Okpebholo reverses self, stops free bus service, gives reason

by Folarin Kehinde November 28, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Wednesday night, reversed his approval of free bus services across the state announced earlier in the day.

Initially announced on Wednesday morning as part of the state’s welfare initiatives, the decision to suspend the service was communicated later the same day.

The initial directive, as outlined in a press statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, stated that the free bus service would cover intra-city routes within Benin metropolis and inter-city routes across the three senatorial districts.

It was intended to reflect Okpebholo’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of Edo residents.

However, a subsequent statement from Itua late Wednesday night called for the earlier announcement to be disregarded.

“The earlier statement announcing the approval of free bus services by the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, should be disregarded,” he said.

The CPS explained that the governor was being briefed on operational issues within the Edo City Transport Service, which manages the free bus initiative.

“For now, the free bus services have been placed on hold. A new decision by the governor will be communicated to the general public,” he said.

The reversal has raised questions about the operational and logistical challenges facing the programme, leaving residents awaiting further clarification on the state’s transportation policies

Earlier in an interview with The PUNCH, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Edo State chapter, Bernard Joman, had commended the governor, saying the gesture would help cushion the effect of the harsh economy on Edo commuters.

“It is a welcome development for the Edo Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress and to the people of the state. It will help to cushion the harsh economic conditions on the people and workers.

“The higher institution students have resumed and they will all be going to various destinations in the state and the free transportation will surely help them.

“I will urge the governor of the state, Senator Monday Okpehbolo, to ensure that the scheme is enduring so that the people and workers will benefit for a long time.”

Diverted Palliative Rice worth N1bn uncovered in Kano warehouse

by Folarin Kehinde November 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Agency said, on Tuesday, it uncovered a warehouse where diverted palliative rice worth N1bn was being kept.

The agency said the warehouse, located along Ring Road in the Nasarawa Local Government Area, was sealed during an operation led by its Chairman, Muhuyi Rimin-Gado.

According to the agency, bags of rice with the picture of President Bola Tinubu and the inscription ‘Ramadan Kareem’ were found in the warehouse.

Speaking to newsmen after the operation, Rimin-Gado said the facility was stockpiled with 28 trucks of the rice allegedly diverted by some individuals for re-bagging.

The chairman said the diversion of the commodity was an illegal and corrupt act which would not be condoned by the agency.

“In a nutshell, this is a clear form of corruption because this is a property meant for the public. Considering the hardship we have today, somebody has the temerity to come and start re-bagging it.

“We recovered a re-bagging machine for repacking and re-bagging rice meant for the public.

So, we are here based on investigative activities. We are armed with our search warrant, arrest warrant and court order,” Rimin-Gado said.

He said the agency would conduct a thorough investigation with a view to uncovering those behind the theft.

“For now, we have arrested one person and we will make sure we uncover those behind it and forestall these kinds of activities,” he said.

Port Harcourt refinery’ll crash fuel price, create jobs—IPMAN, PETRAON

by Folarin Kehinde November 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Stakeholders in the oil and gas industry have said the commencement of production at the Port Harcourt Refining Company will engender competition, crash the pump price of petroleum products and create jobs for Nigerians.

Recall that the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari had on Tuesday inaugurated a 60,000 barrel per day capacity plant at the old Port Harcourt Refinery Deport.

During the event, Kyari said the other sections of the refinery will be completed in due course.

The stakeholders, including the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, said this while speaking with newsmen at the sideline of resumption of production at the Port Harcourt Refinery and loading of trucks at the facility located in Eleme, Rivers State on Tuesday.

The IPMAN Chairman in Rivers State, Tekena Ikpaki, said the coming on stream of the Port Harcourt Refinery while confirming the loading of products into trucks while describing it as a remarkable achievement.

Ikpaki stated, “This will remain memorable in our lives and in our hearts because it has been long expected.

“Now it is no longer expected, it is real, it can be seen and felt. Trucks have been coming in and loading out and we have been witnessing the process.”

Asked what the operation of the Port Harcourt Refinery and the Dangote Refinery together mean for the downstream sector, he said it will engender competition and reduce the cost of petroleum products.

Tekena stated, “You know in God’s time He makes all things beautiful and this is just the best thing that will happen to Nigerians. I mean there is super competition now in the system which is in favour of the entire Nigerians.

When Dangote and the NNPCL are at loggerheads and they are competing, who enjoys the dividends? Of course you and I. So I believe that since the refinery has come on stream, Dangote is there too, it will further push down the price of products.

“Over the weekend, Dangote had announced price reduction both on the marine and trucking, coming from perhaps the resumed operation of the Port Harcourt Refinery. So I think price reduction will be experienced and it will be in our favour and the favour of Nigerians.”

While expressing the optimism that more trucks are expected to come into the facility to load products in the coming days, saying the event of Tuesday was a test run.

“Yes because it is still a test run. You know the place (Refinery) has been moribund for some time. For now, it is still hypothetical but in no distant time everything will be in its proper place and the inflow of trucks will be seen again the way it used to be, ” the Rivers State IPMAN Chairman said.

On its part, the Petroleum Product Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria said the commencement of production after five years will create job opportunities, boost the nation’s economy and bring about competition in the downstream sector.

