6 days after forum in S/Arabia, Tinubu’s whereabout unknown

by Folarin Kehinde May 5, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Saturday was exactly six days after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attended the World Economic Forum’s (WEF’s) Special Meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth and Energy for Development in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and he is yet to return to Nigeria.

The two-day forum, which aimed to help public and private sector leaders address shared global challenges, opened on Sunday, 28th and ended on Monday, 29th April, 2024.

The Presidency has not released any statement on what was holding the president from returning to Nigeria.

This has led to speculations in some quarters that the president may have proceeded to Paris, France, where he had travelled to several times for medicals.

However, two credible sources have independently told Daily Trust that the president proceeded to London from the Saudi capital of Riyadh.

One of our two sources, a highly placed official at the Presidency, told one of our reporters yesterday that the president “is at the moment in London on a private visit.”

The official, who asked not to be mentioned, declined further comments on the reason for the president’s visit in London.

“I really don’t know, he (the president) has left Saudi Arabia and he should be in London now, but I don’t have details.

“I don’t have an idea about it (the purpose of the president’s trip to London), but I think it is a private visit,” the official said.

Another top official at the Presidential Villa said there was no cause for alarm about the president’s whereabouts.

The official, who refused to disclose his boss’ whereabouts, assured that the president would return to the country “this weekend.”

The president had, on April 23, left Abuja for the Kingdom of the Netherlands on an official visit.

His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, had, in a statement, said the visit was on the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

Ngelale had said that while in the Netherlands, Tinubu would engage in high-level discussions with the Prime Minister and hold separate meetings with His Royal Majesty, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Kingdom.

“While in the Netherlands, the president will participate in the Nigerian-Dutch Business and Investment Forum, that will bring together heads of conglomerates and organisations in both countries to explore opportunities for collaboration and partnerships, especially in agriculture and water management towards innovative solutions for sustainable farming practices,” he had stated.

Ngelale had added that Tinubu would, as part of the official visits, also proceed to attend a special WEF meeting scheduled for April 28-29 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The special meeting in Riyadh was to among other objectives, bridge the growing North-South divide, which has further widened on issues such as emerging economic policies, the energy transition and geopolitical shocks.

Marketers summon emergency meeting over fuel scarcity

by Folarin Kehinde May 5, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

As fuel scarcity deepens across the country, marketers under the aegis of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria have said their National Executive Council would be meeting officially on Monday to find a lasting solution to the problem.

Speaking exclusively with Sunday PUNCH on Saturday, the National President of IPMAN, Hammed Fashola, said that Monday’s meeting became expedient following the prevalence of fuel scarcity despite recent aggressive moves by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

Fashola told our correspondent that the NNPC, which is the sole importer of petroleum products in the country, opened up its reserves in all existing depots across the country on Friday in a bid to ease off the long queues at the fuel stations.

Even before then, the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria had in a statement confirmed receiving 300 million litres of fuel from eight vessels during the week, which it said has been distributed to its members in Apapa and other locations in Lagos.

Recall that the South-West Regional Coordinator of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Ayo Cardoso, had also said that aside from the 240 million litres offloaded at various depots on Monday, close to 85 million litres of petrol was offloaded as of Tuesday evening.

But speaking to our correspondent on Saturday, Fashola said the Monday meeting is to assess how far the recent moves have gone in addressing the scarcity of petroleum products across the country and that the oil marketers would further engage the NNPC with outcomes of the meeting.

“We are meeting on Monday officially with other marketers. We are working closely with NNPC. The Monday meeting is for our National Executive Council. After the meeting, we will reach out to the NNPC. We talk with them every day,” he stated.

On the likely subject of the Monday meeting, he said, “It will be to assess the present situations. We evaluate what we have done so far. We will look at what is happening in the cities; assess the situations to know what to do again.”

“The meetings we have been having with the NNPC are in collaboration, which we have been doing. If you notice, yesterday (Friday), NNPC opened up their reserves in all the depots throughout the federation. And we are working with them to ensure that everywhere is wet so that this thing (scarcity) can disappear.

“I want to commend NNPC for their proactive measures. We are equally giving them the necessary support we are supposed to give them as oil marketers. I want to use this opportunity to appeal to members of the public to stop panic buying. They should buy what they need. Once they buy what they need, you will see that the long queues will disappear. So we are trying to discourage that (hoarding),” he stated.

We started within FCT, speaking to other States, we inaugurate operation there, commence operation, and operatives within that State will now be fused in to work with them and lead those who are supposed to mann that State and we proceed to other States.

On strategies been implemented to prevent illegal mining and mineral theft.

