written by Folarin Kehinde

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Monday in an ongoing clash against Benin Republic in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, recited the ‘Arise O Compatriot’ anthem as opposed to the newly signed ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’.

As observed by a PUNCH reporter, the players sang the now ‘old anthem’ at the beginning of the match.

President Bola Tinubu on May 29, signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law.

The bill reinstated the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

This was disclosed by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during the joint plenary that Tinubu attended.

The final assent to the passage of the bill will bring about a shift from the now-recognised, “Arise O Compatriots.” The bill was rapidly cleared by both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, Head coach Finidi George, ahead of the match named Terem Moffi and Ademola Lookman to spearhead the attack, while Victor Boniface has been placed on the bench.

The Super Eagles take to the field with the following lineup:

The match is currently ongoing at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.

BREAKING: NLC President Ajaero breaks silence on minimum wage Dispute, says strike not an option

by Folarin Kehinde June 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that it will not embark on a strike action tomorrow, Tuesday, to demand a new national minimum wage.

This decision was made known by the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, at the ongoing International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

Ajaero said: “We cannot declare strike now because the figures are with the President.”

He added that the tripartite committee’s proposals are awaiting the President’s decision, and the NLC’s National Executive Council will deliberate on the new figure once it is announced.

“During the tenure of the immediate past President, the figure that was proposed to him was N27,000 by the tripartite committee but he increased it to N30,000. We are hopeful that this President will do the right thing. The President had noted that the difference between N62,000 and N250,000 is a wide gulf,” he said.

Ajaero berated governors who declared that they wouldn’t be able to pay a minimum wage of N62,000.

He said, “How can any governor say he cannot pay? They cannot also be calling for the decentralization of the minimum wage.

“Are there wages decentralized? Governors whose states are not contributing a dime to the national purse and who generate pitiable Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) are collecting the same amount as governors whose states are generating billions of dollars into the FAAC.

Subsequently, reports suggest that a crash landing may have occurred upon the chopper’s return journey to Lilongwe.

Eyewitnesses reportedly observed a crash in the Chikangawa forest area, raising fears that Vice President Chilima may have been aboard.

As of now, official statements from the government are awaited. President Lazarus Chakwera has reportedly cancelled his trip to the Bahamas.

CBN makes fresh clarification on license revocation of four major banks

by Folarin Kehinde June 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied plans to revoke the operating licenses of four major banks in the country – Fidelity, Polaris, Wema, and Unity Banks.

In a statement released on Monday, June 10, the CBN’s acting director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi Ali, reassured the public of the safety of their deposits and the resilience of the banking system.

According to her, key financial soundness indicators remain within current regulatory thresholds.

Mrs. Sidi Ali addressed the misinterpretation of a January 10, 2024 circular announcing the dissolution of the Boards of Union, Keystone, and Polaris Banks, which is being misrepresented as a new directive. She clarified that this is an old notification and not a recent development.

The CBN spokesperson also dispelled rumours of further license revocations before the completion of the bank recapitalization exercise, labelling them unfounded and aimed at causing unnecessary panic.

“Without prejudice to the ongoing recapitalisation process, I want to restate that the Nigerian banking industry remains resilient,” Mrs. Sidi Ali said.

She urged customers, especially those of Heritage Bank, not to worry about the safety of their deposits, as the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has already begun payments to the bank’s insured depositors.

Mrs. Sidi Ali further encouraged the public to continue their regular banking activities without worry.
