Military reacts as terrorists from Sahel region cross into Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde June 21, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A new report released on Wednesday by a Dutch think tank, the Clingendael Institute, indicated that there was ample evidence that Islamist terrorists from the Sahel region had crossed into Nigeria through the Benin Republic border.

The jihad fighters were said to have settled in Kebbi State and the Kainji National Park, turning the facility into their base.

Reacting to the report, the director, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, said the military was not slowing down in its campaign against terrorism and violent extremism.

Buba noted that the goal of the military operations across the country was to destroy the terrorists wherever they were.

“The military is fighting the terrorists wherever they exist across the country. Indeed, troops of Operation Whirl Punch are conducting operations in terrorist enclaves in North Central which includes Kainji Lake Park,” he said

“Additionally, troops of Operation Hadarin Daji are equally doing the same to terrorists in Kebbi State and the west of the country. The objective of our operations is to destroy these terrorists and dismantle their military capabilities so citizens are safe and protected.”

The report said the extremists’ motive for settling in Kainji Lake National Park and Kebbi state was unclear.

They were believed to be affiliated with the various jihadist groups with links to Boko Haram.

The report said, “Violent extremists are present in Kainji Lake National Park just across the border from the Borgou Department.

“Evidence suggests this involves Sahelian extremists (likely Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin). Another group would be Darul Salam – a group linked to Boko Haram, if not fully affiliated – with an open attitude towards bandits.

“There has been a strong increase in the movement of unidentified armed actors along the Borgou border with Niger State and in banditry-related incidents since March 2023.

“The evidence suggests that there is a direct link with those operating in Kainji Lake National Park.’’

It added, “Since March 2023, unidentified armed groups have had a concealed presence in the Forêt de Trois Rivières between southern Alibori and the Borgou Department.’’

The Clingendael Institute said banditry was re-emerging in zones controlled by the JNIM in Benin, noting that the bandits appeared to have Nigerian connections.

The report also warned that the jihadists might threaten the well-developed cross-border trade system between the Nigerian and Beninese border.

“This system generates livelihoods for many people in the area. Livelihoods are at risk. There is a variety of markets and crossings connecting North West Nigeria and Northern Benin. Unidentified armed groups and Darul Salam operate in these hubs,” the report added.

Fake News: Victor Osimhen not banned from national team – NFF

by Folarin Kehinde June 19, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has described as outright falsehood, reports in some online publications on Wednesday that the football-governing body has slammed a ban on Super Eagles’ forward Victor Osimhen from the team, for his social media outburst few days ago.

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi expressed amazement at the reports, saying the Federation has neither instructed a process nor has a process been concluded to ban the player from the National Team.

“The NFF hereby implores the media to join hands with the body to positively resolve issues and then focus on the big picture all the time, rather than needlessly escalate certain matters. There was no official communication from the NFF, yet some persons have gone to town to talk about a ban on Osimhen from the National Team. This is not good at all.

BREAKING: Tapswap suspends allocation of tokens indefinitely

by Folarin Kehinde June 19, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Popular tap-to-earn program Tapswap powered by TON Blockchain has announced that the distribution of tokens to users has been put on hold indefinitely while officials look for the best ways to compensate tap-to-earn users.

Head of Communications, Tapswap, John Robbin, announced this on X space on Wednesday.

Since its February 15, 2024 launch, the app, which required users to continuously tap the icon in the centre of the Telegram Tapswap bot screen to mine coins, has accumulated over 50 million users. Nigerians have been using the app to tap their phone screens in an attempt to make money.

Robbin said: “The token launch was postponed until July 1. The new date will be communicated.

“We will allocate a significant part of the tokens to the community to retain the tappers. We want you all to be part of the tapswap community.

“We need a token airdrop to be a win-win for all of us. We have started communicating with many exchanges and platforms.”

The head of communications said that anybody abusing the system to farm taps and manipulate the game would be banned, with community members doing background checks and asking for the patience of true tappers.

Speaking on the mining processes, he said, “Just open the app and tap on it; that will give you shares. The more you tap and the more upgrades you do, the more shares you will have when we finalize the tokens on it. The more tokens you want to have, the more tapping you have to do.”

On the booster option, which has already ended, the representative said it was not something new, adding: “We have room exponentially faster than we thought, and then to develop the game plan further, we introduced a paid feature to make their capital, but it was not mandated on the users.

“We introduced the limited x2 donation because the new influx of users kept coming in, and we needed them to make something out of it and get a fair allocation at TGE.

“It was a platform that allowed people who joined recently to compete with people who started earlier. It is gone for now, but we are looking forward to using the money we earned from it to improve the game in the future.

“It is all going to our 25 staffers working around the clock to sustain the app. We want to be here for a very long time.”