“The scope of our operation is principally anchored on ensuring full compliance to extant laws .Talking about Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act of 2007 and Mining regulation of 2007 and contained in this document are the relevant provisions that must be complied with by all intending investors in the sector or miners or companies or individuals who want to carry out one or two activities within the sector. The Ministry of Solid Minerals is the home of mining activities, whatever you do is regulated by the Ministry of Solid Minerals. Our duty is to ensure enforcement of these regulations that is already known to all miners.”

“Where we have intelligence about illegal mining depending on the nature of the case, sometimes there are peculiar situations, we will write letter of invitations served on the companies and give them specific time and when we invite them we invite them in agreement of investigative activities and by so doing we will be able to unearth their level of compliance and we liaise with Ministry of Solid Minerals where relevant as well as mining cadastre office and this has helped in cases we have handled including in cases we have charged to court.

We notify that we don’t require anything asides maximum cooperation that will ensure full compliance to mining regulations and the whole essence of this is that we are able to contribute our own quota to ensuring that the dwindling revenue within the mining sector is improved.”

Speaking on how the Mining Marshals collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to achieve their goals.

“Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps is one security organisation that believes in synergy and every unit, department in NSCDC observes this to the later because it is the cardinal focus of the commandant general that in fighting insecurity there must be synergy sand cooperation amongst sister security agencies, so that is also transmitted to the Mining Marshals”.

We have community leader’s cooperating with us; it all boils down to approach. Community leaders are stake holder’s insecurity, it’s their domain, and we educate them to achieve results.

He also said the Mining Marshals are poised to using technology “in the team we have drone pilots, there are some terrain that are not motarable, we have a case in view now and for security reasons and intelligence ,I won’t disclose the location, the advanced intelligence sent to that location we realised that over 18 to 20km before the location is not motarable, you can only go there on bike, it will take the aid of a drone pilot and his team to ensure that you get adequate mapping of the terrain to have a well informed operational decision to be carried out, the Mining Marshal is fully aware of the role and importance of technology in effective execution of this task and assignment.”

Gospel artiste, Bidemi Olaoba apologises to white garment churches over use of candles, perfumes for prayers

by Folarin Kehinde May 4, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A renowned gospel artiste, Bidemi Olaoba, has apologised to white garment churches following a video that sparked controversy on social media platforms.

Olaoba, in an interview with Pastor Lekan Adeboye during a TV live show tagged ‘Confession Box with PLA’, said he can never perform in a church where they use scents and burn incense.

According to him, the reason he will never accept to perform in any white garment church is because of the usage of candles, perfumes, and some other spiritual materials during prayers and services.

But in his apologies, Olaoba emphasised his belief in the universality of the gospel and expressed regret for any misunderstanding caused by his previous remarks.

Olaoba clarified that the church mentioned in the video was not a white garment church, despite misconceptions.

He urged viewers to watch the full video on YouTube to grasp the context accurately.

Olaba said, “Whilst I urge you to search, watch, and analyse the full video on YouTube, please allow me to urge you to disregard such insinuation. The body of Christ is one and indissoluble to which I am a proud member.

“I have been commissioned by the author and finisher of my faith to be an instrument of praise that will bring the saint and the sinners to the presence of God for salvation. One Love, God bless you.”

Highlighting his connections with the Celestial Church of Christ, Olaoba stressed his respect for the body of Christ and acknowledged his performance at the Lully Concert, a significant event organised by the CCC.

He said, “The church I was referring to when I was asked that question was not even a white garment church in the first place. And I didn’t mention white garments in the video. Please I like you to watch the full video to understand the full context. I was trying to avoid the name of that church and that was why I didn’t want to mention the name.

“That was why I qualified them with those things that I said in the video. So, I want to urge you to please go watch the full video on YouTube. So that you can understand it fully.

“I had ministered at the Lully Concert which happens to be a mega concert of CCC. I have a lot of friends that are from the church. Three of my band members are from the Celestial Church of Christ. So, I have nothing against CCC because I believe that the body of Christ is one as I said earlier.

“So, it’s not only Celestial Church that uses those things that I mentioned in the video. I did not even mention Celestial – that is the funny thing. So I don’t know why you know this narrative is going this way.”

Immediately after his interview went viral, stakeholders in the Celestial Church of Christ Worldwide reacted and condemned his comment.

Also, some youths of the church asked members to unfollow the gospel musician on social media.

A Facebook page, CelestialFocus directed members to unfollow Olaoba.

The post on the page states, “If you belong to any white garments churches, please kindly unfollow Bidemi Olaoba.”

