Wike’s Son Not Shot In US – Rivers Govt

by Folarin Kehinde March 2, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Rivers State Government has debunked claims in social media that the son of Governor Nyesom Wike was shot dead in the United States.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Chris Finebone, said this while reacting to a trending post in social media that Wike’s son was shot dead in the US over the governor’s alleged activities in the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections in Rivers State.

The post is captioned ‘Breaking news: Wike’s only son shot dead in California, US over father’s act in Rivers election’.

The post seen by our correspondent showed the governor’s son in a convocation gown at his graduation in a United Kingdom University last year, flanked by Wike, his wife Justice Suzette and their daughter, posing for the cameras.

But Finebone in a statement entitled ‘Yet again, another lie’, sent to newsmen in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, said the governor neither has a son or any child for that matter in the United States.

He said the post was the handiwork of those he described as wicked people who were bent on blackmailing and tarnishing the image of the Rivers State Governor, and urged members of the public to discountenance it.

The statement partly read, “This is a big lie by evil people. For the avoidance of doubt, Gov. Nyesom Wike has no son or child in the US. By the special grace of God, the governor’s children are safe and doing well where they are.

“This satanic rumour is yet another concoction by wicked people in their insidious quest to blackmail and tarnish the image of Gov. Wike. There is absolutely no truth in this cheap blackmail.

“The public should disregard and throw it into the trash can where it belongs.”

by Folarin Kehinde February 27, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Social media users are reacting to singer, Bankole Wellington popularly known as Banky W’s election loss to Attah.

It is no longer news that the “Yes or No” singer lost Eti-Osa Federal constituency seat to Labour Party candidate, Thaddeus Attah.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Attah as the winner of the Eti-Osa Federal constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

According to Prof Funmilayo Odukoya, who is INEC Returning Officer, Attah pulled a total of 24,075 votes to defeat his rival, Banky W of the People Democratic Party (PDP) who gathered 18,666 votes, and Mr Babajide Obanikoro of APC, who had 16,901 votes.

Reacting to it, many social media users opined that Banky W’s choice of party is to be partially blamed for his loss.

According to them, if Banky W had camped with Labour Party, there are higher chances of him winning the election.

One wild flower wrote, “Banky is a casualty of PDP’s reputation. He would have joined LP

One Blessing Imuekemhe wrote, “It’s a pity… Peter Obi’s influence and Grace is what made Attah win..Most persons just punched the LP logo through out forgetting that Banky W is also a candidate for House of Rep in Lagos State

FCT: LP Candidate Ireti Rejects Cancellation of Bwari Result

by Folarin Kehinde February 27, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ireti Kingibe, the Labour Party (LP) FCT Senatorial candidate has rejected the cancellation of Bwari Area Council election result.

Ireti said there was no over voting in Bwari Area Council as alleged and wondering why the result was cancelled.

Speaking to journalists before she moved to the collation centre to complain, Ireti said a mistake in the tabulation should not affect the victory of a candidate.

“I’ve been told that the person that was writing the figure made a mistake whether knowingly or unknowingly,” Ireti said adding that,”the person put two plus two equals to five.

“And the judges said over voting. The Electoral Officer (EO) said it is an error from the person that wrote the results whether he did it on purpose or accidentally.

“All the results sheets show there was no over voting in any of the polling units. So, why cancel the result of the entire area council? We have watched them.

“They’ve been looking for a reason to cancel all our strongholds and suddenly, they found an error and that can’t stand.

“They said it is not their job to look at the results sheets on over voting. We have had enough. They said we should go to the polls, they want to impose people on us, it will not work. The way this country is going, we’ve had enough,” Ireti said before moving to the collaboration centre.

Earlier, Ireti had called on her supporters to keep calm over the delay in the announcement of election results, stating that the margin is too high for manipulation.

She said the delay in the announcement of the FCT Senatorial election is as a result of violence recorded during the election.

Ireti said the people of the FCT should keep calm adding that her opponents don’t want to lose graciously.

“There has been a lot of violence. So, that delayed things a little bit, but right now, results in five area councils have come in at the FCT collation centre, once that is done, they will now take all the results to the FCT collation centre.

“There have been few issues in Abaji, the result was not tallying. We had some couple of violence, that is what caused the delay in announcement but the Police have been on top of the issues.

“In every polling unit, we were able to preempt except for the Gwarinpa centre where it was not possible to preempt because they had destroyed the ballot papers.

“So, the results are coming, but the process is slow because our opponents are not losing graciously. Let’s see what happens.

“I am just trying to tell my supporters to be calm because the margin is very high to stop the victory. They should relax and have faith in the FCT INEC. I am confident that eventually, the results will soon be announced. Most of us are confident that it is just a matter of time.

