FG to spend N1.9b to fuel State House generators in 2025

by Folarin Kehinde December 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

It appears there is no hope for an improved power supply to Nigerian households in 2025, as the federal government has made a provision of N1,989,579,379 to fuel State House generators during the course of the year.

This is higher than the amount budgeted for the same item in 2024 (N37,959,406), 2023 (N30,678,552), 2022 (N30,678,552), and 2021 (N45,678,552) combined by a staggering 1,272 per cent and 5,143 per cent higher than the N37,959,406 budgeted for the same item last year.

This high budget to fuel generators at the State House is indicative of a government that has lost hope in its power sector.

Power, as important as it is, has been a major challenge for Nigeria over the years, even though the country has made significant investments in the sector between 2021 and 2024. The budget for the power sector grew by 129.42 per cent, from N133.479 billion in 2020 to N306.23 billion in 2022, with a focus on capital expenditures for infrastructural development. In 2023, the government budgeted N258.494 billion for the power sector, with N251.609 billion allocated for capital expenditure.

It is estimated that between 2021 and 2024, Nigeria spent around N1.2 trillion on the power sector.

However, this has not resulted in significant improvements in power supply to the citizens, as homes and businesses are subjected to frequent blackouts.

In 2024 alone, the national power grid collapsed 12 times, an average of once every month.

Many businesses are shutting down, while others are finding their way out of the country because they can no longer bear the heavy costs of generating their own power.

Recently, the Director-General of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Olusola Obadimu, raised the alarm that businesses in the country suffer an annual $29 billion revenue loss due to inadequate power supply.

The sector is said to be fraught with challenges such as inadequate power supply, unreliable energy infrastructure, and high electricity tariffs.

These challenges not only hamper the growth of industries but also undermine the ability of the country to attract investments and create jobs.

It is, however, heartening to note that in the 2025 budget proposal, a total sum of N2,086,790,002,565 has been earmarked for the Ministry of Power, of which a princely sum of N2,076,305,541,394 was set aside for capital projects.

Switch Off Your Light To Manage Electricity Bill, Tinubu Advises Nigerians

by Folarin Kehinde December 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has advised Nigerians to step up their management skill in reducing electricity bills.

“It’s not negative to learn to manage. You learn to control your electricity bill, switch off the light, let’s learn to manage,” Tinubu said on Monday in a chat with reporters at his Bourdillon residence in the highbrow Ikoyi area of Lagos State.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain also said he does not believe in price control and he won’t go that path. “I don’t believe in price control, we will work hard to supply the market,” he said.

After his inauguration in May 2023, Tinubu, former Lagos governor, energy costs skyrocketed, especially with the removal of petrol subsidy and electricity tariff hikes. Petrol prices more than quadrupled, soaring from less than N200 per litre to over N1,100 in many parts of the country. The naira also took a nosedive, wobbling from around N700/$ to N1,600.

On April 3, 2024, the electricity regulator raised the tariff for customers said to be under the Band A classification, with customers now paying N225 kilowatt per hour from N66, a development that has been heavily criticised by many Nigerians, considering the immediacy of the tariff hike and the current hardship in the land.

Food and commodity inflation have skyrocketed as Nigerians battle what can pass for the worst cost of living crisis since the country’s independence over six decades ago but Tinubu has insisted that his reforms are necessary to set the country on the path of prosperity.

President Tinubu wins 2024 Man of the Year award

by Folarin Kehinde December 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu has been named as The Will newspaper’s choice for 2024 Man of the Year.

The newspaper stated that the decision to honour President Tinubu was unanimous among its editorial team.

According to them, the president’s reform policies over the past year have profoundly impacted Nigerians in ways unseen in recent history.

The newspaper wrote in its editorial: “President Tinubu’s reform policies in the past one year have significantly impacted every Nigerian negatively, old or young in business, employed or unemployed as never before in the country’s recent history.

“Government’s removal of subsidy and floating of the local currency, the Naira delivered a big blow to the already fragile economy as the resultant increase in fuel prices drove logistics and the prices of food items through the roof.

