Heavily drunk Policeman releases 13 suspects to Celebrate New Year

by Folarin Kehinde January 3, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A drunk police officer in Zambia freed 13 suspects from custody so that they could go and celebrate the new year, officials say.

A report by the BBC said detective inspector Titus Phiri was arrested after releasing the suspects from Leonard Cheelo police station in the capital, Lusaka, before running away himself.

The 13 detainees were accused of crimes such as assault, robbery and burglary.

They are all currently on the run and a manhunt has been launched to find them.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said that Phiri, “in a state of intoxication, forcibly seized cell keys” from constable Serah Banda on New Year’s Eve.

“Subsequently, Detective Inspector Phiri unlocked both the male and female cells and instructed the suspects to leave, stating they were free to cross over into the new year,” he said.

“Out of the 15 suspects in custody, 13 escaped. Following the incident, the officer fled the scene.”

Mr Phiri has not yet commented on the allegations.

Reacting to the incident, former presidential spokesperson and lawyer Dickson Jere wrote on Facebook: “I keep laughing each time I picture the scenario – comical! But then, I remembered a similar incident in 1997.”

On New Year’s Eve in 1997, the late, controversial High Court Judge Kabazo Chanda ordered the release of 53 suspects, some of whom were deemed dangerous by the police.

Mr Chanda was annoyed that the suspects had been arrested as long ago as 1992, but had not yet appeared in court.

“Justice delayed, is justice denied,” he said.

Betrayed: Tinubu’s refusal to honour Seyi’s pact with us disappointing – Nnamdi Kanu’s family

by Folarin Kehinde January 3, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

“The truth is that Nigerian courts cannot, will not and do not have both the substantive and procedural jurisdiction to try him. His detention is without the backing of any known law in Nigeria or elsewhere in the world.

“It’s a shame that those who claim to be men of honour cannot honour their word.”

The family of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, have expressed disappointment over the failure of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to honour an alleged agreement between his son Seyi , and the family before the 2023 general election.

Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, in a statement, claimed that Seyi with the approval of his father, personally met with him in Abuja shortly before the election, where both parties entered into agreement concerning Kanu.

According to him, it was agreed that IPOB would not bycott the polls on the condition that Tinubu would release Kanu if elected President.

Prince Emmanuel expressed disappointment that nearly two years after the emergence of Tinubu as President, his brother (Kanu), has continued to languish in detention despite the fact that the presiding Judge, Justice Binta Nyako, had since recused herself from the matter.

He said it was disappointing that those who claimed to be honourable, failed to keep their words.

The statement read:”Before the last election, I received a message from an ex-governor that Seyi the son of President Tinubu wanted to see me. I agreed to meet with him on the condition that the overriding priority and hence the fulcrum of our discussion will be the release of my brother. The meeting was held in Abuja in the presence of another individual whom I asked along to witness the deliberations and if need be provide independent verification should the need arise.

“Seyi confirmed to me that his father sanctioned the meeting and that I should consider any agreement we reach as binding on the then candidate Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“In good faith we agreed that I shall relay the outcome to my brother to reinforce the long held tradition of IPOB not interfering with the conduct of elections, either through boycott or any other form of civil disobedience. This understanding was duly communicated to my brother and he reaffirmed his commitment not to stop the elections or order any boycott.

“When President Tinubu as a candidate visited Owerri during his campaign, he too reiterated his commitment to facilitate the release of my brother if elected. We took his public statement as a tacit reaffirmation of the understanding I reached with his son Seyi.

“At the end, IPOB did not call for election boycott despite having the capacity to do so. IPOB also made sure that discordant voices urging election boycott were overcome because election boycotts would not reflect well on the reputation of a global movement that prides itself on adherence to democratic tenets.

“It therefore, defies logic that nearly two years after President Tinubu assumed the mantle of leadership in Nigeria, my brother is still in detention despite not having any charge against him. It’s been over three months now that Justice Binta Nyako recused herself from the case yet no new judge has been assigned the case.

“This is on top of the fact that Appeal Court had earlier discharged him of the sham charges and ordered his release which the previous regime of Buhari declined to obey.

“Supreme Court determination that his bail ought not to have been revoked has been ignored by the courts and the government. The latest insult is that Abuja courts of all persuasion are no longer willing to determine the case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on merit but are rather relying on ludicrous and inapplicable technicalities to stall the timely determination of his cases.

“The truth is that Nigerian courts cannot, will not and do not have both the substantive and procedural jurisdiction to try him. His detention is without the backing of any known law in Nigeria or elsewhere in the world.

“It’s a shame that those who claim to be men of honour cannot honour their word.”

Nigerians to pay more as Telcos propose 100% tariff hike

by Folarin Kehinde January 3, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

“According to Toriola, the proposed tariff hike is necessary for the sustainability of the industry, which has been facing significant financial pressures due to rising operational costs.”

Nigerian telecommunications companies have proposed a 100 per cent increase in their tariffs, pending approval from the government.

The proposal, which has been submitted to the Nigerian Communications Commission, aims to address rising operational costs, including inflation and increased service delivery expenses.

The disclosure was made by the Chief Executive Officer, MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday.

However, the CEO expressed that it remains uncertain whether the Nigerian Communications Commission—the telecom regulator, will approve the proposal.

According to Toriola, the proposed tariff hike is necessary for the sustainability of the industry, which has been facing significant financial pressures due to rising operational costs.