Foundation Releases Report on Women’s Political Participation in Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde February 27, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Dinidari Foundation in partnership with UN Women and Norwegian Embassy over the weekend released a comprehensive report on women’s political participation in Nigeria with Kaduna and Plateau States as a case study.

Executive Director, Dinidari Foundation, Ndi Bala identified equal participation and leadership of Women in political and public life as a key component to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals(SDG) by 2030’ with a key SDG indicator assigned to assess the proportion of seats held by women in the National parliaments, ministerial positions, and local government as one of the measures of progress towards the attainment of the SDG.

Meanwhile, the report stated that despite strategies to ensure Nigerian women’s inclusiveness in politics there has been a steady decline from the 2011 and 2015 data for the house of representatives (at 6.8 and 5.6% respectively for both years) and a static progress in the senate (at 6.4% and 6.5% for the respective years) representing the lowest figures for sub-Saharan Africa and globally and no woman has served as Governor in Nigeria.

Also, the report identified that
too many analyses of women in Nigerian politics focus on numbers over substance with the literature demonstrating that women are sometimes given nominal roles with little actual power in government and political parties and addressing this challenge will require that more questions on the nature of women’s political power and the terms of their participations.

Meanwhile, the study which was conducted Plateau and Kaduna had 4 parties in both States were identified to best fit the criteria to be assessed, these were the APC, LP, NNPP, and PDP in both States with a total of 75 Respondents reached from the State capital and the 3 senatorial districts in each State.

Findings however revealed that the average duration of party membership for the women in politics assessed was 10 years for both States, implying there have been active women In the political space for over a 10 year period, as such there has been the opportunity for the parties in the State to put forward women candidates over the last 10 years.

“The 2023 elections for Kaduna had less women candidates. than the 2019 elections in the 4 parties, and the Plateau fielded fewer women in proportion to its total electoral candidates for 3 parties than the 2019 estimates”.

Furthermore, key barriers to women’s political participation in Plateau include discrimination by men, lack of finance, poor leadership skills, Lack of cooperation among women and Cultural religious and economic barriers.

Similarly, Women Leaders in Kaduna State identified funding, how to convince women to engage in politics, lack of cooperation among members, neglect of women (non-inclusion) in party affairs as major barriers.

However, the foundation recommended that women leader position in Nigeria needs to be entrenched in all parties and its roles expanded to accommodate such activities that relate to advocacy within the party on issues of particular concern to women constituents and women party members to increase women membership.

Also, promotion of women’s leadership throughout the party, at both the local and national levels and lobbying for and overseeing internal party reform, including the implementation of voluntary quotas for women’s political participation The committees should also be created to cater for such roles.

Similarly, strategies need to be developed to address the low level of women participation as flag bearers of their parties for electoral positions ,and the adoption of a quota for increasing women’s participation in politics, need to be promoted.

The research also identified that waiving fees for registration of women candidates for electoral positions is not sufficient as funds are still required for other aspects of a woman party flag bearers campaign strategy, as such the women’s wings should implement resource mobilization strategies to promote its candidates within the party for electoral office if nominated.

Similarly, capacity building will be required for the women’s wing for the domains of capacity assessed, as the progress made by the women’s wings can be assessed as a measure of support toward its eventual progress and engaging with men within the parties is important for the women’s success as such communications training is key for the success of their efforts.

Poll: Tinubu Will Take Nigerians From Frying Pan To Fire – Atiku

by Folarin Kehinde February 19, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has said the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would take the country from the ‘frying pan to fire’ if he is elected come the February 25 election.

In a statement on Sunday, Mr Phrank Shaibu, Special Assistant on Public Communications to the PDP candidate, said Nigerians must not be carried away by Tinubu’s message of renewed hope as it is “hopelessness in disguise.”

He disclosed that Nigerians should protect their hearts against the deception of APC as they prepare for the poll this week.

He asked Tinubu to decide whether he was running on Buhari’s legacy or running against it so as not to deceive innocent voters.

He added that Nigerians should take Tinubu’s recent remarks against fuel scarcity and naira scarcity with a pinch of salt.

Shaibu stated that if Tinubu won, he would turn the country into his fiefdom and a one-party state by muzzling the opposition as he had done in Lagos since 1999.

According to him, Tinubu would also turn the National Assembly into his footstool and orchestrate the fall of the 4th Republic.

Shaibu said Tinubu’s actions had shown that he had no respect for President Buhari or his office.

“Tinubu says the petrol scarcity and the naira shortage are aimed at scuttling his ambition. Later, he and his acolytes said they were only voicing out against the policy out of sheer concern for the masses. These people never muttered a word when he stated that students spent ten months at home in 2020 and eight months at home in 2022 due to the unprecedented university lecturers’ strike.”
