by Folarin Kehinde June 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Some members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) enforcing the strike declared by the union are currently receiving treatment at the Plateau State Specialist Hospital.

Leading reporters reports that the organised Labour had declared indefinite strike over the Federal Government to meets its N494,000 Minimum Wage demand.

While enforcing the strike in Jos, Plateau state capital, on Monday, touts at a private transport company reportedly attacked some NLC members

Trouble started after the louts at the company which operates at a motor park located at Yakubu Gowon Way, opposite NTA Jos, threw stones at the enforcement team.

According to the Vice Chairman of NLC in Plateau, Comrade Sunday Ayodele, “Immediately the touts at the park saw us arriving the gate, they started hauling stone at us, thinking we are members of the NURTW.

“Unknown to us, there is a pending dispute between the private transport company and NURTW Jos. And the touts in the park simply descended on our members. Before we could understand the reason for the attack, the touts had injured 4 members of NLC.

“It took the intervention of the security agencies for calm to be restored at the park. We had to withdraw our enforcement team from the park to allow peace to reign.”

Strike: Labour cuts water supply to Senate, House Of Reps

by Folarin Kehinde June 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have shut down the National Assembly in compliance with the indefinite strike declared by the organised labour.

Our correspondent who went to the National Assembly to monitor the situation met the entrance and exit gates blocked with two coastal buses by PASAN.

The organised labour had insisted that its indefinite strike would begin today as planned following the federal government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage above N60,000.

Labour, which is demanding N494,000, said this in Abuja last night after a three-hour meeting with the National Assembly leadership and top officials of the Executive arm of government.

Recall that following failure to reach a compromise on a new minimum wage by the tripartite committee set up by the federal government, the organised labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) commenced a nationwide strike today.

Daily Trust reports that electricity and water supply to the two buildings housing the Senate and the House of Representatives as well as other facilities in the National Assembly complex have been shut down by the union.

BREAKING: CBN revokes Heritage Bank license

by Folarin Kehinde June 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the license of Heritage Bank Plc with immediate effect.

This decision, it said, was to maintain a stable and healthy financial system as authorised under Section 12 of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020.

A statement from the CBN by Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali Acting Director, Corporate Communications said the revocation was executed after Heritage Bank breached Section 12 (1) of BOFIA 2020.

“The bank’s Board and Management failed to improve its financial performance, posing a risk to the financial stability of the country. Despite various supervisory measures taken by the CBN to help the bank recover, Heritage Bank continued to struggle without any reasonable prospects of recovery,” the apex bank stated.

To ensure public confidence and integrity of the financial system, the CBN appointed the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) as the Liquidator of Heritage Bank as stipulated in Section 12 (2) of BOFIA 2020.

The CBN reassured the public that Nigeria’s financial system remains robust and secure.

Industry Stakeholders Praise ITF DG, Oluwatoyin for empowering millions

by Folarin Kehinde June 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

……disown concerned workers

Industry stakeholders on Monday described the administration of Dr Afiz Ogun Oluwatoyin as a transparent one.

“The Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Dr Afiz Ogun Oluwatoyin, is very sincere and is increasing awareness about training initiatives within the economy and impacting the lives and livelihoods of millions of businesses in Nigeria.”

The investors, community, government and trade union officials also praised Oluwatoyin’s unrelenting efforts in changing the face of the organization in all fronts, harnessing the potential of the youth, driving economic growth, beefing up revenue generation for the agency and empowering artisans in Nigeria with the knowledge, tools and resources needed to succeed in their respective fields.

The stakeholders in a statement issued in Abuja by the Secretary General of Manufacturing, Construction, Automobile and Textile Stakeholders Forum (MCATSF) , Alhaji Ibrahim Musa, commended Oluwatoyin for his purposeful leadership, pragmatic re-engineering of the organization and impact on the lives of Nigerians.

The statement excoriated a fictitious group, Concerned Workers, over statement credited to it.

“The attempt by the fictitious group to cast aspersions on the integrity of Oluwatoyin by making unsubstantiated allegations about him and the organization is unfortunate.”

The stakeholders upbraided the group for misleading the public about the organization.

The report is defamatory, insulting and entirely fictitious. This is just an attempt to deceive and mislead the public. All the allegations centred around the pull down syndrome on the part of some people who are insisting on the old order of corruption, anarchy and insanity.

