JUST IN: Former Anambra State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker dies during routine exercise

by Folarin Kehinde August 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A former Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Hartford Oseke, is dead.

Hon. Oseke was said to have slumped and died during a routine exercise at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, Anambra State.

Reports indicate that he collapsed and was rushed to Apex Hospital Awka in an attempt to revive him, but unfortunately, he passed away before medical intervention could succeed.

At Oseke’s country home in Umuawulu, Awka South Local Government Area, relatives were seen in deep mourning, with many remaining too grief-stricken to comment publicly on the tragedy.

Members of the State House of Assembly, who had served alongside Oseke, paid tribute to him as both a colleague and a unifying force within the Assembly.

One member, who preferred to remain unnamed, described Oseke as a “good man” and a “uniting force” during his tenure in the Assembly.

“I cannot make an official statement for now because it is left for the Speaker of the Assembly to do that, and you know that Oseke was his set at the Assembly,” the member told New Telegraph.

“But all that I can say is that he was a good man and a uniting force while he was at the hallowed chambers of the State Assembly,” he added.

Hon. Oseke served two terms in the Anambra State House of Assembly, representing the Awka South 2 State Constituency.

During his second term, he served as the Deputy Speaker of the state legislative body.

Remittance inflows surge by 130% to $553 Million in July 2024 – CBN

by Folarin Kehinde August 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reported a 130% surge in remittance inflows, with the figure reaching $553 million in July 2024.

According to the CBN, this milestone represents the highest monthly remittance inflows ever recorded, marking a significant increase from the same period in 2023.

This is according to a statement by Hakama Sidi Ali, the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.

The CBN credits this surge in remittance inflows to a series of strategic policy measures designed to enhance liquidity in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.

The statement read: “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reported a significant increase in remittance inflows, reaching $553 million in July 2024, a 130 per cent increase from the corresponding period in 2023.

“This figure represents the highest monthly total inflows on record and reflects ongoing efforts by the CBN to enhance liquidity in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.

“The substantial growth in remittance receipts is attributable to policy measures introduced by the CBN to enhance liquidity in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market. These measures include granting licenses to new International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs), implementing a willing buyer-willing seller model, and enabling timely access to naira liquidity for IMTOs.

“Diaspora remittances are a crucial source of foreign exchange for Nigeria, supplementing both foreign direct investment and portfolio investments. The CBN’s initiatives have supported continued growth in these inflows, aligning with the institution’s objective of doubling formal remittance receipts within a year.”

The CBN also noted that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported a slowdown in Nigeria’s year-on-year headline inflation rate for the first time in 19 months, signalling the effectiveness of the CBN’s monetary policy tightening measures.

The CBN further expressed its commitment to closely monitoring market conditions and adjusting its policies as needed to ensure the continued flow of remittances, thereby contributing to the stability of the foreign exchange market.

BREAKING: Record of Ex-CJN Onnoghen’s CCT Case File Declared Missing in AGF Office

by Folarin Kehinde August 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice (AGF) has declared that it cannot find the case file for the trial of former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Samuel Walter Nkanu Onnoghen, five years after the conclusion of the trial.

Onnoghen was prosecuted in 2019 by the federal government on charges of false declaration of assets at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, found guilty, and removed from office. He was also ordered to forfeit the undeclared assets to the federal government.

However, at the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Tuesday, the representative of the federal government, Tijani Gazali, informed the court that the AGF office does not have a single paper related to the trial and conviction of the ex-CJN.

Gazali explained that the trial was contracted to a private lawyer, Aliyu Umar, who has since passed away. He appealed to the court to grant an adjournment to enable the government to retrieve necessary documents from the late lawyer’s chambers.

Counsel to the former CJN, Chris Uche, pointed out that some documents were served on the AGF office and acknowledged. He appealed to the court to allow him to move an application for an accelerated hearing, which was granted.

The Court of Appeal has fixed September 19 for the hearing of the appeal.

Onnoghen is praying the court to set aside the judgment of the CCT that removed him from office and ordered the forfeiture of his five bank accounts.

BREAKING: Shut down Nigeria if Ajaero is detained, NLC directs all workers nationwide

by Folarin Kehinde August 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has directed its affiliates members and all workers in the country to immediately shutdown the economy if the Nigerian Police arrest the Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

Recall that the Police had last night invited the NLC President to its headquarters for questioning over the allegation of involvement in terrorism financing among others.

The development led to the convocation of emergency National Executive Council, NEC, meeting at the Labour House where the Congress resolved to write to the Police for extension of time to enable it consult with its lawyers.

Briefing the workers, who had assembled at the Labour House in solidarity with the Congress President and to follow him to the Police headquarters, the NLC Deputy President, Kabiru Ado Sani, said that the invitation to Ajaero was invitation to workers.

