BREAKING: Tinubu suspends Fubara, deputy others for 6 months

……declares state of emergency in Rivers State

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially declared a state of emergency in Rivers State.

This is in reaction to the political crisis that have engulfed Rivers State.

Leading reporters reports that the President made the declaration in a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday.

“The state has been at a standstill since the crisis started,” Tinubu said.

The president stated that he made personal intervention to resolve the crisis in the state but his efforts have been ignored.

A retired military chief, Ekwe Ibas, has been selected to oversee the state’s affairs once the emergency is declared.

The move comes amid escalating violence between former Governor Nyesom Wike and the current Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as the two continue their protracted political feud.

Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has reportedly been attempting to unseat Fubara, intensifying the political tensions in the state.

Following the unrest, major petrol pipelines in the state were sabotaged by suspected militants.

The increasing violence and instability have prompted the federal government to consider drastic measures to restore order in the oil-rich state.

John Mahama: Ghana president’s X account hacked

by Folarin Kehinde March 18, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ghana’s President John Mahama’s verified X account was hacked for 48 hours, with cybercriminals using it to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency project.

The President’s spokesperson confirmed the development on Tuesday.

The breach, which began on Saturday, was first noticed on Sunday when the compromised account started posting endorsements for Solanafrica, falsely claiming to be “led by Ghana’s President John Mahama to make payments across Africa free using the Solana blockchain.”

The hackers urged Mahama’s followers to invest in the scheme, claiming it was an initiative to revolutionise financial transactions on the continent.

The fraudulent posts were deleted after the President’s team noticed the breach, but the account continued sharing crypto-related content, including hints about the launch of a new memecoin.

“The President’s X account was compromised, and we have taken action to regain control,” spokesman Kwakye Ofosu told AFP on Tuesday.

“The account has now been fully restored, and we urge the public to disregard any suspicious cryptocurrency-related posts from the handle.”

The breach highlights growing concerns over the rise of crypto-related scams in Africa, where digital assets have gained popularity, but regulatory oversight remains weak.

Scammers frequently hijack verified accounts to push fake investment opportunities.

“My team has restored my account, working with the X support team. Thank you for your enquiries and offers to assist,” Mahama posted on the X account on Tuesday.

In July 2023, South African opposition leader Julius Malema’s X account was hacked and used to promote a fraudulent token project. Similarly, in 2022, Nigerian businessman Tony Elumelu’s account was compromised, flooding his timeline with bogus crypto giveaways.

Cybersecurity experts warn that high-profile figures must tighten security measures to prevent such breaches.

“Prominent personalities, especially those in government, need to implement stringent backend security checks,” said Abubakar Issaka, a cybersecurity expert at Ghana’s Centre for Cyberwatch and Data Protection.

“Two-factor authentication alone is no longer enough. They must also monitor log-in activities, limit third-party app access, and have a dedicated team ensuring 24/7 surveillance of their accounts to detect and neutralise any suspicious activity before it escalates,” he told AFP.

Solana has gained traction in Africa due to its lower transaction fees compared to Bitcoin and Ethereum, and scammers have increasingly used its name to swindle investors.

Ofosu said authorities had taken necessary steps to prevent further misuse of Mahama’s account.

Trump sacks Voice of America, other US-owned media house staff

by Folarin Kehinde March 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Donald Trump’s administration on Sunday began mass layoffs at Voice of America and other US-funded media, making clear its intent to gut outlets long seen as critical for US influence.

Just a day after all employees were put on leave, staff working on a contractual basis received an email notifying them that they were terminated at the end of March.

The email, confirmed to AFP by several employees, told contractors that “you must cease all work immediately and are not permitted to access any agency buildings or systems.”

Contractors make up much of VOA’s workforce and dominate staffing in the non-English language services, although recent figures were not immediately available.

Many contractors are not US citizens, meaning they likely depend on their soon-to-disappear jobs for visas to stay in the United States.

Most full-time VOA staff, who have more legal protections, were not immediately terminated but remain on administrative leave and have been told not to work.

Voice of America, created during World War II, broadcast around the world in 49 languages with a mission to reach countries without media freedom.

Liam Scott, a VOA reporter who covers press freedom and disinformation, said he was notified that he also reported that he was being dismissed as of March 31.

The Trump administration’s destruction of VOA and sister outlets “are part of its efforts to dismantle the government more broadly — but it’s also part of the administration’s broader assault on press freedom and the media,” he wrote on X.

“I’ve covered press freedom for a long time, and I’ve never seen something like what’s happened in the US over the past couple of months.”

With VOA in limbo, some of its services have switched to playing music for lack of new programming.

In an editorial on the demise of VOA, China’s state-run Global Times said that “the monopoly of information held by some traditional Western media is being shattered.”

“As more Americans begin to break through their information cocoons and see a real world and a multidimensional China, the demonizing narratives propagated by VOA will ultimately become a laughingstock of the times,” it said.

BREAKING: Rivers Assembly moves to impeach Fubara

by Folarin Kehinde March 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Rivers State House of Assembly has served a notice of alleged misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, marking the process to impeach them.

A notice obtained from the Assembly on Monday revealed that the lawmakers claimed the action was in line with the Nigerian Constitution.

The notice said the move was “in compliance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and other extant laws.”

The notice has lent credence to speculations that the governor might be impeached following the Supreme Court ruling that recognised 27 lawmakers loyal to Fubara’s estranged successor, formal governor Nyesom Wike.

Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, had also last week during a media chat, said Fubara should be impeached if found wanting accordingly.

“Politics is not play. If he has done something to be impeached, let them impeach him. It’s not a criminal offence,” Wike stated.

2027: Jandor returns to APC

by Folarin Kehinde March 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, the 2023 Lagos State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has announced his return to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Adediran, along with his supporters, announced this on Monday, at a media briefing held at Liberty Place, Adeniyi Jones Street, Ikeja, Lagos.

This comes after a closed-door meeting between Jandor and President Bola Tinubu in Aso Rock, Abuja, last week where undisclosed matters were discussed.

Before meeting Tinubu, Jandor also held talks with several political leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former military President Ibrahim Babangida, former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and 2023 SDP Presidential Candidate, Adewole Adebayo.

Jandor previously resigned from the PDP, citing indiscipline and anti-party activities, betrayal by the party leadership on the eve of the Lagos governorship election and false claims of an alliance that misled PDP supporters into voting for another candidate.

Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has described his father as the greatest president in Nigeria’s history.

In a video that went viral on Monday, Seyi made the remark while addressing a gathering of youths in Adamawa State.

“It was never politics, but they keep coming for me, they keep coming for my family, they keep coming for your father, they keep coming for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the greatest president in the history of Nigeria,” he said.

He further praised his father’s leadership, claiming he had prioritised youth empowerment and economic growth.

“He is the only president that has kept your people at home, from when he was governor to when be became president, the only president that considers youths, the only president that created a platform for young people to fly.

“The only president that created an economy that has benefitted everybody, the only president that is not trying to enrich his own pocket,” he stated.

Seyi has recently been seen distributing food items during visits to northern states.

Earlier in March, he joined Kano residents, including the state chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Hashimu Dugurawa, in breaking the Ramadan fast.

He has also visited Yobe State as part of his engagements with youths.
