BREAKING: Banex Plaza Shut As Soldiers’ Operation Enters Day 3

by Folarin Kehinde May 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Banex Plaza, an electronics and telecommunications gadget market in Abuja, is still under lock and key, Daily Trust can report.

Leading reporters learnt on Monday on Monday morning found soldiers across the plaza.

Some traders who assembled at a distance from the plaza were seen leaving after waiting for hours.

None of them agreed to speak with our correspondents but they were heard lamenting the cost implication of having the plaza shut on a major day like Monday.

Trouble started when thugs beat up some soldiers who had a minor disagreement with a trader in the plaza.

The trader had reportedly sold a bad phone to someone who invited soldiers. Rather than resolve the issue amicably, the trader reportedly invited thugs who assaulted the uniform men.

They descended on at least two soldiers and another man in mufti. The thugs who broke into groups slapped, kicked and beat up the soldiers.

Although the police stepped in to resolve the situation, soldiers later stormed the plaza, forcing traders to shut down immediately.

Some videos on social media showed soldiers chasing a crowd of people and punishing a few others.

When Daily Daily Trust correspondent visited on Monday morning, military vans were seen stationed across different spots at the plaza.

Some troops also patrolled the plaza in Wuse 2, Abuja, in their vans.

The army has been silent on the action at the plaza as Onyema Nwachukwu has not made an official comment as of the time of filing this report.

written by Folarin Kehinde

Air passengers travelling through Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA, Abuja, can now use free Wi-Fi, Vanguard has gathered.

Special Assistant to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Tunde Moshood, on Sunday, confirmed the development.

Moshood also said plans were in progress to have free Wi-Fi services installed at other airports across the country, saying access to free internet services at the country’s airports conforms with Keyamo’s third agenda.

Moshood, in a chat with Vanguard, said: “Both local and international flyers can now enjoy free Wi-Fi in Lagos and Abuja, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and Murtala Muhammed International Airport (Terminal 1 & Terminal 2). Stay connected, surf the web and make your journey smoother.

“Look for the NCC Free Airport Wi-Fi, and get connected. Your life does not have to pause while at the airport. Use the Wi-Fi to enjoy all your latest music and download your favourite Netflix programmes.

“Look for the NCC Free Airport Wi-Fi, and get connected. Your life does not have to pause while at the airport. Use the Wi-Fi to enjoy all your latest music and download your favourite Netflix programmes.

“Other airports are presently on course. This actually complies with the agenda of the Minister, which is to improve infrastructures across all airports and the aviation industry as a whole.”

Recall that Keyamo had attributed the absence of airport Wi-Fi to bureaucratic hurdles between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, and the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, which he swiftly resolved by allocating Wi-Fi provision to NAMA.

Collaborating with the Ministry of Communication, Keyamo said he was ensuring imminent access to complimentary Wi-Fi at airports, with discussions underway with international firms for in-flight Wi-Fi.

He said the initiative aligned with global aviation standards, which is to enhance passenger connectivity during flights.

As part of efforts aimed at enhancing prompt assimilation and learning prowess of students, ACE Charity Foundation has called on the federal government to introduce teachings in multiple languages apart from English in schools.

The foundation noted that this will increase access and give the students an opportunity to have access to quality education in the language they understand.

According to James, Nigeria needs a holistic approach to enhance education in Nigeria adding that vocational in addition to literacy numeracy is definitely ready for the 21st century.

“If you look at our counterparts around the world, vocation has been introduced and I think vocational training is exceptional. I believe that not every child is going to progress at the same level. Every child has a different has their own skill. Different children bring different things to the table and we should address them and give them the skills they need to survive.

“So the fact that we have one, it means we’re doing things in the right direction. I think it’s all about implementation and possibly, we need to have a collaboration with different stakeholders and amplify the benefits of language based curriculum.” She added.

Meanwhile, James also root for language, skilled and vocational based curriculum for basic and secondary education across the country.

She explained that vocational in addition to literacy and numeracy thought in the schools will helped Nigeria’s students in meeting up with the global competitiveness.

“Since we began, we have aired in 16 states in Northern Nigeria to a combined listenership of 14 million and have received over 17000 calls and messages. But our impact extends beyond numbers.

“ACE Radio is fulfilling the child’s rights to education, increasing interest in formal education, improving gender parity, reaching married girls, and subverting socio-cultural norms,” Shuaibu stated.

Illegal Mining: Chinese Nationals Jailed in Kwara

by Folarin Kehinde May 18, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Illegal mining poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s natural resources and economic well-being. The recent case of two Chinese nationals convicted in Kwara State highlights the ongoing efforts to combat this issue.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured the conviction of Duan Ya Hong and Xiao Yi for their involvement in illegal mining activities. According to a statement released by the EFCC, the duo, along with their company, Ebuy Concept Limited, were arraigned before a Federal High Court in Ilorin on April 22, 2024.

