BREAKING: Fubara sacks 10,000 civil servants employed by Wike

by Folarin Kehinde May 31, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has cancelled the 10,000 jobs in the Rivers state civil service approved by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, shortly before the end of his tenure.

Before leaving office, Wike approved the immediate employment of a significant number of youths to fill existing vacancies in the state’s workforce with immediate effect.

But during an interactive session with stakeholders in Port Harcourt on Friday, Fubara announced a cancel of the recruitment.

The governor noted that the process was flawed and compromised by those entrusted to handle it.

He stated that a more transparent process would commence soon, expressing sadness that when the names of those selected from the 23 local government areas were scrutinized, they were people smuggled in for political patronage.

“I know that is the first question, the ten thousand jobs. When we came on board we already had details that were submitted to us from the 23 local government areas,” Fubara said.

“You will agree with me that when we subjected those names to proper scrutiny, most of those names, in fact, 60 per cent of those names were over-aged. They were names that people brought for political patronage.

“But what we are talking about today is employment for the future. I, personally after the analysis of those things, said ‘How will you employ somebody who is 52 years old as a civil servant?’

“How many years is the person going to work before retirement?”

Meanwhile, Fubara has said the social contract between his administration and the Rivers people will remain an unbroken bond to drive governance on a healthy footing.

The governor, therefore, challenged service providers for the Rivers State Waste Management Agency to redouble their efforts and make sure that refuse wastes are cleared off the streets promptly to have a cleaner city always.

Fubara, who was represented by the Head of Rivers State Civil Service, Dr George Nwaeke, gave the charge when he received a delegation of leaders and members of the RIWAMA Service Providers Association, on a Solidarity Walk to Government House Gate in Port Harcourt on Friday.

‘Leave or die’ — Terrorists gives quit notice to Borno communities

by Folarin Kehinde May 31, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Islamic State – West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have given residents of Kukawa LGA notice to quit their communities or face death from the terror group.

This is coming barely four days after killing fifteen fishermen in the Tumbun Rogo community.

A resident who fled his community to Maiduguri three hours after receiving the threat, revealed this to Channels Television.

While relieving his experience, the resident who begged anonymity, explained that the terrorists had gathered residents of various communities in the LGA in the early hours of Thursday, and told them to vacate their homes before Saturday, or else they would be killed.

According to him, immediately after they received the threat from the terrorists, communities started vacating their communities, some to Kross Kauwa while others left for Monguno.

Kukawa LGA is a local government at Lake Chad that is popular for fishing, farming and other agricultural value chain activities. it is surrounded by Lake Chad and has the presence of troops of the Nigerian Army and the Navy.

Although displaced by the insurgents during the insurgency, some communities like Kross Kauwa, Baga, Doron-Baga, Kukawa community, Tumbun Rogo were resettled back by the Professor Babagana Zulum administration.

Despite the restoration of relative peace and stability to the area, Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists have continued to attack the communities, due to the socioeconomic value of the area to the terrorists, who exploit the fishing and farming activities of the place for their survival and financial support.

by Folarin Kehinde May 31, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has announced the cancellation of the contentious $300 landing levy imposed on helicopter operators within Nigeria.

The levy, which had been outsourced to Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Limited for collection, faced significant backlash from helicopter operators who deemed it unnecessary.

The suspension of the levy was announced on behalf of the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, in a statement signed by the Ministry’s Spokesman, Mr Oluseyi Odutayo.

The decision to halt the levy follows a meeting with the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) executives and is pending further review by a newly formed committee.

“Following a meeting with the AON executive on the issue of helicopter landing levies collection at aerodromes, helipads, airstrips, and others, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has temporarily suspended the enforcement granted to Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Ltd.,” the statement said.

“The suspension is with effect from 30th May, 2024,” it added.

The ministry indicated that the suspension was prompted by calls from industry stakeholders for a review.

Consequently, a committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, its relevant agencies, AON, International Oil Companies (IOCs), and Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Ltd., has been tasked to examine the concerns and submit a report by the end of June 2024.

