Experts advocate for organic farming practice to reduce food crisis in Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde July 26, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

In a bid to curb the current food crisis in Nigeria, experts in the agricultural sector has advised Nigerians to adopt the use organic farming which they say would improve soil productivity, boost produce yield and reduce food crisis in Nigeria.

Climate change advocate and trainer for the multiplier group for organic agriculture, Mrs Stella Uzochukwu-Dennis while speaking at the knowledge centre for organic agriculture workshop in Abuja on Friday emphasized the need for organic agriculture stating that Nigerians should engage in subsistence farming and use organic manures which will reduce over-dependence on International bodies to feed the nation.

Stella explained that the practice of organic agriculture will ensure food sufficiency for the nation, reduce use of fertilizer and chemicals whilst improving seed sustainability.

Meanwhile, Stella noted that the 2- day workshop will train farmers, students and extension workers which aim at demystifying the practice of organic farming adding farmers must be intentional about the practice to ensure food security.

“We have about 20 of us who are learning about the agriculture. So KCOA, which is the knowledge of organic agriculture in Africa, is one of the organizations that has seen to us since for West Africa, Nigeria is one of the countries that were chosen that speaks English.

“The whole essence is just to tell them, you know, like today there’s reality on ground. A lot of people thought they were already doing organic agriculture, but they got to know that they weren’t practicing organic agriculture because organic agriculture is very intentional. We have to be intentional about it to be able to get it right”.

Coordinator Abuja Chapter of Association of Organic Practitioners of Nigeria, and a sustainable agriculture and food security expert trained in UK, Mrs Saidat Shonoiki stated that knowledge capacity about organic farming is key which will bring about positive attitude towards farming.

“They believe organic is all about you want to go and stress me, you want to go and do it. No, it’s about knowledge.

“In other climes in the Western world, farmers are the richest. So how can we go back to that? In those days, cocoa farmers are the richest. So let’s go back.
Let’s encourage challenge in agriculture. Let them be motivated and then they have access to the knowledge and the minimal support system they need to have. We’ll continue to see the change we want to see.”

Shonoiki emphasized the need for backyard farming and strong advocacy for organic farming to ensure food sufficiency in Nigeria.

“Let’s go back to family farming, backyard farming. Let it be a strong advocacy. We have learned that and now have been abandoned.

“Let people have access to it. I’m a beneficiary of that family farming when I was growing up and I see the value in it. We are never short of basic food like curry, like yam, like maize, even our vegetables.

“We need to take it serious. It’s one of the UN declaration. Family farming is there. Go and look at it because they have research. They have seen that family farming is one of the things, the other is for food security in the world.” She added.

The workshop was organized and sponsored by Knowledge Centre for Organic Agriculture and Agroecology in Africa (KCOA) and Fédération Nationale pour l’Agriculture Biologique – (FENAB)

written by Folarin Kehinde

Ahead of the proposed nationwide protest, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has deployed 4,200 policemen across the nooks and crannies of the nation’s capital.

The command also announced the deployment of explosive ordnance device experts at various strategic locations.

In a statement on Friday by its spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, the command said the deployment was to ensure public safety, protect protesters, and prevent the protests from being hijacked by non-state actors.

She added that there would be raids on identified black spots, uncompleted buildings/shanties, and stop-and-search operations, among others, in collaboration with sister security agencies.

She said, “The FCT Police Command, in anticipation of the planned nationwide protest by some human rights activists and Nigerian youths to publicly express their displeasure over hunger and hardship, has proactively deployed material and human resources across the nooks and crannies of the nation’s capital

Adeh noted that the FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, warned that the destruction of public and private properties would not be tolerated during the protest.

She said, “The Commissioner of Police FCT, while acknowledging the right of residents to protest, advises that it should be peaceful.

“The CP vows to resist all forms of violent protest and lawlessness, as the police will not be stampeded into allowing the destruction of public and private properties or loss of lives.”

Adeh urged residents to be vigilant and take advantage of the police emergency lines to report suspicious activities.

Leading reporters reports that the nationwide protest is scheduled to be held from August 1 to 10, 2024.
The protest is over the hardship experienced by citizens in the country.

IGP Directs Personnel to Work With Military to Stop Planned Nationwide Protest

by Folarin Kehinde July 26, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A directive from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has outlawed all forms of protests between August 1 and 10, 2024.

This move comes as Nigerians gear up for nationwide protests against bad governance and hardship during the same period.

It should be recalled that the government, through Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, had earlier said that citizens have the right to peaceful protests.

A leaked memo from police commissioners to state criminal investigation departments and other police units reveals a contradictory stance.

The memo states that the IGP has ordered police units to mobilize personnel and equipment, collaborate with other agencies and the military, occupy strategic points and engage with community stakeholders.

The memo stressed that “no form of protest must be allowed” during the specified period.