According to him, at the end of the meeting, we reached some certain resolutions. Part of the resolutions is that, as a committed labour center that we agreed or that we abide by the rule of law and due process.

“We will honor the invitation of the Nigerian police, because we are not faceless organization, but we believe that we need an extension of time, after consultation with our lawyers, because this invitation was extended to the Congress President yesterday and asked to report at the police by 10am today.

So we are already working with our lawyers to look for extension of time, but this does not legitimize the charges by the Nigerian police to the Congress leadership, and secondly, we resolve that in an event our Congress President was arrested or detained at any moment, we put our affiliate on red alert to mobilize our membership across the country, that all workers in this country should down tool their services.

“This is the resolution because Comrades, this organization belongs to all of us, therefore we should do everything possible to safeguard the safety of this organization. We therefore, thank you very much, and you shoulwait for further directives by our leadership.

“Whatever happens, we will communicate your leadership, and your leadership will communicate you. So we urge you to remain calm and go back peacefully to our working place and await further directives.

Tinubu’s govt spends N2.3 billion on foreign trips within six months – Report

by Folarin Kehinde August 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has spent a staggering N2.3 billion on foreign trips and related expenses within six months.

This revelation, sourced from the GovSpend analytics platform by BudgIT Foundation, highlights the extensive costs associated with presidential travel between February 21 and July 19, 2024.

During the period, the State House Headquarters in Abuja recorded payments for presidential trips, beginning with N300 million on February 21, 2024, for January’s expenses.

Additional payments followed, including N250 million on February 24 and a series of transactions on March 15, 2024, totalling hundreds of millions of naira.

The expenditures cover a wide range of activities related to foreign trips by the administration’s officials.

Moreover, the government spent over N2.9 billion between February 24 and March 15, 2024, on purchasing foreign exchange to fund trips by President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and First Lady Remi Tinubu.

The trips included visits to Dubai, Ethiopia, Switzerland, Liberia, France, and Côte d’Ivoire, with substantial sums used to acquire US dollars for these journeys.

For instance, N750 million was spent to purchase $1.27 million for President Tinubu’s trip to Dubai, while N1.04 billion was allocated to secure $692,265 for his visit to Ethiopia. The Vice President and First Lady also incurred costs for their trips, including N426.88 million for a visit to Switzerland and N149.79 million for the First Lady’s trip to France.

The expenditures have drawn sharp criticism, especially as they coincide with severe economic hardship in Nigeria.

President Tinubu recently urged Nigerians to endure the difficulties brought about by his economic policies, which have exacerbated inflation and contributed to widespread hunger.

BREAKING: President Tinubu sacks Nat’l Hajj Commission Chairman

by Folarin Kehinde August 19, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman as the new Executive Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), effectively removing the previous head, Jalal Arabi amid corruption allegations.

Professor Usman is a renowned scholar with qualifications from the University of Madinah and Peshawar University, Pakistan.

He previously served as Chairman of the Kano State Pilgrims Board, successfully overseeing the operations of the largest quota of state pilgrims in the country.

According to a statement by presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngalale, the appointment is subject to confirmation by the Senate.

“The President expects the new Chairman of NAHCON to discharge his duties with integrity, transparency, and utmost fidelity to the nation,” the statement said.

The development comes after the previous Chairman, Jalal Arabi, and the commission’s secretary, Abdullahi Kontagora, were grilled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged mismanagement or diversion of parts of the N90bn released by the Federal Government to subsidize the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

Arabi and Kontagora spent three nights in EFCC custody last week after failing to meet their bail conditions.

Tinubu ‘considering’ Frank Mba, three others as IGP as Egbetokun exits September

by Folarin Kehinde August 19, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

There are strong indications that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure may not be extended by President Bola Tinubu.

Egbetokun, who was appointed on June 19, last year, is expected to retire on September 4, when he turns 60.

Sources say President Tinubu is already considering four high ranking officers for the police to job.

Top on the list is Frank Mba, a Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) and former spokesperson of the force.

Others senior officers being considered, according to the source which craved anonymity include Dasuki Danbappa Galadanchi, Sahabo Abubakar Yahaya and Bala Ciroma.

“Frank Mba is top on the list of those being considered by the president as the next IGP because he is retiring in May 2027. He’s also an experienced and well-rounded officer,” the source said.

“Ciroma, Galadanchi and Yahaya are also being considered because although their time is short, it will give the president time to consider the police amendment bill at the National Assembly,” the source revealed.

Leading reporters reports that there has been a recent wave of criticisms against what many describe as “hasty passage” of the police amendment bill to increase the service age of officer.

“Even if the bill is eventually signed by the president, it will most certainly not apply to IGP Egbetokun because the president is aware that Nigerians are watching,” the source declared.
