FG approves 50% Tarrif increase request by network operators

by Folarin Kehinde January 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), pursuant to its power under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003 (NCA) to regulate and approve tariff rates and charges by telecommunications operators, will be granting approval for tariff adjustment requests by Network Operators in response to prevailing market conditions.

The adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50 per cent of current tariffs, though lower than the over 100 per cent requested by some network operators, was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability.

These adjustments will remain within the tariff bands stipulated in the 2013 NCC Cost Study, and requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis as is the Commission’s standard practice for tariff reviews. It will be implemented in strict adherence to the recently issued NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification, 2024.

Tariff rates have remained static since 2013, despite the increasing costs of operation faced by telecom operators. The approved adjustment is aimed at addressing the significant gap between operational costs and current tariffs while ensuring that the delivery of services to consumers is not compromised.

These adjustments will support the ability of operators to continue investing in infrastructure and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and connectivity, including better network quality, enhanced customer service, and greater coverage.

Recognising the concerns of the public, this decision was made after extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the public and private sectors.

The NCC has prioritised striking a balance between protecting telecom consumers and ensuring the sustainability of the industry, including the thousands of indigenous vendors and suppliers who form a critical part of the telecommunications ecosystem.

The NCC recognises the financial pressures faced by Nigerian households and businesses and remains deeply empathetic to the impact of tariff adjustments. To this end, the Commission has mandated that operators implement these adjustments transparently and in a manner that is fair to consumers. Operators are also required to educate and inform the public about the new rates while demonstrating measurable improvements in service delivery.

Additionally, the NCC reaffirms its dedication to fostering a resilient, innovative, and inclusive telecommunications sector. Beyond protecting consumers, the Commission’s actions are designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry, support indigenous vendors and suppliers, and promote the overall growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.

As a regulator, the NCC will continue to engage with stakeholders to create a telecommunications environment that works for everyone—one that protects consumers, supports operators, and sustains the ecosystem that drives connectivity across the nation.

Donald Trump Sworn In As 47th US President

by Folarin Kehinde January 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Donald Trump was sworn in for a historic second term as president on Monday, pledging a blitz of immediate orders on immigration and the US culture wars as he caps his extraordinary comeback.

With one hand raised in the air and the other on a Bible given to him by his mother, the 47th US president solemnly took the oath of office beneath the huge Rotunda of the US Capitol.

Republican Trump and outgoing Democratic President Joe Biden had earlier traveled by motorcade together to the Capitol, where the ceremony was being held indoors — and with a much smaller crowd — for the first time in decades due to frigid weather.

Earlier, they and their spouses met for a traditional tea at the White House.

“Welcome home,” Biden said to Trump as he and First Lady Jill Biden greeted their successors at the front door to the presidential residence.

Trump, 78, was a political outsider at his first inauguration in 2017 as the 45th president, but this time around he is surrounded by America’s wealthy and powerful.

The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon chief Jeff Bezos and Google CEO Sundar Pichai all had prime seats in the Capitol alongside Trump’s family and cabinet members.

Musk, who bankrolled Trump’s election campaign to the tune of a quarter of a billion dollars and promotes far-right policies on the X social network, will lead a cost-cutting drive in the new administration.

While Trump refused to attend Biden’s 2021 inauguration after falsely claiming electoral fraud by the Democrat, this time Biden has been keen to restore the sense of tradition.

Biden joined former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton at the Capitol. Former first ladies Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush were there but ex-first lady Michelle Obama pointedly stayed away.

“We all waited and waited but there seemed to be no any effort to investigate the police handling of the protest. We are dismayed that we did not receive condolences and not even a sympathy visit. Some of our sons and daughters were not even part of the protest, but they were killed because of excessive use of force and lethal attempts made by the police to suppress the protest. We are ready to provide all the information and evidence.”.

According to reports, the attackers, numbering three, invaded the CCC Eagle Parish along Baggage Road, Odo Eran, Idiroko, around 10.30am, targeting the prophet in a brutal assault that left worshippers in shock and fear.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen opened fire on Adetula before viciously mutilating his head with an axe to confirm his death.

FG Reveals When Tax Bills Will Be Passed, Implemented

by Folarin Kehinde January 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The federal government has announced that the National Assembly will pass the controversial tax reform bills into law by the end of the first quarter (Q1) of 2025.

The disclosure was made by Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms over the weekend.

He said the implementation of the tax reform bills will commence in July 2025.

President Bola Tinubu submitted the four tax reform bills to the National Assembly on October 13, 2024, amidst criticism from leaders, particularly from those who labelled the bills as anti-north.

However, the bills recently received the backing of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), which also proposed a new “equitable” sharing formula for Value Added Tax (VAT).

written by Folarin Kehinde

Suspended clergyman Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, formerly of the City of David Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has officially launched his new church, Family Fellowship, in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The move comes amid the ongoing controversy surrounding his suspension last year, following criticism over his wife’s lavish 60th birthday celebration shortly after the tragic helicopter crash death of former Access Holdings Managing Director, Herbert Wigwe in the U.S.

Wigwe who died in the crash alongside his wife and son were members of the City of David Parish.

Pastor Iluyomade held the inaugural service on Sunday, January 19th, with viral videos showing him joyously dancing alongside his congregation.

However, his wife, Siju Iluyomade, was noticeably absent from the footage, raising speculation among observers.

His suspension from RCCG had included a three-month break and an investigation into allegations of misconduct. Despite the controversy, Iluyomade’s new venture has sparked mixed reactions across social media platforms.

“I won’t settle rift with Fubara” – Wike

by Folarin Kehinde January 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he won’t be resolving the ongoing conflict he has with Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara.

Wike made the disclosure during a media briefing in Abuja on Sunday, where he criticized Fubara and his supporters for refusing to implement President Bola Tinubu’s directives.

The minister stated, “I’m wondering, what conflict to resolve? Mr President, in his wisdom, called all parties. He said withdraw the impeachment notice, you go and do this, you go and do that, but they never returned to him.

“The Assembly withdrew the impeachment notice; you did one and two, and then you sent people to go to court. Elder, have you gone back to Mr President to tell him we can’t do three and four? Nothing.

“I have never seen this in my life — for a president to call parties, and one party goes back and says it’s political. Who does that?”

The conflict between Wike and Fubara began months following Fubara’s inauguration as governor.

The struggle between the two is allegedly due to control of the state’s political resources.

by Folarin Kehinde January 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed rumors suggesting he is facing health challenges.

Speaking during a media briefing on Sunday, Wike emphasized that he is in good health, which enables him to carry out the demanding responsibilities of his office.

The clarification comes in response to earlier reports, including social media claims, alleging that Wike was flown to London last week for a medical emergency. The former Governor of Rivers State firmly denied these reports.

“God has given me good health; that’s why I have the energy to do what I’m doing,” he stated.

His media aide, Lere Olayinka, also refuted the rumors, questioning how Wike could have been rushed to London on Thursday and returned on Friday to visit various communities in Abuja.

Taking to the X platform, Olayinka remarked, “They are saying FCT Minister Nyesom Wike was rushed to London for medical attention on Thursday night. They are even quoting time and aircraft number.

“Sebi Wike was flown to London on Thursday night for urgent medical treatment, and he used witchcraft to come back on Friday to visit Dape Community in Life Camp, Gishiri, and Pigba Sama communities in Abuja.

“The Minister will also use witchcraft to return to Abuja on Monday to commission road projects.”

Olayinka further criticized individuals spreading the rumors, saying, “People who haven’t done any medical check-up in ten years are questioning the health of a minister who is always visible, doing his job. Make una kontinu.”
