He died in active service – EFCC speaks on operative killed during midnight raid

by Folarin Kehinde January 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed outrage over the misleading narratives surrounding the tragic death of its officer, Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was recently killed by a suspected internet fraudster.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the commission condemned what it termed as “irresponsible, callous, inhuman, and outrageous” reports circulating on social media about the incident. Oyewale emphasized that Salisu was killed while performing his legitimate duties.

It was reported that EFCC operatives were on an mission at the residence of some suspected fraudsters in Anambra State when the attack occurred. The statement recounted how one of the suspects, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, after spotting the officials through a CCTV camera at his door, refused entry and ultimately resorted to gunfire, killing Salisu in the process.

The EFCC has vowed to ensure that Ikechukwu faces justice for his actions.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, deeply mourns the loss of Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, ASE II Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was cold-bloodedly killed while on legitimate duty on January 17, 2025, by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu,” the statement read.

The commission further criticized the social media narratives attempting to justify or rationalize the suspect’s actions, describing them as unacceptable and insensitive. It urged the public to refrain from spreading false information and respect the memory of the slain officer, as well as the grief of his family and colleagues.

“The EFCC views with deep concern the senseless reduction of a gallant officer’s death to mere social media chatter. There is no justification for rationalizing this act of terror against an officer carrying out his patriotic duty. Such unfounded narratives only compound the grief of the officer’s family and the nation,” the statement concluded.

written by Folarin Kehinde

Power supply to some parts of the Presidential Villa, Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, and Mabushi have been disrupted.

This followed the vandalism of the 132kV transmission line and the carting away of underground cable supplying bulk electricity to the Central Area transmission substation in Katampe. The vandals also carted away a 40-metre 1x500mm XLPE conductor.

“Consequently, areas experiencing power outage include Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Life Camp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of Presidential Villa,” the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said in a statement on Friday.

Mbah said the incident impacted eight distribution feeders supplying the Central Area, disrupting over 60 per cent of Abuja’s power supply.

Mbah said the incident impacted eight distribution feeders supplying the Central Area, disrupting over 60 per cent of Abuja’s power supply.

“The vandalism of this critical infrastructure is suspected to have occurred near the Menillum Park axis of Abuja,” Mbah noted, explaining that the perpetrators stole 40 meters of 1x500mm XLPE conductor from the two 132kV transmission lines.

But she said the TCN had already dispatched a team of engineers to restore power to the affected areas promptly.

Mbah appealed to residents in the affected areas to remain patient while efforts to repair the damaged cables are underway.

The TCN GM expressed concern over the ongoing issue of cable vandalism, which continues to disrupt power delivery across the country.

She also called on Nigerians to stay vigilant and protect transmission equipment to prevent further incidents of vandalism.

Dangote increases petrol price to N955 per litre

by Folarin Kehinde January 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced an adjustment in its pricing structure for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol.

In a notice on Friday titled, “Communication on PMS Price Review”, the refinery announced the new pricing structure setting the new bulk purchase rate at N955 per litre for customers purchasing between 2 million and 4.99 million litres.

This price adjustment reflects a 6.17% increase, or N55.5 per litre, compared to the discounted rate of N899.50 per litre offered during December 2024’s holiday period.

The notice added that the new rates are set to take effect from 5:30pm today (Friday), impacting all unsold stock balances and pending orders.

Dangote refinery informed its customers of the price revision, attributing the change to rising global oil prices.

“Kindly be advised that effective from 5:30 PM today, an upward adjustment has been implemented on the gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit.

“Please note that all stock balances yet to be lifted as at the above-stated time are to be repriced at the new reviewed prices.

“We shall communicate with customers on their revised volumes based on the reviewed prices, in due course,” it read in part.

Daily Trust reports that the increase is in response to the consistent surge in the price of Brent, the global benchmark for crude.

Brent crude oil surged to $81.84 per barrel—the highest level in 2025—further straining domestic petroleum pricing.

BREAKING: President Tinubu Reportedly Backs Creation of New Southwest State

by Folarin Kehinde January 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is reportedly backing the creation of a new Ijebu State in Nigeria’s Southwest region

The proposed state would be carved out from Ogun State, following a long-standing demand by the Ijebu people for recognition as an independent entity, a fresh report has revealed.

Sources revealed that President Tinubu gave his assurances during a meeting with the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, at his Bourdillon residence on January 5.

During the meeting, Oba Adetona said that Ijebu is the only former colonial province in Nigeria that has not been granted statehood, unlike other provinces such as Oyo and Sokoto, which have been divided into multiple states. The monarch argued that the Ijebu people have waited long enough for their own state.

“The president did not hesitate to express his support,” People’s Gazette quoted a source familiar with the meeting as saying.

Oba Adetona had reportedly highlighted the region’s resources and infrastructure, including industrial estates, an international airport under construction, and plans for a deep-sea port, while making case for the state creation.

In December 2024, Oba Adetona, alongside other traditional rulers and leaders from the Ijebu province, held a meeting to discuss logistics for the proposed state. These discussions focused on issues such as the location of the state capital, the creation of local government areas, and the allocation of federal resources.

The monarch expressed confidence in the region’s ability to thrive as an independent state, stating that it is well-positioned for growth and development. “Ijebu province is economically viable and already has all the infrastructural facilities needed to sustain a state,” he had said.

Before that, in November 2024, Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East, introduced a bill titled the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2024 (Creation of Ijebu State) to the National Assembly. The bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to allow for the creation of the new state.

With bills for the creation of other states in other regions of the country, it passed various legislature stages.

Critics argue that the move for the creation of Ijebu State is ill-timed, given the country’s pressing economic issues, including poverty, inflation, and insecurity.

Some political analysts have speculated that President Tinubu’s alleged support for state creation could be politically motivated, as new states might be more inclined to back him for a second term.

Meanwhile, the presidency has reportedly avoided issuing an official statement on the matter, possibly to prevent sparking controversy among supporters of other state creation initiatives across the country.

JUST IN: Gunshots cause panic at Edo governorship tribunal sitting

by Folarin Kehinde January 15, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Gunshots erupted near the venue of the Justice Wilfred Kpochi-led, three-member Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal on Wednesday morning, causing widespread panic.

Lawyers, litigants, politicians, and reporters scrambled for safety to avoid being hit by stray bullets.

However, swift intervention by fully-armed security operatives restored calm, allowing the tribunal sitting at the Edo High Court Complex on Sapele Road, Benin, to continue.

Edo APC Chairman Jarret Tenebe, condemned the incident, describing the shootings as deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

Tenebe said: “The tribunal is a sacred space, where justice is meant to be administered impartially. Any act of violence within its walls undermines the very foundation of our legal system and threatens the safety of all involved.

“Regardless of political affiliation, resorting to violence to resolve disputes is never justifiable. We must all condemn the shootings in the strongest possible terms.”

Edo chairman of APC also stated that violence had no place in a civilised society, while declaring that the people that were responsible for the heinous act must be brought to justice swiftly and without exception.

The former representative of Edo Central Senatorial District, Senator Monday Okpebholo, of the APC, won the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo, and was inaugurated on November 12 last year.

Seven of 18 political parties that participated in the election, which filed petitions at the tribunal, were Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Accord (A), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and Action Alliance (AA), which wanted their candidates to be declared winner of the keenly-contested poll.