‘I’ll Sack Non-Performing Ministers’ – Tinubu

by Folarin Kehinde May 31, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has hinted on plans to relieve underperforming ministers of their duties in the coming weeks.

President Tinubu had asked the ministers to present their scorecard to Nigerians as part of activities to mark his first year in office.

Many Nigerians had said that the president would use that as a yardstick to either retain or relieve these ministers of their positions.

Confirming this position, President Tinubu declared at a meeting with leaders of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) at the villa on Thursday evening that appointees who have performed subpar would be shown the door.

“I thank the cabinet members for their efforts, but I will relieve any of them of their duties anytime I feel that they are failing Nigerians,” Tinubu said.

The president appealed to state governments to prioritize the needs of local communities by ensuring accountability and effectiveness in the administration of local governments.

“I will appeal to you to summon the governors. I am doing my very best to enhance the revenue base of the country. They must equally be sympathetic, and they must urgently consider the needs of the local people.

“People reside in the local communities. That is where they work, farm, and live. If the local governments are not effective in delivering services; as leaders, we must not hang on to the numbers.

“Maybe we should look at recalibrating. What was good four years ago may not be good today. When we want the votes, we go to the locals; when we get the votes, we move to and focus on Abuja,” he said.

Speaking on the significance of education in nation-building, Tinubu described the situation of out-of-school children in parts of Nigeria as unacceptable.

“The question of out-of-school children is unacceptable. Education is a tool against poverty, and that is what brought many of us here. We must use our education to serve the people and improve their conditions. We must develop the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, which is the education system. We will collaborate with you on this intensively.

“We are still building Nigeria, and I am glad that you have emphasized the need for development. The infrastructure decay is unacceptable, and the level of poverty in the north is unacceptable. We must eliminate the source of these trends,” Tinubu said.

On security, President Tinubu said: “Everybody wants to be secure, and we need to invest more in technology. We will do it, I promise you. We will put our heart and soul into ensuring that Nigeria is secure and its citizens are protected.”

He continued: ”As long as we are together, and we have to be together, there is strength in our diversity. Our strength and opportunity are built into our population. I thank the cabinet members for their efforts, but I will relieve any of them of their duties anytime I feel that they are failing Nigerians.”

Leader of the delegation and Chairman, Board of Trustees of ACF, Barrister Bashir Dalhatu, congratulated President Tinubu on his first year in office and expressed the Forum’s appreciation for his achievements and service to the country.

FG arrests 3 illegal miners shutdown, mining site in Abuja

by Folarin Kehinde May 30, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The federal government’s crackdown on illegal mining led to the apprehension of three suspects and the shutdown of their illegal mining site in Gaube, Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The arrest was carried out by the newly inaugurated Mining Marshals, led by Assistant Commandant John Onoja Attah, under the operation code-named “OPERATION HAYAKIN KOGO.”

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects did not have the necessary documentation authorizing their mining activities on the site.

It was also found that a legitimate mining company with the proper permits for the same location was unable to access the site due to the activities and resistance of the illegal miners.

“This is a clear case of illegal miners displacing lawful miners and investors, which will not be tolerated,” according to the Commander of the Mining Marshals.

The suspects, who voluntarily confessed to the offence of illegal mining, admitted to having been operating on the site for over a year.

As at the time of their arrest, over 2,000 tons of lithium was on the ground, highlighting the scale of the illegal operation.

According to Attah, “Whereas, we met about 2000 tons of lithium on the ground, the quantity of lithium mined since commencement of operation can’t be quantified as they were not being recorded due to the illegality of their mining operations.”

The seized minerals and equipment on site have been marked as exhibits for prosecution, and further investigations are ongoing to uncover the extent of the illegal activities.

The Marshals Commander further said that the crackdown on illegal mining was part of a broader effort to combat revenue loss in the country’s mining sector and attributed the success of the operation to the collaborative efforts of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake and the Commandant General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi.

