Man knocked down by vehicle while attempting to steal woman’s foodstuffs in Abuja

by Folarin Kehinde February 16, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A 36-year-old man identified as Jamilu was struck by a vehicle on Tuesday in Kwali Market, Abuja, while attempting to abscond with a woman’s purchased foodstuffs.

The incident occurred around 11 am when the woman, Mrs. Patience Raphael, had just completed her shopping, including items like rice, beans, garri, and yam, all packed in a sack.

As she sought a truck pusher to transport her groceries, Jamilu purportedly offered to help carry the load to the roadside.

Seizing the opportunity to make away with the woman’s foodstuffs, Jamilu rushed across the road. However, his escape was abruptly halted as he was hit by a passing car.

Ibrahim Audu, a witness to the incident, told the Daily Trust: “In fact, I was even the one that was trying to call a wheel barrow pusher to come and carry the foodstuffs for the woman when the man came to help carry the load.

“As he was rushing to cross the road in order to escape with the load, he was knocked down.”

He added that the suspect, who sustained bruises and a fracture, was taken to the hospital by vigilantes.

BREAKING: Govt seals Sahad Store over hoarding, high price

by Folarin Kehinde February 16, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has taken action against misleading pricing practices at Sahad Store, a well-known supermarket in the Garki area of Abuja.

The move follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent announcement of plans to address factors contributing to the nation’s food crisis.

The FCCPC Acting Executive Vice Chairman, Adamu Ahmed Abdullahi, led the enforcement operation, accusing the supermarket management of shortchanging customers by charging prices different from those displayed on the shelves.

Abdullahi revealed that the store would remain sealed until a thorough investigation is completed.

Briefing journalists, he said: “What we have found out that these people are doing is misleading pricing and lack of transparency in the pricing, which is against Section 115 (3) of the law that says a consumer is not required to pay a price for any good or service higher than the one that’s on display.”

“Section 155 states that any corporate person that contravenes is liable to a fine of 100 million naira or even more, and the directors of the company themselves are liable upon conviction payment of 10 million naira each or imprisonment of six months or both.

“What we have done today is to make sure that they comply with the law. We initially called them to come and defend themselves, but failed to show up. In the long run, they sent a lawyer whom we asked if he was familiar with the facts of the case. He said he wasn’t.

“To unseal the store, they have to make sure that they do what is required to be done.”

The information minister, Mohammed Idris, had recently disclosed that a committee would be set up to address hoarding issues in collaboration with state governors.

He said the move aims to ensure food availability, control prices, and eliminate practices that lead to unnecessary hardship for Nigerians.

Security agencies were instructed to coordinate with governors to combat the hoarding of essential commodities.

“I’m losing my eyesight”, says Tiwa Savage, reveals next line of action

by Folarin Kehinde February 16, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Singer Tiwa Savage has cried out about the poor condition of her eyesight.

The afrobeats sensation took to her Instagram to share the moment she realised her vision was bad.

She acknowledged that for the past two to three years, she has been experiencing difficulties with her eyesight, explaining that when she attempts to read, her vision becomes blurry and the situation has worsened considerably.

Tiwa Savage revealed that she finds herself having to take screenshots of messages and then zoom in on them using her camera to read them.

Having experienced this, she went visiting an Optician in London, who informed her that while her long-range vision is somewhat acceptable, her short-range vision is problematic.

To alleviate the discomfort, the singer has obtained a recommended pair of glasses, although humorously questioning whether she still maintains her beauty charm with them on.

In her words: “Guys the last two or three years, I have been noticing that I will be squinting sometimes and when I read some stuff, it would be getting blurry.

“And in the last few months, I noticed it got really bad that sometimes I will have to screen grab a message and then go back into my camera and zoom. So when I was in London, I said let me go and see the Optician.

“So my long sight is okay for now, he said, not great; but my short sight (shakes her head). Like literally, I will be in a restaurant and I won’t be able to read the menu.

