Indecent Dressing: Enugu Varsity Orders Students To Wear Uniforms

by Folarin Kehinde January 11, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, has banned indecent dressing and introduced a new dress code for students and staff for easy identification.

The vice-chancellor of the university, Christian Anieke, announced this on Tuesday while addressing staff and students of the institution as they returned from Christmas and New Year breaks.

According to Aneke, all students should wear their faculty uniforms with appropriate ties and shoes.

“No student is expected to wear slippers, rugged jeans, coloured hair, long fingers, fez caps or artificial eyelashes,” he directed.

Mr Anieke regretted that most students and staff wear t-shirts with unauthorised inscriptions, contrary to the school’s dress code and ordered male students to comb their hair properly or shave it.

The vice-chancellor revealed that the management had introduced qualitative assessments of all the teaching and non-teaching staff of the university.

“Principal officers of the institutions will henceforth visit the lecture halls to assess the lectures by the academic staff while the non-teaching staff will submit their roll calls at the beginning and closing of each day’s activities,” Mr Anieke explained. “Students who fail to attend lectures will not be allowed to sit for examinations.”

He announced that the 14th matriculation of the institution would take place on January 27, stressing that female matriculants would not be allowed to wear any shoe that was more than four centimetres high. The males must wear a suit with a tie to match. NAN

Despite Economic Hardship, Nigerians Spent N6.94 Billion Watching Movies in 2022

by Folarin Kehinde January 11, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) has generated N6.94 billion as revenue in 2022.

Mr Opeyemi Ajayi, National President, CEAN, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Ajayi said that there had been an appreciable increase in revenue generation in 2022 compared with the previous years.

“The box office raked in N4.74 billion in 2021, N2.1 billion in 2020, N6.4 billion in 2019 and N5.98 billion in 2018.

“For 2022, the increase in average ticket price led to revenue growth and admissions remained flat in previous year.

“Nigeria continues to lead recovery in Africa, post COVID on the back of strong local industry. Also, Hollywood continues to focus on African content and engagement is very positive for the box office.

“We observed that “Black Panther” is on track to become first N1bn movie,” he said.

Ajayi said that for 2023 outlook, gross revenue and admissions were expected to grow by a minimum of 20 per cent.

He said some factors had been observed to drive growth in the new year as 5 cinemas were opened in fourth quarter of 2022 and a minimum of 3 new locations were expected to open in the first half of 2023.

“This will be a positive addition to the box office,” he said.

He said that a 10 to 15 per cent increase on ticket price would potentially drive box office revenue in 2023, because independent cinemas constituted 25 per cent of the market share at present, although they were faced with low ticket price.

“Collaborations between Hollywood and Nollywood on content is expected to continue in the foreseeable future.

“And with breakout success of big Nollywood movies such as Brotherhood, Battle on Buka Street, King of Thieves, to mention a few, 2023 is expected to have larger budget movies and potential release outside the West African territory,” he said.

Ajayi listed the top 5 highest-grossing Nollywood films in 2022 as Brotherhood, King of Theives, Battle on Buka Street, Ijakumo and Passport.

He said the top 5 highest-grossing Hollywood films were: Black Panther, Woman King, Dr Strange, Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Adam.

by Folarin Kehinde January 11, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Plateau State Police Command has arrested a pastor who allegedly kidnapped himself several times and collected ransom from members of his congregation.

DSP Alfred Alabo, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Jos.

Alabo said that the police arrested the suspect in November 2022.

”The Police has uncovered the nefarious act of one Pastor Albarka Sukuya of Jenta Apata, Jos, who on several occasions staged his kidnap with his cohorts and received ransom from sympathising members of his congregation.

”Sequel to his spurious kidnaps of Nov. 14 and Nov. 15, 2022, where N400,000 and N200,000, respectively, were paid by his sympathisers as a ransom for his release, the incidents triggered suspicion.

”Through credible intelligence, the clergyman was invited by the DPO Nasarawa Gwong Police Station, CSP Musa Hassan, and investigation commenced immediately.

”In the course of investigation, it was established that the suspect has been conspiring with his gang to stage his kidnap and fraudulently collect ransom. He has confessed to committing the crime,” he said.

Alabo said that the suspect had revealed the identity of three other members of his gang, adding that two of them were arrested while one is still at large.

The suspect further disclosed that on Jan. 1, he set ablaze the vehicles and a bicycle parked at ECWA Bishara 3, Jenta Apata premises belonging to his colleagues,” Alabo said.

The police spokesperson called on members of the public to be watchful and ensure timely reports of any suspicious happenings around them to relevant security agencies for a prompt response.