“We’ve put forward requests of approximately 100 per cent tariff increases to regulators. I doubt they’re going to approve that quantum of increases because they are very, very sensitive to the current economic situation in the country,” Toriola said.

Despite the challenges, Toriola expressed optimism that regulators would make the right decision, taking into account the realities of the sector.

The CEO emphasised that the focus is on ensuring the long-term sustainability of the industry, rather than short-term profitability.

“I believe we’re all on the same side, the policymakers, the regulators, our Chairman of ALTON, Gbenga Adebayo, and the industry. We’re united because we share concerns about a few fundamental issues. First, human rights, are critical to driving any economy. Without a sustainable industry, the broader economy and the well-being of the people will be negatively impacted.”

The proposal comes amid rising costs for telecom companies, driven by factors such as inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and the increasing price of key operational inputs like diesel, power generation, and raw materials.

Toriola highlighted the pressure these rising costs have put on telecom businesses, making it difficult for many companies to maintain profitable operations.

Earlier this week, operators issued a statement warning that service disruptions are imminent unless tariffs are adjusted to account for escalating operational costs.

The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo described the telecom sector as “under siege,” citing soaring operational costs driven by inflation, volatile exchange rates, and rising energy prices.

He noted that despite these challenges, tariffs have remained unchanged, leaving operators struggling to maintain quality service and expand their networks.

Deadly Tesla Cybertruck blast outside Trump hotel in Las Vegas was intentional, officials say

by Folarin Kehinde January 2, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Tesla Cybertruck exploded and burst into flames Wednesday morning just outside the entrance of Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, killing a person inside the vehicle and injuring several others standing nearby, local officials said.

The suspicious blast is being investigated as a possible terrorist attack, three senior law enforcement members briefed on the matter told NBC News. A motive has yet to be established.

The blast came hours after a driver in a rented pickup truck who was flying an ISIS flag plowed into New Year’s Eve revelers on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing at least 15 and injuring more than 30 others before he was shot dead by police.

That pickup truck and the Tesla in the Las Vegas explosion were rented from the same company, Turo, said Clark County/Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill.

“I don’t know,” McMahill said when asked at a news conference whether the two incidents are connected. “But we are investigating whether there is any connectivity.”

Turo, in a statement, said the company is actively aiding investigators.

“We do not believe that either renter involved in the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat,” the company said.

‘I cried first time in 4 years after seeing God’ — Ruger shares testimony in church

by Folarin Kehinde January 2, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

“I thank God. I have not cried in like four years. Today, I saw God again, and I cried. I thank God for my life. I thank God for everybody here. I thank God for everybody who has nurtured me since I started in this church,”

Michael Adebayo, the Nigerian singer popularly known as Ruger, has shared a testimony about his spiritual encounter at the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Lagos, his childhood place of worship.

The ‘Asiwaju’ hitmaker attended the church’s crossover service this year, a tradition he had missed for the past two years due to being abroad.

Determined not to miss it again, Ruger instructed his manager to cancel any scheduled shows that could interfere with the service.

Ruger, visibly moved during the service, revealed that he experienced an emotional breakthrough, shedding tears for the first time in four years as he felt God’s presence.

“Happy New Year to everybody. Today, I am so happy to be here. Today, my manager texted me and told me that I have one show tonight. And I told him to cancel it that I did not care,” Ruger said during his testimony.

“I have to be in church because in 2021, I was in church here. I missed the crossover service for 2022 and 2023 because I was outside the country. I told my manager to close all shows before the crossover service because I would not miss it. Whatever it is, we are not taking it,” he added.

Expressing his gratitude, Ruger thanked God, the congregation, and the church leadership for their role in his spiritual journey and personal development.

“I thank God. I have not cried in like four years. Today, I saw God again, and I cried. I thank God for my life. I thank God for everybody here. I thank God for everybody who has nurtured me since I started in this church,” he said.

“This is a very caring church. Because, if this church is not great, great people would not come out of this church.”

BREAKING: Fubara Shuns Pro-Wike Lawmakers, Signs N1.188 Trillion 2025 Budget Into Law

by Folarin Kehinde January 2, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

“Today, I signed into law the 2025 Rivers State Appropriation Bill. Tagged “Budget of Inclusive Growth & Development”, the bill is estimated at N1.1 trillion.“

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has signed into law the state’s N1.188 trillion budget for the 2025 fiscal year, once again shunning lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The development comes amid the continued power struggle between Fubara and Wike.

The governor signed the budget into law within two working days after presenting it to the three-member Rivers Assembly loyal to him.

The budget was presented before the Victor Oko-Jumbo-led faction of the assembly on Monday.

This development is similar to last year’s events, where Governor Fubara presented the N800 billion 2024 budget before a four-member assembly and assented to it within 24 hours.

In a statement on social media, Fubara said,

Today, I signed into law the 2025 Rivers State Appropriation Bill. Tagged “Budget of Inclusive Growth & Development”, the bill is estimated at N1.1 trillion.

I deeply appreciate the Rivers State House of Assembly for their diligence and my executives for their unwavering commitment to service.

Together, we are setting the pace for a prosperous year ahead, focusing on education, healthcare , agriculture, and infrastructure.

Let me, on this note, thank everyone and once again wish you a happy and prosperous New Year ahead as we continue the journey of making Rivers State great again.
