written by Folarin Kehinde

The leader of Oyotunji African Village in Beaufort County, South Carolina, USA, Adegbolu Abiogemo Adefunmi, also known as Oba Adejuyigbe Adefunmi II, was allegedly stabbed to death by his sister during a heated argument.

According to abcnews4, the incident occurred on Monday, July 29, 2024. South Carolina authorities received a report of the stabbing around 2:45 p.m. at the village on Bryant Lane, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The 47-year-old victim was taken to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.

The suspect, identified as Akiba Kasale Meredith, 53, fled the scene on foot but was found shortly afterward.

She has been charged with murder and is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center. Meredith’s bond has been deferred.

The spokesperson mentioned that these ceremonies usually last two to three days.

Adefunmi was remembered fondly by locals, including workers at a nearby gas station who said, “The King would stop by every morning for a cup of coffee—he was a good man and will truly be missed.”

Oba Adejuyigbe Adefunmi II was the current leader of Oyotunji African Village, a cultural and spiritual center for the Yoruba people in America.

He succeeded his father, Oba Efuntola Oseijeman Adelabu Adefunmi I, who founded the village in 1970.

Under his leadership since 2005, the village has continued to reflect traditional Yoruba culture while modernizing.

The case is still under investigation by local authorities

“I cannot pay #70,000 minimum wage” APC Governor tackle FG

by Folarin Kehinde July 31, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, has revealed that his state cannot afford to pay the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage.

The governor, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), made this statement during a meeting with stakeholders on the planned nationwide #Endbadgovernance protest at the banquet hall of Gombe Government House on Tuesday.

Yahaya attributed his inability to pay the minimum wage to the lean allocation to the state.

He said, “I cannot pay the N70,000 minimum wage, and I suspect many other states are in the same predicament.” This statement comes after President Bola Tinubu recently assented to the minimum wage following an agreement with joint labour unions.

However, the governor commended the Federal Government for its initiative to donate rice to states, expressing concern over the delay in receiving the supplies in Gombe. He stated, “We are yet to receive the Federal Government’s 20 trucks of rice to Gombe State.”

Despite the challenges, Yahaya emphasized the state’s commitment to providing relief to its citizens, citing previous palliative distributions and ongoing investments in human capital development, education, health, and agriculture, among others.

The governor also addressed the planned protest, reiterating the importance of peaceful and orderly conduct. He acknowledged the role of civil society organisations, labour unions, and traders in maintaining social stability and economic resilience, calling for continued cooperation and dialogue to navigate these challenging times.

Presenting a list of demands on behalf of Non-Governmental Organisations, the Chairman of the Gombe Network of Civil Society Organisations, Yusuf Ibrahim, urged the governor to release the list of stocked palliatives.

We’ll Be Eating While You March – Senate President Akpabio mocks Nigerians Ahead of Planned Protest

by Folarin Kehinde July 31, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has told Nigerians that while they protest against the government, he and other officials will continue to enjoy the benefits of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Akpabio made this statement at a meeting with the NDDC executive management, Niger Delta ethnic nationalities, and other stakeholders in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, few days ahead of the planned nationwide protests from August 1 to 10.

The protests, organized mainly by youths, are against poverty, unemployment, and hardship in the country.

While experts worry that the protests could cost the economy around N4 trillion and pose grave dangers to the already fragile economy, Akpabio remains unfazed.

He said, “All of us feel the impact of what is happening now. But we are aware it will be for a short while,” the senate president said.

“MD, I want to thank you for what you said. You said we are not interested in regime change, let us own this government. Those who want to protest can protest. But let us be there eating — I must thank the Niger Delta.

“So in conclusion, we acknowledge the fact that the impact of oil and gas activities in our region has done immeasurable damage to our people.”

The Senate President appealed to Nigerians to give the Tinubu administration more time to implement its policies.

He said, “As the Senate president, I want to appeal to all Nigerian youths to give this administration an opportunity for most of the policies to mature.”

NIN-SIM linkage: MTN Nigeria shut offices nationwide

by Folarin Kehinde July 30, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

MTN Nigeria on Tuesday announced the closure of its shops across Nigeria, asking its customers to use its digital channels for any support they may need.

Although the company did not give any reason for the closure, this may not be unconnected with the eruption of violence at some of its shops on Monday as customers besieged its support centres to unbar their lines that have been blocked over NIN-SIM linkage issues.

