Expect better economy next year, Edun assures Nigerians

by Folarin Kehinde December 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigerians yesterday got an assurance of a better economy next year from the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun.

The minister expressed optimism that the country was gradually moving away from factors that has impacted negatively on its economy and the citizenry.

Edun gave the assurance at a meeting with the House of Representatives Joint Committee on National Planning and Economic Development and Finance on the proposed N47.9 trillion 2025 Budget.

The minister gave an overview of next year’s Appropriation Bill.

He said that going by the projection on increased revenue next year and as other measures being taken by the government, there are indications that the country was moving away from factors that had in the past impacted negatively on the Nigerian economy and affected its people.

Edun said the signs show positive indications of a positive performance of the country’s economy in 2025.

He said: “We do have market pricing and foreign exchange that has resulted in a situation whereby upwards of five per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been lost to plurality of factors benefiting just a few and created long-sighted incentives against growth and investment.”

The minister assured that as government revenue goes up, it will help lower debt servicing and borrowing because as the economy improves, it will become more competitive.

He said: “The deficit of that increase which we hope to achieve less but right now we are assuming is about 9.3 trillion naira in new borrowings and the debt service of about two trillion naira.

“In a nutshell, that backdrop gives you the optimism that the 2025 budget estimates, particularly the one on revenue, will be achieved and the economy will be strong. It will fast up to an inclusive and sustainable growth”.

Chairman of the House Committee on National Planning and Economic Development, Ibrahim Ayokunle (APC, Ogun) asked the minister to give an appraisal of the economy.

Ayokunle said: “But briefly, as we have said, what is the state of our economy, number one, as in our finances. Then number two, in terms of our revenue so far with the projections we have for 2025.

BREAKING: Ex-Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello to spend Christmas, New in Kuje Prison

by Folarin Kehinde December 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Federal Capital Territory High Court has ordered the remand of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in the Kuje correctional centre until January 29, 2025.

The erstwhile governor’s trial has also been adjourned till February 25, 2025.

The development comes after the court rejected Bello’s bail application, citing procedural irregularities in the filing of the application.

According to Justice Maryanne Anenih, the bail application was premature as it was filed before Bello was present in court or in custody.

Bello, alongside two others, is facing charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N110 billion money laundering case.

The defendants, in case number CR/7781, face charges of conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and unlawful possession of property.

According to the EFCC, the former governor is accused of misappropriating state funds to acquire several properties, including No. 35 Danube Street in Maitama District, Abuja (worth N950 million), No. 1160 Cadastral Zone C03 in Gwarimpa II District, Abuja (worth N100 million), and No. 2 Justice Chukwudifu Oputa Street in Asokoro, Abuja (worth N920 million).

North should wait till 2031 for Presidency, Akume declares

by Folarin Kehinde December 9, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has asked northern political bigwigs warming up to contest the 2027 presidency to shelve their ambition and wait till 2031 when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would have completed his second term.

Akume specifically asked former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to perish the thought of taking over the presidential villa in 2027, saying if God wants him to be president, he can win an election at the age of 90.

Akume, who spoke on Sunday while featuring on a TVC programme on politics, said it is still the turn of the South to produce a president in 2027.

The SGF, a former governor of Benue State, said President Tinubu has not lost goodwill among Nigerians as a result of tax reform bills and other strategic economic decisions taken within the last 17 months of his administration, and expressed optimism that the president would run Nigeria for 8 years.

He defended the tax reform bills as well-envisioned proposed legislations that would help the country when passed by the National Assembly.

He said, “President Tinubu as a southerner, should be allowed to have a second term, meaning that those eyeing the Presidency from the North in 2027 should look beyond that year by waiting till 2031.

“If it is the will of God for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to be President of Nigeria, even at the age of 90 years, he can get it. But he and other northerners eyeing the office now should look beyond 2027.”

Akume appealed to Nigerians to allow the bills to scale through the required legislative processes, saying, “They are well-envisioned for Nigeria and Nigerians.”

