Tuition Hike: Global Rights charges UI to jettison move to expel students over peaceful protest

by Folarin Kehinde July 4, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Global Rights, a non-governmental organization has charged the management of the University of Ibadan (UI) to immediately rescind its expulsion of 3 students – namely Olamide Gbadegeshin, Aduwo Ayodele, and Nice Linus for engaging in a peaceful protest against the sudden hike in tuition fees by the University’s management.

The 3 students, alongside one Olorunfemi Adeyeye, were apprehended by army officers while protesting the fee increase at the inauguration of the Student Union government on May 13, 2024.

The organization made this known in a press release made available to LEADING REPORTERS on Thursday stated that while the action of the students have posed an inconvenience to the administration of the university, extant laws clearly prescribe their right to protest peacefully.

Global Rights explained that it is a well-recognized fact that peaceful protests, especially by young people, have often been an effective means of bringing about positive social change in democratic societies all over the world hence university of Ibadan should therefore not be averse to its students exercising this right.

They maintained that University of Ibadan has a duty to maintain its educational standards and responsibilities to its tutors while navigating the harsh economic terrain, but surely, the university should understand why students will feel the need to protest a significant increase in tuition fees.

Global Rights further advocated that any plans to expel Olamide Gbadegeshin of the Institute of African Studies, Aduwo Ayodele of the History Department (200 level) and Nice Linus from the University of Ibadan be immediately jettisoned.

Also the students should be allowed to resume their studies without any fear of intimidation, harassment, or reprisals from the management and staff of the University of Ibadan.

They added that the security agents who arrested them and Olorunfemi Adeyeye on May 13, 2024, because they peacefully protested, should issue them a swift and unreserved apology.

“The University of Ibadan lead the way for other tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria by engaging mechanisms that encourage ample and robust interactions with students.

“On our part, we stand solidly behind dissenting voices who choose to participate in their governance and seek social justice utilizing their freedom of expression through peaceful protests.”

JUST IN: National Assembly grants full Autonomy to Local Govt

by Folarin Kehinde July 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Assembly on Tuesday, granted full financial and administrative autonomy to all the 774 local council authorities across Nigeria by amending section 124 of the nation’s constitution.

The section provides a consequential provision for the making of the local councils, a full third tier government without undue interference from the state governments.

The amendment was one of the 22 others approved by the House of Representatives last week and ratified by the Senate on Tuesday.

Both chambers had through a conference committee harmonised versions of the amendment into the constitution carried out by each of them last month.

By the development, the National Assembly had ratified all the 23 clauses and sections that had been amended by both chambers.

The newly amended document which would be sent to States Houses of Assembly, for approval, also approved the creation of the Office of Auditor General of the Local Government as well as the State Local Government Service Commission.

The section equally deleted the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) from the constitution thereby vesting the powers to conduct council elections on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

It however, retained the immunity clause in the constitution for the President and Governors by adopting the Senate version of the amendments on the issue and rejected the House of Representatives version which removed the immunity clause.

The National Assembly also made provisions for Independent Candidacy in future elections in Nigeria by amending sections 65 and 106 of the 1999 constitution.

A five-storey building belonging to Rochas Okorocha, a former governor of Imo State, has collapsed.

The building was located along Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja.

Eyewitnesses say the building, which was under renovation, collapsed on Tuesday evening.

It was gathered that security operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command immediately cordoned off the area.

Eyewitnesses said some persons might have been trapped in the building.

“There is a possibility that there could be some people inside the collapsed building who may have died. I saw two people being pulled out from the rubble now and taken to the hospital while rescue operations were ongoing. The emergency responders are not coordinated yet for efficient operations,” an eyewitness said.

But a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Command, Josephine Adeh, said three persons were rescued from the collapsed building.

The statement partly reads: “The FCT Police Command hereby confirms that yesterday, July 1, 2024, about 8:40 p.m., there was a building collapse at Unity House, Area 11 by Nkwere Street.

“In response to the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, psc, mni, promptly moved to the scene with multiple patrol teams as first responders to cordon off the area for possible rescue.

Sources within the Commission revealed that the deceased had been experiencing issues with his immediate superior, a female boss, for some time.

“Return the 22 official vehicles in your possession within 7 days” Edo Govt tells Ex-deputy, Shaibu

by Folarin Kehinde July 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Edo State government has issued a public notice demanding the return of 22 official government vehicles currently in the possession of former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.

