed at solidifying their positions in the upcoming leadership elections. The dispute over the party’s leadership, particularly regarding the position of the national chairman, has been a point of contention in recent months.

The meeting is expected to provide a platform for the governors to articulate their positions and strategies for the election of a new national chairman at the convention.

The party’s leadership crisis went bad following the suspension of the former national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, by his ward exco. Since then, the search for a new leader has been fraught with disagreements over who should fill the role.

A faction of the party led by 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar is pushing for the removal of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum. Meanwhile, another faction backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, is seeking his retention till a national convention in 2025.

“As the PDP moves closer to its national convention, all eyes are now on the Jos meeting, with party loyalists and observers keen to see whether the governors can broker a resolution to the leadership crisis.

The outcome of this crucial meeting could determine the future trajectory of the party, especially in its quest for political relevance in the coming years,” BusinessDay quoted a source as saying in Jos.

Edo recovers 3 Govt Vehicles, declares over 200 missing

by Folarin Kehinde November 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The committee set up by the Edo government to recover government assets says over 200 vehicles belonging to the state are missing.

The chairman of the committee Kelly Okungbowa shared the information with journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital on Friday.

He said three of these vehicles have been recovered less than a day after the group was inaugurated.

Okungbowa assured the Edo people that the committee was determined to recover the missing government vehicles.

According to him, bags of rice and garri meant to be palliatives from the Federal Government for the people of the state were discovered in one of the three vehicles recovered.

Governor Monday Okpebholo had set up the committee on Thursday to recover all government vehicles said to be in private custody.

A lot of vehicles used by the past administration are missing as those in the custody of the vehicles have refused to return them. The governor deemed it fit to inaugurate us today with a mandate to recover all government vehicles in private hands,” Okungbowa said during the inauguration of the committee.

“I am the chairman while my vice is the former speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly EDHA, Rt. Hon. Victor Edoror. We have our members across the three Senatorial Districts in Edo State and we are ready to do the job, abiding by the law.

“We want to appeal to members of the public who might be aware of anyone still keeping government vehicles in their houses to please inform us to enable the committee to recover such for the Edo State Government.

“We have two weeks to carry out this task and as I speak to you, we already have some vital information regarding some persons who are still holding government vehicles. We will do the job according to the law and the State government and the people will be happy. You can reach us on 08110165121”

Labour Party denies ‘Agreement’ with Tinubu over 2027 Presidency

by Folarin Kehinde November 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Labour Party (LP) has denied reports that the party leadership is partnering with President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

The reports alleged that the LP has agreed with Tinubu to deliver his second term if he decides to contest.

However, in a statement released on Friday, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, dismissed the claims as baseless and unfounded.

Ifoh said the party has consistently denied allegations of any partnership or collaboration with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“As a matter of fact, the Labour Party is the most visible opposition party today, and our National Chairman, Barrister Abure, is the leading voice in the opposition camp, consistently criticizing the present government,” Ifoh stated.

Ifoh also highlighted the party’s efforts to reposition itself and deepen participatory democracy in Nigeria. He noted that the party has established an Electoral Reform Committee to promote credible, fair, and transparent electoral processes. Additionally, the party has introduced e-membership registration, which has attracted thousands of subscribers.

“All these efforts to reposition the party, for someone to be demarketing such a party in such an unguarded and callous manner, is most ridiculous and unfortunate.

“We are therefore challenging Deji Adeyanju and any other person to come up with facts and proofs that either the party leadership or Mr. Abure intends to work for President Bola Tinubu or his party, the APC in the 2027,” he stated.

BREAKING: Tinubu writes Senate, seeks confirmation of Oluyede as Chief of Army Staff

by Folarin Kehinde November 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has sent a letter to the Senate seeking confirmation of Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede’s appointment as the substantive Chief of Army Staff.

Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s spokesman, revealed this in a statement on Friday, November 22.

He said President Tinubu is seeking Oluyede’s confirmation by the provision of Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act.

President Tinubu appointed Oluyede as the Acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30 following the illness of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja. General Lagbaja, however, died on 5 November.

“President Tinubu is confident about the leadership qualities, professional integrity, and experience of Lt. General Oluyede to lead and inspire the army to ensure national security and stability,” Onanuga stated.

Before he was appointed Acting Chief of Army Staff, Oluyede, a member of the 39th Regular Course, like his predecessor, served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, based in Jaji, Kaduna.

He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1992, effective from 1987. He rose to Major-General in September 2020. Since his commissioning as an officer, Oluyede has held many command positions.

Lagos youths reject endorsement of Seyi Tinubu as governor in 2027

by Folarin Kehinde November 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The coalition of Lagos indigenous youths has rejected the endorsement of Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, as Lagos State governor in 2027.

The endorsement was made by the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), which represents youth groups across the six geopolitical zones of the country.

The CONYL issued the endorsement statement on Tuesday in Owerri, Imo State, asserting that Seyi Tinubu is free to run for governor in either Osun or Imo State, where his family is reportedly from.

However, in a statement signed on their behalf by Abdul Kareem Whyte, the Lagos indigenous youths, who criticised this move, said that non-indigenes should not be allowed to govern Lagos State.

They emphasised that since 1999, no true Lagos indigene had held the position of governor, and they described the endorsement as an attempt to marginalise the state’s indigenous population.

The group further expressed concerns about the under-development of the state and the distortion of its traditional system due to successive governments.

The youths also warned the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, to be cautious of attempts to gain endorsements from traditional rulers ahead of the 2027 election.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, yesterday, spoke on his ambition of contesting for the governorship in Lagos State, saying that becoming a governor is secondary as he has not given it serious consideration.

He stated this, yesterday, during the presentation of the budget by the governor.

He said: “Of course, I have never denied the fact that I am Obasa. Rather, I have never claimed to be related to Onikoyi, Oniru, or any of the other popular Lagos families as the case may be. I can indeed never run from the fact that I am related to my Obasa family in Ojo. But I do not need local validity to contest or run. If eventually I am contesting, I will do so from Agege.”
