I won’t vacate office on June 16, Rivers LG Chairman dares Fubara

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Chairman, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Dr Samuel Nwanosike, has vowed not to vacate his office at the end of his tenure on June 16.

In a viral video circulated on Thursday, Nwanosike directly addressed the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, stating his intention to remain in office beyond the stipulated date.

He cited an extension of tenure by state lawmakers under the leadership of Martin Amaghule as justification, due to the state government’s failure to conduct local government elections.

In the two-minute video, Nwanosike asserted that he would continue in his role based on the lawmakers’ directive.

He warned that the people of Ikwerre LG would resist any attempt to remove him from office.

He declared, “Let them come and try to remove me if they dare. The countdown begins—23 more days to go.”

Nwanosike also challenged those questioning the authority of Martin Amaewhule, stating, “Who are you to say Martin Amaewhule is not the Rivers House of Assembly Speaker?

“If Amaewhule declares that the governor’s failure to conduct local government elections means I should remain in office, then I will stay in office. This is the law in Rivers State.”

He further warned potential challengers, “We don’t wear jeans in Ikwerre Local Government. We wear white, we tie wrappers, we wear Ogbakata. Come and disobey the law, we will wait for you. The law of Nigeria is the law passed by Martin Amaewhule. If you have the courage, show your face.”

The chairman’s statements have sparked widespread reactions as the situation unfolds.

He added, “Who are you to say Martins Amaewhule is not the Rivers House of Assembly Speaker? If Amaewhule says that because the governor of Rivers State failed in his duty to conduct local government elections.

“And that, I, Dr Nwanosike Samuel, whose tenure by the oath of office I took and the certificate of return I was issued when I contested my second tenure election should remain in office. So shall we remain in the office in Rivers State!

“We are sending a message to those who are threatening them to wear their jeans – do like this, don’t do like that. We don’t wear jeans in Ikwere local government. We wear white, we tie wrapper we wear Ogbakata. Come and disobey the law, we will wait for you. The law of Nigeria is the law passed by Martin Amaewhule. If dem born you well, show your face. Thank you.”

Protest rocks Abuja over Sanusi’s reinstatement as Kano emir

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A group of protesters besieged the Presidential Villa and the National Assembly in Abuja with placards to express their dissatisfaction over the dissolution of five Kano emirates by Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration on Thursday, May 23.

The aggrieved Nigerians urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the Kano emirates’ crisis to avert a breakdown of law and order in the state.

Some of their placards read, “Governor Abba Yusuf has desecrated the revered Northern Traditional Institution for Political vendetta and to settle old scores with perceived Political Adversaries,” “Kano is Boiling,” “Kwankwaso using his puppet (Abba) to foment Political Crisis in Kano State, President Tinubu must intervene,” “Abba focus on governance,” and “Don’t destroy Kano State.”

The protesters, under the aegis of Northern Nigeria Peace and Development Foundation, marched to the Presidential Villa and the National Assembly where they expressed concerns about what they described as an escalating situation in Kano State.

The protesters said that Governor Yusuf has taken what they described as abuse of office to another level by dissolving the traditional councils.

Coordinator of the protest, Abdullahi Muhammed Saleh, said, “A lot had been going wrong in the state but the Concerned Patriots of Nigeria had thought it best to allow Kano state to sort out its thorny issues.

He continued: “However, Thursday’s brash actions of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, who sacked five emirs to reappoint Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi as the 14th Emir of Kano has awoken us to the urgency of raising the alarm about the destructive excesses of the state governor.

“Since being sworn into office, Governor Abba Yusuf has had a string of loutish acts that run like a hardened criminal’s rap sheet.

“All in the name of rubbishing his predecessor, he started with a demolition spree that has served to impoverish the people whose lives he took an oath to improve. Thus he proved himself to be anti-people.

“The governor then attempted to destroy the structures of political parties in the state. The impish fanaticism with which he pursued this illicit mission saw him intruding into the structure of other political parties, including hiring some charlatans who purportedly suspended the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, who is interestingly his predecessor. Thus he proved himself to be anti-democratic.

“This latest stunt of sacking five emirs to install his acolyte was achieved by manipulating the Kano State House of Assembly, which he had successfully turned into a rubber stamp for endorsing his illegal acts.

“He has eroded the autonomy guaranteed by the separation of powers as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“It is inconceivable that any right-thinking person will descend low to the point of manipulating the traditional institution for political gimmicks.”

“We believe that President Tinubu’s intervention is crucial at this critical moment. We are counting on his leadership to find a lasting solution to the crisis and ensure peace returns to Kano State,” he added.

