Escalation of abductions sparks nationwide outrage as bandits lay siege on major Nigerian cities

by Folarin Kehinde January 16, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

In a disturbing turn of events, criminal elements, including bandits, have expanded their reign of terror beyond the North-West region, infiltrating significant cities across Nigeria.

The alarming shift has paralysed social and economic activities as urban centres like Lagos and Abuja witness an unprecedented surge in abductions.

The catalyst for heightened public anger occurred with the tragic killing of Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar, a 400-level student at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The perpetrators, who abducted seven family members from Sagwari Estate Layout in Dutsen-Alhaji, demanded a staggering N700 million for their release.

Regrettably, Nabeeha lost her life due to alleged delays in meeting the ransom demands, triggering a nationwide outcry on social media.

The Al-Kadriyar family, already grappling with the loss of one member, now faces the dire situation of five sisters still in captivity.

Despite releasing their father, Alhaji Mansoor Al-Kadriyar, the abductors raised the ransom to N100 million per captive, insisting on a swift payment by Wednesday.

In a desperate bid to secure their release, the Al-Kadriyar family has sought financial support from well-meaning Nigerians.

Tragically, the criminal elements also claimed the lives of 13-year-old Folashade Ariyo and two unidentified hostages, whose bodies were dumped near a former military checkpoint in Kaduna State.

The devastating plea for help extends beyond individual families. Oladosu Ariyo, who lost his daughter, appealed to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for intervention.

Shocking statistics from the 2023 Nigeria Security Report by Beacon Consulting depict a grim reality, with 9,754 lives lost and 4,049 abduction cases reported throughout the country.

The North East leads in fatalities, while the North West records the highest number of abductions.

A report titled ‘The Economics of Nigeria’s Kidnap Industry: Follow the Money’ by SB Morgan reveals a surge in kidnappings between July 2022 and June 2023, with over 3,620 people abducted and reported ransom demands exceeding N5 billion.

The menace, initially prevalent in the North-West and North-Central regions, is spreading to the South-West, particularly Lagos and Ogun states.

Recent incidents in Lagos, including the abduction of a 13-year-old schoolgirl, Miracle Adereti, underscore the unsettling expansion of this criminal enterprise.

As the nation grapples with this escalating crisis, citizens and experts are calling for urgent and decisive measures to curb the rising tide of abductions and ensure the safety of lives and property.

The Chief Executive Officer of YouthHub, Rotimi Olawale, told Punch, “The FCT is not only affected by the kidnapping incidents. It has spread to neighbouring states such as Niger, Kaduna, and Benue, among others. If not properly handled, the ugly incident will spread to more states.

“The security agencies need to deploy intelligence to deal with this issue. If the kidnappers know that they will not go scot-free once apprehended, the criminal acts will reduce. They need to always act swiftly whenever the need arises.”

On his part, the Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, Auwal Rafsanjani, said everything has stayed the same since the Tinubu administration came on board.

He said, “Comparing between the Buhari and administration and this, what has changed? Nothing. Bandits and terrorists are still very active. Abuja is becoming unsafe; even under Buhari, we did not have the mass abductions witnessed in Abuja of late. What can you say has changed?

“Let nobody deceive himself that there has been progress made so far. The government has to redouble its efforts.”

Speaking on the security crisis, the Chief Executive Officer of Beacon Intel and security expert, Dr Kabir Adamu, advised the federal and state governments to collaborate in dominating the forested and other ungoverned spaces, which the gunmen use as safe havens and to keep their victims.

He added, “Individuals and corporate organisations must understand threats and the inherent risks; a necessary prerequisite for adopting the appropriate risk treatment. As security threats are transient, the approach should be dynamic and forward-looking.”

BREAKING: Hoodlums attack doctors at EKSUTH, steal corpse

by Folarin Kehinde January 15, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Activities have been paralysed at the EKITI State University Teaching Hospital, EKSUTH, Ado-Ekiti, as a result of an emergency and indefinite strike declared by labor unions at the hospital following an attack by suspected hoodlums who invaded the medical facility.

Leading reporters learnt that some suspected hoodlums on Monday invaded the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, and attacked some doctors.

It was gathered that the hoodlums destroyed some facilities at the hospital and stole a corpse suspected to be the father of one of the hoodlums.

At the moment, the Association of Resident Doctors, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti has directed its members to embark on an indefinite strike with immediate effect.

This was contained in a letter addressed to the Chief Medical Director, Professor Kayode Olabanji and signed by the President of the Association, Dr Famous Adeyemi.