He added that the operation is aimed at cleansing the mining sector of illegal activities and promoting a more secure and prosperous industry.

“This operation sends a strong message to illegal miners and investors that the federal government will no longer tolerate illegal activities that undermine the growth and development of the mining sector,” Attah maintained.

‘Bandits killed my elder brother who had 3 wives, 27 children’ Katsina State Governor, Radda reveals

by Folarin Kehinde May 30, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State said his saddest moment was any time he received news of bandits’ attacks in the state.

Radda, who stated this on Wednesday in Katsina at a press briefing for his one year in office, also revealed that his elder brother was killed by bandits.

“My saddest moment is when I receive calls that people were killed, houses burnt and women raped by bandits in a particular village. The only way to appreciate that is to put yourself in their shoes, and you will feel it. I have developed that feeling and it remained with me because my senior brother was killed by bandits. He left behind three wives and 27 children,” he said.

The governor noted that when his administration came on board, 22 out of the 34 local governments were severely affected by insecurity.

According to him, after the state government inaugurated the community security watch corps, the problem was drastically reduced.

He said that due to the intense pressure being mounted on the criminals, they have now resorted to attacking residents of hard-to-reach areas at night, making it difficult for the security operatives to respond easily.

The governor advocated the creation of state police in the country, saying: “Before I became governor, I was a critic of the state police. It is now that I see the importance of that.”

Radda further said that bad eggs in society are affecting the ongoing efforts in the fight against insecurity in the state.

“There was a village head who was arrested for collecting N700,000 to allow bandits to attack the village and kill over 30 people,” he said.

NCC: A Digital Enabler of the Renewed Hope Agenda

by Folarin Kehinde May 30, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

In Nigeria, a young tech-savvy and upwardly mobile population is teeming, and exploring derivable benefits of digital technologies. They are propelled by rapidly expanding internet access and steady broadband penetration, currently about 43 per cent. Our digital economy is poised for significant growth, positively impacting various sectors and benefiting the nation through enhanced connectivity and digital skills.

Digital transformation is happening globally at a record pace. During the Covid-19 pandemic, for example, remote work and virtual collaboration tools took centre stage; platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet became—and still are—essential for meetings, conferences and team collaboration. E-commerce and online retail have transformed how consumers seamlessly order and receive goods and services.

Even traditionally brick-and-mortar businesses are changing the ways they engage with their customers through introduction of digital solutions to improve the customer experience. It is a no-brainer that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are revolutionising our lives for the better, whether in education, healthcare delivery, living, public services, energy management, and much more.

Suffice to say, that underpinning this global digital transformation is the indispensable role of telecommunications infrastructure. Universal, affordable, reliable and fast telecom services are becoming social rights, as mobile networks and data-centres form the backbone for digital transformation by enabling the storage and processing of large amounts of data as well as the integration of digital technologies into numerous use cases.

For President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Renewed Hope Agenda draws us all to a more promising outlook. Inherent in his agenda is the pledge to embolden and support the youth and women by harnessing emerging sectors such as the digital economy. In delivering this vision, the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani unveiled a blueprint appropriately titled – “Accelerating our Collective Prosperity through Technical Efficiency” with the goal of supporting Nigeria’s economic growth by enhancing productivity, facilitated by digital innovation.

Acknowledging the criticality of resilient telecommunications infrastructure to a robust digital economy, Dr. Tijani’s Strategic Agenda 2023 — 2027 sets targets to achieve a 50 per cent improvement in Quality of Service (QoS) by the end of 2024; to boost Nigeria’s broadband penetration rate to 70 per cent by the end of 2025; to deliver data download speed of 25Mbps in urban areas and 10Mbps in rural areas by the end of 2025; to provide coverage for, at least, 80 per cent of the country’s population, especially the underserved and unserved populations by the end of 2026; to reduce the gap of unconnected Nigerians in rural areas from 61 per cent to less than 20 per cent by 2027; and to secure between 300 per cent to 500 per cent increase in broadband investment by the end of 2027.

