FRSC bans carrying fuel in vehicles to prevent fire incidents

by Folarin Kehinde May 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has imposed a ban on carrying fuel in vehicles in a bid to enhance road safety and minimize the risk of fire incidents.

The prohibition targets motorists, especially commercial drivers, who commonly transport fuel in jerricans while on the road.

The announcement was made by the FRSC sector commander, Christopher Kuje, during the launch of a sensitisation campaign at Omagwa along the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road in Ikwerre local government area of Rivers State.

Kuje stressed the urgency of the measure, citing the alarming rate of road traffic crashes resulting in vehicles being engulfed in flames.

He said: “The essence of the exercise was to create awareness on the dangers of carrying fuel in jerricans by commercial vehicles.

“This is so because we have had series of cases where vehicles involved in road traffic crashes were burnt to ashes, including the human beings inside.

“So, we don’t want a repeat of that. You know fire breaking out in vehicles involves three major elements or agents, namely; oxygen, heat and fuel.

“Even though some people talk about processes of chemical reactions, which made it four. Generally, these three major agents are the ones that actually lead to fire in case of road traffic crashes.

“So, what we are trying to do is to minimize the impact of fire incidents. That is the reason we said we should go out and create this awareness so that at the end of the day, drivers will stop loading fuel in their boots or inside their vehicles.

“You know when you have fuel inside your vehicle, the problem there is that the rubber can get heated and it can also get busted. Once that is done, a little spark or even heat can ignore fire. So, we want to avert this idea of needless death on the roads through careless attitudes and manners.”

Mining Marshals Seek National Support To Safeguard Mining Sites

by Folarin Kehinde May 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

By Hauwa Gidado, Abuja

Nigerians have been encouraged to support the newly established Mining Marshals – a security force tasked with safeguarding Mining sites across the country.

The Assistant Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps NSCDC who doubles as the Commander of the Mining Marshals, Mr. Attah Onoja, made the call during an exclusive interview with VON in Abuja, the Nation’s capital.

Mr. Onoja emphasized the Mining Marshals’ commitment of enforcing existing laws and working collaboratively with other law Enforcement Agencies and stakeholders to secure Mining sites.

“Nigerians should see the Mining Marshals as a Nigerian project, not an individual project, not a project of the Minister of Solid Minerals but a Nigerian project to save the mining sector, because mining sector needs to be revived, the Mining Marshals is a critical unit established by the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Dr. Abubakar Audi.

He also expressed Force’s readiness to apprehend anybody undermines the Mining Regulations in the country.

“The Mining marshals will stop at nothing in ensuring full compliance to existing laws governing mining regulations in Nigeria and whoever is found wanting regardless of position, the law will take its course.

“It’s a rare privilege to be on national assignment and we will have to account for this opportunity, so any body meeting us should know that we coming with this mind set to make mining sector safer”.

The Commander explained that, Mining Marshals were drawn from the Thirty-Six States and the Federal Capital Territory commands of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), with the primary responsibility of combating the illegal mining operations.

“From the commencement of operation the strength of Mining Marshal started 2,220 operatives cutting across the whole country in all the States, more operatives are coming in ,we are still on the phase of mobilising more men. All the State of the federation will be adequately taken care of in the terms of Mining marshals.”

Beginning

Speaking on the idea behind setting up of the Mining Marshals, ACC Onoja said “the Mining Marshals came up as a result of a pressing need of Nigeria as a nation to take adequate care of the mining sector and part of the core mandate of the Nigerian Civil and Defence Corps is protection of critical national assets and infrastructure. To this end there will be no agency that will be better positioned or poised to delivering such assignment or mandate other than NSCDC”.

He further said that the proactivness of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Abubakar Audi, mni in a bid to strengthen its role brought about the Mining Marshals in collaboration with the Ministry Of Solid Minerals Development

“Before now NSCD has been responsible for protecting National Critical Assets and infrastructure; it has a specialised unit that will meet a pressing demand, talking about deriving revenue from the mining sector, the activities of illegal miners in Nigeria.

