by Folarin Kehinde February 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has opted out of the planned nationwide strike proposed by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

This was contained in a statement by the Vice President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, on Thursday.

Etim blamed the decision to pull out of the planned strike on what he described as “lack of decision making”.

He emphasized on the need for collective agreement between labour unions before reaching a decision to embark on a protest.

Meanwhile, the NLC has rejected the advice of the Department of State Services (DSS) to shelve the nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and 28.

I’m a statement on Wednesday evening, NLC president described the advice as unsolicited adding that it would proceed with the protest the hardship currently being faced by most Nigerians.

No Going Back On Nationwide Protest, Labour Replies DSS

by Folarin Kehinde February 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The leadership of the organised labour on Wednesday took a swipe at the Department of State Services (DSS) over its warning that the movement should shelve its proposed protest billed to hold February 27 and 28.

The secret police had earlier counseled the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its counterpart from Trade Union Congress (TUC) to rescind their decision, saying the plea was in the interest of the country.

But reacting to the DSS’ warning, the president of NLC, Joe Ajaero, said the secret police should not blackmail the organised labour and arrest those that want to use the opportunity of the protest to foment crisis and by extension, widespread violence as claimed.

Ajaero said history would not forgive the labour movement and its leadership if it sits idly and allows the current hardship to continue festering due to non-chalant attitude of the Nigerian government and its officials.

The labour leader, who described the forthcoming action as “peaceful protest against unpardonable cost of living”, added that the Congress would not fold its arm while Nigerians continue to live in penury.

“We are concerned by the unsolicited advice of the Department of State Security to shelve our planned protest against the unprecedented high cost of living in spite of the indescribable suffering in the land, spiralling inflation, deepening poverty and the Naira at an exchange rate of N1,900 to the US Dollar.

“According to the Service, the planned protest should be shelved “in the interest of peace and public order”, pre-supposing that the action is intended to be violent and disruptive even when we have a history of peaceful protests.

“More worrying is the new role the Service has assigned to itself, the chief spokes person of the government.

“According to the Service, “It is common knowledge that all levels of Government are striving to ameliorate the prevailing economic condition and as such, should be given a benefit of the doubt, So far, appropriate authorities are working assiduously with a spectrum of stakeholders to fashion out modalities to address the current difficulties”.

“We are equally worried that although the “Service is aware that some elements are planning to use the opportunity of the protest to foment crisis and by extension, widespread violence”, and yet have not executed the arrest of these elements.

“We are equally intrigued by the innuendos of the Service, their philosophy of “peace” and wild allegations and we want to reassure them that no one loves this country more than us and on our honour, we would never do anything that will compromise its sovereignty or security.

“Having said this, we would not have ourselves blackmailed or lied against by the Service. Our protest is a peaceful one against the unpardonable cost of living of which the unserviced personnel of the Service are also victims. We cannot fold our hands and pretend all is well. That will be a grievous conspiracy that history will not forgive.”

BREAKING: Police release Labour Party chairman, Julius Abure

by Folarin Kehinde February 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Police has released the national chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, who was arrested on Wednesday in Benin city, the Edo State capital.

According to the Police, Abure was arrested over a petition accusing him of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit dangerous harm.

The Police also accused Abure of illegal possession of firearms.

Speaking after his release, Abure said: “No struggle to liberate a country comes easy. Many countries of the world where freedom fighters have fought for the emancipation of the people suffer injustice, suffer prosecution and it is what is happening to me and my other colleagues since after the general election.

“After the general election, they have tried to instigate crisis in the party, they tried to bring false accusations against us. They have come to talk about forgery at a time, when it did not work, they came with embezzlement.

“Any person that is aggrieved within the party, they go and instigate them to write petition and to make trouble. And the irony is that the police even act on those things (but) at the end of the day, they will find out that those things are false.

“Yesterday, we were making arrangements for the primaries and of course the police swamped on us, arrested us over what I would not want to discuss now because investigation is going on and therefore, I do not want to preempt them.

“But I must state clearly that following several interventions, they have graciously released me on bail,” he added.

OLUWAROTIMI ODUNAYO AKEREDOLU – A TRIBUTE

by Folarin Kehinde February 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

by Adetokunbo Kayode CON. SAN

The Art of Life is about living. Time is never long enough. Money is never adequate. Nothing is ever perfect. Just do your bit. And be ready to meet your maker…

These thoughts seem to capture the essence of the man I have to say these few words about. The man who calls me TOKSEEEE!