Court stops Sanusi’s reinstatement as Emir of Kano

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has granted an ex-parte order stopping Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano from reinstating Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II pending the determination of a substantive suit filed against the reinstatement.

The order also kicked against the abolishment of four emirates: Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano.

Leading Reporters earlier reported that the reinstatement was consequent upon a bill earlier passed by the State House of Assembly on Thursday.

The court, however, directed all parties involved to maintain status quo ante pending the determination of the suit filed by Sarkin Dawaki Babba and Aminu Babba-Dan’Agundi on Thursday.

Justice A.M. Liman of the Federal High Court granted leave to the Plaintiff/Applicant to issue and serve their concurrent originating motion, as well as all other court processes on the 6th Defendant (IGP) in FCT Abuja and outside the jurisdiction of the Honourable Court.

The defendants in the suit include the Kano State Government, the Kano State House of Assembly, the Speaker of the State Assembly, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, the Inspector General of Police, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Department of State Services.

Justice Liman ordered that “in view of the Constitutional and Jurisdictional Issues apparent on the face of the application, parties shall address the Court on same at the hearing of the Fundamental Rights application which is fixed for the 3rd of June, 2024.

That in order to maintain the peace and security of the state, an Interim Injunction of this Honourable Court is granted restraining the Respondents from enforcing, executing, implementing and operationalizing the Kano State Emirate Law Council (Repeal) Law.

“That parties are hereby ordered to maintain status quo ante the passage and assent of the bill pending the hearing of the Fundamental Rights application.”

FG suspends Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road Project Realignment

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The federal government has shelved and diverted realignment of Lagos-calabar coastal road projects while also saving the telecommunications infrastructure and submarine cables, among others at the axis.

With the presidential directive, Telcos, MTN submarine cables, and workstations along the Okun-Ajah community axis have been saved from demolition after a thorough assessment of the EIA impact on infrastructure and business activities along the Okun-Ajah community axis.

The minister of Works, David Umahi, while addressing stakeholders meeting in Lagos on Compensation and Environmental Impact Assessment on the coastal road project informed community groups and traditional institutions in the state, particularly the Okun-Ajah community in Lagos.

Earlier, the Okun-Ajah community cried out and warned the federal and Lagos State governments over the alleged illegal variation to the Lagos-calabar coastal highway route which put six villages at the risk of demolition and also the displacement of three traditional kings within the Community if the plan was not shelved.

Umahi buttressed the need to redesign the route to save the 600 years ancestry of Okun-Ajah community, adding that, the president, out of compassion to realise the project, added human phase to save property and infrastructure of Okun-Ajah axis while applauding efforts of the president to divert alignment routes to save the communities from the ongoing demolition exercise stretching along the indigenous communities in the state.

The minister said, following the gazetted alignment, and order of the EIA assessment, over 750 houses were expected to be demolished in the old alignment while 450 houses were marked for demolition in the new alignment after thorough assessment of the project along the Okun-Ajah community axis.

Umahi also explained that the project approval followed the process and went through the Bureau of Public Procurement (BBP) after consideration by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) as prescribed by law.

Umahi said the project followed certification process and Environmental Impact Assessment Acts and lent credence to it and followed the processes involved.

Umahi noted that BPP issued a certificate of no objection on the project to the Ministry of Works in line with the Procurement Act but added that the Ministry of Works took the certificate of no objection to FEC and FEC debated and approved it.

BREAKING: Tinubu removes Wike’s ally as river basin boss

by Folarin Kehinde May 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has sacked Chukwuemeka Woke as the managing director (MD) of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA).

Woke, who served as former Chief of Staff to FCT minister Nyesom Wike when he was Rivers governor, was appointed on May 9, 2024.

His appointment, however, generated mixed reactions and protests as some groups and individuals said it was against the principle of regional representation.

In a statement on Wednesday, May 22, Ajuri Ngelale, presidential spokesman, announced that Woke had been replaced with Dr. Adedeji Ashiru.

Ngelale noted that Tinubu had moved Woke to the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) as the director-general/chief executive officer.

The statement read: “Engr. Woke, besides being an engineer, is an environmental specialist and politician. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering, and had served under the Environmental, Safety, and Operations Departments of the then Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

“He was Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State and Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, for many years.

“Dr. Ashiru holds a Doctorate degree in Engineering from the Common Wealth University, UK, and has led a consortium of blue-chip companies, in addition to earning many stripes in his professional endeavour.

“The President expects the new Chief Executive Officers to deploy their competencies to these critical agencies for sustainable gains and turnaround, while maintaining utmost transparency in their operations.”

BREAKING: Court grants Kyari bail after 27 months in detention

by Folarin Kehinde May 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted former commander of Force Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari two weeks bail after 27 months in detention.