“So NSCD came up with the idea of setting up the Mining Marshals and on the 1st of March (2024). It was officially inaugurated by the honourable minister of interior, Olubumi tunji-Ojo that marked the occasion of civil defence day in Nigeria.

“The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Oladele Alake decided that what NSCDC was doing is in line with his seven-point agenda of the Ministry of Solid Minerals, to address the illegal mining activities with the aid of Mining police that led to the official unveiling of this particular force (Mining Marshals).”

Strategies

Mr. Onoja said, the Mining Marshals were using effective strategies to prevent illegal mining and mineral theft.

“The scope of our operation is principally anchored on ensuring full compliance to the existing laws. Talking about Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act of 2007 and Mining regulations of 2007 and what also contained in this document are the relevant provisions that must be complied with by all intending investors in the sector or miners or companies or individuals who want to carry out one or two activities within the Mining sector, to ensure enforcement of these regulations to all miners’’.

“We have intelligent personnel that handle the illegal mining operators depending on the nature of the case, sometimes we write letters of invitation to the companies and give them specific time and they are expected to cooperate with our investigative activities.

Collaboration & Cooperation

Speaking on how the Mining Marshals collaborate with other Law Enforcement Agencies, Mining communities and other stakeholders to achieve our mandate, the commander said, synergy, intelligence sharing have been yielding fruits.

According to a report published by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), Nigeria is rich in solid mineral deposits, including gold, limestone, coal, iron ore, and tantalite, among others. However, despite this abundance, the sector remains largely underdeveloped and underutilized.

Observers say that the creation of the Mining Marshals and the progressive reforms being undertaken by the Ministry of Solid Minerals will help Nigeria unlock the full economic benefits of its rich and diverse solid mineral resources.

BREAKING: Edo speaker suspends Shaibu’s ally, two others over juju practice at Government house

by Folarin Kehinde May 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, on Monday suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach him and other principal officers of the Assembly.

One of the suspended lawmakers, Donald Okogbe, PDP, Akoko-Edo II, is an ally of the impeached deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, and was the only lawmaker who did not sign the petition that led to Shaibu’s impeachment.

The two others are Addeh Emankhu Isibor, APC, Esan North-East I, and Iyamu Bright, PDP, Orhionnwon II.

Agbebaku also accused the trio of bringing native doctors to the House on May 1 at around 1am to perform the sacrifice.

Agbebaku said the three lawmakers were suspended indefinitely, alleging that external forces were influencing them to cause chaos and remove the house’s leadership.

The suspension of the lawmakers, however, created tension in the House as the affected lawmakers kicked against their suspension.

In a rowdy session, the three suspended lawmakers were seen screaming, “Mr Speaker, you do not have the right to unilaterally suspend any member(s) of the house.

“You must call for votes. Allow members vote on the matter.”

The Speaker, thereafter, adjourned the plenary abruptly.

“I desire going back to school after tenure, not to a be godfather: Obaseki

by Folarin Kehinde May 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Godwin Obaseki says he wants to learn more, do research, and impart knowledge after his eighth year in office ends in Edo.

Mr Obaseki stressed that after completing his second term in Osadebey House, he will not attempt to be a godfather.

The incumbent Edo governor assumed power in 2016 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress. In his second coming, he lost favour with his so-called godfather, former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who, with the help of other party members, wrested the gubernatorial ticket from him, forcing Mr Obaseki to pitch his tent with the Peoples Democratic Party. Mr Obaseki won the subsequent election.

When asked in an interview with THISDAY what was next for the Edo governor, who has some months left in office, Mr Obaseki said, “Obaseki is very fortunate and has every reason to thank God. If you look at Nigeria today, I am one of the few persons who have had solid private sector experience and have been in government.

“I have been in the APC and I have been in PDP. My role is to sit back and see how I can assist and help, nurture, let people know, share my experiences with them and support them. So, I see myself going back to school, research, teach and just impact knowledge.”

Regarding entrenching leadership in Edo as a godfather, Mr Obaseki said, “There is no need to.”