“The INGENPOL (inspector general of police) directs that you be proactive X mobilise well kitted and equipped personnel yours X synergies with other sister agencies and the military X take over all strategic points in your AOR (Areas of Responsibility) x deploy undercover for intelligence gathering x disperse unlawful gathering x be in heart-to-heart conversation with community stakeholders x no form of protest must be allowed during the period,” the memo said.

Ginika Tor, Federal Character Commissioner representing Enugu State and Global President of OPI-Igbo Kwenu for Asiwaju-Shettima Group, has commended President Bola Tinubu for signing the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law. She also praised Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for sponsoring the bill.

Tor hailed President Tinubu’s move as a significant step towards addressing the lingering effects of the war in the Southeast region. The SEDC, covering Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states, marks a milestone in Tinubu’s administration, representing a giant leap and renewed hope for the Igbo people.

The SEDC aims to expedite action on reconciliation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction in Igbo land, addressing the unfulfilled promises of General Yakubu Gowon’s 3Rs (Reconciliation, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction) in 1970. The commission will focus on reconstructing and rehabilitating roads, houses, and infrastructure, tackling ecological problems, and addressing environmental and developmental challenges in the South-East states.

President Tinubu signed the SEDC Bill into law on Tuesday, alongside the North West Development Commission Bill. The SEDC will receive and manage funds from the federation account for regional reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts.

Tor called on the Igbo people to unite and seek peace among themselves, urging an end to infighting and pull-downs. She emphasized the need for integrity, transparency, commitment, and dedication to service among those who will lead the Commission. Tor prayed that the Commission’s essence would not be defeated by abuse of power, corruption, or negligence, as seen in some previous commissions.

If well-managed, Tor believes the SEDC will command the loyalty of the Southeast region and foster a sense of unity and purpose.

‘Totally satanic’, MURIC calls for ban of movie with Nancy Isime in Niqab

by Folarin Kehinde July 25, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Muslim Rights Concern has called for the ban of the yet-to-be-released movie where popular actress Nancy Isime and other actresses wore purdah, an Islamic full covering popularly called the Niqab, and brandished dangerous weapons.

The group described the movie as ‘satanic’, adding that it depicts Muslim women as criminals and incites the public against them.

The call was made in a statement signed by the Executive Director, MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Thursday.

The statement read, “An extremely anti-Muslim film has been released into the Nigerian movie industry. The upcoming film, which was recently unveiled by Nancy Isime, shows women in purdah brandishing dangerous weapons and robbing banks. It is Islamophobia taken to the highest level. This film is satanic, repugnant, and provocative.

“It is aimed at portraying Muslim women as criminals with a violent proclivity. The film is capable of inciting the public against Muslim women. It may also expose Muslims in general to public ridicule and opprobrium.

“We believe that the film is the handiwork of Muslim-haters and part of the plot to stop Muslim women from wearing hijab and niqab. The plot was hatched a long time ago, and its execution began in the schools. This plot was boldly and diligently confronted in Nigerian courts by Muslims until the highest court in the land made a pronouncement on it. This Satanic film is the latest effort in the war against hijab.

Akintola maintained that the film is capable of setting Nigeria on fire if urgent action is not taken by the relevant authorities while urging the National Film and Video Censors Board to investigate and place an immediate ban on the coming film.

“To Nigerian Muslims who have inundated our communication channels with video clips, voice notes, and other types of messages, we have this to say: please remain calm and peaceful. You have spoken loud and clear.

BREAKING: We Won’t Allow You Burn Down This Country, Military Warns Protesters

by Folarin Kehinde July 25, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Defence Headquarters has warned those mobilising for a nationwide protest that while it is their right to protest, it will not condone anarchy.

Daily Trust reports that some persons are mobilising for nationwide protest slated for August 1 to August 10, 2024.

Tagged #EndBadGovernace, organisers of the protest have lamented about widespread hunger and inflation in the land,

Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, said the military won’t allow anarchy to befall Nigeria.

He added that the military has uncovered plots by unscrupulous elements to hijack the protest and turn it into a violent one by attacking innocent Nigerians and their businesses.

“While citizens have the right to peaceful protest, they do not have the right to mobilise for anarchy and unleash terror.”

“I will say that the contemporary context of this planned protest is to shadow what is happening in Kenya and I will add that what is happening in Kenya in terms of protest, one, it is violence, two, it remains unresolved as we speak.

“The level of violence being envisaged can only be described as a stage for anarchy. The Armed Forces on its part will not stand by and allow anarchy to befall our nation. This is because we have seen wars and have witnessed anarchy in countries with which we have operated, particularly in times of ECOMOG (Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group) and during our peacekeeping operations in various countries.”