Whether you have been busy preparing for the Year end business, the festive season or just simply enjoying the sights and sounds of the season, let’s remember that the heart of Christmas is found in the connections we share and the kindness we offer.”

Meanwhile, the Managing Director/CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc Dupe Olusola explained that in the spirit of Christmas, transcorp Hilton will be offering their services at discounted rates to her teeming audiences to enjoy the season to its fullest.

families to come here. We want to give discounts to people to bring their families here and
enjoy the leisure.

“So, you know, you can actually shop for gifts, beads, you know, nice things that are locally made. So, we’re really trying to promote more of Nigeria and more of Africa.

“We’re going to finish very strong, we’re still happy about the numbers that we’ve achieved so far. Our occupancy, we have at over 83%, you know, for a 677-room hotel. That is exceptionally good.
It means that almost every day of the week we are busy. In terms of our profitability as well, we have
very strong numbers.

“But every year, you know, we strategize and say how can we do things differently to make sure
that we’re running efficiently as a business. We’re keeping an eye on our costs. And we’re being
very innovative and ensuring that we’re bringing new strategies.

“We acquired more land. And now what we’re doing is working on a redesign to ensure that we
can actually deliver the 315 rooms. But there’s so much that we’re looking at.

“In addition to the event center, we’re also excited about actually expanding here. Because one of the things we’ve seen, like I said, we’re doing 83%, which means that almost all our rooms, we’re having to turn back guests. So, now we want to focus very strongly on actually building an extension here.”

“Pass property ownership law for women” Foundation charges lawmakers

by Folarin Kehinde December 8, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Non- Governmental Organizations, ACE charity has called for constitutional laws, such as Land Reform Act, to promote property ownership for women.

The Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officer at ACE Charity, Vivian Ejike made this suggestion in an interview with pressmen at the round table discussion themed,”Transforming the Business Landscape For Rural Women through Inclusive Economic Development,” held in Abuja.

She explained that women face barriers such as inequality and limited access to resources, including land emphasizing that
cultural and religious settings often confine women to household duties, limiting their economic participation.

She discussed the role of government policies in promoting women’s economic participation.

According to her communities need to legislate property rights for women to ensure equal access to resources adding that representation of women in political positions is crucial to address women’s economic challenges effectively.

“The House of Representative have what it takes to pass some laws that can actually alter the fate of women in a positive way.For instance, land reforms. I don’t know if there’s a Land Reform Act, but that’s something that we can actually do, or the government can take up, to be able to create laws that promote the property ownership of women.

“ I think there are some laws that are against property ownership, and so we need the government to be able to set laws in place that women can hold, both at different levels. So we also need these communities where they are to be able to give property rights to women.

“So we need it to be legislated, passed into law that women can own lands, women can own properties, women can have equal access to resources to women. So we do believe that if it is something that the government can actually pass into law, then it will also help women to be able to benefit more in the economic participation.

“Also, I think it is necessary for women to be better represented in politics, not just for participation, but also representation, because sometimes the men can only partially give information about what women are going through but if there are women representing us at the helm of affairs, they can say for sure what the problem is when it comes to women accessing economic opportunities,”she said

Ejike while discussing the organisation economic program called “Women Microcredit Program” which was aimed at economically empowering rural women in Nigeria, explained that program provides interest-free loans to women entrepreneurs, with 75% of rural women and 80% of food producers being female.

According to her, ACE Charity addresses economic issues through digital training, financial management education, and formal banking access, leading to a high savings rate among participants.

She added that over 500 women have directly benefited, with 2,000 indirect beneficiaries, and the program aims to expand its reach.

Ejike stated that the program started in 2021 is to address the critical issue of access to finance for rural women.

“The core of the program is the women microcredit project, providing small, interest-free loans to rural women entrepreneurs. The program aims to engage various sectors, including policy makers, GBV survivors, and other women-focused programs to foster inclusive conversations,” she noted.

She added that government should ensure gender mainstreaming in in state budget.

