Planned Abuja Terror Attack: Suspected ISWAP Bomb Makers Arrested

by Folarin Kehinde October 27, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

No fewer than two suspected ISWAP members have been arrested in Trademore Estate, along Airport Road, Abuja on Monday.

The arrest, according to information gathered by LeadingReporters were made by the combined track team of the Department for State Security Services and their American counterparts.

The arrests, according to LeadingReporters finding followed a tip off that a highly notorious ISWAP member who specialized in making bombs lived in the estate.

Eyewitness account revealed that the DSS and their foreign counterpart used tracking devices to track the suspects, following a tip-off and a strong intel-gathering.

One of the suspects was said to be hiding in a bullet-proof Toyota Camry car parked meters away from their hideout and was trying to speed off when the bomb tracker device started pointing towards the car where he has loaded the bomb.

The vehicle was rained with bullets which did not penetrate. It took a tedious breaking of the windscreen with devices before they were able to arrest the suspect.

The security operatives were said to have shut the entrance and exit gates of the estate while the operation lasted.

Our correspondent gathered that the two suspects said to be siblings were taken into custody on an allegation of terrorism.

This happened less than 24 hours after the United States and the United Kingdom warned of a possible terror attack in Abuja, especially targeted at government buildings, places of worship and schools, among others.

A message in the Estate’s Whatsapp platform partly read, “It’s no longer news that there was a high-powered sting operation in Phase 3 this afternoon, culminating in a complete shutdown of our estate. A combination of the American Army and our DSS team were responsible.

“We are unable to give full details of the reason(s) behind the operation; however, we can confirm that there was an allegation of terrorist activities. It is therefore desperately incumbent on every resident to remain vigilant, know your neighbours and report any suspicious movement, person or activities to the exco, street reps and/or the police.

‘’We will continue to do our utmost best to keep the estate safe for all of us. Everyone is responsible for security and there should be no iota of abdication of this responsibility.”

Sex Slave: Women Give their Daughters to Bandits for Money in Kaduna – Commissioner Reveals

by Folarin Kehinde October 27, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

A serving commissioner in the cabinet of Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, Hafsat Baba has said women are now offering their daughters to bandits in exchange for money in the state.

“I see women even giving their children to the bandits to go and sleep with the bandits in order to make money,” she said while speaking at the meeting of the National Council on Women Affairs held in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to TheCable, the commissioner for human services and social development expressed concerns with how some of the girls have been let loose by their parents to roam about and seek alms in the streets.

Baba lamented that some of the girls were being trafficked from one state to another to do menial jobs, including becoming breadwinners for their parents that were supposed to cater for them.

“We have talked about insecurity, but we also have a little thing to blame. What about these informants? They are from us, they inform the bandits because they have made it a business,” he said.

“If you look at our streets, you will see them going about with their little bowls and the most disturbing thing is that the children have now become the breadwinners of the family.

“Even apart from insecurity, we have these children on the street that hawk and engage in all sorts of menial jobs. Our young girls were being taken from their community, from their states to another state to go and become baby nurses, they cook and sweep.

“This also stops them from going to school apart from the insecurity we are talking about because that means that the child is not secured. If a child becomes the breadwinner of a family, what is the essence of the parents? What are the responsibilities of the parents?

“These are all things we need to sit down and look at deeply. How does it affect the girl child? How does it also affect the family collectively? Whatever intervention we are doing, we also need to learn from each other.”

The commissioner added it was the collective of everyone, including parents, community, government and religious leaders, to ensure children, particularly the girl child is safe.

“It is our collective responsibility to ensure that we keep our children safe. Safety is very key both in school and at home. With the recent insecurity, it is now a wake-up call for us to be more vigilant as government, parents, community and religious leaders. Security is everybody’s business. Without security, children cannot go to school.”

Terror alert: US Orders Departure of Non-emergency Staff

by Folarin Kehinde October 27, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The United States government has authorised the departure of its government employees and their families from Nigeria over potential terrorist attacks..

The US State Department announced the approval of the evacuation in its updated Nigeria travel advisory on Tuesday evening.

The United States and United Kingdom had on Sunday warned of a possible terrorist attack in the capital Abuja, especially aimed at government buildings, places of worship and schools, among other targets.

“On October 25, 2022, the Department authorized the departure of non-emergency U.S. government employees and family members due to the heightened risk of terrorist attacks,” the advisory read.

“The U.S. Embassy Abuja continues to have limited ability to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Nigeria. The U.S. Consulate in Lagos is providing all routine and emergency services to U.S. citizens in Nigeria.”

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Information had dismissed the security alert, stating that Nigerians are safer now, stating that the Nigerian Armed Forces were on top of security challenges in the country.

“Our country is safer today than at any time in recent times, thanks to the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform.

“We do not discountenance the fact that terrorists, bandits and their kind would always want to do whatever it takes to disrupt our nation’s peace, security and stability. But our security forces have been proactive.”

Nigeria’s Department of State Services said the United States had previously issued similar warnings and urged citizens to remain alert.

The nation’s capital city came under heavy attack months ago following the Boko Haram raid on Kuje Prison and an attack on the Presidential Guards Brigade at Bwari in which three elite officers were killed.

Schools in Abuja were also shutdown over security concerns during the period.

The Nigeria Police Force was yet to react to the report of the authorisation of the exodus of US government workers and citizens from the country.

Calls by our correspondent to the force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday were unanswered and WhatsApp and text messages were yet to be returned.

However, in a statement on Monday, Adejobi disclosed that the Force would review the US and UK security advisories while strengthening security structures across the country for proactiveness.

He also noted that a review of the advisory was necessary, adding that the police, as the lead agency in internal security, would not take any threat intelligence, either actionable or not, for granted.