Plans to counter protests in Lagos with Oro Festival spark controversy

by Folarin Kehinde July 25, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Traditional worshippers have announced plans to hold the Oro Festival from August 1 to August 15, coinciding with the scheduled #EndBadGovt protest.

The announcement has sparked suspicions that the cultural event might be a strategic move to counter the protests.

The notice, which went viral on social media, warned residents and visitors of the impending rituals.

It stated: “Please be informed that the Oro Festival will be observed in various communities across Lagos from the 1st of August to August 15. This traditional Yoruba cultural event involves significant rituals.”

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has denied any involvement in orchestrating the festival to undermine the protest.

Gboyega Akosile, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor said the protesters and the traditional worshippers have the right to their activities.

Speaking to Peoples Gazette, Akosile said, “I saw it just like every other person did. Did you see any signatory to this statement? The answer is no! If it’s not endorsed, then it’s a nullity.

However, traditional religious worshippers have the right to carry out their worship at any time. Whether it coincides with the dates of the protests or not. I’m not sure it removes anything from the fact that they have their right to carry out their traditional worship.”

Akosile further advised both parties to respect each other’s rights to prevent any conflicts.

“You want to protest, I want to do my worship, it’s my right. It is now right versus right. As long as your own right does not disturb my own right, there won’t be crisis, let everybody be doing their thing,” he said.

Despite the government’s assurances, there are concerns about possible clashes between the protesters and the Oro adherents.

Akosile, however, noted that security agencies would be on standby to ensure that any protests that turn violent do not escalate into a bloody confrontation.

The Oro Festival’s timing has raised eyebrows, particularly because of its historical use during politically sensitive periods.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, a similar declaration of the Oro Festival saw ritual pots placed at several junctions and in front of houses across the state.

Just three days before the March 18, 2023, governorship election, the traditional ruler of the Ikate-Elegushi Kingdom, Saheed Ademola, declared a three-day “Oro rites,” claiming it was an annual event.

Critics, however, believed it was a tactic to deter voters opposed to the ruling party.

ITU Ranks Nigeria High in Digital Transformation Readiness

by Folarin Kehinde July 25, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A new report of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), has ranked Nigeria very high at 71 per cent, in comparative legal, policy and governance frameworks towards G5 – advanced state of readiness for digital transformation known as G5 with Germany, Finland and Singapore leading the global chart.

In the report conducted by the ITU, and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and unveiled by Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani in Abuja on Monday, Nigeria was ranked among Africa’s top seven BEMECS 5G Readiness Index, which represents the country’s readiness to deploy and adopt mass-market 5G networks.

Titled, Collaborative Regulation: Accelerating Nigeria’s Digital Transformation, and presented at the Digital Economy Complex, Mbora, Abuja by ITU’s Kagwira Nkonge, the report, among other things, presented a case study for ‘collaborative regulation review to assess and support Nigeria’s transition towards collaborative digital governance, evidence-based policy making and agile regulation in the digital economy”.

The report, which was presented to a cross section of key industry stakeholders including service providers, government agencies, representatives of multilateral institutions, West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly (WATRA), Africa Telecommunications Union (ATU), among others, was also designed to complement existing cross-country benchmarks in which features of countries policy and regulatory environment are assessed.

The features of countries policy and regulatory environment are assessed according to the pillars of the Generations of Regulation frameworks which tracks telecom regulatory maturity towards digital transformation readiness, designated at G5 Advanced State of Readiness”, and for which Nigeria currently stands at G4.

Advanced State of Readiness is benchmarked against four critical levels of accomplishments which include national collaborative governance, policy design principles, digital development toolbox, digital economic policy agenda, with Nigeria scoring 91 per cent in regulatory capacity; 82 per cent in Market Rules; 81 per cent in Collaborative Governance; 76 per cent in Legal Instruments for ICT/Telecom markets; 69 per cent in National Digital Agenda Policy, among other benchmarks.

Dr. Tijani, in his remarks at the event, commended the ITU and partner agencies and consultants that actualised the report; and expressed Federal Government’s commitment “to utilise this report as a navigational aid towards attainment of our regulatory objectives and policies outlines towards achieving a robust digital economy”.

“That is what we will continue to do as a government, ensuring that we can put ourselves in a place to have cutting-edge modern regulations in place to ensure that business is done properly in our sector and to ensure that, where possible, increase the local content of the sector as well,” he said.

Dr. Tijani noted that NCC has adapted over the years in response to how its role and mandate have changed. He explained, “Fifteen, twenty years ago, NCC was just regulating the telecommunications sector, today, NCC regulates the foundation for which any economy would be prosperous.”

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, who hosted the presentation, welcomed the indicators that promote effective regulation, attraction of greater investment, and development of innovative models for broader digital inclusion.

He emphasised that collaborative regulation would support Nigeria’s transition towards effective digital governance, evidence-based policy making and agile regulation in the nation’s digital economy.