A commenter on the post identified as Itunuoluwa Olaotan, said, “Best decision. You have to choose between him and Celestial. For he has blasphemed and antagonised us.

“Only non-Celestials are against this opinion here. A real Celestial must unfollow him right now! Just to let him realise what he has done.”

Flooding: Benue govt to demolish over 800 houses on waterways, drainages

by Folarin Kehinde May 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Benue State Urban Development Board (BSUDB) is set to demolish over 800 houses and shanties built on waterways and drainges in the state capital, Makurdi.

The General Manager of the Board, Mede Ternongo made this known after leading his team to pull down illegal structures and shanties in Makurdi.

He said the move was part of efforts by the present administration to check flooding and also restore the masterplan of the state capital.

Ternongo explained that the first phase of the exercise which commenced Thursday saw the removal of over 40 shanties and illegal structures in the town.

He assured that every structure on access road in any part of the town would be pulled down cautioned developers to desist from erecting illegal structures in the town without approval from the board.

“We intend to open the roads, major access routes in the city. We just started with the South Bank area of Makurdi and very soon we will move to North Bank area of the town,” he said.

“If you go to North Bank area around the Catholic Church, you will seen containers lying on the fence and it has reduced the road side and defaced the environment.

“Enough notices were served on the affected people because we do not remove or demolish any property without giving notification. This time around, we involved the media. We did radio announcements for two weeks informing the general public about this and told the owners of those shanties to remove them.

“Therefore the notice has beeen there for more than two months before we embarked on today’s exercise.

“The Governor has graciously provided us with necessary logistics to be able to carry out this exercise, we also get support from the construction firm that is undertaking construction works in the state.

“The Governor has also promised to give us bulldozers and payloaders and operational vehicles to ease our job.”

Continuing, he said: “We have about 800 houses built on water ways that have been earmarked for demolition. Just recently we visited a community around the naval road in Kashio layout and all the buildings that were located around the waterways and drainages were touched and we were able to open up the water channel in that part of the town.

“I have discussed with the Governor on the need to build a GSM village for the mobile phone dealers and I believe after this exercise I will go back to him and see how we can commence the building of the village. We have identified the spot and I have told him and he accepted.”

JUST IN: FG bans use of foreign syringes, needles in tertiary hospitals

by Folarin Kehinde May 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The federal government has issued a directive mandating that all federal tertiary hospital chief medical directors (CMDs) and medical directors (MDs) procure needles and syringes exclusively from NAFDAC-approved local manufacturers.

The directive, aimed at bolstering domestic production, was conveyed in a circular signed by the Minister of State for Health, Dr Tunji Alausa, on Friday.

Dr. Alausa said the directive was necessary for the survivial of local pharmaceutical industries that produce needles and syringes.

According to him, many of the domestic companies have faced severe challenges, with several having ceased operations due to the influx of substandard foreign goods into the market.

Consequently, the directive seeks to curtail the importation of foreign-manufactured needles and syringes and promote patronage of locally manufactured products.

In line with the directive, NAFDAC has been tasked with ceasing the issuance of licenses for importing foreign needles and syringes.

Furthermore, companies involved in such importation activities will be delisted moving forward.

“All our tertiary hospitals are hereby directed to procure needles and syringes for your hospital needs from only the NAFDAC-approved local manufacturers,” Dr. Alausa said in the circular.

The approved local manufacturers include EL-Salmat Pharmaceuticals Company Ltd (Salmaject), HMA Medical Ltd (Deleject), and Afrimedical Manufacturing and Supplies Ltd.

Additionally, Dr Alausa provided a list of distributors for the approved manufacturers across various states in the Federation to facilitate easy procurement processes for the respective institutions.

Repentant Boko Haram members break into Borno police station, free colleagues

by Folarin Kehinde May 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Some hoodlums, suspected to be repentant Boko Haram insurgents, have invaded a police station in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Tuesday, April 30.

The attack, leading reporters understands, was an attempt to set free their colleagues that were arrested earlier over alleged drug offences.

But Kenneth Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, who confirmed that there was an incident at the police station, said the assailants were repelled by officers on duty.

Daso said the security breach was heralded by an operation carried out by the police.

“On the 30/04/24 at about 1745hrs in a joint operation raid at the Kasuwar Fara, following an intelligence report that some drug peddlers, smokers, repentant and Boko Haram insurgents are indulging in nefarious activities, eight persons were arrested including seven male and a female in that operation with 476grams of illicit substances,” Daso said.

“As you know, such activities have been banned in the area by the state government since last year.