The governor added, “You always mentor people, but when you want to sit and begin to direct them, that’s where the problem is. I don’t like being directed, so why should I direct anybody? If I wanted to direct somebody,

“I would not get one of Nigeria’s most accomplished lawyers to come and run the state, make sacrifices, and step down from all his enviable professional engagements just to come and be directed in Edo state.”

2024 UTME: How pure water seller beats all odds, scored 309, bags scholarship

by Folarin Kehinde May 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A pure water hawker Ugwu Augustus, has reportedly scored 309 and secured a full scholarship into the university after scoring 309 in the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

Alex Onyia, the founder of Educare, an organisation that prepares candidates for UTME, revealed that Augustus left school two years ago.

He added that he was, however, challenged to join the UTME preparatory class and score above 300 to get a full scholarship.

He wrote, “This youngster from my village, Ugwu Chibuzo Augustus, scored 309 in JAMB. He left school 2 years ago and has been selling pure water in the streets.

“We convinced him to join the JAMB prep program with a promise that he will get a scholarship if he scores above 300. He took up that challenge.”

Onyia recalled Augustus’s commitment to the preparation, saying he comes to classes during the day then goes back to sell pure water on the road.

He also stressed Augustus’s zeal for sharing knowledge, noting some students’ testimony of how he stays back after class to teach them.

“He comes to classes during the day and goes back to sell his pure water after the days classes.

“Interestingly, some of the students who did well in science said that Chibuzo usually stays back to explain further to them what was taught in class before he leaves for the day to sell pure water.

“The group comprised of those who were desperately determined to score above 300 and get the scholarship. They became close friends and studied together always.

“During the monthly assessments he has been consistent with good scores and right now he made it. He has now been enrolled in our full scholarship program.” Augustus wrote.

Amid disappointing statistics from this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Augustus’s achievement stands out as a testament to perseverance and excellence.

Court jails former FCMB banker 121 years for N112m Fraud in Onitsha

by Folarin Kehinde May 5, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Justice S. N. Odili of the Anambra State High Court sitting in Onitsha, Anambra State, has convicted and sentenced a former manager with First City Monument Bank, FCMB, Onitsha branch,  Nwachukwu Placidus, to a cumulative 121 years imprisonment for diverting fixed deposit funds of a customer to the tune of N112,100,000 (One Hundred and Twelve Million, One Hundred Thousand Naira only) for his personal use.

He was arraigned on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 on 16-count charges bordering on forgery, stealing, obtaining by false pretence and uttering, by the Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

One of the counts reads: “Nwachukwu Placidus between February 2009 and November 2014 in Onitsha, Anambra State within the jurisdiction of the Anambra State High Court of Nigeria with intent to defraud obtained the sum of (N112,100,000) One Hundred and Twelve Million, One Hundred Thousand Naira only, from Idemili Microfinance Bank under the false pretence that you have placed the said money in a fixed deposit account with First City Monument Bank PLC for it, which pretence you knew to be false and you thereby committed an offence”.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him, thus setting the stage for his trial.

In the course of trial, the EFCC, through its counsel, Mainforce Adaka Ekwu presented four witnesses and tendered several relevant documents which were admitted in evidence.

In his judgment, Justice Odili held that “the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt” and sentenced the convict to nine years imprisonment on count 3, 4 years on count 4 and 9 years on counts 5 to 16 respectively. He was discharged on counts 1 and 2.  The sentences shall run concurrently.

The court further ordered the convict to restitute the said sum to his victim, Idemili Microfinance Bank.

Placidus ’journey to the Correctional Centre began when a petitioner, Idemili Microfinance Bank LTD, alleged that the sum of N112,100,000 was handed over to him as the branch manager of FCMB in Onitsha, for fixed deposit. However, when the petitioner approached the bank to terminate and withdraw the deposit, the bank denied receiving the said funds.

Upon receipt of the petition, the EFCC swung into action and investigations revealed that the convict diverted the money for his own use and issued a fake fixed Deposit Certificate to the petitioner.
