706 ballot boxes, others destroyed as fire razes INEC office in Delta

by Folarin Kehinde December 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has confirmed a fire incident at its office in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.

In a post on its official X handle on Tuesday, the Commission stated that about 706 ballot boxes, 50 election bags, 322 apron vests, and other items were destroyed.

According to the post, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Delta State, Mr. Etekamba Udo Umoren, confirmed the incident in a report.

The report explained that the incident occurred on Monday afternoon due to a sudden power surge following the restoration of the public power supply.

“The store’s section where petrol generators and other items were kept was completely razed.

“Items destroyed in the inferno include 706 ballot boxes, 50 election bags, 322 apron vests, three electric power generators, 140 stamps, 50 ballot box seals and assorted items such as envelopes, posters, forms and booklets.

“Fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities. The incident has been reported to the security agencies and emergency services for a thorough investigation.

“The Commission appreciates the cooperation of the Nigeria Police Force and the Delta State Fire Service for their response,” INEC stated.

JUST IN: EFCC breaks silence on owner of seized 753 duplexes and apartments in Abuja

by Folarin Kehinde December 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has addressed public speculation surrounding the ownership of a massive estate recently forfeited to the Federal Government.

The property, comprising 753 duplexes and apartments, is located in Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja.

Responding to activist Omoyele Sowore’s claims of a “cover-up,” the EFCC clarified that the forfeiture proceedings adhered strictly to Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud Act.

“The EFCC noted that investigations revealed the alleged owners disassociated themselves from the estate, prompting the court to issue a final forfeiture order.

“The allegation of a cover-up of the identity of the promoters of the Estate stands logic on the head in the sense that the proceedings for the forfeiture of the Estate were in line with Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud Act which is a civil proceeding that allows for action-in-rem rather than action-in-personam.

“The latter allows legal actions against a property and not an individual, especially in a situation of an unclaimed property. This Act allows you to take up a forfeiture proceeding against a chattel that is not a juristic person. This is exactly what the Commission did in respect of the Estate.

“The proceedings that yielded the final forfeiture of the Estate were products of actionable intelligence available to the Commission. The company flagged by our investigations denied ownership of the Estate following publications made in leading national newspapers.

“On the basis of this, the Commission approached the court for an order of final forfeiture which Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court granted on Monday, December 2, 2024,” the commission stated.

The EFCC further emphasized that substantive criminal investigations are ongoing and dismissed accusations of shielding individuals behind the estate.

“So, Aero contractors has decided to announce a Christmas initiative, we call them, pocket-friendly Christmas prices. These prices are designed to allow Nigerians to travel to all our destinations without paying too much.

“And this is in the spirit of giving, which is the spirit of Christmas. We believe that as a company, this is just a very old history of understanding its customers. We believe it’s time for us to give back to our customers.

“Our prices will start from 80,000 to all of our destinations, and we intend to make it affordable to flying public. And this is to allow the flying public/families to meet their loved ones during this Christmas season.”

JUST IN: Northern youth groups barricade National Assembly over tax reform bill

by Folarin Kehinde December 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Some youths from the 19 northern states on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, staged a protest at the entrance of the National Assembly where they warned critics of the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibril, to desist from attacking him over the tax reform bill.

The Deputy Senate President had in November presided over plenary when heads of relevant government agencies and tax reform experts briefed senators on the merits and methodology of the bills.

Barau during the session, said that the experts, including the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Tax Reform, Taiwo Oyedele, should be allowed to educate the senators and Nigerians on the legislation.

The protesting youths who bore placards with various inscriptions described the Deputy Senate President as the “Sardauna of our era.”

Some of the placards read, “Senator Barau: The Sardauna of our era”,” Senator Barau is the new leader of the North”, “Stop attacking Senator Barau”, “Leave Senator Barau alone”, ” Senator Barau: The pro-masses lawmaker.”

They said Barau remains the best Senator in the North, given his sponsorship of the North West Development Commission bill.

A former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Comrade Tijjani Kabiru Mohammed said Barau has neither supported nor kicked against the Tax Reform Bills; instead, he pushed for the sensitization of Nigerians.

Over 50,000 Kogi residents HIV/AIDS positive – official

by Folarin Kehinde December 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Acting Executive Secretary, Kogi State Agency for the Control of Aids, Ibrahim Anate, has declared that no fewer than 50,000 people are currently living with HIV/AIDs in the state.

Anate disclosed this in an interactive session with journalists during a road Walk in commemoration of the 2024 World AIDS Day in Lokoja, the state capital, on Monday.

The walk was organised by the Centre for Integrated Health Programmes, in collaboration with the Kogi State Agency for the Control of Aids.

In his remarks, Anate said, “About 50,000 people are living with HIV presently out of which 36,066 are presently on treatment in Kogi State.

“We are seriously fighting the scourge and we are giving the awareness to all the community and the hard-to-reach areas of the awareness of HIV in Kogi State.”

He added that the state government, under Alhaji Usman Ododo, is striving to see that people who are living with HIV AIDs are on treatment and pregnant women who are HIV positive deliver negative babies.

“The current administration is also striving to ensure that people who are positive in Kogi State will turn to negative. The government is seriously working hard by providing support to the Ministry of Health, and KOSACA to see that we take the campaign to the very hard-to-reach community and the community at large in Kogi State,” he added.

He explained that with the current security challenges in some parts of the state, some HIV patients find it difficult to access treatment.

Anate, however, appealed to Ododo to sign the Anti Stigma HIV Law, which was recently passed by the state House of Assembly.

“When the governor ascents to this law, people that are HIV positive can have the confidence to come out and declare their status. Many can’t do this because of the stigmatization in the society”, he added.