Drawing from the Strategic Agenda of the Ministry, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC) has emplaced three Strategic Focus Areas for the Commission: The Consumers, the Industry and Licensees; and the Government.

Dr. Maida’s approach to delivering on President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda comes from the recognition that each of these stakeholders has a unique perspective and different, occasionally-paradoxical expectations of the Commission. His goal is to forge a path that carefully balances each stakeholder’s needs while meeting their expectations.

Consider the Consumers—who are central to Dr. Maida’s focus—for example. His approach focuses on ensuring that they receive an enhanced Quality of Experience, beyond the narrow and very technically-evaluated Quality of Service. Quality of experience takes into account all touch points along the consumers journey in using telecom services from selection, through on boarding, usage, support and even off-boarding.

This means that, consumers are empowered to make the right network selection, enjoy a seamless onboarding into the network of their choice, enjoy quality service at fair costs, receive responsive customer service and enjoy protected off-boarding where they chose to leave the network.

To address consumer complaints on data depletion, the Commission has directed Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to conduct an independent audit of their billing systems and is concluding a consultation process to simplify tariff plans. These initiatives would provide enhanced transparency to the consumer.

The Commission, under Dr. Maida, rather than taking a national outlook on data collection for Quality-of-Service delivery, has adopted an approach where more granular data is collected from operators and analysed to determine quality of service at very small, local levels, to allow the deployment of optimised solutions or regulatory actions where needed.

On the side of the Industry and Licensees of the Commission, Dr. Maida’s focus is aimed at forging a resilient industry and enhancing the delivery of regulatory services. Since he came on board, the Commission has shown commitment to tackling industry debt issues more seriously. It has also embarked on critical advocacy initiatives to address long-term challenges in the sector, including advocacy for designating telecom infrastructure as Critical National Infrastructure, as well as successfully persuading over six states to waive Right of Way (RoW) fees, even as he initiates discussions with more states.

The Commission, under Dr. Maida’s leadership, is equally engaging with the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms towards addressing multiple taxation issues in the telecoms sector.

In order to ensure that the industry is in line with current realities, the Commission is also undertaking a review of its extant Regulatory Instruments and Licensing Frameworks. For instance, Quality of Service Regulations have been reviewed to incorporate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for 5G and other participants that are critical to the Quality of Service.

By achieving expected QoS KPIs, high-speed internet connectivity, and forging a resilient and innovative telecommunications industry, the Commission is actively supporting the Ministry’s vision of boosting economic growth and productivity through technological innovation, delivering on the promise of Renewed Hope for all Nigerians.

NOA directs LG community officers to learn new national anthem in 72 hours

by Folarin Kehinde May 30, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a directive to all its Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officers in the 774 local governments to commit the newly signed National Anthem to memory before Monday, June 3, 2024.

Director-General of the NOA Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement issued to newsmen in Abuja, said the directive was part of the Agency’s efforts to ensure a seamless transition to the new National Anthem which is part of the national identity project being pursued to promote national cohesion, unity and a sense of patriotism.

Issa-Onilu noted that the Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officers (COMOS) are the Agency’s lead officers in the local governments whose roles are primarily to enlighten citizens at the grassroots level of government policies, programmes and activities.

He reiterated that the NOA is also working closely with the National Union of Teachers (NUT) to ensure that schools across the country are mobilised to start using the current National Anthem.

“We are excited to embark on this new chapter in our national history. We believe that this new National Anthem will inspire a sense of pride and unity among Nigerians, and we are committed to ensuring that every citizen has access to it,” he said.

He furthermore recalled that President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday assented to the bill that reverted Nigerians to the use of ‘Nigeria we hail thee,’ its former national anthem.

The NOA DG in the circular urged all Community Officers to take this directive seriously and to make every effort to learn the new National Anthem by the specified deadline “as you would be the grassroots marshals for the implementation of this new policy of government.”

He added that NOA as the custodian of the nation’s symbols has the mandate to promote and preserve the integrity of all national icons including the national anthem.