The National Public Relations Officer of PETROAN, Joseph Obelle said this also corroborated the opinion of IPMAN that it will lead to a reduction in the price of Premium Motor Spirit also known as Petrol.

Obellei further said the association will continue to work with the management of the NNPCL, retail management and other stakeholders to ensure that products lifted at the Port Harcourt Refinery depot are well distributed to all nooks and crannies of the nation.

He commended President Bola Tinubu and the management of the NNPCL for their commitment to reviving the refinery.

He commended President Bola Tinubu and the management of the NNPCL for their commitment to reviving the refinery.

He added, “PETRAON expresses optimism for the commencement of production at the Port Harcourt Refinery.

“We are so sure that it will offer job opportunities, boost the economy of the country and trigger competition in the downstream sector which we reflect significantly to price reduction.

“We want to commend the leadership of the NNPC led by the Group CEO, Mele Kyari for demonstrating leadership with his team towards seeing the Port Harcourt Refinery becoming a reality.”

Obelle added, “Funding would have been an issue if not for the determination of Mr President. So we also commend President Bola Tinubu for releasing funds for the Port Harcourt Refinery rehabilitation”

AEDC Abuja office shut over unsettled demands

by Folarin Kehinde November 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Electricity workers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), under the Nigerian Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), partially shut down operations at the headquarters of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) on Wednesday following management’s failure to meet their demands.

The union had earlier instructed members to shut down all AEDC offices in response to the company’s inability to address the workers’ grievances.

A notice issued by the union stated, “We have reached the end of our ultimatum to the AEDC management regarding our unsettled demands. Please ensure all offices are locked down and secured until our demands are met.”

The strike was triggered by management’s failure to resolve issues, including worker casualisation and unpaid wages.

Protesters blocked the entrance to the AEDC headquarters, chanting solidarity songs and holding placards with messages like “No to casualisation” and “We demand payment of 15 months’ salaries and pension.”

However, the confrontation was short-lived. AEDC’s Head of Marketing and Communications, Adefisayo Akinsaya, downplayed the issue, stating it was a minor concern that had been resolved.

The Chief Technical Officer of AEDC and the NUEE Chairman confirmed that the strike had been called off after an agreement was reached earlier in the day.

Obasanjo lay curse on those wishing him dead

by Folarin Kehinde November 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has said he woke up to rumours of his death.

He said some people wrote on social media that he passed away midnight of Monday.

Obasanjo made this known while speaking at the commissioning of Old-Garage-Oke-Fia-Lameco road by Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke.

Adeleke had invited Obasanjo to commission the road project as part of the activities marking the governor’s second year anniversary in office.

Speaking at the event, Obasanjo dispelled the death speculation, saying he was embittered to see people wishing him dead.

The former President who spoke in Yoruba, said he was phoned by a close ally and asked to check the social media for the death rumours.

He said he quickly visited the social media through his phone and confirmed the death speculation.

Obasanjo explained that he immediately shared the death rumours to his family and friends.

He wondered why anyone could want him to die, saying that the speculators may wish him to depart surface of the earth but their wish will not come true.

The former president said anyone who thinks ill of him would not escape tragedy.

He commended Governor Adeleke for his extraordinary performance in Osun, saying his second term is sure.

Obasanjo urged Adeleke to continue to prioritise the welfare of the people.

Over 4000 policemen sue IG over delayed promotion

by Folarin Kehinde November 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

No fewer than 4,449 police officers have taken the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police to the National Industrial Court in Abuja, accusing the force of failing to decorate them with their new ranks after their promotions were approved by the Police Service Commission.

The suit hinges on the alleged refusal of the IG to implement the decision of the 19th plenary of the PSC, which granted their promotions in accordance with the PSC Act.

At the court hearing presided over by Justice R.B. Haastrup, on Tuesday, counsel for the claimants, Muka’ila Mavo, urged the court to compel the Nigeria Police Force and the IG to implement the approved promotions without further delay.

Mavo cited Section 6 (1)(a) of the Police Service Commission Act and Section 16(3)(a) of the Police Act, stating that these laws empower the PSC to handle appointments, promotions, and discipline of police officers, excluding the IG.

“The Supreme Court has also affirmed this position, granting judicial backing to the PSC’s authority over promotions and discipline within the police force,” Mavo argued.

In response, counsel for the Nigeria Police Force, ACP Isa Garba, declined to elaborate on the matter, stating that the Force Public Relations Officer would be in a better position to provide details.

Justice Haastrup adjourned the case till December 18 for further hearing.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Jami’u Abiola as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Linguistics and Foreign Matters.

The appointment takes effect from November 14, 2024.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

“This is in line with the provisions of the Certain Political and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc) Act 2008, as amended,” Akume said in the statement, signed on his behalf by Mr Segun Imohiosen, Director, Information and Public Relations in his office.

Until his appointment, Jami’u served as the Special Assistant to the President on Special Duties in the Office of the Vice President.

President Tinubu tasked the appointee to work closely with the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and bring his wealth of experience to bear in his new assignment.

Daily Trust reports that Jamiu Abiola is a son of late Chief Moshood Abiola (MKO), the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election and late Kudirat Abiola, who was assassinated during her struggle to reclaim the mandate of the annulled election.