“The above-named association writes to notify you of the decision of the emergency congress held today to embark on an indefinite strike with immediate effect.

“This follows the actions of hoodlums who stormed the accident and emergency unit of the hospital in the early hours of today and assaulted some members of the association, destroyed several hospital properties and stole a corpse during the attack.

“This attack is happening at a time when our members are showing understanding with the state government on the non-implementation of our demands on improved welfare vis-a-vis being faced with work overload and exhaustion, which is as a result of poor remuneration, pay disparity, and the attending effect of local brain drain.

“We wish to use this opportunity to call on the management of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) and the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice for their actions.

“We also implore the state government to, as a matter of urgency, attend to our pending demands, which border on improving the welfare of our members.

“We implore the management and the government to provide a lasting solution to these incessant assaults on our members and ensure safety when they are at their duty post.

“We call on the state assembly to enact a law to criminalise assault on health workers in Ekiti State. The strike will not be called off until our demands are met.”

Confirming the development, the spokesperson in charge of the University Teaching Hospital, Rolake Adewumi, said already, four armed additional policemen have been drafted to ensure security at the hospital.

She disclosed further that the state police commissioner has since launched a manhunt on the perpetrators with a vow to ensure that they are arrested and be made to face the wrath of the law.

According to a statement signed by the hospital’s spokesperson, the management of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado – Ekiti has frowned at the activities of hoodlums who vandalised the Accident and Emergency Complex of the hospital and took away a corpse.

In his reaction to the incident, the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Professor Kayode Olabanji, said management will not tolerate any act of violence or mayhem being unleashed on members of staff of the hospital.

According to Him, the management has stationed four armed policemen at the Accident and Emergency as well as two armed policemen at the main gate to strengthen the security of the hospital until further notice.

He pointed out that the Division Police Officer in charge of Oke-Ila Division, SP Sesan Falade, has also assured frequent patrol of the hospital premises.

Also, the EKSUTH boss noted that the management and the DPO had met with the State Chairman of the Road Transport Employer Association of Nigeria, Mr Sunday Adeola and mandated him to produce the ring leader because the management heard that the person involved is a member of the association.

The CMD explained further that the person who was involved in a recent similar occurrence at the Neo Natal ward will face the wrath of the law as the case is already in court and the culprit is being prosecuted.

Prof Olabanji, therefore, appealed to the members of staff to calm down as steps are in the right direction to ensure that such an incident does not occur again, saying the management will not tolerate any act of molestation of its staff while discharging their duties.

JUST IN: Electricity tariff increase imminent as FG reveals fresh plan to remove subsidy

by Folarin Kehinde January 15, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government is set to phase out electricity subsidies, with plans for a gradual tariff hike aimed at reducing the financial burden on government expenditures.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made the revelation during a recent visit to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) headquarters.

He said, “As it is today, the Federal Government still subsidises electricity because the current tariff DISCOs are allowed to charge is not cost-reflective.

“This is why the Federal Government spent close to N700 billion in 2023 to subsidise electricity. If tariffs are left at this current rate, it is projected that the government will spend about N1.7 trillion to subsidise electricity. The FG cannot afford that.”

“There must be an upward review of the electricity tariff in order to reduce the amount of subsidy required. If we make the tariff 100 per cent cost-reflective, the burden will be too much on our people.

“We don’t want that. To reduce the burden on our people, it is only a fraction of the tariff review that will be reflected.”

According to the minister, prior to the tariff reassessment, there will be a plan for awareness campaigns and advocacy to support the rationale behind the proposed increase. He clarified that the tariff adjustment would follow a “graduated” approach, where the affluent would face a higher increase, while the less privileged would experience a reduced impact.

Adelabu also stated that “there must be an improved power supply” for the review to take place.

The visit, according to him, is to assess and evaluate electricity infrastructure across the country.

“It also includes visiting the institution that carries the primary responsibility of electricity distribution in the state,” he added.

The minister previously toured key transmission facilities in the state, such as the Ayede 330/132KV transmission substation in Ibadan. Additionally, he mentioned plans to inaugurate solar-powered mini-grids in specific local government areas, overseen by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

“I am happy to be here for the first time to meet with the management of IBEDC. I am here to discuss the state of performance in the power sector. Effort to improve its performance is a collective one.”

He noted that the performance of the electricity sector was not satisfactory, hence the need for government and private sector stakeholders to cooperate.