The directive in a statement signed by Chris Osa Nehikhare, Hon. Commissioner of Communication and Orientation, sets a strict deadline for compliance.

“The former Deputy Governor is given a seven-day ultimatum from today to return the vehicles,” stated Commissioner Nehikhare. He emphasised that failing to do so would prompt action from relevant security agencies tasked with retrieval.

The list of vehicles to be returned includes various models such as the 2021 model Toyota Landcruiser, Toyota Prado Jeep, Toyota Hilux Van, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Sienna, Jin Bei Hiase, Mitsubishi Pajero, and an armored Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep.

Each vehicle is identified with specific VIN numbers and details regarding their condition (brand new or pre-owned).

“These vehicles are essential for government operations, and their prompt return is crucial,” Commissioner Nehikhare emphasised.

“The Edo State Government urges the cooperation of all stakeholders to ensure the vehicles are retrieved and returned to official use without delay.

Shaibu was impeached in April by the State House of Assembly, putting an end to a prolonged conflict with Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The impeachment took place during a plenary session in Benin City, following months of strained relations between the two leaders.

The decision came after a seven-man committee, appointed by Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa, investigated allegations of misconduct against Shaibu. Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian disclosed that the committee’s report found Shaibu not guilty of perjury but culpable for disclosing government secrets, recommending his impeachment on those grounds.

With 18 out of 19 members voting in favour, exceeding the required two-thirds majority, the Assembly approved the recommendation and subsequently impeached Shaibu. Speaker Agbebaku instructed Clerk Yahaya Omogbai to deliver the impeachment notice to Governor Obaseki for final approval.

Meanwhile, Shaibu, who had contested the impeachment in court, denounced it as an assault on democracy, asserting his legal right to seek the 2024 governorship under the PDP.

The bill seeking to create Adada State, an additional state in the South-East geo-political zone, on Tuesday passed its first reading in the House of Senate.

The bill, which has been cited as the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2024 (SB. 482)” was sponsored by the lawmaker representing the Enugu North Senatorial District, Senator Okey Ezea.

The bill, according to the lawmaker, seeks to amend Section 3(1) and the First Schedule, Part 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to allow for the creation of another state in the South-East region.

The move was aimed at bringing the number of states in the region to six as it is in other geo-political zones.

LEADING REPORTERS reports that the agitation for the creation of Adada State had started since 1983 when the late Senator Isaiah Ani, who represented the Nsukka senatorial zone in the Second Republic presented a bill.

University union to begin strike thursday over unpaid salary arrears

by Folarin Kehinde July 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have threatened to ground activities on campuses nationwide from Thursday except the federal government pays the withheld salary arrears of their members.

SSANU said this in a communique at the end of its 48 regular National Executive Council meeting at the University of Benin and signed by its President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim.

On June 20, 2024, the university workers, through a letter addressed to the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, gave the government a two-week ultimatum to pay the salary arrears.

In the letter jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi and Ibrahim, the unions accused the government of neglect and insincerity.

SSANU, in its communique on Tuesday in Abuja, said despite all promises by the Ministers of Education and Labour, including the House of Representatives to pay the arrears, the federal government has continued to “dribble SSANU, even after the mutual agreement to suspend the one-week warning strike in March this year.”

Minister of State for Education, Dr Tanko Sununu promised to respond to the report when he was contacted.

“NEC in session once again expresses utmost dismay at the unprecedented level of Government’s insensitivity and deliberate resolve to cause chaos in the university system by adopting the divide and rule policy to set unions on a collision course through preferential treatment of one union over others.

Recall that SSANU and other unions were compelled by the government to embark on strike in 2022 over the government’s refusal to honour a collective Bargaining Agreement willingly signed by all parties. At the end of the strike, the then Buhari Government further signed an elaborate agreement among which was the non victimisation clause.

“However, the government made a selective payment of the withheld salaries. While we do not begrudge the payment made to our colleagues, we expected the same gesture to be extended to SSANU and NASU which legally complied with all procedures before embarking on the Industrial action. Despite all promises and media hypes by the Ministers of Education and Labour, including the House of Representatives to pay these arrears, the government has continued to dribble SSANU, even after the mutual agreement to suspend the one-week warning strike in March this year.