The single charge against them alleged the unauthorized purchase of 30 tons of minerals, transported in a truck with registration number JJJ 386 XT, in the Banni area of Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State. This act violated Section 1(8)(b) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, 1984.

Hong and Yi initially pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court granted them bail of N5 million each with two sureties in the same amount. Additionally, they were remanded in EFCC custody until their bail conditions were met. The case was subsequently adjourned for trial on May 14, 2024.

Taking a surprising turn during the second hearing, both defendants reversed their initial plea and admitted guilt for illegal mining. Their lawyer, I.A. Ahmed, did not object to the prosecution’s evidence, allowing the court to admit it.

Justice Anyadike, presiding over the continued hearing on Wednesday, found Hong and Yi guilty based on the unchallenged evidence presented. Considering their guilty plea, the judge sentenced them each to one year in prison. However, both were given the option of paying a fine – N2 million for Hong and N1.5 million for Yi – to avoid jail time.

The court further ordered the forfeiture of the 30 tons of seized minerals and the truck used to transport them.

This case is not an isolated incident. In July 2023, the EFCC apprehended 13 other Chinese nationals suspected of illegal mining activities in Kwara. These arrests highlight the prevalence of this issue in the state.

The EFCC emphasizes that such illegal activities violate Section 1(8)(b) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, which prohibits the unauthorized purchase of minerals. Furthermore, illegal mining deprives the federal government of royalties it is entitled to receive on mined resources.

The conviction of Hong and Yi sends a strong message to those considering engaging in illegal mining in Kwara and beyond. The EFCC’s continued vigilance and enforcement efforts aim to deter such activities and protect Nigeria’s valuable natural resources.

The case also raises questions about the potential environmental damage caused by illegal mining. Unregulated mining practices can lead to deforestation, soil erosion, and water contamination. Further investigations are needed to assess the environmental impact in this case.

Moving forward, collaboration between the EFCC, relevant state agencies, and local communities is crucial. Strengthening regulations, improving enforcement mechanisms, and educating communities about the risks of illegal mining can contribute to a more sustainable approach to managing Nigeria’s mineral resources.

12 Oil Blocks Sale: NUPRC Assures Investors Of Presidential Backing

by Folarin Kehinde May 15, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) said it has received presidential approval to remove all entry barriers to the licensing round including reducing the entry fee to the barest minimum.

The NUPRC boss said this on Tuesday at the Miami International Roadshow for the 2024 licensing round hosted by the NUPRC in collaboration with the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN) and Zetse Advisory & Consulting.

Twelve new blocks namely PPL 300-CS; PPL 301-CS; PPL 3008; PPL 3009; PPL 2001; PPL 2002; PML 51; PPL 267; PPL 268; PPL 269; PPL 270; and PPL 271 including 7 old blocks in the 2022 mini-bid are on offer by the NUPRC.

The 2024 block licensing round is scheduled to last for approximately nine months.

Nigeria has 37.5 billion barrels of crude oil and condensate reserves and 209.26 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves representing above 30 per cent and 33 per cent respectively of the entire oil and gas reserves in Africa.

Komolafe said the 2024 licensing round is different due to the decision by the government to eliminate entry barriers.

He said, “Nigeria under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR as the minister of Petroleum Resources has become a lot more proactive and pragmatic in ensuring that entry does not constitute a barrier to entry for investment in exploration blocks offered.

“As a responsible regulator, the Commission will continue to review the prevailing global investment climate to ensure that the entry fees associated with all licensing rounds are competitive in the context of global realities.

“Broadly speaking, competitive entry fees that are responsive to prevailing realities will be adopted in the 2024 Block licensing rounds. Also, considerations for the commerciality of projects will be made on a case-by case basis for the determination of appropriate entry fees.”

The NUPRC boss said that in the case of the 2024 licensing round, the commission would implement suitable models that support investments and guarantee value for stakeholders in accordance with the government’s aspirations.

He assured that the blocks on offer have extensive 2D and 3D seismic data coverage, including multi-beam and analog data.

Komolafe said, “Additionally, a 3D reprocessed Pre-stack Time Migration of remarkable quality is also available to prospective bidders.

“The availability of advanced seismic datasets and analytical tools via our dedicated portals exemplifies our commitment to excellence and technological advancement.”

The NUPRC boss also addressed securities concerns saying that the Petroleum Industry Act has provided a fund for the host communities which will help eliminate vandalism and theft.

Komolafe said, “The PIA as the overriding legislation has a provision for inclusiveness which is a recipe for sustainable security in the country. So, there is a provision in the PIA that provides the Host Community Development Fund.

“It is a provision that guarantees inclusivity and a peaceful host community environment and as we spark, the NUPRC is implementing that provision which we call the host community provision in the PIA.”

He said the guidelines for participation are structured to ensure fairness and strategic partnership, fostering not just economic returns but also technological exchange and capacity building.
