by Folarin Kehinde December 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Army has apprehended a 25-year-old woman, Shamsiyya Ahadu, who is accused of supplying arms and ammunition to notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji.

Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, the Coordinator of the Joint Media Coordination Centre, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Sunday, December 29.

He said Ahadu, along with her accomplice, Ahmed Husaini, a motorcyclist, was captured in the Badarawa area of Shinkafi Local Government Area on December 28.

According to him, troops reportedly seized 764 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and six magazines intended for delivery to Turji’s camp.

He noted that the operation, conducted by troops of Sector 2 Joint Task Force North West, Operation Fansan Yamma, was based on intelligence regarding terrorist logistics movements between Kware and Badarawa communities,a dding that both suspects are under investigation.

Turji, a notorious terrorist operating in Zamfara and neighbouring states, had recently threatened reprisals following arrests of his suspected associates, claiming they were innocent community members.

The army expressed gratitude for public support and urged citizens to continue providing credible intelligence to help eliminate terrorist activities in the region.

Federal Government spends N1.4 billion on rehabilitation of terrorists

by Folarin Kehinde December 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has allocated approximately N1.4 billion for the rehabilitation of repentant terrorists and the establishment of terrorism trial centres over the past year and a half.

Following former President Muhammadu Buhari’s assent to the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Bill on May 12, 2022, the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) was established.

In December 2022, the government announced plans to build two disarmament, deradicalisation, rehabilitation, and reintegration centres for former Boko Haram members and other terrorist factions.

Punch reports that Rear Admiral Yem Musa (retd.), the coordinator of the NCTC, confirmed to the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence that N2.4bn would be allocated to these centres as part of the NCTC’s N3.8bn capital projects for 2023.

According to data from the GovSpend platform, between December 2022 and May 2024, the Ministry of Justice expended a total of N1.4bn on these rehabilitation centres and the renovation of facilities for terrorism trials.

This included N612m spent in March 2023 to renovate abandoned structures for terrorism trials and build dormitories for the rehabilitation of repentant terrorists under Operation Safe Corridor.

In 2024, an additional N179m was spent on similar projects, including the procurement of equipment to aid terrorism case prosecutions.

Meanwhile, the NCTC recently announced that it had secured 325 convictions during the Phase 5 and Phase 6 trials at the Kainji Detention Facility. Convictions ranged from the death penalty to life imprisonment, with sentences depending on the severity of the crimes committed.

Despite this, concerns have arisen over the secretive nature of these trials. Security experts and civil society organizations have raised questions about why such trials are conducted behind closed doors, given the gravity of the crimes involved.

Some argue that transparency is critical for public trust, while others believe that secrecy is necessary for security reasons. The government has yet to provide a clear explanation for this approach.

JUST IN: Flight with 181 people on board crashes in South Korea

by Folarin Kehinde December 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

In a devastating accident at Muan International Airport in South Korea on Sunday morning, nearly all of the 181 people aboard a Jeju Air flight are presumed dead after the aircraft veered off the runway and struck a concrete barrier.

Authorities confirmed that only two survivors were rescued from the wreckage, both of whom sustained serious injuries.

Footage of the crash shows the Boeing 737-800 skidding along the runway before crashing into the barrier and bursting into flames. Thick plumes of smoke could be seen rising into the air, with parts of the aircraft flying off upon impact.

The plane had been attempting to land after a flight from Bangkok when a reported bird strike and adverse weather conditions led to a failure in the landing gear, causing the plane to veer off course.

Local fire officials believe that the bird strike and weather conditions were likely contributing factors, though a full investigation is underway. The crash has shocked South Korea, with this incident potentially becoming the country’s worst domestic civil aviation disaster.

Jeju Air, a popular low-cost carrier, expressed deep apologies in a statement, acknowledging the severity of the crash and pledging to prioritize the management of the incident.

The airline also confirmed that the aircraft involved had been in operation for 15 years and had no history of accidents.

While most passengers on the flight were South Korean nationals, there were also two Thai nationals onboard.

The man Wike: The many misconceptions and how he saved Southeast region from ravaging terrorist infiltration

by Folarin Kehinde December 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Ezemuo Wike means many things to different people. Among Ndigbo, Wike is mostly seen as a villain or someone who denied their son Peter Gregory Obi the opportunity to be elected Nigerian President in 2022. Most Igbos hold the view that Wike is anti-Igbo. But is Wike anti-Igbo? Did he save the southeast region from what could have been a devastating infiltration by a ruthless invading terrorist group, disguised as herdsmen? The answer is capital and loudest YES. Hard to believe, you’d say!

It is hardly known in most quarters that Wike saved Southeast Nigeria from a devastating planned infiltration of that axis by a terrorist group, disguised as herdsmen. The personality of Wike reminds me that villains have their virtues too. He is no saint, but he is definitely not the demon many brand him.

Those who know Wike know he wears the face of a Lion; roars, and acts like one. He is a man who has defeated the pangs of fear. Some would even say Wike has many things in common with Donald Trump – Blunt, assertive, impetuous, stubborn and untamed when he sets out on a mission. He loves those he loves and would do everything to protect them. Wike’s assertiveness has earned him fewer friends and more enemies, perhaps. Within the political space, Wike could be said and rightly too to be the most misconstrued political figure in Nigeria today. Amid threats and opposition, the man Wike talks tough; hardly apologetic. He remains defiant.