“IBEDC is the largest of the DISCOs in terms of coverage. The consumers’ expectations of us are very high, and we cannot afford to disappoint them.

“President Bola Tinubu, during his election campaign, promised a stable power supply to the people. In his priority areas, power comes first.

“There is nothing we can achieve in terms of economic growth and national development without a reliable electricity supply.”

He said the visit to the Ayede substation established in 1978 was to “look at the possibility of an upgrade and also the establishment of another 330KVA substation in Ibadan to reduce the load on the existing one.

“We are also working on establishing a new 132KVA substation in Eleyele and UI, which we believe will also improve the capacity of the transmission infrastructure.”

In his response, Kingsley Achife, the Chief Executive Officer of IBEDC, acknowledged the minister for his first visit to the company and asked for a correction in the electricity tariff.

FCT: Kidnappers goes berserk, kill two more persons, raised ransom to N700m

by Folarin Kehinde January 15, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Two additional abductees from Sagwari Estate Layout in Dutse, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have been killed by kidnappers.

The abductees were killed as a stern message to their relatives engaged in ransom negotiations, LEADING REPORTERS learnt.

The latest development comes barely a week after another victim, Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar, was killed by the same gang.

The kidnappers, who abducted 10 residents on January 7, have taken further steps to pressure families into meeting their ransom demands. Initially set at N60 million per head, the price has now been adjusted to N100 million, pushing the total sum to N700 million.

Residents claim the killings were a direct response to delays in raising the ransom.

Among the murdered is Folorunsho Ariyo, a 13-year-old student. The kidnappers, operating in Bwari villages, had already killed one victim, Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar, to pressure the family into swiftly raising the ransom.

In reaction, former Minister Prof. Ali Pantami, on Sunday, mobilised a N50 million ransom balance for the Al-Kadriyar family after Nabeeha’s murder.

The management noted that “Al accounts owned and controlled by Imole during his lifetime were immediately put on a Post No Debit order on the 12th of September, 2023. This order remains valid till date.”

It added that the accounts “will be properly handed over to the family upon resolution of the internal dispute”.

Mad rush as marketers get approval to sell Dangote fuel despite company’s refusal to immediately begin fuel production

by Folarin Kehinde January 15, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Seven major oil marketers in Nigeria have registered with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery for the lifting and distribution of refined petroleum products produced by the $20bn plant.

Dealers under the aegis of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria confirmed on Sunday that with the registration, they would commence the distribution of fuel produced from the facility once the commercial terms are sorted.

This came as the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria also revealed that they would meet with the management of the Dangote refinery this week to discuss terms of product loading.

However, Managing Director of Dangote Ports Operations, Mr Akin Omole recently disclosed that despite commencing operation, Dangote refinery will not start with the production of petrol but with diesel, aviation fuel, and LPG.

His words:

“Once the 6 million barrels are fully delivered, it will facilitate the initial run of the refinery as well as kick-start the production of diesel, aviation fuel, and LPG before subsequently progressing to the production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).”

Meanwhile, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria stated that PETROAN had been engaging the management of the multi-billion dollar refinery for the supply of products from the facility.

As IPMAN and PETROAN engage the refinery, major marketers who are members of MOMAN have already registered with the plant and are set to start buying products.

The seven major marketers include 11 Plc, Conoil Plc, Ardova Plc, MRS Oil Nigeria Plc, OVH Energy Marketing Limited, Total Nigeria Plc and NNPC Retail.

On Friday, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery announced the commencement of production of Automotive Gas Oil, also known as diesel, and JetA1 or aviation fuel.

The President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, had in a statement issued by the firm, thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support, encouragement, and thoughtful advice towards the actualisation of the project.

He also thanked the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, and Nigerians for their support and belief in the historic project.

“We have started the production of diesel and aviation fuel, and the products will be in the market within this month once we receive regulatory approvals. This is a big day for Nigeria. We are delighted to have reached this significant milestone.

“This is an important achievement for our country as it demonstrates our ability to develop and deliver large capital projects. This is a game changer for our country, and I am very fulfilled with the actualisation of this project,” Dangote stated.

The refinery, located in Lagos, has so far received six million barrels of crude oil at its two SPMs located 25km from the shore. The first crude delivery was done on December 12, 2023, and the 6th cargo was delivered on January 8, 2024.

The refinery can load 2,900 trucks a day at its truck-loading gantries. The products from the refinery will conform to Euro V specifications, according to the firm.

