Ramadan: Stop anti-government sermons, President Tinubu begs Islamic clerics

by Folarin Kehinde March 8, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has reportedly urged governors to provide financial incentives to Islamic clerics during the Ramadan fasting period to discourage sermons critical of his government.

Peoples Gazette reports that the president is concerned about potential sermons that could provoke public dissent amid widespread challenges, including hunger, insecurity, and economic crises.

Accordsing to the report, a confidential memo sent on Tinubu’s behalf by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume, urged governors to engage religious leaders, civil society organizations (CSOs), and the Nigeria Council of Ulamas to promote peaceful coexistence during Ramadan.

The memo emphasized the need to moderate Islamic preachers to prevent comments that could mislead followers or incite opposition against the government.

The memo highlights the delicate situation in Nigeria, where economic hardships, rising inflation, and security challenges have fueled public frustration.

With the potential for anti-government sentiments to escalate during the holy month of Ramadan, the president seeks strategies to manage dissent and promote a positive image.

written by Folarin Kehinde

The House of Representatives has mandated its committees to investigate the non-remittance of N5 trillion to the Federal Government by some businesses operating in Nigeria.

The decision to go after the tax defaulters followed the adoption of a motion moved by Esosa Iyawe on Thursday during plenary.

The House resolved to mandate the Committees on Public Account and Finance to probe the non-remittance by the organizations and recover the money owed the government.

Moving the motion, Iyawe said 5,000 companies owe the Federal Government N5.2 trillion between 2015 and 2019.

He said that there is another report stating that in 2021, some companies failed to remit over N17 billion.

“Audit reports from 2015 to 2019 which revealed government agencies owing hundreds of billions in FIRS taxes comprising underpayments and under-recoveries and over 5,000 Companies and Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government owing (N5.2 Trillion) (five trillion, two hundred billion, Naira in withholding taxes,” he said.

He stated that some of the culprits are multinational corporations that the Federal Government is treating with kid gloves, while small businesses are subjected to multiple taxes.

The motion was taken unanimously without opposition.

The House directed the committees to report back to the in four weeks.

JUST IN: Documents Emefiele used to request $6.2m payment for observers forged – Analyst

by Folarin Kehinde March 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A forensic analyst has confirmed that the documents former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele used to request the payment of $ 6.2 million for foreign election observers were forged.

The analyst stated this on Thursday when the trial of the former apex bank chief resumed before Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.

The witness, Bamaiyi Meriga, called by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), informed the court that following forensic analysis of the disputed documents, he discovered that there was clear evidence of forgery of signature, and the seal of execution was different from the original.

He also confirmed that the signatures were not those of former President Muhammadu Buhari and ex-Secretary General of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.

The two documents, Presidential Directive on Foreign Observer Election and Presidential Directive on Foreign Observer Election, were tendered in evidence and were admitted in evidence by the trial judge, Justice Muazu.

Under cross-examination by counsel for Emefiele, the witness said he was not a staff of the EFCC and was not being paid by the anti-graft agency, but his salary was domiciled with the Nigeria Immigration Service.

Counsel for Emefiele, Matthew Burkaa, expressed displeasure over the witness’s conduct, saying that the witness misled the court by evading questions.

The trial has been adjourned till March 11 for continuation.

Emefiele is standing trial before Justice Muazu on 20-count amended charges bordering on corrupt advantages, conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, forgery and obtaining by false pretences to the tune of $6,230,000.

He was accused of impersonating former SGF Mustapha to obtain a sum of $6.2m illegally.

In mid-February, ex-SGF Mustapha testified before the court.

He said he knew nothing about the transaction until he left office at the end of May 2023, adding that having served for five years and seven months, the document in contention didn’t emanate from the office of then-President Buhari.

JUST IN: I am ready to resign for peace to reign in Rivers state, says Gov Fubara

by Folarin Kehinde March 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Sim Fubara has expressed his willingness to give up his office for peace in Rivers State.

The political crisis between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been ongoing.

Despite an intervention by President Bola Tinubu, the crisis has persisted.

Speaking to AIT, Governor Fubara stated, “No sacrifice will be too big for me to pay for the success of this administration.

The reason is very simple: it is not political love. It is not because I want to gain any favour from anybody. My interest and love for our dear state are genuine.”

He emphasized that his concern lies with the millions of Rivers people who have made sacrifices, and he worries that their hopes are being dashed.

Governor Fubara clarified that if resigning from his position would bring more peace to the state, he is willing to do so.

He underscored that his decision is not about personal interests but about the well-being and stability of Rivers State.

Governor Fubara also acknowledged the importance of maturity in leadership, highlighting his restraint in the face of crisis despite having the power to take specific actions that could have escalated tensions.

“I am the governor. No matter what it is, there are things I could have done, and there would have been a total crisis, but the ability to restrain in the face of crisis when you have the power to do things is maturity,” he added.

BREAKING: Power Minister summons AEDC, IBEDC, TCN over erratic electricity supply

by Folarin Kehinde March 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu has summoned the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), and the Managing Director of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to a ‘crucial meeting’ over erratic electricity supply facing the country.

Weeks ago, Adelabu, had identified the root cause of the ongoing electricity blackout as the shortage of gas supply to electricity generation companies and outstanding debts owed to producers.

On his verified X page on Wednesday, March 6, Adelabu said: “As the Minister of Power, I am deeply concerned about the deteriorating electricity supply across the country.

“In response to this pressing issue, I have summoned the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), as well as the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to a crucial meeting.

“The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the worsening power supply in their respective regions and to collectively find lasting solutions.

“It is disheartening to witness the decline in power supply despite the concerted efforts to improve the situation. The Ministry has been exerting pressure on the Generating Companies (GENCOs) to enhance their performance, resulting in a recent increase in generation to over 4000MW.

“Despite this progress, certain distribution companies are failing to adequately distribute the power supplied by TCN, while vandalism of power infrastructure exacerbates the problem in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.”

Adelabu offered reassurance to Nigerians, stating that measures are being taken to address these challenges, leading to a gradual increase in the availability of electricity across the nation.

He added: “Moving forward, I am committed to holding all distribution companies accountable for their performance. Willful non-performance will not be tolerated, and severe consequences, including license revocation, may be imposed. Additionally, I have instructed TCN to prioritize repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions.
