BREAKING: Police disperse youths attempting to break Kano store during protest

by Folarin Kehinde August 1, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Operatives of the Kano State Police Command have dispersed some youths who tried to break into a store along Zoo road in the state capital.

The suspects had attempted to force their way into the two storey building housing Sadaraki Stores.

But the police quickly moved in to stall their action. However, before the arrival of security operatives, the suspects had destroyed windows of the building.

So far, there is low compliance with the protest against hunger in the ancient city as many residents are indoor.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had, on Wednesday, said he had intelligence that evil-minded persons were plotting to hijack the protest.

The governor, who invited genuine protesters to Government House, Kano, warned trouble makers to steer clear off the state.

Indecent embrace and kiss display between French President Macron and sports minister at Olympics raises eyebrows

by Folarin Kehinde August 1, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The internet is buzzing about awkward photos showing French President Emmanuel Macron sharing a touchy-feely moment with his sports minister during the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony with some comparing the affectionate display to a lovers’ embrace.

The photo shows Macron, 46, tightly gripping the arm of Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, 46, a former professional tennis player who is the country’s minister of sports and, as one X user pointed out, his subordinate.

Oudéa-Castéra in turn clutches Macron’s bicep with one hand, the other wrapped affectionately around his neck while planting a kiss on the French leader’s neck.
Exacerbating the photo’s cringe factor is the

positioning of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who appears to be conspicuously averting his gaze from the display.

“Gabriel Attal, he pretends to look elsewhere! He doesn’t know where to stand!” one user wrote.
“It’s my lover that I’m kissing like this. Embarrassing,” said another.
“I find this photo indecent, it’s not worthy of a president and a minister,” a disapproving poster seethed.

The curious photo was brought to people’s attention by French magazine Madame Figaro, which called the kiss “strange” and claimed Oudéa-Castéra had a penchant for drawing attention to herself.

Oudéa-Castéra — or AOC, as she’s known in France, believe it or not — has been front and center as the first Olympics in France in 100 years has come to life.

Earlier this month, she took a dip in the Seine River to allay fears of unsafe E.coli levels in the famous waterway, where several events are scheduled to take place during the games.

A pre-race triathlon event in it was canceled Sunday over water quality concerns.

Macron named Oudéa-Castéra France’s education minister in January, but removed her from the role after less than a month following revelations that she had her children educated at posh private schools and made disparaging remarks about public schools where she lived.
Not every commenter on X was scandalized by the celebratory hug.
One user defended it as “a slightly warm congratulation to celebrate the moment.”

FGN Power Company Signs $118m Contract with Elsewedy and Power China for Distribution Lines Rehabilitation and Construction under PPI

by Folarin Kehinde July 31, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The FGN Power Company (FGNPC) announced the signing of a major Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Financing (EPC&F) contract with Elsewedy and Power China for the rehabilitation and construction of distribution lines under Phase I of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI).

The contract, valued at US$118,148,469.72, involves the construction and rehabilitation of 2,670 kilometres of 33kV, 11kV, and 400V distribution lines across the country.

This project is designed to complement ongoing mid-stream transmission projects to secure power delivery to residential, commercial, and industrial clusters across Nigeria. By upgrading the distribution network, FGNPC aims to significantly increase electricity reliability and accessibility for millions of Nigerians.

The Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “This project marks a significant step towards achieving our goal of reliable and sustainable electricity for all Nigerians. We are committed to working with top-tier partners like Elsewedy and Power China to deliver on this promise.”

Mr Kenny Anuwe, Managing Director of FGN Power Company, stated: “We are delighted to partner with Elsewedy and Power China on this transformative project. Their proven expertise and commitment to excellence make them ideal partners for delivering this critical infrastructure. Siemens, known for its strengths in advanced technology and innovation, does not specialise in distribution lines.

Therefore, it was a strategic decision to collaborate with Elsewedy, bearing in mind the successful partnership between both companies in Egypt. This partnership with Elsewedy Electric will ensure the highest quality and efficiency in delivering the necessary infrastructure. Together, we will combine our strengths and deliver comprehensive solutions to meet Nigeria’s growing energy and infrastructure needs.”

The project will deliver construction of 687 kilometres of new distribution lines (greenfield) and the rehabilitation of 1,983 kilometres of existing lines (brownfield). FGNPC has worked closely with Enugu and Benin DisCos and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to develop a comprehensive project definition aligned with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Mr Islam Isharawy, Country Manager at Elsewedy, added: “We are honoured to contribute our expertise to Nigeria’s ambitious energy goals. This project represents a significant opportunity to upgrade Nigeria’s power distribution infrastructure.”

Mr Tino Dong, Vice President for Central and West Africa at Power China, commented: “Power China believes in the President’s vision for the power sector and is committed to high-quality and reliable power solutions as part of our interventions. We look forward to a successful collaboration with FGNPC and Elsewedy to bring improved power distribution to Nigeria.”