As an Igbo man, I can say that Barr. Nyesom Wike deserves his flowers from the Igbos if only they knew the role he played during the infamous tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Former President Muhammadu Buhari hated Wike for a reason. That reason was the fact that Wike was a huge hindrance to a mission that had been planned and sealed for execution. During President Muhammadu Buhari’s era, the invading killer-herdsmen have mapped out their infiltration strategy. The plan was to do whatever that could be done to hasten an unholy occupation of the Southeast and South-South Regions. South West was relatively safer, partly because the stakeholders of the region knew the plan and made adequate conventional and nonconventional arrangements to secure that region.

Furthermore, the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari was made possible through the efforts of key political figures from South West, particularly President Ahmed Bola Tinubu. That largely guaranteed the Southwest safety.
Benue State was targeted as a feasible route for this infiltration. What did Wike do? Wike hurriedly formed a strong alliance with former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom and the then Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. This alliance was majorly to counter the planned infiltration cum occupation of the target regions (South East and South-South). A move that Samuel Ortom is still bearing the brunt to date.
Unlike Benue and Enugu States, Rivers State enjoyed better revenue inflow. Wike made available all the necessary resources that were needed in that subtle war of infiltration. Wike was the lone oak tree that defied the raging storm at that moment. Wike may be a villain, but his vision, political flexibility and behind-the-scenes activities are great political virtues that cannot be overlooked by any political pundit.

Ndigbo, need I say again, Wike deserves his flowers from us. Villains have their virtues too!

Academy for Creating Enterprise awards cash prizes for business growth in West Africa

by Folarin Kehinde December 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Academy for Creating Enterprise ACE, a faith-based non-governmental organisation has awarded different categories of cash prizes to its members across West Africa.

The Academy based in Utah State, USA operates chapters in different locations known as stake centers in the Philippines, the Americas, Nigeria, Ghana and other West African countries.

The organisation, working with other partners, including the Self-Reliance Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has over ninety thousand members across Africa, Asia and the Americas. The Academy has a thematic objective of helping members start, grow and sustain their businesses by offering them tested business principles called the “25 Rules of Thumb”.

Aside from that, members have an online business directory where they can post their businesses and their profiles to enable them to network with other members around the world.

Members meet once every month in their respective chapters to discuss these business principles. Each chapter is overseen by a chapter presidency which consists of a president, seven vice presidents as well as a chapter secretary.

Recently, the academy awarded different cash prizes running into millions of naira to beneficiaries across Nigeria and Ghana. Speaking during the award-giving ceremony of Lugbe Stake Chapter, the Abuja Nigeria Lugbe Stake

President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Barr. Obinna Alaribe charged members to deploy the knowledge they acquired from the academy to their business growth. He also enjoined the cash prize winners to ensure judicious use of the funds in starting or growing their businesses.

The Lugbe Stake Chapter Secretary of the Academy, Light Shedrack on his part, reiterated the need for members of the academy to become self-reliant by ensuring that they integrate the 25 rules of the thumb in managing their businesses.

“Research has revealed that some businesses, if not most wind down within the early stage of their operations. We have seen businesses that looked promising going down within two to five years of their operations and naturally, one would begin to wonder what went wrong. The academy bridges this gap by offering its members tested and trusted business principles that serve as business guides. Some of those business principles commonly known in the academy as rules of thumb include the need for good record-keeping.

Others include the principle of being nice later, sell what the market will buy, start small and think big, pay yourself a livable salary, don’t eat your inventory and work on your business 10 hours a day are some of the success-oriented business principles the academy teaches”

Speaking further on the academy’s activities, Mr. Light stated that the academy does not charge for registration or participation.

“Anyone who desires to become a member can do so. It is targeted at people who have existing businesses. However, those who desire to start their own business can also become members. In Abuja, we have three chapters in Lugbe, Wuse and Kubwa. Members meet once every month to share ideas and brace their knowledge of the rules of the thumb.

Mr. Shedrack said that members can also pitch for cash prizes and win if they meet the required criteria.

NCC Issues Pre-Disconnection Notice to Exchange Telecommunications Limited

by Folarin Kehinde December 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced its approval for the disconnection of Exchange Telecommunications Limited (Exchange) from MTN Nigeria Communications Limited (MTN) due to unpaid interconnect charges.

In a public notice dated Friday, December 27, 2024, the NCC stated that Exchange was previously notified of the application for disconnection and was given an opportunity to respond and present its case. Upon review, the Commission concluded that Exchange had insufficient justification for its non-payment of the charges.

The NCC granted MTN Nigeria permission to disconnect Exchange Telecommunications in accordance with Section 100 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and the Guidelines for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators, 2012.

MTN Nigeria will discontinue voice and data traffic through Exchange Telecommunications within five days of the notice. Alternative channels will be used to ensure continuity in interconnectivity with other network service providers.

Additionally, the disconnection will remain in effect until the Commission determines otherwise.

Furthermore, the NCC’s directive underscores its commitment to enforcing compliance within Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. Customers relying on Exchange for interconnection to MTN services may face disruptions until the issue is resolved.

The Commission emphasized the importance of adhering to financial and operational obligations to foster stability in the telecommunications ecosystem.