Breaking News : 2023 Election May Be Cancelled — INEC

by Folarin Kehinde January 9, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised fresh alarms, warning that the forthcoming general election faces serious threat of cancellation should the insecurity across the country fails to improve.

Its Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, who expressed the concerns, also warned that the cancellation and/or postponement of elections in sufficient constituencies due to the prevailing security situation in the areas will not only hinder the declaration of elections results but also precipitate constitutional crisis.

Represented by the Chairman, Board of Electoral Institute (BEI), Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, Yakubu spoke in his remarks at the validation of election security training resources held in Abuja on Monday.

The electoral umpire boss however assured that the commission is not leaving anything to chance in ensuring that intensive and extensive security are provided for election personnel, materials and processes.

His words: “We all appreciate the fact that Election Security is vital to democratic consolidation through provision of enabling environment for the conduct of free, fair, credible and inclusive elections and thus strengthening the electoral process.

“Consequently, in preparations for the 2023 general elections, the commission is not leaving anything to chance in ensuring that intensive and extensive security are provided for election personnel, materials and processes.

“This is particularly significant to the commission given the current insecurity challenges in various parts the country and the fact that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members constitute the core of the Polling Unit Election officials.

“Moreover, if the insecurity is not monitored and dealt with decisively, it could ultimately culminate in the cancellation and/or postponement of elections in sufficient constituencies to hinder declaration of elections results and precipitate constitutional crisis. This must not be allowed to happen and shall not be allowed to happen.

“Therefore, security personnel in particular and all election officials in general must be security conscious and alert to unusual activities in their environment and must be fully equipped to deal with any challenge at all times,” he charged.

Speaking further, he said: “To this end, the National Security Adviser, Gen. Mohammed Babagana Monguno, and the Chairman, INEC have jointly assured the nation that conducive environment will be provided for successful conduct of the 2023 general Election.

“Similarly, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has conducted Election Security Management Workshops across the Six Geopolitical Zones. On its part the commission, through The Electoral Institute, has institutionalised the development and implementation of a cascaded training mechanism for security personnel as a critical component of its training plan.

“We are also aware that there is a new Electoral Legal Framework that will guide the 2023 as a result of the enactment of the Electoral Act 2022 which prompted the review of the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Conduct of Elections 2022.

“In particular, Sections 47(2), 60(1, 2 & 5), 62(1), 64(4a & 4b) and 64(5) of the Electoral Act 2022, which confers INEC with the power to use any technological device to transmit or transfer election results electronically are instructive in this regard.

“Emboldened by these legal protections, the commission introduced new innovative technologies and procedures and made commitments to the Nigeria People that (a) Continuous Verification, Accreditation and Voting will be conducted at the Polling Units using the Bimodal Verification and Accreditation System (BVAS) and (b) Real-Time Polling Unit-level results will be uploaded on to the INEC Results Viewing (IReV) Portal using the same BVAS.

These commitments require innovative security strategies and deployments for protection of voters, election personnel, materials, equipment, the electoral processes as well as the general public and infrastructure,” he noted.

Commenting further, the commission said that; “these innovative systems and processes minimize human errors and delays in results collation and improves the accuracy, transparency, and credibility of the results collation process thereby ensuring credibility of the process.

“They were tested during the Ekiti and Osun Governorship elections, held on June 18, 2022 and July 16, 2022, respectively. The Hon. Chairman INEC has severally assured the nation that the BVAS and IReV will be deployed during the 2023 General Elections.

Yoruba Nation: Agitators Shot Officers in Lagos – Police

by Folarin Kehinde January 9, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Police in Lagos has narrated the deadly clash with Yoruba Nation agitators at Ojota on Monday.

There is palpable tension in and around the area after the demonstrators confronted security agents.

A young man was lifeless in a photo posted on Twitter. Another is feared dead while others are injured.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin issued a statement on the bloody fracas.

“Miscreants masquerading as Yoruba Nation Agitators” came out in their hundreds, disrupting social and commercial activities at Ojota”, the PRO noted.

He said in response, officers from Alausa Division and the Raid Respond Squad (RRS) stepped in to disperse the unlawful gathering and prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The miscreants attacked the police, shooting, and destroying two vehicles in the process.

“One person has been confirmed dead, while two police officers shot by the miscreants are currently receiving treatment. Four suspects have been arrested and investigations have commenced.”

Hundeyin vowed that the Lagos State Police Command would not allow any person or group of persons to disrupt the peace in Lagos.

It is unclear if the deceased was hit by a stray bullet or targeted by security agents.

“They shot teargas and guns at us. They have killed one person, this is Ojota”, a protester screamed in a video.

One Toyota Hilux, reportedly driven by the police, was set on fire. There were also bonfires on the road.