They urged mischievous elements in the organization to forsake the club of evil doers and the society of organized dishonesty.

“This is a man with tremendous energy. Dr Oluwatoyin is a straightforward and hardworking Nigerian. He is also a strict disciplinarian, quietly efficient and has reputation for accountability.”

The statement emphasized high degree of honesty, morale and productivity, passion for efficiency, conducive atmosphere, adherence to procedure, consultation, delegation of authority and concerns about competence.

‘’Some people have told a lot of lies about the organization.’’

Particularly, the stakeholders praised the world-acclaimed man of principles and integrity for his impressive performance, visionary attributes, expertise and profound understanding of the goals of the organization.

They listed operational changes in the organization, technical and entrepreneurial development as well as advisory services on micro, small and medium enterprises as key achievements of Oluwatoyin.

They also listed intellectualism and finance management process as attributes of the director general.

FG threaten to jail workers who joined NLC strike for six months

by Folarin Kehinde June 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has warned workers planning to embark the indefinite strike declared by labour unions that they risk six months jail term.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), gave the warning in a statement on Sunday.

Fagbemi said Section 18 of the Trade Disputes Act requires a worker employed in any essential services to give their employer 15 days notice before ceasing their services and any who did not comply would be liable on conviction to a fine or imprisonment for six months.

He said the fundamental importance of the 15-day notice is underscored by the fact that Sections 41 and 42(1)(b) of the Act criminalize non-compliance with the provision.

He noted that the federal government had been engaging stakeholders in the tripartite committee to determine a new national minimum wage and had not declared an end to negotiation.

The AGF further noted that the proposed strike is a breach of an order of the National Industrial Court and ongoing mediators’ settlement efforts over issues connected with the subject matter of the order.

“You are further invited to recall the pendency of the interim injunctive order granted on 5th June 2023 in suit no: NICN/ABJ/158/2023 — FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA & ANOR VV. NIGERIAN LABOUR CONGRESS & ANOR, which order restrained both Nigeria Labour Congress und Trade Union Congress from embarking on any industrial action or strike of any nature,” he said.

“While the government assures that it would continue to adopt a conciliatory approach to resolving matters pertaining to workers and citizens welfare in the spirit of collective bargaining, I would like to urge you to kindly reconsider the declaration of strike action and return to the ongoing negotiation meetings, which has been adjourned to a date to be communicated to parties.

“This would be a more civil and patriotic approach and will enable your Congress pursue its cause within the ambit of the law and avoid foisting avoidable hardships on the generality of Nigerians. which this proposed industrial action is bound to cause.”

BREAKING: Blackout as electricity workers shut down national grid

by Folarin Kehinde June 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

In compliance with the joint directive of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to down tools on Monday over the new minimum wage, electricity workers have shut down the National Grid, resulting in nationwide blackout.

This was disclosed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, on Monday morning.

TCN said workers were driven away from their duty posts while others were beaten and wounded at some power facilities. It added that all its efforts at grid recovery were being frustrated by the unionists.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria hereby informs the general public that the Labour Union has shut down the national grid, resulting in black out nationwide. The national grid shut down occured at about 2.19am this morning, 3rd June 2024.

“At about 1:15am this morning, the Benin Transmission Operator under the Independent System Operations unit of TCN reported that all operators were driven away from the control room and that staff that resisted were beaten while some were wounded in the course of forcing them out of the control room and without any form of control or supervision, the Benin Area Control Center was brought to zero.

“Other transmission substations that were shut down, by the Labour Union include the Ganmo, Benin, Ayede, Olorunsogo, Akangba and Osogbo Transmission Substations. Some transmission lines were equally opened due to the ongoing activities of the labour union.

“On the power generating side, power generating units from different generating stations were forced to shut down some units of their generating plants, the Jebba Generating Station was forced to shut down one of its generating units while three others in the same substation subsequently shut down on very high frequency. The sudden forced load cuts led to high frequency and system instability, which eventually shut down the national grid at 2:19am.

“At about 3.23am, however, TCN commenced grid recovery, using the Shiroro Substation to attempt to feed the transmission lines supplying bulk electricity to the Katampe Transmission Substation. The situation is such that the labour Union is still obstructing grid recovery nationwide.

“We will continue to make effort to recover and stabilize the grid to enable the restoration of normal bulk transmission of electricity to distribution load centres nationwide,” TCN stated.