Kyari is expected to go home and conclude his mother’s burial rites.

The court subsequently set Friday, May 31 for determination of his bail application in trial over drug-related charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following his arrest over two years ago on February 14, 2022.

Recall that in 2022, the Police Service Commission (PSC) suspended Kyari and two senior police officers — Sunday Ubua and James Bawa — named in the cocaine deal involving suspended deputy commissioner of police.

“The Police Service Commission has suspended assistant commissioner of police, ACP Sunday Ubua and assistant superintendent of police, ASP James Bawa from the exercise of the powers and functions of their respective Offices with effect from Monday, 14th February, 2022,” the PSC said in a statement.

The NDLEA had also declared Kyari wanted over alleged links with an international drug cartel.

Femi Babalola, spokesperson of the NDLEA, alleged that Kyari and his Intelligence Response Team (IRT) arrested some drug traffickers who arrived in the country from Ethiopia with 25kg of cocaine but took 15kg of the seized substance for themselves.

The police arrested Kyari, Ubua, Bawa, and John Nuhu for “tampering with narcotic exhibits and unprofessional infractions” and handed them to the anti-drug agency.

The spokesperson of the PSC said the commission asked Usman Baba, inspector-general of police, to suspend two police inspectors — Simon Agrigba and John Nuhu.

FG Bans ‘Money Rituals’, Other Vices In Nollywood Films

by Folarin Kehinde May 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Dr Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director/CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), says the Federal Government has approved the prohibition of money rituals and glamorising of vices in Nigerian films.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Husseini disclosed this at a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood held in Enugu on Wednesday.

The event was organised by the NFVCB and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA).

Movie producers, directors and actors drawn from different parts of the country, as well as leaders of various guilds and associations in the Nigerian film industry were present at the event.

Husseini said that Nigeria was facing an industry emergency requiring bold and ambitious actions from all parents, guardians and stakeholders.

“When my predecessor approached the former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, on the need to make subsidiary legislation to curtail the display of smoking in Nigerian movies, he saw the need to include money rituals.

“Others included in the regulation are ritual killings and glamorising other crimes in order to further sanitise the film industry.

“Today, I am delighted to announce to you that the Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, pursuant to section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004 has approved the regulation.

“The minister has approved the ‘Prohibition of Money Ritual, Ritual Killing, Tobacco, Tobacco Products, Nicotine Product Promotion and Glamorisation display in Movies, Musical Videos and Skits Regulations 2024’.

“We have also forwarded the approved copy to the Federal Ministry of Justice for Gazette,” he said.

Husseini said the sensitisation programme was to educate stakeholders on the danger inherent in smoking in Nigerian movies.

According to him, besides the health implications, glamorising smoking in films poses a negative influence on teens and young adults who constitute the largest segment of Nigerian movie viewers.

He said that the board was set to undertake detailed enlightenment programmes in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, local communities, faith groups and other institutions.

“As you all know, the film industry occupies a central position in the entertainment and creative sector, and it is imperative that we continue to place the highest premium on the progress of the film industry.

“The NFVCB supports smoke-free movies and smoke-free Nollywood, and we, therefore, seek your collaboration to develop creative content that discourages smoking and promotes positive health messages.

“After a series of engagements, the NFVCB in collaboration with the CAPPA decided to do a ‘subsidiary regulations’ to cater for smoking in movies since this aspect was not expressly spelt out in the extant Law.

“The NFVCB is well prepared to take leadership in this regard and has planned and begun implementing innovative ways to achieve its mandate,” he said.

NAN reports that it is the duty of the Board to register all film and video outlets across the country and to keep a register of such registered outlets among other functions.

FG cancels Tinubu’s One Year Anniversary Celebration

by Folarin Kehinde May 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris has disclosed that there will be no fanfare to mark President Bola Tinubu’s one year in office.

He said there would be low-key activities to mark the anniversary.

The Minister said this on Wednesday during a World Press conference to commence “Ministerial Sectoral Updates” as part of the activities to mark President Tinubu’s one year in office.

Idris, however, emphasised that there would be no form of celebration owing to the mood of the nation.

“There won’t be any form of celebrations; there will be sectoral briefings,” he stated.

The Minister, who restated that the media remained critical stakeholders in the Nigeria project, urged the practitioners to “report responsibly and with a deep sense of patriotism to the nation.”

He stressed that press freedom comes along with responsibilities.

He added that President Tinubu, as a product of democracy, was interested in press freedom.

The Information Minister said it was in that spirit that the government was determined to keep the people informed of its policies and achievements.

While responding to a question, he, however, pleaded with the media to collaborate with the government in fighting fake news, which he said was more deadly to the nation than cancer.