Recall that millions of lines were barred by all telecom operators including Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile over the weekend in line with the directive of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

In a short notice to its subscribers posted on its Customer Care handle on X, MTN said:

“Please, be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July. We are available 24/7 to support you via our digital channels.”

The company, however, did not state if the shops would be reopened after today.

Lagos Govt to tax content creators, remote workers, influencers N200b annually

by Folarin Kehinde July 30, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Lagos State government has unveiled an ambitious plan to generate N200 billion annually by expanding its income tax base to include remote workers and leveraging digital solutions for enhanced revenue collection, Nairametrics is reporting.

According to the synopsis document for the EKO Revenue Plus Summit, which is expected to hold on September 25th and 26th, 2024, with the theme “Unlocking New Revenue Streams for Lagos State”, this southwest state plans to raise N5 trillion internally generated revenue (IGR) from four major sectors.

One of such sectors is the digital economy, through which Lagos State plans to introduce a Resident Global Digital Citizen Tax Management System, targeting remote workers, foreign firms, and digital influencers. This system will also involve accreditation and licensing of digital economy operators, supported by a robust platform including e-Portal, Market Place, and a Recovery Platform.

According to the synopsis document, the initiative’s estimated budget is N250 million, covering portal construction, data mining, partnerships, stakeholder engagements, and communications. The southwest state aims to generate N200 billion annually from about two million people in this area.

With the EKO Revenue Plus Summit happening in September, Lagos State plans to hit N5 trillion in internally generated revenue (IGR) under the current governorship of Babajide Sanwo-Olu. A part of the document read: “Increasing Lagos State IGR to 5 Trillion Naira in the life of the current administration requires a comprehensive and innovative approach that leverages technology, strengthens tax administration, expands the tax base and explores new revenue stream options, especially in the non-tax areas, while optimizing the existing processes.”

by Folarin Kehinde July 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Protesters have blocked Kaduna Road, a highway in Niger State linking Kaduna to Abuja.

This comes three days before the planned 10-day nationwide protest by some groups to demand an improvement in Nigeria’s economic situation.

The protesters carried placards with several inscriptions such as ‘We Are Not Slaves’, ‘Enough is Enough’; ‘Stop Anti-Masses Policies’, ‘Hardship Is Unbearable’ and ‘Fuel Subsidy Must Be Back.’

Monday’s protesters appeared unwilling to wait till Thursday as they chanted anti-government slogans.

The organisers of the nationwide protests want an improvement in the cost of living and a reversal of some government policies, particularly the removal of petrol subsidies.

“We’ll Use Eagle Square With Or Without Permission”, Protesters dare Wike

by Folarin Kehinde July 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Organisers of the planned protest against hunger and hardship, the Take It Back Movement, has vowed to go ahead with the protest at Eagle Square in Abuja, whether or not the government approves usage of the venue.

The Mobilization Director of the organisation, Damilare Adenola, who was speaking on the Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, said the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had been written to for permission.

The youth leader had signed a letter addressed to the minister, seeking use of the facility.

The letter was dated July 26, 2024, and was broadcast on social media platforms.

However, as of Saturday, the minister said he hadn’t received the letter.

“Who are these people who want to protest? They have applied to me to grant Eagle Square. Do you apply to me through social media?”

“You will write a letter to the minister. I will see you; who are you; what do you want to do? How many days do you want to spend? How much will you pay?

“You must apply properly. You must pay what we call security cost so that if there is any damage to the facility, we will take from that security cost and repair it.

“We don’t just give people because you have applied. You must fulfil the conditions. People have paid for Eagle Square, and you said you have applied to me now.

“So, I should go and cancel the other people’s own because you want to protest? It is first come, first served.

“I am not saying that people should not protest, but not protest that is aimed at destabilising the government,” he added.

However, Adenola, on Sunday, blamed the delay in the delivery of the letter on bureaucratic bottlenecks in government but said the minister would get the letter unfailingly on Monday.

“It is possible that the receipt of the letter is being delayed by most likely bureaucracy in government or the minister is likely being insincere about receiving the letter.

“If he (Wike) insists that he hasn’t received it, the alternative is that he was served by publication because many Nigerian ministries streamline what to receive or not. If he says he didn’t get it physically, then we could as well say that he was served by publication.

“The truth is that the Eagle Square is a public property. When I saw the video of the minister, I was amazed because I saw the minister asking us to pay rent, pay security fees and all that.