“The refinery design complies with the World Bank, US EPA, European emission norms, and Department of Petroleum Resources emission/effluent norms, employing state-of-the-art technology,” the company stated.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemical Project, a subsidiary of Dangote Industries Limited, is a 650,000 barrels per day crude oil refinery, located in Dangote Industries Free Zone, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is an industrial plant that transforms crude oil into various usable petroleum products such as diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, and kerosene.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery with a capacity to refine 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day covers an area of approximately 2,635 hectares in the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos.

When contacted and asked whether major oil marketers would be involved in the lifting of refined products from the Dangote refinery, or whether the facility would distribute the fuel itself, the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, MOMAN, Clement Isong, replied, “I confirm that we (major marketers) have met with him (Dangote).

According to Isong, all MOMAN members have registered with Dangote Petroleum Refinery to become marketers of its products. He told The PUNCH that MOMAN members would have the product in their stations the moment it was available for sale.

“We have all registered with Dangote so that we call buy and sell. All my members are registered with Dangote. Whenever the product is ready and starts coming out, you will see it in our filling stations,” he said.

I confirm that my members have registered with them. We were waiting for the production to start and now it has started and they will start discussing the commercial terms. So yes, major marketers and other players will buy for the market. The important thing was the registration.

“So now the commercial terms will be agreed with each marketer and then they will buy from them. There are several ways you can buy from them. They have loading ranks, over 90, so you can take your truck to go and pick. You can also use vessels to pick. Those are the two ways you pick products.”

BREAKING: Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso have merged to oust APC in 2027, says Utomi

by Folarin Kehinde January 15, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Political economist, Professor Pat Utomi, has revealed that the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) have joined forces to establish a formidable political party aimed at ousting the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

The professor disclosed this in an interview with Channels Television on Sunday, January 14.

He said: “It’s a really clean start. You have to start from the premise that Nigeria has not had a political party since 1999. And let’s be very honest with ourselves. What we have managed is to create platforms that enable machine politics from which to grab power, usually for state capture. If you will want to test that, check how much the quality of life of a Nigerian has improved since 1999.

“It’s frightening but the truth is a matter that in 1999, a political class managed to build a certain coalition of accommodation to keep the military out and share the spoils of power in Nigeria and somehow did not manage to create an alignment with the Nigerian people to improve the quality of their lives. This is why you can see Nigeria deteriorating, becoming the poverty capital of the world, becoming the centre of widespread violence everywhere.

“And if you want to take some clear examples, I want anybody who is a political scientist, or economist in Nigeria to look at where India was in 1999 and where Nigeria was in terms of mood, violence in politics, the quality of life of people and where they both are today in Nigeria versus India.

“In 1991, India was technically bankrupt. Foreign Reserves could not accommodate more than three weeks of trading. What has happened since 1999 is that India’s politics has managed to focus on the rational engagement of a developmental state.

“If you look at the numbers today, India is now speeding past the so-called miracle economies of South-East Asia. Nigeria, on the other hand, has been traveling in the reverse direction. What better explanation can there be than the fact that Nigeria has not managed to organise the structures for political participation that can focus on the Nigerian people and lift their lives?”

Asked about who will be the presidential candidate for the mega party in the next election, he said: “No, no, we’re not talking about candidates now. We’re talking about what the party will look like, the values that the party will stand for, the policies that the party will stand for, a national strategy.”

Shameful! Wike dances in Rivers rally as kidnappers takes over FCT

by Folarin Kehinde January 15, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ayo Oyalowo, a prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, stated that Nyesom Wike is disinterested in governing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Wike, the current FCT minister, is the immediate past governor of Rivers state and a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain.

The minister has been in the news more for his involvement in Rivers state politics than for overseeing the Nigerian capital.

This has continued to draw criticisms from Nigerians, including Oyalowo, who is also a development economist.

Reacting to a video of Wike dancing at a political rally in Rivers state over the weekend, Oyalowo wrote on X:

”This man is completely disinterested in governing FCT, the security situation in Abuja has become so perilous but here is the so called Minister, dancing all over Rivers State without any care in the world.

”What kind of human being is this?”

Chinondu Wokocha, a political analyst, had earlier written:

”Abuja is on Fire while FCT Minister Wike is in Rivers State looking for his lost Structure.

”He has been busy doing campaigns and consultations for the upcoming LGA election.

”They are not calling out Wike, whose position of a FCT minister is almost tantamount to a governor and doubles as the chief security officer of the FCT.”