“But for now, your girl is back and you know I needed to make some luxury and got myself a cartel pair because ABG don’t play. Do I still look sexy?”.

JUST IN: Soludo’s agency destroys Nation, Sun, Vanguard newspapers in Anambra

by Folarin Kehinde February 15, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Tension heightened in Anambra state on Thursday, February 15, following the destruction of newspapers and beating of vendors in the state by the men of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA).

It was gathered that they brazenly declared their disregard, suggesting the matter be left to God, while insisting that the state government forbids newspaper sales on the streets.

Among the newspapers destroyed were The Nation, The Sun, Vanguard, Punch, and Guardian.

The aides also attacked individuals at the popular Aroma junction, including security personnel, and destroyed the vendors’ PoS machines.

The action of men of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority ACTDA, made passersby and petty traders in the area, to rein curses on the operators of such mayhem.

The Nation reports that the reckless action by the ACTDA drew curses from onlookers and local traders.

The vendors have therefore vowed not to resume newspaper sales until there is a change in Soludo’s administration.

The tables of the vendors were equally destroyed while their umbrellas were confisticated by the agents of the government.

Last week, such inhuman treatment by Soludo’s aides attracted the attention of the state lawmakers, who advocated for a mini market to set up for them in the state.

According to the lawmakers, such was to control the menace of street trading and associated effects on the state capital.

While making his submission during plenary, Mbachu said poverty rate was on the increase, adding that creating avenues for people to earn a living had become mandatory.

“There are many quarters within Awka metropolis which create the need to establish local mini-markets to serve the people living within those areas.

“It is nearly impossible to secure a shop within the already established markets and the limited shops available are in high and exorbitant price to rent.

“The creation of mini-markets within Awka metropolis, will be a solution to solve the menace of shanties, street trading and serve as a means of encouraging micro businesses thereby achieving the goals of making Anambra a livable and prosperous homeland, ” the lawmaker said

Soludo’s Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, told The Nation, that he was not aware of the situation, but promised to reach out to the MD of the agency.

Aburime maintained that keeping Anambra clean was for everyone, adding that even in Lagos, newspaper vendors were allowed to exist at their different designated areas.

The Nation overheard one of the ACTDA officials saying, “our Governor is behind what we are doing, if they like, let them report to Tinubu, nothing will happen.”

The destruction had not been against the vendors alone, but to every petty trader along all the streets in Anambra state as part of government’s ‘keep Anambra clean project.

The Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN), on Tuesday, issued a nationwide strike notice from February 27 over unfavourable business climate.

Adeniyi Bamidele Gabriel, Kogi State Chairman of AMBCN, who disclosed this to newsmen, said the notice was contained in a statement issued jointly by the Association’s National President, Mansur Umar and National Secretary, Jude Okafor.

He said the organisation is closing shops “due to the multifarious increase in the prices of baking materials such as flour, sugar, yeast, vegetable oil, petrol, diesel occasioned by subsidy removal and forex deregulation, multiple taxation via federal government agencies.”

AMBCN also added that the Federal Government effected multiple taxation burdens via agencies like NAFDAC, SON, NESREA, Consumer Protection Council, Department of Weight and Measures, among others.

The organisation added that, “States and local government agencies fees and levies such as emblems, assessment levies, touting, etc. and the general hike on ease of doing business in Nigeria” have created a harsh business climate for the organisation to operate.

To ease their business operations, they demanded: “Liberalisation of flour and sugar importation, reduction or total removal of import duties on major baking materials.

“Provision of concessionary forex exchange to flour millers and other stakeholders, and reduction of tariff on imported wheat and sugar.

“Development of cultivation and processing of wheat and sugar cane in Nigeria, removal of multiple taxation at the federal, state and local government levels.”

The Association further called for “suspension of all forms of taxation on the bakery industry for now at the federal, state and local government levels,

“And set up a price control and monitoring committee as allowed by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and other conditions that will enhance the ease of doing business in the country.”