“Nigeria’s annual inflation rate jumped to 34.60 percent in November, from 33.88 percent recorded in October, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in its latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report last Monday.

“According to the Bureau, on a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate was 6.40 percentage points higher than the 28.20 percent rate recorded in November 2023.

“This shows that the year-on-year headline inflation rate increased in November 2024, compared to the same month in the preceding year of November 2023.

For the yearly average Consumer Price Index, CPI, the result shows an increase. It said the percentage change in the average CPI for the twelve months ending November 2024 over the average for the previous twelve-month period was 32.77 percent, showing 8.76 per cent points increase, compared to 24.01 per cent recorded in November 2023. The yearly Urban/ Rural inflation rate is also high.

“In November 2024, the urban inflation rate was 35.07 percent, indicating 9.62 percentage points higher compared to the 25.45 percent recorded in November 2023. Rural inflation rate average in November 2024 was 30.71 percent on a year-on-year basis. This was 8.00 percentage points higher, compared to the 22.71 percent recorded in November 2023.

According to the Bureau, the rise in food inflation on a year-on-year basis was caused by increases in prices of Yam, Water Yam, Coco Yam, etc (Potatoes, Yam & Other Tubers Class), Guinea Corn, Maize Grains, Rice, etc (Bread and Cereals Class), Beer, Pinto (Tobacco Class), and Palm Oil, Vegetable Oil, etc (Oil and Fats Class).

“On a month-on-month basis, the Food inflation rate in November 2024 was 2.98 percent, which shows a 0.05 percentage point increase compared to the 2.94 percent recorded in October 2024.

For the past one year, therefore, Nigerians across all social strata, business and professional calling, have felt the pain and hardship of the ongoing reforms.

“Little wonder, many of them took to social media to deploy the moniker T-Pain (Tinubu Pain) in describing the harsh realities of government’s reform policies, though his media handlers rechristened it Temporary Pain while National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, says it should actually be T-Gain (Tinubu Gains).”

Multiple eyewitness accounts indicated that the stampede occurred when participants rushed to gain access to the event’s venue organised by Silekunola and a broadcaster with the Agidigbo FM, Oriyomi Hamzat.

An eyewitness at the scene of the event, who craved anonymity, said in a video, “Oriyomi Hamzat said he wanted 5,000 participants but because we were not organised, that was why the situation got to this. We were not even up to 5,000 participants.”

“Rather than attend to us very well, they wanted to fight us. We just lost one child who has been taken to the University College Hospital,” said another participant (names withheld) who claimed to have lost a child.

An Administrative Officer of Patnas Hospital, Basorun, where some of the victims were admitted, Olufeyemi Tolulope, stated, “The affected children were brought in some minutes past 8 am. Six children were brought into the hospital out of which five died while the other one is recuperating.

“We were told that the deceased fainted at the venue of the event. We were able to rescue one while the remaining five died. The surviving child has been discharged and released to her parents.

“One of the parents of the deceased, who was sighted at the hospital premises wailing, said, “I did not bargain for what happened to me. We slept together at home yesterday (Tuesday) not knowing that it would be the last time. My daughter is not dead. Please doctor wake her up.”

by Folarin Kehinde December 16, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kemi Badenoch, controversial leader of the British Conservative Party, has opened up about her faith.

Badenoch in a now-viral interview with The Free Press, a US media outfit, revealed that she no longer believes in God.

According to her, the most important factor is what individuals do with their belief or lack of belief.

“I don’t believe in God anymore. But I am not an atheist, I am agnostic. I used to believe in God very much but now I describe myself as a cultural Christian.

“I don’t think it matters if people believe in God or not. What matters is what they do with the belief or the lack of it,” she said.

Born Olukemi Adegoke to Nigerian Yoruba parents in the UK, Badenoch’s last name changed after she married a Scottish banker.

She returned to Nigeria, where she grew up, and finally departed for the UK when she turned 16.