Afe Babalola: Amazon lists Dele Farontimi’s book on Nigerian judiciary as number one bestseller worldwide

by Folarin Kehinde December 5, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Global tech and retail giant Amazon has listed a Nigerian-themed book as its number one bestseller in global politics after its author was arrested on the orders of a controversial lawyer and businessman.

Dele Farotimi’s ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System’ surged to the first position on Amazon Thursday morning, after trending starting Wednesday afternoon, Peoples Gazette checks showed.

The demand for Mr Farotimi’s on global platforms like Amazon followed a similar rush to bookstores across Nigeria, where citizens were curious to learn its content.

The global interest followed Mr Farotimi’s arrest on the orders of Afe Babalola, a 93-year-old senior Nigerian lawyer who corruption allegations have long dogged. Nigerian-themed rarely make Amazon’s bestselling chart, and Mr Farotimi’s book beat globally-acclaimed works like ‘Why Nations Fail’.

Mr Farotimi, a retired lawyer based in Lagos, used the book to criticise corruption in the Nigerian judiciary and specifically namechecked Mr Babalola as one of the top offenders.

Mr Babalola “compromised the Supreme Court and the remaining semblance of integrity it might have had,” Mr Farotimi wrote while narrating a case in which the nonagenarian lawyer approached “the Supreme Court and got that court to swim in the sewer of corruption and shameful self-abnegation.”

The book, published in July 2024, buttressed a longstanding public suspicion that Mr Babalola was among those befouling the Nigerian judicial by corrupting judges with cash and material bribes to influence judges from lower courts to the Supreme Court.

The book saw low sales following its publication until Mr Farotimi was seized by armed policemen in Lagos on Tuesday morning and subsequently transported to Ado Ekiti, about 300 kilometres northeast of the nation’s commercial capital, where Mr Babalola is best known as the largest employer of labour.

Following his initial arraignment on Wednesday morning in Ekiti, a judge remanded Mr Farotimi in custody pending a bail hearing on December 10. The police said the book “was likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or disturb the public peace,” according to the charge sheet seen by The Gazette.

Mr Babalola has long faced public criticism as one of the senior lawyers notorious for their ability to influence court judgements across the country, eroding public trust in the Nigerian judiciary. He has often denied the allegations, but some judges have lamented how some lawyers were known for their ability to undermine the judicial system by buying judgements. He was not specifically mentioned in the allegations by retired Justice Dattijo Muhammad.

The detention has sparked public outrage, with Nigerians demanding Mr Farotimi’s release while raining invective against Mr Babalola, who is widely adjudged the most influential private citizen in Ekiti State.

Journalists locked out from covering Zamfara gov’s 2025 budget presentation

by Folarin Kehinde December 5, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Security operatives barred journalists from covering the 2025 budget presentation by Governor Dauda Lawal at the Zamfara State House of Assembly in Gusau on Thursday, sparking outrage among media professionals.

The journalists, who arrived at the Assembly complex as early as 9 am were reportedly ordered to leave by security personnel just as the governor made his way into the chamber.

Efforts by the governor’s media aide, Sulaiman Bala Idris, to mediate were rebuffed by the security officers, who stood their ground despite appeals to allow the journalists to perform their constitutional duties.

“Please take it easy. I know how you feel, but I assure you we will rectify the issue,” Idris told the visibly frustrated journalists.

However, only Channels Television and TVC reporters were granted access to cover the event, further fuelling suspicions among the excluded press corps.

A source within the Assembly complex, who spoke on condition of anonymity, attributed the move to a potential quorum issue among lawmakers.

“Blocking journalists was a deliberate decision because only a few members were present in the chamber, and they did not meet the quorum required to officially receive the governor for the budget presentation,” the source alleged.

Of the 24 Assembly members, only a fraction reportedly attended the session, raising questions about the validity of the proceedings.

The exclusion of journalists has drawn criticism from media practitioners, who have called for greater respect for press freedom and transparency in government activities.

Efforts to reach the Assembly leadership for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