“Few hours after the arrest, some unscrupulous persons, so-called repentant Boko Haram, dressed up in military attire tried to invade our police station at Ibrahim Taiwo but were repelled immediately.

“Thereafter, they went and attacked Nigeria Immigration Service and NDLEA check points after the welcome to the township gate and they burnt it down,” he added.

Daso said a serious investigation is currently ongoing to unravel those who were behind the acts.

However, some eyewitnesses said the attackers, dressed in military camouflage and wielding cutlasses, forcefully gained access into the police station and whisked away some suspects.

“About 20 of the attackers forced their way into the police station and escaped with some of the detained members.

“They left some policemen on duty wounded; they also went on rampage attacking passers-by with cutlasses, before reinforcements by the CRACKS team arrived,” a source told DailyTrust.

Another witness said the police operatives in the station did their best to repel the attackers but were subdued.

“Some of the police operatives took to their heels but returned when reinforcements came. We were told that the actual suspects could not be freed, only some people at the counter escaped. It was a sad incident,” he said.

Residents in the area said they were scared by the development, saying the incident was a clear indication that Maiduguri is no longer safe.

Fanta Modu, who owns a restaurant around the area, urged the government to reconsider its approach to issues around the de-radicalisation exercise of the federal government.

CISLAC, CSOs knocks FG over anti-corruption fight, demands accountability, integrity among judges

by Folarin Kehinde May 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Civil Society Legislative Advisory Centre, (CISLAC), and other cohorts of civil society group has expressed their displeasure over Nigeria’s current democratic practice, anti-corruption fights by the government and the need for the judicial to uphold integrity in the system.

The group while speaking in Abuja on Thursday on the state of the fight against corruption in Nigeria and malicious attack on anti-corruption stated that transparency and accountability are crucial elements for a flourishing democracy adding that Nigeria’s so-called “democracy” has persistently functioned under a veil of secrecy and lawlessness.

The group explained that despite hopes and fights invested by millions of Nigerians to birth a democratic government, the management of the country’s resources has consistently disregarded the fundamental principles of democracy.

The group noted that they observe the malicious attacks and deliberate effort to blackmail anti-corruption agencies through influencing sponsorship, incentivised opinion publications in some national dailies, online and electronic platforms, targeted at discouraging anti-corruption progress and shielding the kleptocrats from thorough investigation.

“We are not unaware of surreptitious moves to backpedal anti-corruption progress with systemic undermining of the Anti-corruption Agencies through activities of corrupt judges, procurement of political power, misinformation on the anti-corruption effort and the undermining of subnational anti-corruption institutions.”

The group noted that judicial corruption constitutes a major challenge to anti-corruption work in Nigeria whereby looters have repeatedly used their influence to manipulate the judicial process and system, to block arrest or prosecution or to either dismiss or delay indefinitely the cases levelled against them.

“This blatant disregard for the rule of law has eroded public trust and reinforced the perception that Nigeria’s democracy is nothing more than a facade.

“Judiciary in Nigeria has not lived up to its enormous and important responsibility of protecting the common man and ensuring that the rule of law and provisions of the constitution are upheld.”

They maintained that procurement of political appointments by some suspected or investigated looters who are serving under the current administration as Ministers, Legislators, or occupying leadership positions of the ruling party, has exposed anti-corruption work to serious setback and deliberate sabotage that cripple efficiency of the Anti-corruption Agencies.

“It is unfortunate to see people with corruption cases and corruption allegations being appointed by the President to handle various positions of authority, some of such people have been elected and re-elected into office as well. Many serving law makers and ministers have corruption allegations on them.

“This is tarnishing the image of Nigeria both locally and international, frustrates the efforts of the anti-graft agencies and defeats the essence of political transparency and accountability.
Again, lack of transparency in the allocation of resources has resulted in widespread inequality and a growing divide between the rich and the poor.”

The group however noted that to effectively combat corruption and make significant strides towards progress, it is crucial to adopt a cohesive strategy that addresses its widespread influence throughout all levels of our society.

They maintained that the judiciary plays a crucial role as the final hope for justice hence it is essential for the judiciary to uphold its autonomy and resist any attempt that may undermine its integrity.

They added that adequate resource allocation to the Anti-corruption Agencies has become imperative to uphold their independence and enhance efficiency in the anti-corruption process adding that it is essential to prioritise adequate funding and support for Anti-corruption Agencies to prevent corruption and promote accountability.

They also urge the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun to promptly reinstate the police personnel withdrawn from the Kano anti-corruption Commission, to facilitate the effective execution of Commission’s duties adding that Nigeria Police must avoid actions that may portray it as being submissive to politicians.