Rotimi ‘Aketi’ Akeredolu was not only a respected leader, a quintessential Bar man and accomplished individual, he was a committed nationalist just as he was an Oodua to the core. He showed that these two qualities were possible to hold together in the spirit of Awoism.

Aketi, his lifelong nickname, was easily and meritoriously honoured by this nation as a Commander of The Order of the Niger. A honour he very well deserved. A honour that captured his very essence. He was a Commander of men, and of ideas.

By Ondo Yoruba standards, Aketi died a young man, below seventy years. But then we see that it is never how long, but how well. Within the time allotted to him by the Almighty, he achieved more than most who lived even up to eighty or more years.

Aketi’s contributions to the legal profession, as a Senior Advicate of Nigeria (SAN), a Life Bencher, and his service first as Attorney-General of Ondo State and later as Governor of Ondo State, will be remembered and cherished.

Having attained the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Rotimi Akeredolu exemplified excellence and professionalism in the practice of law. He served as an inspiration for many aspiring lawyers and a role model for colleagues within the NBA.

Rotimi Akeredolu SAN left a lasting impact on the legal profession through his dedicated service to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). As the 24th President of the NBA, he served NBA with commitment and integrity. His tireless efforts towards the advancement of the legal community were commendable. His expertise and guidance helped shape the legal profession.

As Governor of Ondo State, Aketi made significant contributions to national security through the establishment of the Amotekun corps which was aimed at enhancing security and safeguarding the lives and properties of the people in the state, in the Southwest and in Nigeria. This initiative demonstrated his commitment to the well-being of the citizens and his proactive approach in addressing security challenges. His legacy in the field of national security will and must undoubtedly continue to inspire this and future generations.

Aketi loved life and living. Which is just very well because life is a storm. An ephemeral storm. He never tried to calm the storm. Only Jesus could do that. He would rather calm himself as every storm must pass. Aketty’s storm has passed. He is calm where he is now.

Aketi was not perfect. Only the Almighty God is. But he strove to do his best. Ultimately that is what matters most. And that’s the lesson we all must imbibe.

So during this sorrowful time, I offer my deepest condolences to all of us, family, friends, and colleagues. Let all of us find comfort in the legacy of Oluwarotimi “Aketi” Akeredolu. His service to Ondo state, Southwest Nigeria and Nigeria endures as a testament to his zest for life, his humanity, his dedication, his passion, and his outstanding contributions.

Niger state government workers commence indefinite strike amidst economic hardship

by Folarin Kehinde February 21, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Government workers in Niger State have initiated an indefinite strike action in response to the state government’s failure to meet their demands.

The strike was directed by the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) following unsuccessful negotiations with the government.

The NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) issued a directive on Monday for civil servants to embark on an indefinite strike due to the state government’s alleged failure to address issues related to workers’ welfare and effective governance.

The demands presented by organized labour include the reversal of political appointments in various agencies, including Executive Directors of Finance, Operations, and Administration.

They also called for the reversal of appointments in the Local Government Service Commission and Civil Service Commission, as well as the withdrawal of appointments of directors-general in government agencies.

The labour unions emphasized the need for a clear statement from the government on the payment of wage awards and cautioned against appointing unqualified individuals as permanent secretaries.

They also urged the government to withdraw the appointment of a vice principal on secondment as a permanent secretary to allow for career progression within the civil service.

In response to the impending strike, the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, announced a meeting with the labour unions to address the contentious issues.

He assured that the government was committed to resolving the issues in the state’s best interest and maintaining a cordial relationship with organized labour.

The meeting was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon to avert the strike.

DSS warns labour leaders to shun planned nationwide protests

by Folarin Kehinde February 21, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Department of State Services (DSS) in Nigeria has called on the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider their planned nationwide protests scheduled for February 27 and 28.

The protests are intended to address the challenges of hardship and the rising cost of living in the country.

While acknowledging the legitimate right of the labour movement to protest, the DSS urged them to prioritiseprioritise dialogue and negotiation over demonstrations to avoid potential tensions and violence.

The statement expressed concern that some elements might exploit the protests to foment crisis and escalate violence, worsening the socio-economic situation in the country.

The DSS emphasised the ongoing efforts by various levels of government to address economic challenges and urged citizens to allow authorities to handle the current difficulties.