In a statement, he said, “The Nigeria Police Force hereby reassures Nigerians and all other residents and visitors in the country that it will effectively review the United States of America Embassy in Abuja’s security advisory which was issued, widely circulated, and published by the media on October 23, 2022, indicating an elevated risk of terror attacks in the country, particularly in the capital city of Abuja.”

Assuring the nation of the police plan to secure the nation, the Force Headquarters said more deployments will be made to enhance national security.

“As part of its security strategy, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has ordered all 36 states Commissioners of Police, including that of the FCT, and the head of police tactical squads, to re-strategise the security management within their jurisdictions.

“He also has announced a counter-terrorism incident simulation exercise which will take place in the nation’s capital, tagged, “Operation Darkin Gaggawa.”

2023: Peter Obi Will Need A Miracle To Win – Buhari’s Minister

by Folarin Kehinde October 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, the Minister of State for Health, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, has said it will take a miracle for the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi to win.

Mamora said this on Tuesday while featuring on a Channels TV programme “Political Paradigm”.

He said, “What I see, with all due respect is what you can call independent candidacy in Labour, and to the best of my knowledge even in America, no independent candidate has ever won the presidency. They can win in the Senate or House of Representatives but not in the presidential election, so it will be a miracle of the century.”

Mamora acknowledged that the former Anambra State governor enjoys a measure of support on social media, he, however, stressed the importance of strong political structures in winning elections.

The former senator said he won’t dismiss the support enjoyed by Peter Obi on social media, but added that “it doesn’t seem to me that it will be as such as would cause havoc in this system at the end of the day”.

This is because we do our checks on a regular basis. We look at the spread; we look at the capacity on the ground. You see, you cannot underrate the role of structures in politics and particularly in elections because this is the reality. There are many logistics involved in electioneering,” he said.

“The same way all these people are saying they will back Peter Obi is the same way they are saying they will back other candidates, especially those frontline candidates.”

Mamora said no one should be underrated in a contest, “but with all due respect to all these front liners, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Kwankwaso, of course, those are the faces we see when you tune into any channel”.

“So, you cannot underrate but I am saying that in spite of that and with all due respect to other candidates, he (Tinubu) is still the number one candidate to beat, that’s the point I am making,” he said.

JUST-IN: Existing N100, N200, N500, N1,000 Notes Cease To Be Legal Tender From January 31,2023—CBN

by Folarin Kehinde October 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Effective January 31, 2023, the existing N100, N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes will cease to be accepted as a medium of exchange for any transaction conducted in Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria has said.

The CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said this at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja.

Emefiele said the apex bank, in line with global best practices has received the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari to redesign the bank notes new with new features.

He said when effective from December 15 this year, Nigerians who are in possession of the old notes should approach their banks for the new notes.

Explaining the rationale for the move, he said recent development in photographic technology and advancements in printing devices have made counterfeiting of currencies relatively easier.

According to him, the CBN had in recent times recorded significantly higher rates of counterfeiting especially at the higher denominations of N500 and N1,000 banknotes.

He also stated that there has been significant hoarding of banknotes by members of the public, with statistics showing that over 80 per cent of currency in circulation are outside the vaults of commercial banks.

Emefiele also identified worsening shortage of clean and fit banknotes with attendant negative perception of the CBN and increased risk to financial stability; increasing ease and risk of counterfeiting evidenced by several security reports, as other reasons for the new policy.

Court fines FG N500m over Nnamdi Kanu’s unlawful extradition

by Folarin Kehinde October 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia, Wednesday, ordered the Federal Government to pay N500 million damages to the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu for his forcible extradition and extraordinary rendition from Kenya.

Presiding Judge, Justice Evelyn Anyadike, who gave the judgement said that the Federal Government and its agencies grossly violated Kanu’s fundamental human rights by illegally renditioning him back to Nigeria without due process.

The appellate court declared that the Federal Government had lost legitimacy to put the IPOB leader on trial.

It further quashed all seven counts of terrorism charge preferred against him by the Federal Government.

For the case in Umuahia, Kanu had through his Special Counsel, Mr Aloy Ejimakor, sued the Federal Government, challenging his abduction and rendition from Kenya.

CBN set to scrap ATM cards, others

by Folarin Kehinde October 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced the introduction of a National Domestic Card Scheme which is effective January 16, 2023.

According to reports, the Managing Director of Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement Systems Plc (NIBSS), Premier Owoh, stated this during the Committee’s meeting on Thursday, October 20, 2022.

The move is aimed at promoting stability, inclusion, and growth in the financial and payment system and will be delivered in conjunction with the Bankers Committee and other financial ecosystem stakeholders.

The card scheme was also expected to foster innovation within the Nigerian domestic market, while enabling African and international interoperability, allowing banks and other institutions to offer a variety of solutions including debit, credit, virtual, loyalty, and tokenized cards amongst others.

Nigeria remains Africa’s largest and most vibrant economy and the pace of digitisation and innovation, alongside the expansion of mobile penetration and the proactive policy initiatives of the CBN have driven the accelerated adoption of digital financial services.

Considering the strength and breadth of its banking sector and the rapid growth and transformation of its payments system over the last decade, Nigeria is ideally positioned to successfully launch a national card scheme.

Building on this platform to accelerate financial inclusion requires infrastructure that can deliver lower-cost payment services that are more accessible and affordable for Nigerians.

The central bank, in a statement issued by CBN Director, Corporate Communications, Mr. Osita Nwanisobi, pointed out that the scheme could also be leveraged as a platform for the seamless dissemination of government-to-person payments and other social impact initiatives, enhancing financial access and supporting the growth of a robust and inclusive digital economy.