The security agency also called on political parties, opposition groups, religious and traditional institutions, civil society, and citizens to eschew violence and promote peace in challenging times.

“Making political capital out of the current situation or involving in divisive utterances at a time like this will be of no benefit to any peace-loving Nigerian.

“Citizens are advised to be vigilant and not allow fifth columnists and hostile forces or agents to use them to destabilise the peace of the nation.

“The DSS stands opposed to violence as a means of settling our present-day challenges, be they economic, political or otherwise. Accordingly, the Service will work with sister security and law enforcement agencies to ensure that lasting peace is maintained in the country,” DSS Director of Public Relations & Strategic Communications, Peter Afunanya, said in the statement.

BREAKING: Developers reject N8,000 cement price

by Folarin Kehinde February 21, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Developers in the built industry have rejected the agreement reached between the Federal Government and cement manufacturers.

At the meeting, it was resolved that prices of cement will be reduced to between
N7,000 and N8,000.

In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, the President of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria, Dr. Aliyu Wamakko, said the reduction was not good for the economy.

He said, “I do not think that is good for the economy of this country because cement constitutes the primary product for any building construction to be done.

“The Chief Executive Officer of BUA Cement, Abdul Samad Rabiu, promised Nigerians that by January 1, 2024, the cement price would be slashed to N3,500, so what is the problem.

According to him, most of the components of cement are sourced locally.

“Why should the price be reduced to N8,000? Anything above N5,000 is not beneficial for the economy and it would not bring any positive impact towards the reduction in the 28 million housing deficit,” he added.

Wamakko noted that the price should be brought down to N5,000 for any meaningful thing to be done.

He added, “At N8,000, most of the building projects in the country would be uncompleted. There must be a review of abandoned buildings all over the country, most especially the ones in 2023.

“90 per cent of cement is sourced locally, so I do not understand why the cement should go up to that price.”

In a similar vein, the Executive Secretary, Association of Housing Corporation in Nigeria, Toye Eniola, condemned the negotiation.

He said, “What is fair in N7,000 to N8,000, when BUA promised us a slash from over N5,500 to N3,500 and now they are negotiating N8,000? Where are we heading to?

“That negotiation is for the rich. What they are saying is with that price, housing is going not to be for the poor. With that price, there is no poor man that would be able to afford it and it would keep widening the deficit gap.

“The way forward is to go back to the basics, this is the time to embrace local building materials, for instance, we have interlocking blocks and we require about 5 per cent of cement for this which would save us a lot of money.

“Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute has done a lot of research on alternative building materials that can be used in Nigeria, for instance, they have done research on the use of bamboo as an alternative to the iron rod.”

Eniola said it was high time the country began to embrace local building materials as opposed to imported ones dictated by forex.

Also, the Chief Executive Officer, Cromwell Professional Services International Limited, Sola Enitan, said the reduction was poor.

He said, “The reduction is still not it, the manufacturers may think they are saving people money, but it is all bullshit as far as I am concerned.

“In one month, cement moved from N5,000 to N8,000, I believe that the government would begin to feel the pinch further, because the circle goes round.”

According to him, if people are not able to build housing, and there’s an increment in rent, the later part of 2024 and 2025 would be very harsh.

He added, “Rents would go up, intervention areas of government would be to build all their bungalows without cement and use cement sparingly, so that the cement manufacturers took would feel the pinch.”

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer, Octo5 Holdings, Jide Odusolu, queried the slash in cement price earlier promised by BUA cement.

He said, “BUA made audio promises, I would like to see who or where they supplied cement at N3,500 per bag – we never got it and we tried!

“Low-income earners ought to benefit from government-funded (not built) social housing stock.”

He added, “Reading the post-meeting report, it would seem they blamed the cost of gas, bad roads, and cost of transport. Personally, the only new element that is possibly defensible is the gas cost.

“The government should engage Nigerian Gas Company and other gas producers to design a mechanism for benchmarking gas for local use in naira.

“It makes no sense that a nation that still flares gas in 2024 still makes it too expensive for urgently required local production. Secondly, we must move from reliance on bagged cement and start producing concrete.”

Cement Manufacturers had on Monday agreed to sell a 50kg bag of cement at a retail price between N7,000 and N8,000, depending on location nationwide.

“The cement manufacturers, however, asked the government to address the challenges of gas shortage, import duty, smuggling, and road network,” they said in a statement.
